Wireless Printing using Time Capsule

I tried to print wirelessly but I keep getting the message: There is a problem communicating with the printer. What am I not doing?

I have had similar difficulties trying to get my HP 460wbt to connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule. It works fine if you take off any wi-fi security (a useful thing to check compatability but probably not wise to leve the network open!).
I previously used an Airport base station and though I had some initial difficulties I did manage to use WEP security on that and it worked faultlessly with any computer attached to my network including Windows XP via Parallels. HOWEVER, I couldn't get WEP to work with the Time Capsule and printer (it worked with the computers) and WPA/WPA2 is I suspect not compatible with WPA_psk (or at least I can't figure this one out!).
The conclusion then is that the wireless card/software security for the printer isn't going to work with the Time Capsule - a pity and rather odd since there is a work round with the Airport base which is at least 5 years old! Why do Apple not make such issues backwards compatible I wonder?
I have solved the problem temporarily by having BOTH the Time capsule and Airport base connected wirelessly - which means a one click change of wireless network to print - but hey-ho it works until I find another solution. Any ideas?

  • Use airport express wireless printing with time capsule

I want to add airport express to my time capsule network to take advantage of wireless printing. I have set my AE to join my existing wireless network and connected my printer to the USB port. I logged into AE through Airport Utility and clicked on the printer pane. It shows my usb printer is connected to the AE. Then I went to system preferences to set my print and fax settings to share over network.
I thought this is correct, but when I click print it tells me the printer is offline. Am I missing a step? I would connect the printer to my time capsule but I need my printer in a different part of the house. Thanks for you help!!

You have your printer installed at two different locations. To confirm, open System Preferences and then click Print & Fax.
You should see your printer listed twice in the printer list on the left.
One is your printing installed at your computer and the other is your printer installed at the AirPort Express.
When you open a document to print, you have to choose the printer that you want to use. You may still be choosing the printer at your computer. Look for the printer at the Express. If you intend to use the printer at the Express most of the time, you might want to make that your default printer so you don't have to select a device each time you print.
For more info on printing issues, see the Apple Printer Troubleshooting Guide.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible, even though they may appear connected to your device. If you work your way through the guide and still cannot print, then that's likely the explanation.

  • Can't connect macbook to wireless printer via time capsule

I recently installed time capsule as my lan router. i use a 10.6.8 macbook; i use a brother mfc-6490 printer wireless. the printer was working fine on my previous setup, which used just a normal wireless router. the printer sees the wireless network but i can't print to it from my macbook. i've reinstalled the drivers. any suggestions?

Did you delete the existing printer in System Preferences > Print & Fax, and add it again?
I realize you reinstalled the printer's drivers, but deleting and subsequently adding the printer is certain to be a requirement as a consequence of changing your router. As far as your MacBook is concerned, the printer no longer exists where it had been accustomed to finding it, so you simply have to tell it where it "lives" now.

  • Remote Printing using Time Capsule...? Is it possible?

    Hi Guys,
I have successfully set up remote access to my Time Capsule using Finder and 'Connect To Server' option to connect to afp://<MyStaticIPAddress>
This works as a great alternative to shelling out money on a .mac subscription...
Just wondering, since i have a printer connected to the TC via USB, is there any way for me to send documents to that printer when I am away from my local network?
    Any help much appreciated,
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey PuzzleBobble,
Thanks for the help, unfortunately I'm away from my local network and can't get access to Time capsule through airport utility remotely, but will have a play about with some settings tonight when I get home...
I tried the IPP stuff but also getting the message that printer is 'Busy' all the time...
If i manage to figure it out I will be sure to post back here to let you know what I did.
If you get any more info in the mean time that would be great!
Does the printer itself have to have any special features such as print server, or can this all be handled by TC do you think? The printer is just a basic HP PSC1400 All-in-One, but i figured that since i can print wirelessly on home network with it connected to TC, there must be a way to get it to work remotely too...
    Regards,
    Hugh.

  • Setting up wireless printer with Time Capsule

I've just replaced my original Time Capsule after it had a terminal power failure.
The replacement Time Capsule is working okay as a backup and I have set up my wireless network again, but now I can't print using my Canon MX860 printer, which had been working well with my original Time Capsule and wireless network.
Any advice how I can fix this issue would be much appreciated - thanks.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Your post did not tell us what you may have already tried, whether you are trying to connect the printer using wireless only, or whether it will be connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
If you are trying to connect using wireless, you'll need to "re-install" the printer again using Canon's setup utility just like you did the first time.
Likewise, if you are using USB to connect, you'll need to open System Preferences on your Mac and click Print & Fax to install the printer.

  • Wireless Printing and Time Capsule

I have just switched over my wireless network from a linksys router to the time capsule. I can surf the internet and I've connected my hard drives to the USB ports and they are working, however, my Brother MFC 7820N printer is not working. I have it connected to the ethernet port, however, when I try to set it up on the printer preference panel, it does not show up. I have the latest drivers installed from brother and I am able to hook up my computer to the Time Capsule via the ethernet port.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers

I am unfamiliar with the brand and model of your printer, but the only suggestion I can think of is making sure the printer is obtaining an IP address that is compatible with your Time Capsule. If your printer is set up to obtain an IP address manually, it may be getting one that is in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range that is the default for most routers. The Apple Base Stations however have a default of 10.0.1.xxx range.
Go into your printer's setup and check to see the IP address. Then either set it up to obtain an IP automatically, or assign one in the 10.0.1.xxx range (the latter might be better as it will ensure the IP address does not change). Also, be sure to set it as an address that is not in use by any other device.
Another suggestion would be to use DHCP reservations. Find the MAC address of your printer, start AirPort Utility, enter Manual Setup, and under Internet > DHCP, add the MAC address of the printer along with the IP address you want to reserve specifically for it. This makes sure that if the printer is off and another device connects, the IP address will still be reserved for the printer (no IP conflicts).

  • CONNECTING MY WIRELESS PRINTER WITH TIME CAPSULE

Cant seem to get it to link up, any suggestions.?

I have the same printer but have always used it on a wired network - I have a couple of problems that recur with it - sometimes I have to turn it off, unplug it and reinitialize it for no obvious reason - have you tried that?
And if I'm gone for a while sometimes it gets a new IP address and I have to find it again for my computers
Have you gotten the manual out and seen if there is any help there?
Maybe as a test you should move it near the Time Capsule and hook it up via wired ethernet and see how things go that way
I have not been able to scan with it since upgrading to Leopard - have not spend much time on that - it may be something really simple (or maybe not)

  • Cannot print to Windows printer using Time Capsule

    Hi all,
I recently bought Time Capsule and am having some printing problems. Here's the situation:
I have a printer connected to a Windows PC and want to print to it using my Mac. Now, before I bought Time Capsule and used a cheap router this worked fine. However, now when I try to print from my Mac to the Windows PC I get the following error messages:
    "Connection failed: NTSTATUS_BAD_NETWORKNAME"
"Unable to connect to CIFS host, will retry in 60 seconds..."
I reckon that the Windows PC is blocking all requests from my Time Capsule. To test I've tried turning off the firewall on Windows and it's anti-virus software (Kaspersky) and still no luck.
And moving the printer to my Time Capsule is not really a solution either.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I did some searching -- more info: This is apparently due to an upgrade to CUPS, which is the Common Unix Printing System (available to administer directly at: http://localhost:631/ ) This is the way to add a printer if you feel especially geeky.
    There is another discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6914585&#6914585
about this, but apparently it is not a resolution, just a description of the problem.
So, I really don't want to deinstall the 2008-002 update, if I can help it. I already installed version 1.1, which did not resolve the issue. I would like to be able to print to my Windows-Active Directory printers without resorting to IP printing. It sounds like this is something Apple has to fix, from the discussions I read. Is this true? And if so, any ideas about how long Apple will take to fix it?

  • I have a m2007 macbook connected to my wireless network using time capsule.  I stream video to the macbook, but often get start stop of the streaming, but no wheel to indicate a buffering issue.  Can I resolve this with higher speed internet and cable mod

I'm wondering if my cable internet is too slow for wireless streaming of videos to other macbooks.  Any help will be appreciated

Can you clarify whether you are asking about video that you are streaming from the Internet to your Mac through the Time Capsule?
Or, are you asking about streaming video that is already stored on the Time Capsule to your Mac?
In either case, what happens....video quality wise..... if you test by temporarily turning off the wirelss on the Mac and then connecting it to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule using a spare Ethernet cable for a few hours?

  • Extending an existing wireless network using Time Capsule

I connected my Time Capsule via Ethernet cable to my network. I used the airport utility to extend my existing wireless network (Cisco router)k. After that my wireless devices were disconnected and I got a message stating "Unable to join wireless network". The macbook that I used to set up the Time Capsule showed a message along the lines that a device on the network was trying to use the macbook's IP address, I changed the macbooks IP address and then was able to connect my ipad and iphone to the wireless network but the connection was unusable as it was so slow. has anyone done this successfully and if so do you have nay advice

If you connect the TC to the network by ethernet you do not extend an existing networking.. indeed you cannot.. only works with apple routers and no ethernet.
You create a wireless network.. you can use roaming .. ie use the same wireless name and security settings as the existing Cisco router but you must set different channels.
If you need instructions in that setup what version airport utility are you using. I would strongly recommend a version 5.. it is so superior cf toyland v6.

  • Extending wireless network using Time Capsule

    Hi guys,
I have been trying to sort this issue out for some time.
Basically I have a Thompson Wireless Router which connects to my ISP, this is downstairs broadcasting a wireless network to my house.
I want to put the Time Capsule upstairs, to extend the WLAN and also connect my Xbox over Ethernet.
No matter what I try I cannot get it to work, it ends up setting up 2 WLANs where the Thomson WLAN works (as there is an ISP connection) and the TC wont (as its not connected)
What I want is for the Thomson WLAN to be extended via the TC to allow my Xbox on to Live...
I also have a Mac Mini upstairs that would connect either via the TC WLAN or through ethernet.
Any help you can offer would be amazing
    Thanks
    Adam

If you are trying to "extend" the wireless signal from the Thompson router through the Time Capsule using wireless only, this is probably not going to work.
The reason for this is that Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature appears to be a proprietary technology that works only among other Apple devices. For that reason, it is highly unlikely that the Thompson router and Time Capsule would be compatible for the purpose that you desire.
If you are able to connect the Time Capsule to the Thompson router using an Ethernet connection, you could configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Thompson network. In addition, the Time Capsule must be configured as a "bridge" in Bridge Mode for this to work correctly.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable,  you might want to look at a pair of Etherent powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.

  • WIreless Printing with Time Capsule.

    Peripheral info:
    MacBookPro 17" early 09; 10.5.8
    Printer: Canon Pixma MP480
Time Capsule Dual-Band 7.4.2 firmware, uptodate AirPort Utility
For some reason when adding the printer using my 17" uMBP it sees the printer but no drivers specifically attached to the printer...i tried searching the built in drivers for the printer but no luck.
I dont ever plan on using the copying or scanning functionality of this printer on this comptuer and i dont really feel the need to isntall the included software, so im wondering if the drivers for printing via Wifi/Time Capsule are included or do i have to actually install the drives for this printer for it to work over the network?
With a printer sepcifically provided by apple that illustrates and advertises just a plug and play wihtout install excess drivers...
    thanks!

    Hi Frank,
It looks like you can get the driver from Canon's website without all of the bloatware that usually comes with the "suite."
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=2610&m odelid=17160#DownloadDetailAct
Bonjour will typically see the printer when it's connected via the TC but you'll see need the drivers to be present on the machine before you're able to print to the device. I recommend setting up the printer to where it works via USB when wired to the machine and then move it over to the TC.

  • Wireless printing via time capsule

i have my Kodak printer connected to the Time Capsule but can not figure out how to print.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Try Apple's guide for printing to see if that will help gets things going.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1253
Bear in mind that not all printers are compatible and there's really no reliable way to know whether your device will work unless you try it.

  • HT201250 wireless backup using time capsule

my first back is taking much more time than expected. Notes do say that the first back up wull take some time, which is expected. BUT over the last 48 hours it has only backed up 3.4 GB out of a measured 80 GB. The math says someting is very wrong with the duration. Or is it? Can anyone give some clues. Simply, all I have done is set the backup disk and started the backup and the left the device alone. The wireless connection is strong (signal) but the external HDD sounds like it is constantly in "pain". Always been like it.

It's much better (2-3 times faster and more reliable) to do the initlal backup via Ethernet.
If it's only done 3.4 GB in 2 days, something is terribly wrong.  You might want to cancel the backup, connect via Ethernet, and start over.
