  • Linksys Wireless Router: WRT54G Version: 2

I was just curious, since I have been talking to someone about the Linksys Routers and they were saying that WRT54G Versions 3, 4 & 5, all work successfully. Then when I asked him about Version 2, he said that he THINKS that the router will work.
Can someone please give me an answer: Will the Linksys Wireless Router: WRT54G Version: 2 work with a MacBook Pro?!

I get from 3 to 6 Mbps wireless and wired, which is considerably slower than my other Windows-based desktop and notebook over my 30 Mbps cable connection. My Dell notebook and desktop consistently get 15 Mbps wireless and 22 to 28 Mbps wired. Mac OS is relatively new to me, so I haven't had a chance to read as much I need to about optimizing connection speeds. But, I can either fix it by optimizing it, or perhaps Apple will come out with a firmware update since some people have been complaining about slow connections speeds and dropping connections.
In my work, I have several computers going at the same time, and for typical Web surfing, I see no difference in speed between the 6 Mps on the Mac and the 15 Mpbs on the Dell---it's really limited anyway by the Web site server. I do notice a difference in download times, but even for very large files, the difference is noticeable but not a problem. And, there has never been a problem streaming video or downloading trailers, etc.
Of course, only five years ago, my cable connection was first 128 Kbps (which was high speed then), then they jumped it up 1 Mpbs, then 10 Mbps, and now 30 Mbps---so the 6 Mbps on the Mac still seems pretty fast to me.
Speed will always be slower over the wireless compared to your Ethernet connection, but once you get speeds in excess of 1 Mbps, you only see the difference in download times, surfing is the same.

  • I need to limit the range of my wireless router WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.

I need to limit the range of my wireless router   WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.  I don't want to put on a password if I can avoid it.   Thanks for you advice in advance.  Milwaukie

Trying to confine a wireless signal to your home is not a practical solution to security concerns.  The distance that a wireless signal will travel is mainly limited by the receiving antena and sensitivity of the receiver.  An ordinary wireless receiver can probably pick up your signal for 200 to 1000 feet.  A great receiver could probably pick up your signal from a mile or more.  The best alternatives are:
    a) convert your system to a wired system, or,
    b) encrypt your wireless using a good encryption method (WPA or preferably WPA2) and use a strong password.

  • Lost IP access to Linksys wireless router WRT54GS v.4. How to restore?

Apologies for the long post and multiple questions. If you can answer at least one of them, I will be appreciative!
While attempting to set-up wireless networking between my new Westell Model 6100G and Linksys wireless router WRT54GS v.4 (with most recent upgraded firmware), I lost access to the Linksys. When I hooked up the Linksys again via Ethernet to my XP PC with the modem no longer connected, I was unable to access it via IP 192.168.1.1. All I get is a blank web browser page (with the usual “diagnose, etc.” button). I assumed this is because the IP address conflicts with IP for the Westell, but I am also concerned if it is hardware failure. I have tried resetting the router, but no luck. I have tried ipconfig /all which gave me a different ip address. But when I tried to access the Linksys using this ip address, I was unsuccessful. I hooked up the router to a different pc with no present Internet access and tried IP 192.168.1.1, but still no luck. Trying the IP I got from ipconfig /all at this new pc failed as well.
Is there a chance I have a hardware failure? I had access last night when the linksys was at its original location (I only checked it once before turning in), but I seem to have lost access ever since I moved it closer to my desk and to a new electrical outlet. When turned on, the Linksys has green lights in the right places, so it looks fine, but, again, no access via IP.
If it’s not hardware failure, how do I find out what IP address the Linksys actually uses now if it is no longer 192.168.1.1? Or how do I change it?
Is a WRT54GS v.4 worth the trouble or should I start over and upgrade to a newer router?
Is Linksys the best choice with the Westell 6100G? The configuration procedures seem very complicated compared to my ease of router/modem configuring in the past.

"_when I setup the Westell modem in bridge mode, will I lose my Internet connection?_ "
    Answering my own question: "yes."
I found what looks like a good step-by-step guide to hooking up a Westell 6100 to a Linksys
    router at:
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/vz/4._Hardware#13600
It provides more detail and up-to-date illustrations than Verizon's instructions at
    https://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/Networking/SetUp/QuestionsOne/87126.htm
(which appear to be for an earlier version of the Westell 6100), although they are otherwise similar. The DSLreports faq confirms that Internet and IP access to the modem will be lost during the setup phase. For a "newbie" at such linking, this bit of information is very helpful!
Thank you, Telcoguru, for confirming that I should have followed the instructions exactly from beginning to end before becoming concerned and skipping steps.
I will close this thread and wait for a long lazy day, to try linking the Westell and the Linksys again. If I need to post again, it will hopefully be with more specific questions about specific steps that haven't worked as they should.

  • Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G Version 3

I just purchsed and installed a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G Version 3.  It works great in my somewhat small ranch type house.  I'm presently just using it so I can wireless access the internet with my Dell notebook computer from any room in my house.  My operating system is Windows XP.  If I decide to upgrade to Windows Vista in the future will my Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G Version 3 still work ok?
    Frank

yes, i think it will work... just make sure that the firmware of your router is up-to-date with the latest releases from linksys... you can check it out at http://www.linksys.com/downloads and just choose the model no. and version of your router... also, try to check the knowledge base website at http://www.linksys.com/kb ... i hope this helps... good luck buddy

  • Wireless Router WRT54G Setup without CD - Having problems with manual setup

Hi.  I have a WRT54G wireless router that I haven't used in years because my old cable provider supplied me with a router.  I recently switched cable providers & they don't provide a wireless routers.  I would like to use my WRT54G router, but I don't have the cd.  I figured it wasn't a problem because I can just do a manual setup using the ip address 192.168.1.1.  I receive the pop up window to enter the user name & password.  I follow the instructions & just type in the password field the word admin & l left the user name blank but it doesn't work.  Can someone please help?  I know that I can fix this problem.  It doesn't make sense to spend money for another router when this can be a simple fix.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I agree to sabretooth, you must do a reset on the router. You must have setup a password before to access the router page. Resetting the router will reset it's settings to the factory default settings. Push and hold the reset button for 30seconds then power it off for 10-15seconds. Once the power light goes solid, go ahead and reconfigure your router. This link should help you: Setting up a Linksys router with Cable Internet service

  • Setting up security and such for wireless router wrt54g without admin rights (work computer)

We are moving, I am in a new location with a new company and my only computer is this one from work. Trying to get my home network setup, I'm locked out of admin rights on this thing and am trying to set up the above router. I thought I had a modem problem at first, but finally I am online wired for now to the cable modem. I would like to get this router up and running, but I can't use the easy setup disk, and I just tried using the easy setup download and it is locked out as well. How can I get my router setup with security, with no admin rights on the pc?
This will be my first wireless router, so I am very green on the specifics and terminology. Any help is most appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thank you toomanydonuts!
I will do this when I get back to the townhouse this evening.
Just so that I am prepared for tonight - I want to confirm and ask a few questions on the "options" and note a couple things I noticed that may help with answers...
Internet connection type - should be easy, I assume there is a "cable modem" option.
SSID - I do not know what this means or what to choose
wireless encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2) - Which is best, or is there one I must pick due to computer used and such, I also want to get my Nintendo Wii accessing correctly, I saw these options on that setup, though it didn't work per my first message on the board. I assume whatever encryption method used needs to be chosen for the Wii?
wireless encryption password - I think I can handle this one
    A couple of notes -
this laptop has this always on radar looking for wireless connections - how can I name my router so I know it's mine, other than the fact that it is the strongest signal. Maybe that's a network setting?
Thanks again, glad I came here.
Edit: I suppose I should add, just to ensure - in order to do this process through the url provided above, I need to be ethernet wired through the router to the modem? in order to access last night, I was straight into the modem, didn't seem to work wired through the router.

  • Wireless Router WRT54G

    Hello,
Can someone assist me. I hooked my my wireless router and now when I connect to Windows Live Messenger and do Request Remote Assistance it will not work at all. I connect through there and someone can help me with my pc problems. I did a port forward to port 3389 for messenger but it still will not go through. If someone knows what I need to do to get this to work, I would appreciate it. I am sure it is something in the settings but not sure what I need to adjust. thanks.

The easiest way to do it is to set that pc up as a DMZ.  That opens all port to that pc which opens it for attack.  Now its only a temporary fix but will allow remote acess .

  • Secure wireless router with lost password

I'm trying to secure our wireless router and not having any success. When I go to the 192.168.1.1 site and type in admin, the screen just pops up again. If I continue, after three tries I get a 404 screen. I'm guessing my husband added a password at some time, but he has no record of it and I've tried all of our passwords that I can think of and none of them work. Is there a way to get past this screen or recover the password somehow? Our network still shows up as unlocked and I'd like to get access to the account and get it locked. Thanks.

    Welcome to Cisco Home Community,
What is the model number of your Linksys router? In this case, you may need to perform a reset on the router and you will lose all settings saved in it. You'll start from scratch of setting it up again for the internet both wired and wireless to work. Here are the links below that you may help you to get this issue resolve.

  • HELP! Wireless Router [WRT54G] Suddenly Stopped Working

Hey guys, so over the past 2 weeks i cancelled a previous dsl subscription and i am now with AT&T my activation date was today and at first i wasnt able to connect to the net with my new modem... after chatting with tech suppport they made me login to the modems IP address to configure an email setting which somehow solved my issue i can browse the net perfectly when my macbook is directly connected to the modem with the ethernet cable but when i try to connect the ethernet cable to my linksys wireless router (which worked perfectly fine with the last modem ..) i cant seem to browse the net is there some kind of IP config that i have to do? i dont think the connection itself is faulty since i can successfully log on to the linksys wireless router's ip address and i can also see that connection is at full capacity in the wireless airport connection icon on the top of my window...but when i try to surf the net using the wireless conneciton it kind of just stands still and the page doesnt connect/load... can anyone give me some help pls? thakns

I'm having the same problem today. I've been using this router for a couple of years with no problem. Today the power went out, and now my router can't find the internet. I can connect to the internet if I just plug the modem into my computer, and I can connect my my router wirelessly and get into the setup menus, but the router and modem won't talk to each other. Is there any chance the ethernet jacks on the router fried somehow? When I plug my computer into the router with an ethernet cable none of the 1-4 lights comes on no matter which one I plug into. Is that because they only come on when there is an internet connection, or is there something wrong with them maybe?

  • I need Help Setting Up Wireless Router WRT54G on NTL

Hi, I've managed to setup a few home wireless networks in my time but I'm having problems with this. My gf's ISP is NTL and it is connected via a cable modem (rather than the set top). I registered my laptop using the installation software and the internet connection is working fine. I attempted to setup the router and I could connect to it, however I could not connect to the internet through the router. Previously with other routers I found an option where you could input the user/pass so that the router was automatically connected to the service, but I could not find this option. Does anyone who has setup this wireless router with an NTL setup / or anyone at all have any idea how I go about setting it all up?
    Thanks in advance

I also found this thread which helps by showing when to clone the MAC address.
Using run cmd from XP's start menu and typing ipconfig /all will show the MAC address of your machine's NIC card, if you need it.
