Wireless router suddenly stops working, have to unplug to fix

I actually had a similar problem with an older Linksys router in the past, but it was wired.  Basically, a port would stop working and I'd have to unplug the router and plug it back in to get the port to work again.  Well, now with my WRT160N, wireless will just suddenly cut off.  Wired computers still work fine, and don't even notice a difference, but every wireless computer suddenly disconnects and refuses to reconnect (this includes Vista, XP, and non-Windows devices like TiVo, PS3, etc.).  All I have to do is unplug the router and plug it back in and everything happily reconnects and works great.  No settings are being changed during any of this.
Another problem which may be related.  I work from home and VPN (using the built-in Windows VPN client) to work.  It will work great, but all of a sudden I get disconnected from VPN only, every other aspect of the network and Internet works fine, but VPN just completely dies on me.  Unplug the router, plug it back in, and VPN has no more issues.  No settings, or anything else, are changed at home or at work during this problem.
So what I'm wondering is if Linksys routers have some sort of internal counter and every now and then it rolls over to a negative, gets confused and just stops working, or are they just really sensitive to outside interference and somebody's cordless phone in the neighborhood is causing this problem.

Try reflashing the firmware. You can get latest firmware from www.linksys.com/download , also change radio band to wide and standard channel to 11

  • Wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working - changed batteries still did not help

    Hi
I have an Envy 20 all in one touchscreen with a wireless keyboard which has been absolutley fantastic until now.  The wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working while composing an email.  I replaced the batteries and checked them with a volt meter to ensure 1.5v. They are a name brand alkiline battery.  I tried re-booting the computer and pressing the blue connect button under the keyboard.  The only keys that seem to work are the volume up/down and mute; the rest of teh keyboard does not.  Any idea?  I like the factory keyboard so I am hoping it is not a faulty keyboard.  After market keyboards will use a USB port.
    Thanks

  • The volume on imovie09 suddenly stopped working.  How can I fix the audio volume?

The volume on imovie09 suddenly stopped working.  How can I fix the audio volume?
I have no idea what triggered this.  Other projects work with volume.  But my current project will play the audio but no volume. HELP please.

How exactly stopped working?  Three things to try
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Firefox 3.5.25 suddenly stopped working, have old computer this is as high as I can go

I have a mac powerbook about 5 years old. The only version of FF I can use is 3.6.25 and have been using it all along. 3 days ago it suddenly stopped working. I lost my igoogle page. Icannot sign in as the button does not work. When I try to search nothing happens. I reinstalled it 3 times, still nothing. Works fine on my ipad2.

It's tricky to try to troubleshoot this one as 3.5 isn't really supported anymore. However, as you reinstall Firefox, all your settings are actually still kept in your Profile folder, so if it's related to your settings, reinstalling won't fix the problem.
What you could try is creating a new profile and see if that solves it -- note however that this will be like installing a second copy of Firefox and you will not have access to any of your bookmarks, passwords, etc. It is basically like starting from scratch (though your information is still kept in the original profile -- they can both coexist).
This article covers the procedure of creating a new, second profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles?s=profile&r=0&e=sph&as=s

  • Model BEFW11S4 wireless router just stopped working with Mac; still works with Windows

I have the above model Linksys wireless router, hard connected to a Windows XP Pro desktop unit. I also have a Windows XP Home laptop. My wife has a Mac PowerBook laptop. On Thursday last week her laptop started having trouble connecting to Internet. Problem is intermittent--sometimes can get on and sometimes now. When on it might connect to a web site normally or sometimes takes a long (as in loooooong) time connecting. My XP Home laptop continues to connect quickly and will move from one URL to another easily; no problems. She took the PowerBook to Panera and got on the Internet with no trouble. She was on for at least a half hour and suffered no outage or slow-downs. Came back home; got the same problems as before. Only thing that has changed is a big snow on Thursday, same day as the trouble started. The relationship is probably non-existent, but it's the only thing different from Wednesday (when working well) to Thursday (when started having trouble). Any thoughts? I naturally welcome any responses. Thanks, Michael Plog

Hello people. I'm having the same weird trouble: I'm having this BEFW11S4 to which I connect via another wireless AP and a switch a Windows XP PC and a MacBook Pro computer (both with Ethernet cable connected to the switch, to which the AP is connected). Both the above computers work seamlessly, but sometimes the other iMac I have in WLAN doesn't surf anymore. It can ping both MacBook Pro and Windows XP PC, but doesn't anymore ping the BEFW11S4. Wireless connection is crypted with WEP-64 bit key. When this is happening, also from the Windows XP PC I cannot get on the web interface of the BEFW11S4. It seems to be "locked" somehow. After unplugging the power and re-plugging it in, everything works again also on the iMac. Anybody managed to solve this issue? What version of Firware do you guys have? I have 1.50.13... regards.

  • Wireless router has stopped working

A few hours ago, my Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router stopped working, for no apparent reason. The internet connection is still working, however, when I hook up my computer to the wireless router, I can no longer receive internet, as well as when trying to acquire a wireless signal on my laptop (my laptop shows that I'm getting a signal, however, In actuality I am not).
    Please help,
    Alex

Please try the following if you have not done it already.
Powercycle the router by removing your power cable from the back then remove the power cable from your modem. Wait about 1minute and plug your modem back up then plug your router back up and wait about 3-5 minutes for the items to sync with each other. Now try to connect.
    Good Luck,

  • Airport Express Wireless Network Suddenly Stops Working

Hi, I have a wireless network set up with a single airport express using WPA/WPA 2 Personal wireless security. The 5 daily clients on the network are 2 Mac laptops (Both Mac OS X.4), 2 PC's (1 Windows XP and 1 Windows Vista), and an iPhone.
Internet comes in from a Comcast connection directly into the airport express, which is set to create a wireless network and play music wirelessly using AirTunes. The Base station software is up to date, on Automatic Channel selection, and connecting to the internet using DHCP, automatic configuration and sharing a public IP address.
For some reason, every couple of weeks the airport network just stops working altogether. My Macbook Pro shows that it still has a connection with full signal to the network but has no internet connection. When I disconnect and try to reconnect, all attemps to reconnect fail. No other clients are able to get internet at this point, and I cannot even access airport settings from my Macbook Pro unless I manually reset the airport by unplugging and plugging it back in. With this reset the network starts to work again immediately and continues for several weeks again. Does anyone have any idea why it would have this random shut-off every few weeks? Thanks

I have a similiar problem. Every now and then, connecting to my Airport Express network results in "there was an error joining the airport network". It appears to me that this happens at random. Usually, the problem is solved by rebooting to Windows XP using Boot Camp, connecting to the network and then rebooting to OS X.
Recently, it's become worse: the problem persist but sometimes even rebooting to Windows doesn't solve it anymore. When I try to find out what's going on using the Airport Utility, the program tells me "airport utility was unable to find any airport base stations". The only thing that helps in this case is resetting/unplugging my Airport Express and reconfiguring it.
The problems occur independently from the type of security I'm using. It's very annoying and disappointing, since my current high-end MBP has this problem and my previous mac (an iBook) never had it.

  • Right-click on Magic Mouse and Volume Controls on Wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working

I am running Mavericks 10.9.2 on an Late 2012 iMac.
One morning the right click on my Magic Mouse and the volume controls on the wireless keyboard stopped working.
These mouse and keyboard themselves seem fine; they work okay ehn used on a MacBook.
Everything else about the mouse and keyboard is fine.
This seems to be a problem what has been around for a whole, with a wide variety of solutions.
    I have read

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19660884#19660884
    and have tried
Clicking on and off the 'right click' checkbox in the Mouse System Preferences - No effect
    Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist - No effect
Restarting in Safe Mode - When starting in safe mode, the computer crashes out and restarted
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM - Is it CTRL+CMD+P+R or CMD+OPT+P+R ?  Neither work for me (I do try it using a wired keyboard, but never get the double chime)
Upgraded to 10.9.2 - no effect
Moved the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHIDMouse.kext and AppleHIDKeyboard.kext and and back in (and re-authenticate) - No joy
Moved the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHIDMouse.kext and AppleHIDKeyboard.kext from a working MacBook on same OS - Made the keyboard misbehave even more
Has anyone got any other cures for this?
    Thanks in advance.

Here is what worked for me.  My scrolling on the mighty mouse and a few buttons on my wireless keyboard weren't working properly.  I reset the SMC, a link explaining the process is below.  Hope it helps you too!

  • Router Suddenly Stopped Working!

I have the Linksys WRT54G And it was working fine for years! Then today my computer shut down and when I turned it back on there was a connection but my computer was not responding to any commands. The icon shows full connectivity excellent connection. When I try to go to a web page it shows Connection Error and cannot get to any web pages.
I am able to get on other wireless connections from neighbors but not mine. I have gone thru different directions on here and I am not technical and don't understand what is being said. I try to go to 192.168.1.1 and it asks for a password which I don't have. I have tried everything such as password and admin and get nothing.
I am able to get my ip address and default gateway address and don't know the next step.
I can't call for help because I don't have tech plan with Linksys.
Can someone help and explain step by step what to do like I was a 2 year old lol. All these tech terms I don't get!!!
    Thank you!!!!

Hi ss2beagles and welcome to the forums!
Try to hard reset the router and configure everything from scratch. Please refer to the links below for the configuration whether you are a DSL or Cable subscriber. Please do note that, all settings will be gone and you need to connect your computer with a wire to the router to perform the steps.

  • My router suddenly stopped working.

    Here's my situation:
I have verizon FiOS and i decided to have both my Actiontec router (the one they provided) and my Linksys router working. I changed the IP address of the linksys router so that there wouldnt be any interference between the two routers. This worked for a long time... until now.
I was on my laptop and suddenly lost connection to my main SSID (the one broadcasted from the linksys). So I decided to log into the router, I typed my linksys router's IP address into my browser and I did not get any results. my actiontec routers IP is 192.168.1.1 while my linksys router is 192.168.5.1 - and i do not even know where to begin to fix this. I tried downloading the Easylinksys thing to help, but to no avail.
can someone help me and provide a step by step guide as to how to go about solving my problem? Your time to help me will be greatly appreciated.
and my router is the wrt54gs v.4

Could you please try this ?
Connect your Computer directly to your Modem
Unplug the Power to the Cable Modem and re-connect it after
30 Seconds. Meanwhile, You could try restarting the Computer
Now, Once the Computer has restarted completely, and once
all the lights are lit up, check the Online Connectivity.
If you are able to go Online with the Modem,
we could fix the Issues with the Router.

  • Home wireless NAS suddenly stops working

I had a working wireless NAS up until a couple days ago, but when I tried to mount the NAS wirelessly as I always do - Connect To Server (from Go menu) - I get the error message: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://storage" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
Everything had been working fine for months. We connect our 4 home Macs to the NAS server wirelessly through a Belkin 54g access point, with the NAS connected by ethernet cable directly to the Netgear DSL modem/router.
All 4 Macs have 10.4.9 and Airport Extreme. All 4 get same error.
The access point and modem/router check out okay. Other peripherals hooked up to modem/router work fine thru wifi network.
I checked the HD inside the NAS and it's working okay. I connected it directly to my MBP via ethernet cable and I reformatted it as a FAT32 drive (like before). I formatted it as one big partition, without password protection. And I disabled DHCP Server setting (like before). I also tried with it enabled, but same result.
I still get same -36 error message.
Seeing as the NAS was working just fine wirelessly up until a couple days ago, I can say we haven't changed anything or done any updates to software in the meantime. It was working fine in 10.4.8 and in 10.4.9; also working fine both before and after recent Security updates and Airport updates.
This is all while trying to connect via SMB. I had been using that because it was such an easy first time setup. And it worked great for months.
Any and all suggestions much appreciated. Either:
    1) solving the SMB-related problems, or
    2) providing assistance to set up for a different connection method.
I'm not too savvy on the issue, so your help is invaluable.
    Thanks.
    Chris

I wish I could help, I'm getting the same error with a new LAN storage HDD, the drive is fine when connected to USB but can't be accessed using Mac or PC over the LAN connection.
Don't know what to try next.
How do you find the MAC address or a LAN server?

  • WRT310N Issues - Router suddenly stopped working

    Hi,
I've been using my WRT310N for a few months now, and have had quite a few issues.  I have 1 desktop connected via ethernet, and 2 laptops connected via wireless (1 N and 1 G).  Aside from some random annoying cuts here and there, it's been running relative smoothly.
I just upgraded my internet service and got a new modem (Motorola SB5102) and have everything hooked up the same way as before - except this time, internet doesn't work.  The lights are all normal (blue for power, wireless, and internet LEDs), and green for Ethernet 1.  However, internet DOESN'T work - wired OR wireless.  I've tried using diagnose/repair on my desktop with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and on my laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit... but it says that it cannot be fixed within windows, and is a hardware issue.
I've tried resetting the router, both by pressing the button and by resetting it in the 192.168.1.1 page.  I've also tried replugging everything, and trying different cables.  I've tried powercycling the modem and the router.  But still, no internet, despite signal being broadcasted and the LEDs showing everything's A-OK.
I seriously don't know what else to do.  Is there something wrong with my router, or can I fix it somehow?
    Thanks for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What's the physical address you're getting from the modem? Now hardwire modem-router-desktop. Go to 192.168.1.1 >> MAC address clone >> enable it >> click Clone My PC's MAC (make sure that the MAC add is the same as the physical add from the modem. Use the same computer that's connected to the modem) >> click Save Settings >> go to Status, check for the IP add, gateway, DNS. If you're getting valid ones, you should be online. If not powercycle router and modem for 30 secs.

  • WRT54GS suddenly stopped working

My WRT54GS Linksys wireless router suddenly stopped working. It is not an Internet problem because if I disconnect my router the Internet will start working again. I am connected thru a DSL connection. My router's power light will not stop flashing but all the other necessary lights are on. Any help pls...
Message Edited by nova_flush on 04-18-200702:30 PM

If the Power light is flashing thn thr is 100% problem with router. Power light should be solid green and other lights can be flickering.
Try to change power cord or reset the router for 30 sec and unplug pwer cord and plug back after 10 sec.
Remember powerlight should become solid green.
If not contact tech support bcz it may have gone bad and u will need replacement,
so contact as soon as possible before u run out of warranty period of the router.
