Wireless printing stopped - Canon MX310

I see many people are having this issue. After searching the forums I haven't seen the solution.
We used to be able to print wirelessly with this same printer & network. One day it just stopped working and nothing I've been able to find has fixed the issue.
10.5.6 - Host machine - USB wired to MX310
10.5.8 - Macbook Pro wireless
We've installed the latest drivers on both machines (is it only really needed on the host machine???)
Host Machine:
Sharing - Printer Sharing ON - MX310 Printer is checked to SHARE
Print & FAX Prefs - MX310 Printer is checked to SHARE
Wireless Machine:
Added the MX310 printer again - took it a while to do it's scan and "getting info", but it shows up with the correct name & Host machine.
When we try to print on the wireless machine it just says "printing", but nothing else happens.
It also fails in the exact same way when the Macbook Pro is connected via ethernet cable, so it's not just the wireless aspect.
I do see that it's trying to connect on port 601. I'll see if there's a way to open that port up & if it changes anything.
Any ideas?

Hello DaveF,
First thing I would do is ensure you can print to the MX310 via USB with the MacBook Pro. This will help to determine if the driver software is installed correctly on the MBP. If that works fine then you can concentrate on the network connection.
Printer sharing uses port 631, which is used by Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). You could monitor this port on the machine hosting the share to see if the MBP actually connects to it. If you open Terminal and type 'netstat -a', this will show all currently active ports and connections. If the MBP does connect, then you will see its IP address and the port number in the list.
If you don't see the MBP in the list, check the built-in firewall settings are not enabled (located in System Prefs > Security > Firewall). Also try enabling File Sharing and check that you can connect to the Public folder.

  • Wireless printing to Canon MX310 fails using D-Link Router - Can't Connect

I recently bought a D-Link wireless router (320), which supports wireless printing and I am trying to set it up to work with MBP. I set it up to run with Windows XP and it works fine with no problems, but with my MBP it won't work. Here is a screen shot showing the XP set up and the printer server info from the router (bottom).
    http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/1645/printerq.jpg
From this, I've been using the following information to add the printer,
    Protocol: HP Jetdirect - Socket
    Address: 192.168.0.1
    Queue: lp1
The printer shows up as idle in the printer selection menu. When I print it goes through the following messages,
    Connecting to Printer...
    Printer Online...
    Printing...
And then the queue clears itself as if it printed, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. At first I assumed it was a problem with the router, but when I tested it with Windows it doesn't have any hang-ups.
Any help would be appreciated with this, as I've read several posts and tried all recommendations but nothing will work. I'm also curious if I have the "Queue" in the printer dialogue right, or if it should be 9100. Thanks in advance!

Based on your Windows port configuration, your Mac printer queue configuration is reasonably correct. Although based on your Windows port configuration, you don't seem to require a queue name of lp1 - this would normally be required for LPD connections.
Your issue will be with the driver used. The Canon Mac drivers cannot be used when you have the printer connected to the USB port of a wireless router or print server (although the exception to this rule is an Airport device). When you have the printer connected via USB to a router or being shared by Windows, then you need to use a CUPS-based driver like Gutenprint or PrintFab (yes I know the Canon driver says CUPS but it is not true CUPS).
The Gutenprint tends to be the preferred driver because it is free, however your MX310 is not listed as a supported model so you would have to experiment with using a model that is supported and this can waste a lot of time and ink/paper.
PrintFab (www.printfab.net) costs 49 Euro but it does support your MX310. A trial version is also available so you could see if the printer does work before making a purchase.
One final note. For your Windows queue you don't need to add the colon 9100 after the IP address. The fact that you have selected RAW and have 9100 set for the Port Number is adequate.

  • Wireless Scanning on Canon MX310 via Time Capsule

I can print wirelessly from my new MacBook Pro to the Canon MX310 but cannot scan wirelessly. canon could not help apart from suggesting I install MP Navigator v 3.0. It cannot be opened as the message I get when attempting to do so is "scanner driver supported by this software is not installed" and the original version of MP Navigator does nothing when attempting to scan wirelessly. I can scan using the USB connection but this is a nuisance now I have Time Capsule. My scanner drivers are up-to-date according to the versions on the Canon website. Canon Support suggested that the new MP Navigator software would enable an option to configure using the Time Capsule IP address but as I could not open the programme this obviously got nowhere.

    Hi LloydP,
Your answer is very interesting and might solve one of my wishes.
If I buy a all-in-one printer that supports WiFi scanning and printing from OS X 10.5 MacBooks, could I send print and scan jobs directly from and to the printer while surfing the Web via my TimeCapsule at the same time?
So rather than connecting the all-in-one Ethernet/WiFi printer to my TimeCapsule and try to print- and scan- over the air (which doesn't work from the blogs I read), I could connect wireless to TimeCapsule to surf the Web and sent print and scan jobs wireless direcly to a Brother 490CW at the same time for example?
Did I interpret this correctly? Thanks for your reply.

  • HP 6500 Wireless Printer Stopped Printing Black Ink When Connected to PC

My printer stopped printing with black ink.  All the other colors seem to work fine.  I hooked up my Mac to test and see if that worked and it did!  I've concluded that it's something to do with the driver since it worked on my Mac, so I re-installed the driver and it still does not print black ink while trying to print from our Dell PC.  Any Ideas?

    Hello Libertyb,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Officejet 6500 stop printing black ink on your Windows computer. What is your operating system on your computer? Windows.
How is this printer connected? Wireless or USB?

  • Re: Wireless printing stops working with Home Hub ...

I have had to fix a few clients home networks and was perturbed to find there is a pattern between the new home hubs and existing wireless printers.
I too found no logical reason why the connection would drop or go twilight zone. I searched after fixing a couple of these sites and found no conclusive methods from the more senior site members posting suggestions.
I agree that it is a bug with the HH firmware or a setting that you should be able to tweak is not available to band-aid over the underlying issue.
My working method was to manually set the channel in the router from the auto setting. Pinging and communications seem to flow both ways and the printers work straight away once the settings have been applied.
I would love to see a proper response from a BT representative as with some areas of the U.K there is only BT as an option (for broadband) and by ultimately having a HH router that behaves in this fashion is just poor. I think BT need to recognise the issue and investigate from some customers home networks to understand the issue.
Any update that sheds some light on this is welcome!

I have a HH1 with a mixture of hard wired and wireless connections. The hard wired ones all have static IP addresses, however I do not use the DHCP server on the home hub, as that is a function of one of my wireless access points.
My printer is connected by USB to my server, but I never have any issues communication between wireless devices, and  Ethernet connected ones.
Did you delete the printer from the home hub DHCP table, before giving it a static IP address, to avoid any conflict?
Maybe its an issue with the HH5? You will have to see if anyone else is having problems.

  • Wireless Printing Stopped?!

I have my HP Photosmart 1218xi connected to a 2.0 USB hub and the hub is directly connected to my Dell Dimension 8200 (WinXP Home) my airport express basestation is also directly connected to that computer. When I got my MBPro 17in C2D i setup the printer through the printer utility and enabled print sharing on my MBP and WinXP computer. Everything was perfect, until today. All of a sudden it won't print. I get this weird error message saying that connection failed. I uninstalled the printer and tried to reinstall to noavail. I then tried to direct connect the printer to the MBP and that doesn't even work. Can anyone help?! I'm lost!

When you had the original problem did you power off the printer, power off the router.  Power on the router and wait 3 mins and then power on the printer?

  • Can't find wireless printer with E2000 router

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 (running Vista Home Premium) that connects to my Linksys E2000 and to a wireless printer, the Canon MX870.  It's been working for months without problems.
I just got a Toshiba Satellite P770-BT4G22 Laptop (running Window 7 Professional 64 bit) and installed the Cisco Connect software following the instructions where you have already set up the router and just need to install the software to do things like add a device.  I can connect to the router fine using a web browser or the Cisco Connect Software and my Toshiba connects to the Internet through the router without problems.
The problem is Cisco Connect says it can't find a wireless printer when I run it on my new Toshiba.  I've put the printer within 3 feet of the router with my Toshiba in between but still it can't find it.  My Dell in another room connects to the printer no problem.  And I can print to the Canon if I  select the Shared Canon Printer ( on the Dell) using the Toshiba's Control Panel Add Printer function.  But obviously that means the Dell has to be on so that's not good for much more than troubleshooting.  I've also wired a connection from the printer to the Toshiba and downloaded the latest driver, printed that way so I know that's not the problem.  The problem is that Cisco Connect can't find the printer.  It says there are 6 devices attached to my router so it's seeing something, but I guess not the printer.  I've turned any firewalls off for this testing too.
I'm stumped as to why it can't find the printer when the Dell did and they are all on the same network. Unless it's not compatible with 64 bit Windows.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have already added the printer to my network using Windows Add Printer prior to assigning the printer a static IP.  But I followed your instructions in making the IP static so if I reset the router I don't have to go through the process again.
When I ran CC and told it to add a printer, it did not identify any printer for me, it went from the screen where you say to add a printer to one where it asked me to name the printer.  Honestly, I wasn't even sure if it was referring to the Canon because I'd already added it using Windows, albeit without a static IP, just by knowing what IP it had been assigned.  After I gave it the name, it went back to the "home" screen with computers & devices, parental controls, etc.  No errors, but no real way to see or change what I had done.
That's why I was asking if there's a way to look at the router and view devices that have a static IP.  I can view the DHCP table but it's not there of course.  I don't really see anywhere using the router software (either by web connection or CC) where the Canon printer is listed.  I see it in Windows Printers, but I saw it there before I reran  CC and it asked me to name it.
I appreciate your help and I'm glad to be up and running with it.  Especially with having a static IP.  I'm just trying to better understand what happened and how to view my devices connected to the router.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Suddenly cannot print to Canon wireless printer

I'm on an iMac with Yosemite 10.10.3 and also have two Macbooks on the same network. We have been using a Canon MG6620 wireless printer for several months without a hitch. Suddenly, between documents, the printer and computers stopped talking to each other. The printer still thinks it's on the network when I check its configuration. AirPort Utility still shows it being connected to the network via my AirPort Extreme. It still shows as the default printer in System Preferences. Yet, when I try to print I get an error that says "the printer is not connected to the network." I have restarted/rebooted the computers and the printer. I have reset the printer preferences. I have unplugged the printer. I have tried printing from the Macbooks. Nothing is working, and this happened literally between me printing two different documents!!! I'm at a loss for an explanation. Any guidance would be appreciated. Oh, and this all started BEFORE I updated to 10.10.3, so don't blame the update :-)

Now everything is working, at least for the moment! I can now see my printer at its IP address but it asks for a password.
Don't worry about that. The main thing is that you can now connect to the internal web page of the printer, which in turn means you can now print to the Canon.

  • Canon MX340 wireless printer no longer connecting over wireless and coming up with "a communications error has occured"

I have a Canon MX340 wireless printer and have only recently started having trouble printing over the wireless connection. No settings have changed on my MacBook Pro, the printer, the router or the wifi connection and it is strange how it has just stopped working. I have tried things like restarting the laptop and removing the printer from the laptop and re-adding it. It sometimes seems to work for maybe one print but then it goes back to saying "a communications error has occured", when I try to print again.
Any help would be great. Thanks

I had the same MX340 problem.  My printer was working fine over WiFi connection to my Airport Extreme for years and then suddenly, about a month ago, it stopped printing after the first print job.  I can print once and then I have to power-cycle the printer to get it to print another time and then I have to repeat the power-cycle.
The printer seems to be "forgotten" by the network or lose its connection after the first print job.
On my MacBookPro 10.6.8 I get the error code 300...yadayadayad... On my iMac 10.5.8 it just says :communications error".
HERE IS THE FIX - I got it off this link - http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=24681
You have to connect to the MX340 using the printer cable that came with the printer (or any USB printer cable) and set up a hardwired USB printer queue.  Then print a couple of print jobs - I use TextEdit and type in "1234".  Then try the same thing but select your WiFi print queue - I just type another line on the same sheet of paper with TextEdit.
The WiFi connection should work again.  I did this a few more times and then disconnected the USB cable and now it continues to work without the USB print queue being used.  I can also print to the WiFi queue with my iMac.
If you still have problems I suggest you set up the printer again on the WiFi router using the "print cable connection" method.  Here's a link to a webpage someone kindly provided instructions for the process:

  • My Canon MX310 Series Printer failed as the software "is currently not available from the Software Update Server"? What is the matter with Apple OSX Mountain Lion?

Mountain Lion stopped working with our Canon MX310 Printer? Why is the software not available from the Software Update Server?

The printer and ICA scanner driver is available from Apple. There is probably some other reason why you cannot get the drivers.
You can also get the drivers from Canon.
But reading your post it sounds like you were printing to the MX310 and recently it has stopped printing. Is this the case?

  • EA6500 stopped being recognized by wireless printer

Last week, my EA6500 stopped being recognized by my wireless Canon printer.  The laptops and ipad can still see the router.  How do I fix this?  I have tried router power off, and, complete reconfigure as if new.  Has not fixed the wireless printer issue.  THe printer can see other networks
Also, one suggestion was to do a 'reconnection' to the printer by first pressing a wps button.  Does the EA6500 have this button?

    Hi jjohnsen8!
In my case, what I did was disable the Simple Tap feature on the router. It's also running on 2.4 GHz so it may have interferred to the network. On the Linksys Smart WiFi, click on Wireless >> Simple Tap >> the select OFF.
