Wireless Router Security Setup

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but I am fairly new to my mac. (love it by the way)
We have DSL at home and recently bought a Belkin Wireless G router. I put in the cd that came with it and selected the Mac option for install. Now, after this it took only a few seconds and was done. All connected and up and running in nothing flat. My wife was able to connect via her PC laptop no problem.
I want to secure this wireless connection and I can't quite figure out how. Oddly enough there is no Belkin icon for me to click on to get into any properties. When I type belkin into my spotlight search nothing comes up. I assume I should be setting up the security directly on my mac somehow but just not sure how.???
Have tried reading and searching but still can't find anything. Right now I am assuming my question is just too simple so no one else has this problem but I just can't get my pea sized intellect to figure it out.
Thanks All!

Well, you do have Security on your Mac, but what you want is to address the router's Setup page
Run Safari and type this into the url bar...
http://192.168.2.1
You should see a Menu there.
Come to think of it, this is probably the best source on how to...

I think this might be your Router.

  • 2nd wireless router security settings

Hi, hope someone can answer this for me.
I have a WRT-610N and I've just set up a 2nd wireless router (E3000) to extend range of my wireless network.
Same SSID, same subnet, DHCP off etc.  All works fine.  Network passwords I set identically.
My question is: what security settings should I apply on the 2nd router?  i.e. I have MAC address filtering on the internet-connected primary router, the WRT-610N - should I apply this on the E3000 also?
    thanks

    1. wireless MAC filtering is useless anyway. Don't set it up. It's only causing problems to you. (You would have to set it up on all access points/routers)
    2. Setup WPA2 Personal with AES and a strong passphrase. That's secure.
    3. Set up identical SSID and wireless security setting on both for a roaming network.
    4. Choose different channels on both, if you use static channel assignments to avoid interference.
    5. Make sure SSID broadcast is enabled.

How would I go about accessing the security settings of my wireless router? I'm on windows XP.
    -Thanks

    1. Go to www.linksys.com. Click Downloads. Select your router model and version. Download the user guide. Read it.
    2. Open your browser at http://192.168.1.1/ Further instructions are in the user guide.

  • Wireless Router WRT54G Setup without CD - Having problems with manual setup

Hi.  I have a WRT54G wireless router that I haven't used in years because my old cable provider supplied me with a router.  I recently switched cable providers & they don't provide a wireless routers.  I would like to use my WRT54G router, but I don't have the cd.  I figured it wasn't a problem because I can just do a manual setup using the ip address 192.168.1.1.  I receive the pop up window to enter the user name & password.  I follow the instructions & just type in the password field the word admin & l left the user name blank but it doesn't work.  Can someone please help?  I know that I can fix this problem.  It doesn't make sense to spend money for another router when this can be a simple fix.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I agree to sabretooth, you must do a reset on the router. You must have setup a password before to access the router page. Resetting the router will reset it's settings to the factory default settings. Push and hold the reset button for 30seconds then power it off for 10-15seconds. Once the power light goes solid, go ahead and reconfigure your router. This link should help you: Setting up a Linksys router with Cable Internet service

  • Wireless Router Security Question

I use your Linksys WRT 600N router with login & PW on a satellite internet connection with file sharing for a second laptop. If someone trolled by on the lake within a hundred feet could they get my signal and access my pc files while I was logged on…or would they be asked for a PW to login?
    DD

Setup your wireless connection using WPA or WPA2 as security.  They will need your passphrase to connect to your network.  Do not use Linksys as your network name.  Change your router password to something other than admin.

  • WRT546 v5 wireless router security settings mysteriously reset?

Hi. I owned a WRT546 v5 Linksys wireless 802.11g router. After purchasing it roughly 2 years ago, I set up my network name and set WPA security. About a year ago I noticed that it has somehow been reset to the default settings: network name - linksys / . Rather chagrinned and a bit frightened, I checkly reset it to my preferred network name and WPA security.
I just noticed the weekend that it had once again reset itself to the default settings. Last time I know for sure my network name was correct was about a month ago. It something I want to set and not worry about.
I want to make clear that the router has not been moved, nor has the reset button been pushed. It is out of the way and not messed with.
Has anybody else experienced this problem. I do not particularly like the idea of my network security being randomly reset without my knowing.
    thanks

    Hi!
This happens when the router loses its firmware......try upgrading the firmware....
I personally dont think its due to someone hacking your network or a weak WAP key.....try upgrading the firmware and reinstalling the router..and that should work for you...
This is a common occurrence with this kind of routers...so you dont have to worry about it...
Revert Back if you still face any problems!!!!

  • Help a newbie: Windows XP, Netgear WGT624 Wireless router & AE

I just installed a Netgear wireless router and am trying to setup the AE to play music on my home stereo. For some reason when I connect the AE to the outlet close to my living room home stereo, the Airport setup Assistant doesn't recognize my base station. I don't know what to do. I know my wireless router is setup correctly, but I can't figure out the AE setup process. Please help!

Do you have any wireless encryption activated on your Netgear Wireless Router? If so, you should disable it, then your wireless router should be able to connect to your AE. Then configure your AE to match your security settings of your wireless router, then finally re-activate the wireless security on your router.
(Make sure you select "Join an exisiting wireless network" when configuring the AE, enter the data carefully to match the security information in your router.
Once you re-activate your wireless security in your router and restart the AE, it should join your network.

  • Wireless router/wap as 'hotspot'

question; i have a wrt54gl and a wap54g, here's what i want to do, i'm not sure if this is possible or not - - i would like a wap that is pretty much wide open, but prompts a user to OK through an agreement, enter a password and it lets them online, but then times out after a period of time. this is for public internet access for office visitors. our internal wap will be mac filtered and encrypted, we just want some way to offer access to visitors but somehow limit it and have a disclaimer before they can surf/etc. similar to what places like panera have.

You don't have the right equipment to do the job you described.
If you connect these two devices and leave the WAP "wide open", this will give your visitors total and unsecured access to your network.  This is because the WAP must be wired to a LAN port on your WRT54GL  in order for the WAP to work, and anything wired to a LAN port on your WRT54GL has access to your network.
Linksys routers are designed for home and small office use.  I don't know of any way to make an agreement pop up on a system using a Linksys router.  It sounds like you really need a professional  (Cisco) system to do this.
The only Linksys router that I know that offers a "hot spot" with some type of agreement or login procedure is the WRV54G, which uses the Boingo Hot Spot system.
If you want to setup the system you described WITHOUT the agreement, then this is fairly easy using 2 wireless routers, similar to this:
Modem  ---  unsecured wireless router  ---  secured WRT54GL
                          192.168.38.1                                  192.168.1.1
In this setup, the WRT54GL is connected through its Internet port (not a LAN port), and this is what will protect your private network.  For the unsecured wireless router, you could use just about any Linksys wireless router, but for simplicity of maintanance, I would suggest you get another WRT54GL.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi, I need help to secure my linksys wireless router, i tried the setup guide but i didnt work..

    hello
I need help securing my linksys wireless router with speed boosters. In august me and some friends took over this rented house, and with the house we got their old internett system, we use a linksys router, This nett is open for everyone, but we want to secure it for other users. We didnt get the manual and i've tried the guide on your site but it says it cant be changed. The old owners didnt either know what to do. Is there some help i can get with this? Is there some buttom i can push to reset it and then make it possible?

Connect your computer using wire to router. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser's address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name, if admin doesn't work reset router and do above step again. Go to wireless tab, here change wireless network name from linksys to any other name. Save the settings. Go to wireless security sub-tab here change security mode to WPA personal etc, and enter you secret key in passphrase/shared key, Save the settings. This secret key will be security key of your wireless network.

  • Using AX as wireless router, how to set up w/ security and airtunes on XP

I previously had a Linksys wireless router. I just purchased an Airport express to use as the wireless router (and remove the Linksys router) as well as use the Airtunes functionality.
After some trial and error, I have been able to wireless connect my computer to the AX on it's own (the linksys router is now unplugged and out of the equation). I can connect to the internet fine on my PC (XP Pro SP2).
Trouble is, when I use the Network Setup Assistant, it shows the apple network listed, but it can't connect to it, no matter how many times I try, reboot my machine or reboot the AX. I've tried both the "setting up a new network" and "editing an existing network" option, and in each selection, after a few minutes of trying to connect to the network, I just get a failure message.
If I try and use the Admin utility, nothing shows up in the left-hand list window, and when I Press re-scan, still nothing shows (it doesn't even appear to scan).
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can't find simple instructions on how to set up the AX as the only wireless router for a PC and set up security and Airtunes (I'm assuming enabling airtunes is done in these applications, as I haven't seen anything about that yet either).
Any ideas on how this is done with a PC? Much thanks!
    Dell 4500 series

I have found the 'DHCP Reservations' option on the AirPort Extreme to be buggy.  I seem to remember it causing IP conflicts for some reason.  I think what I remember is that if the computer with the reservation was off, and the DHCP server then handed out that IP to another DHCP client, then there would be a conflict when the reserved IP computer was turned back on.  Maybe it was an issue in ealier versions of the AE or OS X as the case may be, and maybe it's been corrected, but I've never bothered using it agian since the method I describe below has always worked without fail.  Also, I'm guessing DHCP Reservations would work fine if one manually enters IPs outside of the DHCP range but in the AE 'DHCP Reservation Setup Assistant' the IP options provided are within the DHCP range which to me makes no sense and increases the potential for IP conflicts.
Here's what I do to setup a mixed environment of static and dynamic IPs on my network.  It works like a charm and does not require the DHCP server (beyond the distribution of dynamic IPs to hosts using DHCP).
For machines on my network that are accepting services from the public network, I set them up with static IPs using the 'Manually' option (System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Configure IPv4).  The settings for 'Router' IP address and 'DNS Server' IP address should both be set with your gateway/router LAN IP).  Use an IP address below or above the DHCP range of adresses (in AE/Internet/DHCP/DHCP Beginning & Ending Address).
i.e. if my subnet is 10.0.1.1 and my DHCP range is 10.0.1.100 to 10.0.1.150, you could set the static IPs on your local hosts as 10.0.1.x where x = any number from 2 - 99 or from 151 - 200 as an example.
All other machines and devices that do not require static routing are setup as DHCP clients and get a dynamic IP from the AE.  To me it's a simpler setup though it might take a little extra time to setup initially.

  • How do I set up my wireless router for a secure connection

I lost my password to access my router. I reset  the router to added a wireless printer and I now I'm trying to secure the connection. I have tried 192.168.1.1 IP address, but it takes me to Bing.com. I can't get to the login page to type in the admin password.

First of all do not use the Wireless computer to access the Router's setup page.Use the wired computer.Check the ip address you are getting from the router..Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, adjust Browser Settings... Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on OK...Close the IE and re-open it...
    Now try.......

  • Setting up security and such for wireless router wrt54g without admin rights (work computer)

We are moving, I am in a new location with a new company and my only computer is this one from work. Trying to get my home network setup, I'm locked out of admin rights on this thing and am trying to set up the above router. I thought I had a modem problem at first, but finally I am online wired for now to the cable modem. I would like to get this router up and running, but I can't use the easy setup disk, and I just tried using the easy setup download and it is locked out as well. How can I get my router setup with security, with no admin rights on the pc?
This will be my first wireless router, so I am very green on the specifics and terminology. Any help is most appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thank you toomanydonuts!
I will do this when I get back to the townhouse this evening.
Just so that I am prepared for tonight - I want to confirm and ask a few questions on the "options" and note a couple things I noticed that may help with answers...
Internet connection type - should be easy, I assume there is a "cable modem" option.
SSID - I do not know what this means or what to choose
wireless encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2) - Which is best, or is there one I must pick due to computer used and such, I also want to get my Nintendo Wii accessing correctly, I saw these options on that setup, though it didn't work per my first message on the board. I assume whatever encryption method used needs to be chosen for the Wii?
wireless encryption password - I think I can handle this one
    A couple of notes -
this laptop has this always on radar looking for wireless connections - how can I name my router so I know it's mine, other than the fact that it is the strongest signal. Maybe that's a network setting?
Thanks again, glad I came here.
Edit: I suppose I should add, just to ensure - in order to do this process through the url provided above, I need to be ethernet wired through the router to the modem? in order to access last night, I was straight into the modem, didn't seem to work wired through the router.

  • How setup a WRT54G2 Wireless Router to connect to a SmartPhone to Retrieve E-Mail

I have a new WRT54G2 Wireless Router and I can Surf the Web on my Smartphone via the Router but I am unable to retieve my E-Mail like I used to do with my old Wireless Router.
Anyone know what setting I need to change on the WRT54G2 Wireless Router?

    Hi Richard,
    Welcome to the community forum!
Did you check the mail setup in your smartphone to see if anything changed? Check if the incoming and outgoing mail servers are correct.
A software update might have reset the settings.
If all looks good in the smartphone mail setup, do you recall if you had to open ports in the old router to make email work?

  • AE setup for wireless router and streaming music

I'm attempting to setup my AE base station as a wireless router and use it to stream itunes through a home stereo. I'm using a new Dell Inspriron w/internal wireless card. It is detecting other wireless networks but not seeing the AE base station (which is flashing yellow even after resetting). Any input as to what I am missing?

    Hi.
I am accessing internet thru a wireless router, and it works great. Plugin AE (setup to run on the same network) and the internet gets so slow it ceases to function though I still have a valid IP. When AE is plugged in though, iTunes recognizes the speakers connected, but when I try to select them, it says 'connecting' and the program stops responding. Oh yeah, it's iTunes 5.
I've used my AE in hotels and shops where I've plugged it into an ethernet cable and the internet has worked automatically. I take it home and it stops. Try to play some music over it and it doesn't work either. What gives.
Anybody have any ideas? I'd love some help.
    thanks.
