Wireless Router RTS and Fragmentation

If I'm streaming video, does anyone know if it's better to have a large Fragmentation and RTS, or a smaller one?
My D-Link router recommends an RTS of 2347 and Fragmentation of 2346, but I would like the best performance for video streaming. Thanks!

well on the router's setup page, click on the advanced wireless settings... try reducing the beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...also N transmission rate to 270mbps...check whether it makes any difference or not.
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

I have a VPN client in my laptop and i am able to connect it. after connecting the vpn i am able to browse all the sites. why i am not able to browse the sites without connecting the vpn? If i directly connect to the modem (i.e without router) i am able to browse.
Is there any configuration settings i am missing out?

Yes i think you are missing some configuration setings on the router ....
As it is a DSL connection .... you can use this link to configure the router using DSL connection ....

I JUST INSTALLED THE WRT160N ON MY DELL DESKTOP AND CAN ALSO SEE IT FROM MY LAPTOP. THE PROBLEM IS THAT NOW MY PRINTER CANNOT CONNECT TO IT WIRELESSLY. I PRINTED A NETWORK CONFIG PAGE AND IT SAYS NETWORK NAME IS LINKSYS WHICH WAS THE OLD WIRELESS ROUTER THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED. I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA BE SMART AND CHANGE THE NETWORK NAME WHEN I INSTALLED THIS NEW ROUTER TO BE MORE SECURE, BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK. HOW CAN I GO BACK AND RENAME THE NETWORK. THE BLUE LIGHT ON THE TOP OF MY PRINTER SHOULD LIGHT UP WHEN IT IS CONNECTED BUT IT DOESN'T
    THANKS

Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field

  • TS1398 My wireless router failed and I had to purchase a new one. My security on the new one will not allow me to use the same password. I entered a new password, but of course it is not on my ipod or ipad mini . How can I enter new password ?

My wireless router in my home has failed. I purchased a new router, but it will not allow some of the characters which I used for my old password. Therefore I cannot access the internet with my ipad mini or my ipod touch. I am unable to change the password on either device. How do I go about changing the password on these units so that I can access the internet? Thanks

  • Copying wireless router password and settings to a new Powerbook

I recently bought a second 15" powerbook after my girlfriend bought my former one.
I bought a Lynksys WRT54G Wireless G Router and after some configuration, I successfully connected her powerbook to my DSL connection wirelessly. However I now am having trouble connecting my new PB wirelessly. I am a bit apprehensive about messing with setting a new password, etc, since I might mess up her wireless connection. I remember it took some time to set the router properly.
Is there a way to copy, and or see, ALL of the settings that I configured in her powerbook for this Lynksys Router, so I can copy them correctly to mine?
When I tried before, I had something screwed up because I kept getting different errors as I tried different settings.
So I need to retrieve the PASSWORD and SETTINGS for the Lynksys Router from her BP and copy them to mine.
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Thanks for that info.
I will post this to the Airport section.
The problem is that even after copying all of the settings from my girlfriends PB, including a long password starting with a $, my airport won't connect to the Lynksys wireless network. Airport is turned on (on my powerbook), and 'Ive chosen the proper wireless network with the proper password in network settings. I also added my PB Mac address to the Lynksys router when I was hooked up via an ethernet cable, but I still can't connect the the wireless network. I have both Powerbooks side by side. Hers connects wirelessly and mine doesn't.
    I'm missing a setting somewhere, I believe.
    Thanks,

  • Wireless Router, Sleep, and Connectivity

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4, connected wirelessly to a new Linksys WRT54G router (with the latest firmware installed).
Several times per week, I find that my iBook does not "see" the router after waking from sleep. This is easily corrected by rebooting the iBook. However, I'd rather not have to reboot.
The router is using WPA2 encryption. I had a D-Link prior to the Linksys, and remember the same thing occurring. I understand that others have experienced this as well with various routers.
I am interested in any suggestions of how to avoid rebooting to regain the signal.
    Thank you in advance,
    Steve

Try changing your settings in System Preferences>Network. Set Location to Automatic, and Show to AirPort and select the AirPort panel below. Add the name of your network and the security method used. Change "By default, join:" from Automatic to Preferred Networks, again click on "Apply Now" button.
After that, click the "Options..." button and check through what's offered to see how you might want to restrict access. If you use your iBook to access outside networks, you don't want to make that too much of a hassle for yourself, so I'd recommend checking off the setting "If no preferred networks are found: Automatically join an open network" Again click the "Apply Now" button.
In that way, your iBook will first look for your specific preferred network at home, yet still latch onto an open network when you're away.
In addition, if there are a lot of interfering systems around, use interference robustness.
Finally, you could always change to using another channel, some will be better than others.

  • WIreless Router WRT54GS and DSL Modem

I'm going fo a week of trying without any success in configuring my wireless net at home. The modem is ok, configured by my ISP and gives me Internet easily when I attach the cable diretcly to my notebook. However, when I put the Linksys router in between it never works, neither wired, nor wireless.
I've tried a lot of things, including change the modem from router to bridge (when I turned it to bridge it never worked, forcing me to go back to the routing mode). So, the modem is already doing the authentication, it's configured as PPPoe. What I need is to make the Router only do the job of transmit is wirelessly, and that is what I'm not achieving.
note: My OS is Windows XP and the router lights it all normally when connected. I even see the wireless network broadcasted with the name I chose and excellent signal, but even if I succeed in conecting to it, I can't navigate at all.
note 2: I've tried the Linksys CD and the Easy Link Advisor, and both failed before completing the installation. The Easy link couldn't see the modem. The cd always stopped while trying to configure or to acess the Internet.
I beg for someone to solve this cause for the first time in my life I'm considering pay for some tech to resolve this.

well, can u pls tell who is ur isp??
try to config the router manually instead of using cd---reset router---open setup page---check Internet IP Address in Status page
if ip: 192.168.x.x, then, in the WRT54GS, local page change the local ip to: 192.168.2.1---power cycle entire n/w---this should work
pls check this 1st, and let us know---we can proceed further from there

  • I have a printer (HP LaserJet 2100) connected via ethernet to my wireless router (Netgear) and want to use it from my MacBook Pro.

However, the print & scan window just allows me to click on 'add', but then eveything is greyed out and the printer is not displayed.
I was able to connect the printer without any problems to my Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows (Vista) systems and I'm used to having the least problems with Macs up to now.
I've read about similar problems here and followed the advise, but the problem remains.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks

For you to "see" the printer in the Default view after you click the plus button to add, the printer would have to support an advertising protocol like Bonjour. For Linux and Vista, you would have added the printer by selecting a protocol and entering the IP address of the printer. You can do the same thing on the Mac. In Print & Scan, after you click the plus button to add, select the IP icon and then enter the IP address of the printer. Change the Protocol menu to HP Jetdirect-Socket (this is called RAW Port 9100 on the other OS's); leave the Queue name blank; change the Name to LaserJet 2100; leave the Location blank and select the supporting model name in the Use menu. Click to Add and then see if you can print.

  • Advanced Settings to Improve Wireless Range (Fragmentation, RTS, and beacon interval)

I've got a WPA wireless network set up that utilizes a total of 4 WRT54GL routers as access points (on channels 1, 6, and 11 [the two APs furthest from each other both utilize 11). Each AP generally supports about 5 clients at a time (though sometimes as high as 10).
Generally, everything is working, but the clients furthest from the access points occasionally lose their connections, and some users have reported periods when they are completely unable to obtain an IP. I am virtually certain that this is based on poor signal strength resulting from distance from the APs and/or RF interference from other APs in the building. I have done everything possible to improve signal strength by router placement, optimizing channel usage based upon RF surveys, and upgrading to high-gain omnis.
This leaves nothing to do apart from tweaking the advanced wireless settings to marginally improve problems related to weak signal and/or RF interference, so I've been reading everything I can find on these boards and elsewhere about changing Fragmentation Threshold, RTS threshold, and beacon interval. However, I'm left with the following questions.
    1) There seems to be disagreement about Fragmentation threshold and RTS threshold settings. Some (including the Linksys Technical Troubleshooting Wizard) recommend that both be set to 2304. I have also seen people insist that Fragmentation be set to 2306 and RTS to 2304. A few recommend 2306 for both thresholds, and some advise 2306 for Fragmentation and 2307 for RTS (though by my limited understanding, it simply disables RTS when the value is higher than the fragmentation threshold value). Which of these settings is best? And more importantly, WHY is it the best? Generally, I understand what the settings do, but I am reluctant to change them when there doesn't seem to be a consensus about exactly what they should be.
    2) With respect to beacon interval, I've seen both 75ms and 50ms recommmended to replace the default of 100ms. For a network of my size (4 APs, averaging 5 users each), will increasing the number of beacons (and hence the RF traffic even when the network is idle) pose a problem? Also, I'm a little less clear as to how this would improve connectivity.
Since these settings will affect all users, I want to make sure that I'm using settings that will be beneficial on the whole. The last thing I want to do is inadvertantly make things worse, and since I can't test things directly from the standpoint of each user, I was hoping that someone could explain to me in greater detail what settings I should try and, more importantly, why.
    Thank you for your help!

I changed my Beacon, RTS, and Frag values to the above values and now I'm unable to connect to the wireless network anymore. I tried to match the RTS and Fragmentation settings in my wireless utility (Hawking Wireless - RT73) to the new values, but I can't connect anymore. I didn't see anywhere i could change the Beacon number in the utility, but I wonder if that is my problem... Any ideas?
I have no internet, no network connection. I can connect to other networks in range, but even though the network with these altered Beacon/RTS/Frag values is detected, I cannot connect to it. I can send packets but all received packs fail. (CRC Fail, I think)
I can't get back into the web setup for the router, so is there anything I could do from my end? Find an adapter that lets me configure the Beacon setting?

  • Problem with Dell Printer and Wireless Router

I have a new Linksys Wireless Router (3100) and it handles 3 laptops, PS3 fine.  But I have a Dell 715w network printer (also new).  I have it set up on the network, and it works fine upon setup.  The problem is the printer does not work all the time.  Sometimes I can get an error message, sometimes it says it is busy, and other times it literally takes a long time to load and then does not print.  I usually can get it to work again by rebooting and turning off the router and printer and laptops, but this hit or miss is very annoying and I never know when it will do this again, usually after a week or two. I wonder if the problem is that the 3 laptops all have different OS - XP, Vista and Windows 7.  Dell tech support won't help as they say they don't support routers, but I am wondering whether the problem is ina s etting or if this printer is malfunctioning.  any help would be appreciated

Yes. You have to key-in the IP address to the printer.
Basically, if the printer is set to obtain IP address from the router, it will be provided with a random IP or any IP available for the next device that will connect, on this issue, your printer. So there's no permanent IP address for the printer, making it a little hard to find at times. Compare it with the a static IP, your computer can easily map it since it doesn't change.

  • Using Time Capsule as a 'wireless' router and backup using Time Machine

I have a question about backup speed on my 1 TB Time Capsule. I purchased a Time Capsule about a year ago and have an imacg5 and two Mac laptops that I setup to use the wireless router capability and as the backup drive for all three computers.
I was experiencing a problem in that the backups from the imacg5 were never completing even though the Time Machine window said it was only backing up several MBs. In order to 'fix' the problem I finally 'erased' all of the backup files on the Time Capsule using Airport Utility. I had also run Disk Utility on all of the drives to verify and fix any problems.
When I initialized the wireless connections and initiated backups I connected to the imacg5 to the Time Capsule with an ethernet connection as well as via Airport and began 'backing up' my laptops, then started by backing up individually, various disks on my imacg5.
The laptops have rather small disks and backed up rather quickly. The imacg5 has hundreds of GB of data spread across several disks. I had decided to 'backup' the disks individually in case that had been the cause of my original problem.
My systems disk, Macintosh HD, backed up about 110 GB at the rate of 8 GBs per hour. I was encouraged.
My next 'data' disk, LaCie 320 #1, backed up about 209 GB at the rate of 2 GBs per hour. I was confused. This 'backup' took several days to complete. Once it completed, Time Machine has run about every hour as expected and completes the backup in about 3 minutes.
I still have two more disks on the imacg5 to backup. Does anyone have any idea what rate I should expect or should I just add the drives and let it take its course?

    I say just do it!
When connected via ethernet I turn off the airport connection on the computer. I found that frequently my mom's macbook pro would choose the wireless connection to her Time Capsule rather than the ehternet connection to do the back up. This was slower than via the ethernet.

  • I need help setting up a wireless network and getting connected to the internet. I have a RCN cable modem now and tried to install a wireless linksys today and it was a disaster

I have a MAC desktop and RCN cable that I have internet through now. I tried to set up a linksys wireless router today and could not get the network settings right, or figure out how to create the network, or get connected. I was successfull for only a few minutes because my phone and laptop had picked up the signal. However my desktop still would not connect to the internet. I had to restart my cable modem after because even after returning to directly inserting the desktop to the modem I could not get on the internet. I am able to get on now but would like to have wireless for my laptop and phone. Do I have to have an Apple router? Are there any easy steps I can take to set up a network without doing any damage to my desktop? I am so lost and have been getting pop ups and even my time changed.
Please help a new person to Apple!

why dont you go to linksys.com/downloads and get the quick install for your adpter

  • Hooking up/configuring a WRT54G2 wireless router to my wired modem/router.

Problem description: I have bought a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G2) in order to connect it to my ADSL2+ modem/router (a TP-Link TD8840) to provide wireless internet access to my iPhone and laptop. I only intend to power on the wireless router when I need it, not have it on all the time wasting electricity.
Attempted fixes: Configuring the WRT54G2 per the install CD, but this appears to mean I must have my wireless router always powered on in order to access the internet even when I'm not using the wireless. Ideally I just want to turn on the wireless router as and when I need it.
Operating system: Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3.
So, as my description says, I bought a WRT54G2 so I can browse the web on my iPhone using my DSL connection rather than the cellular (3G) network. I currently have the WRT54G2 plugged in from one of its four ethernet ports to an ethernet port on my wired modem/router. The IP of my modem/router is 192.168.1.1, which also appears to be the default ip for the WRT54G2 So I can't access my WRT54G2's admin screen to properly set up the network.
At this point I feel as if I should reset the WRT54G2 to factory settings and start from scratch, but I lack a coherent set of instructions to point me on my way. It's a bit frustrating because I'm pretty good with computers generally, but networking obviously is not my thing. Can anyone please help

    Hi modeski,
To setup your WRT54G2 router and make it work with your modem/router there, chnage first the IP of the WRT54G2 from  192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 before you connect it to the modem/router.
In other words, you are cascading two routers.
    Hope this help!

    Otherwise, you will...
#1 NOT be able to go anywhere online because of Double NAT.
#2 Or if you can go some where online then..
..For example: If you want to allow users from the net to connect to your computer, you can't just portforward in your generic wireless router. You must also portforward in the Westell 6100. (Called Double NAT Forwarding)
