Wireless security settings...

I have a wireless print server, and a wireless router.  The WPS is limited to WEP for a security setting.  Does this limit the security for my entire network?  I checked the BIOS -- it has the latest.
Thanks,
-Kevin

Your encryption method is limited by the weakest wireless link in your system.  So if your wireless print server can only do WEP, then that is the highest level of wireless security your wireless system can be set to.
However, as gv stated, WEP is no longer recommended.  It should only be used until you have time to upgrade to WPA or WPA2.
I assume you have a wireless G router capable of WPA or WPA2.  If so, there are 2 reasonably secure solutions to your problem:
1)  Run a wire from your router to your WPS  (turn off the WPS wireless)
2)  Upgrade to a wireless G  WPS.

  • Unable to change wireless security settings on WRT54GS v5.1

    I'm using a WRT54GS v.5.1 with the latest firmware (v1.50.9).
Set this up this weekend - all was fine until last night when the router stopped broadcasting the signal. I've reset the modem countless times and powered it down and back on again.
The router is now working fine - but I'm unable to change any of the wireless security settings. When I try to change the setting under Wireless > Wireless Security to WEP, it just jumps back to Disable and no changes can me made. Same situation when trying to enable a Wireless MAC Filter?
Any ideas? I don't want to use the router without any security in place!

you can try to upgrade the firmware of your.
    try this link :

make sure to select the correct model and version of your router. if you cant see the model # of your router as one of the downloads, you will need to have the router replace (hope you'll not).

  • Best Wireless Security Settings-WRT54G Linksys Router

I've been running into problems attempting to set the wireless security settings for my router and then trying to connect to the internet from my iBook. As long as I enable SSID broadcasting I can find my router but the problem starts when I enable the security settings. The iBook will then ask for the password and nothing I've inserted works??? I'm at a loss. I've given up, those sorts of brickwalls can do a number on your head--major headache this weekend..so I will try again tomorrow. I thought the passphrase is your password--the only thing that I haven't tried (after searching the forums here) is putting the $ in front. Does anyone have this particular router that can give me some suggestions (in basic, simple terms please) that can help me get started on a good security setup so that I won't be scared someone in the neighborhood (as I've read previously) is scanning and can log onto my internet connection. Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Why in heaven would you want WEP to secure your network when you can have WPA which is more secure and doesn't have this kind of problems???
With the right tools (available free on the net) you can crack almost any WEP protected network in less than a day (I have done this with my friends to prove them how weak WEP is).
So imagine you set your WEP protected network, a neighbor crack it and use it, all of this while you CAN'T use your own network.
You should try WPA, good luck...
BTW: I have the same router, with WPA and SSID broadcast disabled.

  • ThinkPad X300 Wireless security settings

I just bought this machine and can't get it to load websites.  My provider says that the wireless security settings are probably not allowing the connection.  I get ethernet connection just fine.  It starts to load a site with the wireless but then gets "stuck".  I went through the Lenovo service site and cannot find a telephone number for service!  Can someone tell me the service number or what I should do with these settings?  Thanks

I posted a request in the ideas section and also sent a support request.  We'll see what happens.

  • Mifi 4G wireless security settings

I work at a "Verizon" store and I spent 30 minutes of my afternoon today watching two co-workers waste a woman's time trouble shooting her mifi.  Since I'm new they think I don't know anything so I acted as such.  The issue seems rather simple but I would like some clarification on a couple of things.
First off, the default security passcode printed on the back of her device was 14 digits in length.  Her laptop isn't the newest and runs XP.  Attempting to connect to the Mifi using xp's wireless utility generated an error stating the passcode was incorrect and needed to be either 10 or 26 digits in length.
My question here is what is the default security mode for the Mifi's wireless signal?  Also is a manual configuration sometimes needed depending on the pc's OS and wireless card?
I was also wondering if configuration of the Mifi is possible via the usb cable?
From what I can tell the answer is no but I hope I'm wrong.

    Hello,
    To answer your questions:
    1. Default security mode of the MiFi 4510L is WPA2 Personal
    2. Manual configuration should not be necessary unless her wireless adapter is out of date.  Any device which can establish a connection to a B/G/N router will be able to connect to the MiFi right out of the box.
    3. No.  Configuration of the MiFi is not possible with a USB cable.  The USB cable is for firmware updates only.  You will not be able to communicate with the MiFi through a USB connection.  Some threads have layed out steps to help people work around this feature to both charge and use the MiFi from a USB cable.  The actual connection when going through this workaround is still via wireless, but the USB cable will provide a power source to charge the device simultaneously.
One more comment from your post:
Wireless passwords are goverend by the Wireless Security mode of the wireless device, not the computer or its software.  Hence a WPA2 connection will require 8-63 characters in length for a password.  WPA and WEP have different requirements.  If the user is being prompted to enter 10 -26 cahracters to connect to the MiFi the requirement is not coming from the MiFi itself.

  • WRVS4400N Wireless Security Settings question

    Hi all,
I didn't find any informative description about the following options:
Wireless Isolation (between SSID w/o VLAN)
    Wireless Isolation (within SSID)
Could you please explain clearly what does each option mean?
    Thank you.

    Have found the following description:
Wireless Isolation (between SSID w/o VLAN): When enabled, traffic on one SSID will  not be forwarded to any other SSIDs.
Wireless Isolation (within SSID): When enabled, machines on the same SSID  will not be able to see each other.

    Hi…
In order to change the wireless settings of your router you need to login into the router configuration page. Open your internet explorer browser…in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 ( Default IP address). Leave the username field balnk……type admin as password (If you have not changed the router password). When the setup page loads fully…..click on the tab that says wireless. Just below the main tab wireless ….click on the sub tab that says wireless security. You can Change the wireless security settings here. After the changes are made click on save settings.

  • Wrt160nv2 wireless security help

Hello I'm new to this forum and had some questions regarding the wireless security settings on this router (WRT160Nv2) I have the security mode set to: WPA2 and what I need to know is which Encryption is better AES or the other setting which is TKIS or AES shouldint it be just TKIS? Any info would be great thanks still trying to figure out the router...

AES offers a higher level of encryption than TKIP, or "TKIP or AES".
Here are my other tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default wireless settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal", "enterprise" or "radius". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2.   The patch is located in SP3, so you will need SP3 to run WPA2.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • E4200 Wireless Security Question

I have an E4200 router in my home but the signal does not reach a room where I want to use a laptop.  I have an older Viewsonic VS10407 that worked well with my old Linksys WRT54GS router.  The Viewsonic is capable of WEP, WPA Pre-Shared Key and WPR Radius.  I am using WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode on the E4200.
I want to use the Viewsonic on the same network and I also want the security scheme to work properly. How do I get the Viewsonic onto the E4200 network?  How should I secure the Viewsonic signal?  Should I use the same password?

You can configure the E4200 with WPA or WEP .
Open the setup page of your linksys router and configure the wireless security settings .
If  you want to use WPA you can use the same password .
If  you want to  use WEP then the password should be from 0-9 or A-F .

  • WRT54GX2 Wireless Security Enabled DHCP blocked for wireless clients

    Hey gang,
My subject says it all.  Yesterday  I updated my WRT54GX2 version 1's firmware to the latest and greatest.I first reset the box, and rebooted. I updated the firmware. On the first attempt I picked the wrong image file. The machine halted and told me bad image. I then found and installed the correct image. I then added an Admin password, and entered a new SSID. I left the DHCP settings at the default. I then set wireless security at WPA Personl/WPA2 with TKIP&AES.
I found the wired client could obtain an IP address and to connect to the internet. The wireless clients could connect, but could not obtain an IP address.
I left the wireless security settings off.
    Any suggestions?

The wireless security settings are correct. The wireless clients "CONNECT" to the WRT54GX2. The clients stall on obtaining an IP address via DHCP. Fixing the clients with static IP addresses also does not work.
I repeat: The wireless clients successfully connect to the WRT54GX2. The WPA/WPA2 & TKIP/AES settings are correct. The clients cannot receive a dynamic IP address.
On Friday I will reset the box for 30+ seconds. I doubt this will have any effect. I reset it on Tuesday twice on Tuesday, and still have the problem.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Orange LED Wireless Security Light - WRT350N

I have the 1.03.7 latest firmware on wrt350n with a hard drive connected to the USB port of the router. Whenever I access the drive, which has a share drive and a partition, the orange LED wireless light comes on. It does not go back to green unless I save the wireless security settings again. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Should I be concerned when the LED turns orange?

I did notice the PIN when I first upgraded to the latest firmware, but didn't know what it was for. The instructions in the web interface are cryptic at best. I just set up my own password under admin. I hope this does not affect security too much.

  • How to Change Security Settings on an Existing Wireless Network

I'd like to change existing network security settings to WPA2, AES or at least to from TKIP to AES.
I'm familiar with browser access to the router and with how to change the settings on the router.
My question is how to do this as painlessly as possible for the network.  Step by step would be nice
I guess first I have to change the router settings using the computer running Easy Link Advisor?
Do I then have to disconnect/reconnect that computer?
Do I have to disconnect every other computer and then connect each one again with the updated settings?
Will the change in security settings affect my print server?  If so, do I have to set it up from scratch in ELA?
For the record, I have a WRT-300N and the print server is a 54g.
Anyone who reads this may also want to look into recent news.  May not be a big deal, but a vulnerability of WPA/TKIP has been identified.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do I really need to set security for my wireless connection. I searched for available WiFi in my area prior to installing my  network and none were available. Does that matter?
The network never did function right from the start. My desktop is a Dell Inspiron 510n and is not wireless capable? So when I tried to add my HP mni 1000 it did not let me access the Internet.
So now I have an unsecured network. Am I vulnerable to attack?
Which leads me to my real question How do I change the security settings?
Oh yeah, my home computer crashed due to a program I downloaded, so I do not have access to it. i'm a mess....
    Thanks,for any help

  • Need network security settings for wireless printer set-up

I have an older airpot extreme base station. I'm trying to set-up my wireless brother printer and it says that I need the following network information:
    SSID- I know this one
    Authentication Method (open system/shared key/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)
    Encription Mode (None/WEP/TKIP/AES/CKIP)
    Encryption Key (WEP key/Passphrase)
From what I've found, I believe that I should be using WPA-PSK and TKIP, but what is that passphrase that I'm supposed to use or where can I find out that information?

I am also trying to set up a wireless printer set up. I have an Airport Extreme and a new Brother wireless printer. Sounds perfect, right? Well, I am so confused right now. I bought an Airport Extreme while overseas a bunch of years ago and am now using it in the States. I have no memory of any info such as what is being asked from me to set up wireless printing. I don't remember the wireless security password, authenication method, or either of the Encryption thingies. I don't know where to find this information, whether it be on my computer somewhere or online. Please advise. Plus I don't use any security settings as I live pretty far from other humans in my neighborhood. Does that matter in the big picture?
    Please help a girl out!
