Wireless printing without a router

My daughter is 100 miles away and only has ethernet cable access to the internet. she is having trouble printing on her wireless printer sold to us by apple to go with her macbook air. She knows she needs to set up an ad hoc connection but the macbook cannot detect the printer.  Is the ethernet cable overriding her wireless functionality?

Do you have the ad-hoc network hosted by one of the computers?  It sounds like you are trying to add the printer to an ad-hoc network.
Newer printers (not certain when this changed) do not support the printer connecting to a hosted ad-hoc network on a computer.  Sorry.
However, the computers should be able to connect to the printer's ad-hoc network for printing purposes.  On the computers, there should be a network SSID that has HP in the name (possibly print, printer model, or setup).  If you connect to this network, the printer should be able to be added to the computers.  However, the computers may not communicate with each other as the printer isn't really intended to connect multiple devices to each other.
You mentioned page 9 and 10 of the manual.  I reviewed page 9 and 10 of the manual and it did not mention anything about any network settings.  This came much later in the manual I had found for the M1217nfw.  Is the manual I linked the same manual you have?

  • How do you set up for AirPrint an HP110A wireless printer without a PC on a wifi network using a Verizon FIOS router)

Purchasing an HP110A wireless printer for my 85 year old father who has and Ipad
This pritner is fully compatible with Airplay per HP site
    My dad has no PC
    He knows the router passcode.
    What is the process?
Will the HP printer to be purchased shortly work out of the box w/no drivers
How do you set the printer up to work on the iPad?

    Richard-
I have the HP D110 AirPrint printer.  As I recall, it was configured in Ad Hoc network mode when first received.  It was necessary to set it up to access my WiFi router before I could use it with the internet connection.  Then, as part of the setup process, it downloaded the latest firmware update from HP.  This was all done from the printer control panel, and no PC was needed.
As Pvonk mentioned, your router must be able to correctly handle Bonjour data for iPad to print to an AirPrint printer.  Go ahead and try it, it may work.  If the iPad can't find the printer, you will need to contact Verizon for help in configuring the router or getting a different router that is compatible.
By now, you should realize that a PC is needed to update the iPad.  I assume your Dad visits you when he needs use of a PC.

  • Can't find wireless printer with E2000 router

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 (running Vista Home Premium) that connects to my Linksys E2000 and to a wireless printer, the Canon MX870.  It's been working for months without problems.
I just got a Toshiba Satellite P770-BT4G22 Laptop (running Window 7 Professional 64 bit) and installed the Cisco Connect software following the instructions where you have already set up the router and just need to install the software to do things like add a device.  I can connect to the router fine using a web browser or the Cisco Connect Software and my Toshiba connects to the Internet through the router without problems.
The problem is Cisco Connect says it can't find a wireless printer when I run it on my new Toshiba.  I've put the printer within 3 feet of the router with my Toshiba in between but still it can't find it.  My Dell in another room connects to the printer no problem.  And I can print to the Canon if I  select the Shared Canon Printer ( on the Dell) using the Toshiba's Control Panel Add Printer function.  But obviously that means the Dell has to be on so that's not good for much more than troubleshooting.  I've also wired a connection from the printer to the Toshiba and downloaded the latest driver, printed that way so I know that's not the problem.  The problem is that Cisco Connect can't find the printer.  It says there are 6 devices attached to my router so it's seeing something, but I guess not the printer.  I've turned any firewalls off for this testing too.
I'm stumped as to why it can't find the printer when the Dell did and they are all on the same network. Unless it's not compatible with 64 bit Windows.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I have already added the printer to my network using Windows Add Printer prior to assigning the printer a static IP.  But I followed your instructions in making the IP static so if I reset the router I don't have to go through the process again.
When I ran CC and told it to add a printer, it did not identify any printer for me, it went from the screen where you say to add a printer to one where it asked me to name the printer.  Honestly, I wasn't even sure if it was referring to the Canon because I'd already added it using Windows, albeit without a static IP, just by knowing what IP it had been assigned.  After I gave it the name, it went back to the "home" screen with computers & devices, parental controls, etc.  No errors, but no real way to see or change what I had done.
That's why I was asking if there's a way to look at the router and view devices that have a static IP.  I can view the DHCP table but it's not there of course.  I don't really see anywhere using the router software (either by web connection or CC) where the Canon printer is listed.  I see it in Windows Printers, but I saw it there before I reran  CC and it asked me to name it.
I appreciate your help and I'm glad to be up and running with it.  Especially with having a static IP.  I'm just trying to better understand what happened and how to view my devices connected to the router.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Wireless printing without printer driver

I have a HP CLJ2600n which I use for wireless printing at home via a router. My wife has a laptop from the office running on Windows which does not allow her to install any software, not even printer drivers. I can get it to connect with the home internet via the router but can I get it to connect such that I can print without needing to install the printer driver? Is cloud printing an option?

To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the LaserJet 2600n is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums - Printing and Digital Imaging.
In the meantime, the support page for your product may help:

  • Is there any way to print directly to a wireless printer without a wireless network?

My daughter is in the dorms at a university that doesn't allow individual wireless networks and I am trying to figure out if I can print directly from her MacBook Pro to the HP Photosmart Premier C310A.  Can anyone help?

I am currently using a USB connection, but that keeps me tethered to the printer.  Which is something I would like to avoid.  I was looking at creating an ad hoc network with the MacBook, but I don't know Apple products well enough.
Is there a way to wirelessly print to the printer without an internet connection?  Will an ad hoc network work? Can an ad hoc network even be done with a MacBook?

  • Can Officejet 6100 wireless print without network?

We just purchased a Officejet 6100 to use in a vehicle for commercial vehicle enforcement. We would like to use it to print wirelessly directly from a laptop without a network or cable. Is this possible with this printer? If not do you have a suggestion before I rip it out of the box? Our hopes it that it would connect with the laptop wirelessly and give the ability to print.

It appears from the manual that this is not a wireless printer.

my mom recently bought me the HP DESKJET 1510 All-in-One series so i have an at home printer for school work. but when we bought it we did not know there was a certain USB that had to connect to the printer. so we bought the wrong one. now i have a project due and i cannot print. we have a small USB that fits it but its hard to connect it to the computer and printer because its so small. so if we can have it sent to the printer without the USB that would be perfect!

    Hi,
No, in many cases printers won't come with USB cables. You need a cable which is similar to the following one:

  • Unable to operate wireless printer with new router

The HP Officejet Pro 8000 has been working successfully for the past year via wireless on a home network with 3 computers using an ATT Uverse internet router.  The router was changed to a different new ATT wireless router with a different network name and WiFi password and the printer does not work wirelessly. The printer does work dedicated to one computer with a USB cable.
Should I download and reinstall a new driver?

  • Wireless printing without sharing

I have my Powerbook connected wirelessly to our home network. A HP Officejet 6210 rests on the networked (wired). I am trying to print to it wirelessly without having to wake up one of the computers on the network (to share the printer). Any ideas?

I don't have that printer, so I'm guessing you mean it has ethernet built-in? The ones with built-in networking are the only ones HP has provided network-capable drivers for.
Since you are using Tiger, you get to the HP proprietary driver protocols by clicking More Printers. The protocol will be something like "HP IP" or "HP Appletalk."

  • Wireless printing without network?

Is it possible to print wirelessly without a wireless network? Is it possible to connect a printer to an AirPort Express? There is no broadband network in place.
We have 5 people(XP users) that need to use a USB printer. It may be a long shot, but I thought it may be possible.
If anyone has any thoughts about this idea or another solution I could use, I'd love to hear about it.

Is it possible to print wirelessly without a wireless
network? Is it possible to connect a printer to an

    place.
In this case, no, however you can use the Airport Express to create a wireless network which clients can join and then print.
There is no need for the Airport Express to be connected to any broadband or other internet connection.

  • Can't find wireless printer after changing router

I have recently changed my router to a Virgin media superhub. This has obviously changed my network details. I had 2 wireless printers running on my old network. ?I have managed to get one working as it has a menu screen on it and it was just a matter of searching for the new network. My second printer, a HP 1102w does not have a menu just buttons. I cannot get my Mac to see it in any of the preference options

maybe the features of the usb port is controlled by the routers setup page most routers have some ip address you type into a browser and login to the router to set them up try that
because some routers have usb for external hd some for printers some only for firmware updates (like the Apple TV (which of cause are not routers but have usb connector for the sole purpose of upgrading a crashed firmware))
