Wireless Router Range extender?

Hi, I just got a modem with a built in wireless router, but I already have another wireless router that I'd like to use to extend my wireless network, so that my main modem will wirelessly connect to my original wireless router.
Does anyone know how I can do this? So far I'm having no luck getting it to work.

Use the web browser setup procedure to manually configure the network information on the extender. The push button requires specific network settings and the router may not use the settings required by the extender.

I need to improve the wireless router range of my time capsule. What sort of extender (repeater?) should I be considering? Will it affect my use of the time capsule as a hard drive backup?

In order to insure compatibility, you need to consider an Apple AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme if you are thinking about "extending" or "repeating" the network wirelessly.
It is also possible to extend the network by connecting an AirPort Extreme or Express back to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, which will provide better performance.
If you have a new "tower" model of the Time Capsule, then you would need a new "tower" version of the AirPort Extreme to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If you have an earlier "flat" or "square" version of the Time Capsule, then an AirPort Express would be a good match for the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
An "extender" will not affect the operation of your Time Capsule other than allow wireless devices to connect from a greater range at higher speeds.

  • New router, Range extender or Powerline network adapter?

Have WRT310N router connected to my desktop in the basement. The signals are very weak upstairs when use my laptop.
Have just purchased a new Samsung Smart TV (located upstairs).
To get stronger signals for streaming, internet connection on TV and laptop what should I be getting?
new router i.e.  EA4500, range extender or powerline adapter.
    Thanks

I have used range extenders and they do work but you should know that the wireless range extenders are 'repeaters' they capture the signal and rebroadcast it.  Therefore the throughput you get with a range extender will typically be less than 50% of the speed of similar router.
If you have the ability to run an ethernet cable between the two rooms I would suggest a 2nd router setup as an access point.
If you can't get ethernet to the 2nd room then I would suggest powerline, In fact I'm currently running a E4200 V1 router with one of it's lan ports connected to a Trendnet powerline adapter and then I have a second Powerline adapter in a room where I couldn't get an ethernet cable the second powerline adapter is connected to a WRT350N router set up as an switch, for devices such as an Xbox and Blu-Ray Player.

  • Need help configuring Cisco/Linksys wireless router to extend wi-fi signal to living room

My U-verse wireless gateway is in the back of our house. We live in an old 1920's home with solid wood walls. For our macbooks, we get a pretty decent signal, but my wife's iPad 2 get's poor wi-fi speeds. I bought a Cisco/Linksys WRT160N wireless N broadband router. I have a wired connection in my living room (going to a 4 port switch) then connected to my DVR. I tried hooking up the new router but ended up getting no signal on the iPad. In fact, it caused other issues. I ended up disconnecting it and re-booting my gateway. All came back fine. This wireless router replaces a similar unit that went out in after a power failure, so I know this can be done, but I forget exactly how I confiured the old one. I would like it to "extend" my signal to the living room, but I am also willing to create a new network (different SSID). Do I need to turn of DHCP? Are there any web sites that can assist me in configuring the router? I wish I didn't have to deal with this. The signal from the RG is great when you are in the back room (20+ down). But my wife gets about 3 down on her iPad in the living room. Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
I was doing some research on how this can be done. It does not appear there is an option in the Cisco router to set it up as an access point, but there are several options you can do to extend your network.
The first thing you can do is just set it up as a router behind router setup, and you will just have two separate networks. Make sure the DHCP pool does not conflict with the U-verse's gateway of 192.168.1.x.
The second thing you can do is connect the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on your Cisco router instead of using the internet port. This should make it work like a smart switch.
With both setups, you want to probably change the SSID, network key, and wireless security settings to the same thing for wireless roaming abilities. That way, anyone that configures their wireless connection will be connected to both networks. Just make sure the wireless channels are not the same, and I would suggest having them at least 5 apart.
    Hope this helps.

  • Conecting AEBS and AExpress to a Verizon wireless router to extend network

I have Verizon Fios and with that I have the wireless router that Verizon provides. The signal is great as long as I am in my office. However, in other rooms in the house the performance is decreased significantly. Before having this router I was set up with an AEBS and the performance was great.
My question is, "how can I extend my network by linking the AEBS and/or the Express with the Verizon router?" I have to have their router so I would be using the AEBS or Express to boost the signal through my 2 story brick home.
    Please help if you can...thanks

I'm not familiar with the Verizon FiOS-supplied routers, but you should be able to connect an AirPort Extreme Base Station to the FiOS router via Ethernet cable and create your own wireless network with all Apple devices set up in bridge mode.
Turn off the wireless network on the FiOS router, if possible. The idea is that all wireless clients will receive IP addresses from the FiOS router but will connect to it wirelessly via the Apple devices.

  • Wireless Router range

    Hello,
While searching for a WiFi router maybe a month ago, I was surprised at how hard it was to find the range of a wireless router. Furthermore, it would be helpful if the datasheets / pdf's would contain tables that compare speed and signal strength to distance in different building materials (wood, concrete etc.).
Well, I chose WRT160N then, hoping that it has enough of range. It took several days in order to figure out the shape of the WiFi area. I think it could be helpful if the shape of the area could also be included in the documentation.
    Thank You

    Thank You for your reply.
To achieve optimal range and signal strength, it would be helpful to know the range and shape of the WiFi area - it could make it much easier to find the best position and orientation.
In addition to changing the position and orientation of the router, I also tried changing the configuration. When I changed the Radio Band to 'Wide - 40 MHz', the range seemed to improve a little. Changing the channel didn't seem to have any effect on the range or signal strength. Network Mode is 'Mixed'.
We have 3 buildings and it would be nice if all of them could be covered. When the router was on a table on the second floor, there was barely any signal in the other 2 buildings (no signal to 1/5 only. The connection speed was 1 Mbps).
After we had studied the shape of the WiFi area for some days, we found that the signal strength and speed was almost normal when the router was turned upside down and placed a little higher.
However, there still was a room with low signal in the same building that the router was in.
The room was the most distant from the router. Well, it had only 2/5-3/5 signal strength.
    1) I think that the shape of the WiFi area could look like this:
    http://www.indreksnt.tservu.pri.ee/Pildid/WiFi_area.png
actually, the picture is not proportional and the router should be smaller but I hope that you get the idea..
Here is the map of the 3 buildings:
    http://www.indreksnt.tservu.pri.ee/Pildid/WiFi_map.png
The red spot is the router.
The green spots are the measure spots.
2/5 means that there are 2 bars of total 5 according to Windows Wireless Network Connection Status.
As it was about a month ago that we last measured this, I'm not sure if I remember the numbers accurately enough..
    2) Yes, I think so. At least, when we changed the slope of the router, then the signal strength in the most distant room in the same building changed from 1/5-2/5 to 3/5-4/5.
    3) Wireless G.
    All suggestions are welcome,
    Thank You

  • Turning off wireless n range extender at night

I want to save energy. How can I turn off the Linksys N300 range extender at  night. Can just unplug or will this screw things up.Is there a button

If you don't mind my asking, where was the range extender purchased from? From what I know, if it is purchased in Europe there will be a power switch. You can just unplug the power cord if there is no power swtich/button. As long as the range extender's reset button has not been pushed, all the settings saved will still be there. Turning it off will not "screw" it up.

  • Router Range Extender

I have a WRT 160N router and was wondering if some elelctronic unit is available which can pickup its signal at
close to the end of its range and re-broadcast the signal?
    Thanks

I think your should Try to go for a Range Expander (WRE54G) or and access point WAP200. This are the Devices which will expand the Wireless Range.

  • Problem configuring Airport Express to AT&T wireless router

How do I connect my Airport Express to an existing AT&T wireless router to extend the range?

I was told by a Best Buy sales person that...
If only I had a nickel for every time I heard that.....
A long time ago Apple sent diplomatic mail to Best Buy informing them of this wrong information.... unfortunatley looks like Best Buy paid not much heed to it.
BTW, the reason Apple had to contact Best Buy on this, was because AppleCare was getting bogged down by clients calling wondering why their routers were faulty... since they could not extend third party routers.

  • Second WRT610N as wirelessN range extender?

I link to the internet through a highspeed DSL broadband connection with an  ISP-supplied 2wire modem/router.
From this modem/router, I have an RJ-45 cable connection to a Linksys WRT610Nv2 Wireless Router, which I have set up as a wireless access point.
There is a major dead spot in my building (concrete and steel construction) which I have tried to correct with a Linksys WRE54G wireless-G range extender.  This has proven to be an ineffective solution, the signal does not reach more than five feet from the extender and is slow.
    I have these questions:
    1.  Can I set up second WRT610N as another wireless access point (with my same network settings) to function as a seamless range extender?   I presume I need to run a cable from the ATT modem/router to this second WRT610N.
    2. Does Linksys have another solution?  Does Linksys have a  wireless-N range extender?
    3. Is the best solution the Hawking Technologies Wireless 300N Range Extender, which does not have to be wired to the ISP modem/router?   Is this device compatable with the Linksys wireless-N Router [WAP]?

It is always better to use ethernet cable in terms of speed. Though it's a little messy with wires all over.
    1. Yes. You need to run a cable from the modem to the 2nd router.
    2. I think there is. You need to search linksys website or call/chat with their support for more details.
    3. Though it might work with your current setup, compatibility will be an issue. I'd suggest pair it with a linksys extender/expander.

  • Help with a WRT400N with a Range Extender

I have a Linksys WRT400N and want a Range Extender to boost my signal, can I use the D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender with this router ?    (I don't want the Linksys WAP4410N because of it's unreliability and terrible reviews by users.)  Any ideas are greatly appreciated !
    Thanks

Yes you can use it, First thing which you need to check is if the D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender is compatible with WRT400N Router.

  • RE2000 N300 Range Extender

    hello,
My Internet provider is Bell, fiber optic with TV and phone. There is one room where the signal is week so I purchased a Range Extender  (Linksys Wireless-N Range Extender, N300 Dual Band). For the last three months everything was working fine until last week when I woke up to no Internet. I did a few reboots on the router and nothing worked. I then remembered that I had an Extender so I unplugged it and then my Internet came back. I tried and tried to reinstall the Extender but without success and when I thought it was going to work, it would erase all the information on the router. I would have to call Bell over and over again to get them to reprogram the router. I called Linksys support and they couldn`t get it to work either. I exchange the Extender for new one but I get the same result

    Hi Gerarld,
This can be caused by an interference. Try changing the wireless channel of your router to avoid some conflict. For the Range Extender try to do another reset again. Make sure that the firmware of the Range Extender is up to date. You may also do the following steps:
    1. Press and hold the reset button until the power light blinks
    2. Hardwired the computer to the router
    3. If you are using a laptop, disabled the wireless adapter or turn off the wireless switch
    4. Open a browser (Chrome, Firefox or IE)
    5. Type 192.168.1.1 or refer to this LINK on how to manually configure it
    6. Once done configuring the range extender, check if you can get online wired to it. If you can, that means it is already communicating to the router.
