Wireless Router Encryption

Hi!
I recently switched to a Wireless-G Cable Gateway from Linksys (Model WCG 200), and can't seem to configure an encryption so that the houses near me aren't using my cable access. Does anyone know how to set that up with OS 10.3.9? (I have an older G4 if that's important).
Thanks for any help!

Click on Safari and when it opens type 192.168.1.1 in the Browser window and hit the return this should open up the Link-sys Utility for the Router.
I suggest you get out the phamplet for your Router and it will give you a step by step for all of the settings for your Router including the Username and Password instructions.
Cheers Don

  • Any resolution to 10.4.10, wireless router/encryption issues?

Like many others, I upgraded to 10.4.10 and soon began experiencing connecting to the Internet problems on my ATT/2WIRE gateway/router using WEP encryption as well as kernel panics.
Having had my MBP for only two months, I did not have many files so I did a Erase/Install using the disks (v. 10.4.8) that came with the laptop. Immediately after this procedure, I updated to 10.4.9, did permission repairs. The gateway/router issue and the kernel panics with 10.4.10 were gone. Without having installed anything else, I did the combo update to 10.4.10 again (did permission repair before and after) and after the double reboot, I was able to reach the Internet. I then went on to battery and sure enough the Internet connection was lost after about 10 minutes. Then came the kernel panic. I resorted to doing another Erase/Install and updating only to 10.4.9 and since then, no problems at all, even on battery.
I've read through the discussions on this but did not see if there was a resolution. Would 10.4.10 v1.1 resolve this issue? Or is this something that 2WIRE would need to update their firmware?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Most likely 2Wire needs to upgrade their firmware. There is still a chance one of these other solutions on my FAQ* might work too:

  • WEP encryption failure on D-Link 614+ wireless router after 1.1.1 update

My iPhone was connecting to the Internet via WiFi with a D-Link 614+ wireless router, and with 128-bit WEP encryption on, before I updated the iPhone to 1.1.1. Since that update, connectivity through the D-Link router requires that WEP be disabled. All other features seem to be compatible, including a static IP address and a static DNS address. No amount of network resetting and WiFi network forgetting helps. Apple Technical Support said that 128-bit WEP has been found mostly compatible, but it tends to be incompatible when the router's firmware has not been recently updated. This router's latest firmware is from 2005 (though the manufacturer dates it 2006), and the manufacturer has issued an end-of-life notice on it. My conclusion is that the router is obsolete if an iPhone is to be used with it. I have ordered an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, so if anything goes wrong there's no doubt about which company is responsible. Meanwhile, I have turned off router encryption and turned on MAC filtering so only our own devices can use the router. Has anybody found that WEP encryption on this router actually works on the iPhone post-1.1.1?

Shortly after posting, it occurred to me to search for "614". I found some other people's solutions for this router that involved disabling 4x mode and enabling the long preamble in the D-LINK UI (Advanced > Performance):

Doing this caused my packet loss issue to go away, but now my connection is extremely sluggish and browsing is even slower than before.
I'll keep tweaking settings to see if I can improve things.

  • Encryption of my wireless router

    Hi
Im setting up my Belkin wireless router to my Imac. Any overall tips and does anyone know the step by step to encryption?
    thanks!

I'd check the Belkin "Support" pages for their instructions, just as you'd check Apple's "Support" for its instructions.

  • Need help setting up my d-link wireless router to my imac

I need some help trying to set up my D-Link WBR 2310 wireless router to my iMac. I currently have Bell Sympatico high speed.
The reason I want to set up the wireless router is because my girlfriend works from home sometimes with her office computer downstairs and needs a wireless connection (she has a PC). I tried to call D-Link, but they're useless.
Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. It would be great to know what settings to change and as much step by step info as possible. I realize it's probably pretty simple to set up, but I'm fairly new to Macs and also to wireless.
    Thanks again

    Hello,
Connect the D-Link to the iMac by Ethernet.
    Open Safari (or Firefox)
    Navigate to http://192.168.1.1
Enter your password (default user is Admin and password "admin" - change it!)
Find the Wireless Security section and change the SSID to your own name i.e. "home network" .
Set the Encryption setting to "WPA" and enter a password of your choice. This is the encryption key and is different to the router's admin password.
Configure the WAN part of the router (which will vary depending on your ISP).
Configure the DHCP to serve clients (should be a simple on/off).
    Disconnect the iMac
Go to the iMac and turn on Airport on (on the menu bar).
When the iMac finds your SSID select it and enter the encryption password.
Check to allow Keychain to store that detail.
    Hope that helps

  • Need help hooking up my daughters computer on my wireless router.

I am totally new to the wireless world.  I just bought a lynksys Wireless-G WRT54G wireless router.  I hooked my new Dell XPS400 via the wired connection and my son's Dell inspiron notebook up via wireless.  My daughter just got back from Hong Kong with a Toshiba computer and it sees my wireless network but it is asking for different information than my son's computer did.  All I had to do with his was give the Key code and reboot the computer and he was able to get right on.  Her computer is asking for the "Network Name (SSID)", "Network Authentication" and "Data Encryption", none of which am I sure what it wants.  The only block calling for a key # is grayed out.
Is there anyone who might can give me some guidance on this?
    Thanks

Family sharing is only iOS 8 (and later)
    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old

    Hi,
I just bought a linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. My laptop was able to detect it wirelessly untill I changing the "Router Name" in the setup page(http://192.168.1.1)
While saving the settings, the wireless network suddently disconnected. From that point onwards, I was not able to detect the wireless network with any computer at all.
I tried unplugging it, resetting it, and even restory factory settings by holding the reset button for aprox 30 secs.
    What is wrong?
    Thanks in Advanced

Recheck the wireless setting (SSID, encryption, DHCP, etc) on router management page again. Also make sure your computer's wireless adapter setting matches the one you set on router.

  • I keep losing my wireless connection after periods of inactivity - any solution? I recently installed a new wireless router with improved range.

I recently installed a Netgear Wireless router for improved reception, but now my macbook loses connection through Airport after periods of inactivity.  We have another older Macbook in the house, and it never loses connection.  I never had this problem with the previous Linksys router, just limited range.  Any ideas what is causing this?  It's frustrating to have to frequently shout down and re-boot.  That so far is the only way I can re-connect.

Adjust the Wireless Settings on your linksys router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non linksys network name ....
Name (SSID) box- Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>

  • Trouble accessing the internet on a WRT54G wireless router

I’ve run into a problem setting up a wireless network at my friends’ house. The problem is accessing the internet from the wireless PC that has a WMP11 Wireless PCI Card to a WRT54G wireless router.
The wireless PC is running Windows XP and it sees and connects to the router with “excellent” signal strength but will not connect to the internet.
The router is currently set to WEP 128 bit encryption security. I’ve tried disabling the wireless security all together but when I do that the wireless PC no longer sees the router.
I have no trouble connection to the internet thru the wireless network I have set up at my house when I bring his computer there. But my router is an older Linksys 802.11b so maybe that’s why.
Anyone have any ideas what I should try other than telling him to buy a new wireless G adapter card?

If earlier your Wireless Adapter is working fine with the same network & computer .... try upgrading the drivers of the aqdapter .... from http://linksys.com/download  .... uninstall the older drivers & reinstall newer drivers ....

  • Using an iBook as a wireless router

I recently found that i could use another computer like a base station. so i want to ask ppl some questions before i do this to make sure that no one will be able to try to use my slow AOL access as i have been using other people's wireless internet (firewalls=no problem). I want to make this a closed network but i do not know how to do this. Also please tell me how to do this, I know you go to shared and the internet section and create a computer to computer network... other than that how do i do this?

To use your iBook as a wireless router you can use the internet sharing feature. You can setup a WEP password if you click the Airport Options button.
    Goto SystemPrefences->Sharing->Internet Tab.
From the drop down menu select 'Share your connection from Built in ethernet'
In the section 'To computers using' check Airport.
Then choose the 'Airport Options' setup a wep password.
    Finally click the 'start' button.
However WEP encryption can be cracked so it is not really secure.I see the internet sharing feature built into the Mac OS as an on the fly temporary thing you can use for example if a friend comes round who needs to get online.
The best solution is to invest in a wireless router.

  • Setting up security and such for wireless router wrt54g without admin rights (work computer)

We are moving, I am in a new location with a new company and my only computer is this one from work. Trying to get my home network setup, I'm locked out of admin rights on this thing and am trying to set up the above router. I thought I had a modem problem at first, but finally I am online wired for now to the cable modem. I would like to get this router up and running, but I can't use the easy setup disk, and I just tried using the easy setup download and it is locked out as well. How can I get my router setup with security, with no admin rights on the pc?
This will be my first wireless router, so I am very green on the specifics and terminology. Any help is most appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thank you toomanydonuts!
I will do this when I get back to the townhouse this evening.
Just so that I am prepared for tonight - I want to confirm and ask a few questions on the "options" and note a couple things I noticed that may help with answers...
Internet connection type - should be easy, I assume there is a "cable modem" option.
SSID - I do not know what this means or what to choose
wireless encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2) - Which is best, or is there one I must pick due to computer used and such, I also want to get my Nintendo Wii accessing correctly, I saw these options on that setup, though it didn't work per my first message on the board. I assume whatever encryption method used needs to be chosen for the Wii?
wireless encryption password - I think I can handle this one
    A couple of notes -
this laptop has this always on radar looking for wireless connections - how can I name my router so I know it's mine, other than the fact that it is the strongest signal. Maybe that's a network setting?
Thanks again, glad I came here.
Edit: I suppose I should add, just to ensure - in order to do this process through the url provided above, I need to be ethernet wired through the router to the modem? in order to access last night, I was straight into the modem, didn't seem to work wired through the router.

  • Win 2000 PC can't connect to a WEP enabled BEFW11S4 wireless router

    Hi,
I just set up my wireless router to use WEP with 124 bits encryption. However, when I installed the WUSB11 wireless adaptor on a windows 2000 PC, it couldn't connect to the router and get an IP address. If I do an "ipconfig", it shows the "Cable Disconnected" state and no ip address.
    Could any one help?
    thanks very much.

    Thanks for your advice.
However, I'm not sure where to enter the WEP key on a win2K PC. It doesn't ask for the key during the installation. In "Infrastructure mode", only SSID is required. In "Ad hoc mode", SSID and channel ID are required. But neither asks for the key.
When installed in "infrastructure mode", it shows as "cable not connected". But if installed in "Ad hoc mode", the network connection is enabled and it tries to get an ip address, however, it fails to get a valid IP address from the wireless router (192.168 range) and returns with a 169.254 address.
Seems that I missed a step somewhere to put the WEP key?
    many thanks.

  • How can I mange a wireless router behind a wired router?

I've got cascading routers configured as recommended in Linksys Answer ID #3733.  Wired router BEFSR41 is closest to Internet and wireless WRT54G  is behind it.  I want to mange the wireless router remotely.  Should routers be on the SAME IP segment or different IP segments to accomplish this?  What special settings are needed?  What is structure of browser address to access administrator logon of second router?

It sounds like you want to be able to remotely admininister the entire network, via the Internet  ---  sorry, I don't know how to do that part of your problem.
However, the network setup itself sounds fairly simple:
It sounds like you want a network like this:
    Modem  ----  BEFSR41  -----  WRT54G   )))))  wireless computers
                              |                            |
wired computers        optionally more wired computers
The best way to set this up is to leave all your devices on a single subnet (for example, 192.168.1.x ) and convert the WRT54G to a WAP (wireless access point).
BEFORE connecting the two routers, set the WRT54G to the following:
Local IP address:   192.168.1.2   (this assumes BEFSR41 is still set to 192.168.1.1, with default DHCP server range, and that you are not using 192.168.1.2 elsewhere in your network)
SSID:  use a unique name   (Note:  do not use "linksys" )
    SSID broadcast:  enabled
    encryption method:  optional
    encryption key:  optional
If you want your wireless computers to only be able to access the Internet, and not each other, and not any printers or other network devices, then set "AP isolation" to "enabled"  for this increased security.
    DHCP server:  disabled
Next, power down entire system.   Then wire any LAN port from BEFSR41 to any LAN port on WRT54G.  Do not connect anything to Internet port on WRT54G.  Note that all remaining wired LAN ports on both routers will be functionally identical, so you can plug your wired devices into any of them.  If you need more wired ports, add an SD208 or SD216 switch to either, or both, routers.
BEFSR41 will control all the usual router settings:  DHCP server, port forwarding,  remote access, etc.   WRT54G will only control its own wireless settings.
I'm sure someone else will be able to help you with remote management of the network.

  • Wireless Router

As of Tuesday, unable to connect to the internet using linksys  BEFW11S4 wireless router.  Status showing limited or no connectivity. Any suggestions?

Are you referring to your wireless connection? If it is saying limited or no connectivity, it means that it is not getting an iP address from the router. Are you have to do is reconnect to your wireless network and make sure to type in your correct network key if ever you have encryption for it.

  • Using Imac intel based as wireless router?

Can you use your imac as a wireless router? If anyone knows, email me.

One more thing..... Does using your Imac as a wireless router reduce your processing speed signicantly with only one laptop sharing your internet connection? Would buying a separate wireless router be preferred?
    Hi
You can, if the following are true:
    - The iMac receives its internet through the ethernet
    port
    - It has a built-in Airport card
If so, you can use Internet Sharing. Launch System
Preferences, go to Sharing, then Internet. Select:
    - Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
    - To computers using: Airport
Click Airport Options to set a name and encryption
settings for your new network. Then click Start.
Other wireless-enabled computers should now be able
to see and connect to your new wireless network.
