Wireless Security Solution

I have heard a lot of talk about Wireless Security. And have at least a working knowledge of the two possible solutions, VPN and EAP. However, how to choose the best possible solution? VPN is expensive and still leaves me vulnerable to Impersonation attacks. EAP is cheaper but nonetheless leaves me vulnerable to Brute Force attacks. Of course the chances of someone walking into our building(s) and stealing a laptop with VPN software on it are probably greater than any of the aforementioned threats. I guess what I'm looking for is a "voice from above" to guide me on which solution I can take to my superiors and say "This is what we are going to do" and why solution X is better than solution Y.
Thanks!
STU...

Stu,
VPN vs WLAN: To what degree do you want to geographically control access? If WLAN is
attractive because you’re looking at a LAN bridging solution, then VPN is over-kill. But if the distances are great (connecting from home) WLAN is out. In WLAN terms how big is your proposed "cell" (800m) or is the reach of users measured in miles? I can share with you an outline of WAP security controls for WLAN if what you’re leaning toward is a LAN-bridging solution. That should help you get your arms around security for a Cisco-centric WLAN solution. I do security 100% of the time, and I just finished due-diligence for WAP WLAN bridging.

  • Which Apple and PC wireless security solution?

We have several apple users and pc users so I want to find out what the better security solution will be for our wireless.
Currently we run LEAP and MAC authentication. I also use TKIP and CKIP. We have ACS for radius.
Would PEAP be better? And should I use WPA? I want something that is very secure and very compatible accross platforms and not too much overhead or too complex to manage.

Apple finally added support for WPA and wireless authentication in Panther (OS X 10.3). Make sure you download all the Apple updates when you connect. We are authenticating both PC and Apple users with WPA and PEAP...

  • Problem with wireless secured network in hotels

    Hello,
I'm a cabin crew member and I travel around the world almost every week. Since the update ios 6.0, my Iphone 4 16 GB doesn't connect automatically on the wireless secured network of hotels, while it worked before the update in the same hotels. My Iphone still connects automatically on my own home network, but I must ask every time to the help desk of hotels for manually connecting, by registering my mac adress on the router. Problems in Japan (Tokyo), USA (New-York, Washington, LA) and Senegal (Dakar). I'm really upset and Apple seems not concerned. Please help me.

    Welcome to the forum.
I'm not so familiar with Linux, though've installed and dealed with some distrs, but as far as i know they're mostly compatible with each other.
So, check this forum (though it's Ubuntu) and try to find solution there, if no one here helps.
Also there's a member here called wyth, which helped some Ubuntu-users, which was great. Try PM him if no help here or on that forum.

  • HT1695 changed broadband providers when I type in Wireless Security Key (WPA) on my Ipod it comes up as Incorrect password and I cannot log in

I have changed broadband providers - when I type in  their Wireless Security Key (WPA) into my Ipod it comes up -  INCORRECT PASSWORD   -    I know it is case sensitive I am putting in numbers and capitals but does not work.   Is there another Password I should be using ???

I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion thinking that it might solve the problem but it hasn't worked.
It's possible your current os has different keychain troubleshooting solutions.  Try re-posting (copy paste) over in the OS X Mountain Lion forum area and do a Knowledge Base search.
Have you tried setting up a new account to see if your issue appears there?  If you have Apple Care, give them a call or take your computer to the nearest Apple Store or an AASP as you are still under warranty.

  • Wireless security settings...

I have a wireless print server, and a wireless router.  The WPS is limited to WEP for a security setting.  Does this limit the security for my entire network?  I checked the BIOS -- it has the latest.
    Thanks,

Your encryption method is limited by the weakest wireless link in your system.  So if your wireless print server can only do WEP, then that is the highest level of wireless security your wireless system can be set to.
However, as gv stated, WEP is no longer recommended.  It should only be used until you have time to upgrade to WPA or WPA2.
I assume you have a wireless G router capable of WPA or WPA2.  If so, there are 2 reasonably secure solutions to your problem:
    1)  Run a wire from your router to your WPS  (turn off the WPS wireless)
    2)  Upgrade to a wireless G  WPS.

  • WRT100 wireless security

Last week I bought the WRT100 router.  It's kinda working (loss of signal and weak signal) so I'm not sure I want to monkey around with it but I was reading the user guide about wireless security and I am a little concerned.  Should I attempt to change the security settings to WPA or WPA2 and MAC filtering?  I'm not sure what this means but it sound like I need it not to get hacked.  Also will any of this slow down my connection wired or wireless.  Any suggestions.

Before you try to setup wireless security, you need to get your router working properly.  Leave your wireless unsecured for now, until you can get it working properly.
    1)  If you connect a computer to the router, by ethernet wire, do you get a properly working Internet connection?
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching from WEP to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Report back with your results.  When you get your router working properly, we can proceed with setting up wireless security.

  • WRTN300 wireless security resetting

I have enabled my routers Wireless Security mode (WEP), configured the clients to use the key and all is well. Then a day or so later the Router mysteriously resets and the SSID goes back to LinkSys_Safexxx and the keys are gone. Clients fail.
I have downloaded the latest firmware (WRT300N-v1.1_1.51.2) but at 6% it gives a 'Firmware upgrade Failed' message. I have a WRT300N v1, the download only offers 1.1 & 2.0. Non-wireless functionality on the router still works.
For now I have disabled the Wireless Security but the resetting is still occuring. I have restored to Factory Settings to see if this stops the reset.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance Brent
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Download the router's firmware from here
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...See if this resolves your concern...

  • Which Business Security Solution is common seen / used in your country? [malware event]

    Hi all
I believe some of the technical people would be curious and try to find out what security solutions is used for government, education, place of interest or organizations. I am one of it.  * I did not use any of their machines, I saw it through Taskbar.
I am not biased for any security products, this is based on what I seen outside.  Commonly either Symantec or McAfee in Singapore for business security.
Government managed hospital -  Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
IBM Singapore - Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
Institute of Technical Education Singapore - Symantec Endpoint Protection
Singapore Polytechnics (including Student's Personal Laptop if direct purchase) - Symantec Endpoint Protection
Primary and Secondary Schools (under Ministry of Education) - McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
    SCDF - McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
I also seen some Microsoft and ESET security products running around SMB when I was asked to go to client sites to assist setup for presentation. So far, I have not seen any other products from other security vendors.
It would be great if you can share your findings, so all of us would know which security vendors is more popular for different areas, etc.
    Cheers

  • Connecting laptop to WRT350N and wireless security

Hi, I have the following problem. I need to connect a laptop to WRT350N router. Everything works OK if I do NOT use wireless security. If I use PSK (WAP) then at the Preferred Network screen I set the settings to WAP/PSK and enter the shared key. However, this setting is overruled again and again. I can not save it. If I select my network from the networklist, many times the laptop doesn't even ask for the shared key. And if it does then it acts as if I have installed WEP on the router (which isn't the case!). I use Windows XP Home. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to solve it? Many thank, JFX

I have a second laptop connected to the router which works ok with both the non-secured and the WAP/PSK-secured environment. The one that is not working is a Sony Vaio with LAN-express AS 802.111g card for which I have the latest driver installed. For the WRT350N also the latest firmware installed (WRT350N v2 firmware 2.016) JFX

    I'm using a WRT54GS v.5.1 with the latest firmware (v1.50.9).
Set this up this weekend - all was fine until last night when the router stopped broadcasting the signal. I've reset the modem countless times and powered it down and back on again.
The router is now working fine - but I'm unable to change any of the wireless security settings. When I try to change the setting under Wireless > Wireless Security to WEP, it just jumps back to Disable and no changes can me made. Same situation when trying to enable a Wireless MAC Filter?
Any ideas? I don't want to use the router without any security in place!

  • X61 - Vista Business - Client Security Solution Error - There was a problem connecting to the TPM

During startup my x61 has been displaying the following message, 'Client Security Solution' - "There was a problem connecting to the TPM (security device) ont his computer. It is possile that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. A missing or disabled device driver could also cause this problem. Please refer to the online documentation for more information".
I have spent an extraordinary amount of time and effort to find identify the cause and a solution for this problem. It occurs whether or not virus software is enabled or disabled and numerous calls to Lenovo, Symantec, Kaspersky, and Microsoft have resulted in finger pointing and no answers. None of the vendors acknowledge the problem yet this same issue is a significant topic of concern as found in various blogs and 'help' sites. Lenovo thought it was hardware and changed the motherboard. Lenovo told me to call Microsoft since it was a Vista issue. Microsoft told me to call Lenovo since Vista Business was preinstalled on the machine. Lenovo told me to call Microsoft and so it goes. I removed Symantec's anti-virus and replaced it with Kaspersky.
The strangest thing is that the module works intermitently and it seems that everytime a Lenovo update is performed (via Thinkvantage) the problem reoccurs for sometime.
Does anyone out there have an understanding of the cause and a potential solution???

I have the same problem on an X 60 platform, which only surfaced in the last two weeks subsequent to running all of the Lenovo updates.   Prior to this, I had reinstalled all programs, starting with the Recovery Disks for the Think Pad.  Everything, including start up, was exceptionally fast.  Once I ran the most recent BIOS updates, along with several others, this error message surfaced.  It is intermittent, however, and I have not noted an issue.
In reviewing several other Message Boards, I have seen this issue raised several times.  Here is a link to a thread where the individual did achieve a solution through Lenovo, but their response is nonspecific as to what they did:   (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T400_series_ThinkPads&message.id=7143&query.id=1...

  • Running WPA Wireless security w/ OSX 10.2

I am running an older G3 iBook on my wireless system and it does not seem to work with WPA wireless security. I am using a Netgear G614 router, which works fine except with the iBook. The iBook has no problem with the wireless security turned off and I would like to avoid using WEP, if possible. I posted this in the older OS sections with no response. Help!

I have a similar problem with which I've been struggling for months. My MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working with my home router - it showed as connected but would not browse.
I have eventually boiled it down to a problem with WPA security. Ethernet networking works, networking with WEP security and no security works, but WPA doesn't. This applies to any router, not just mine at home.
When it originally failed, my MacBook was running OS X 10.4.11. Rolling back to 10.4.9 and before removes the error, but 10.4.10, 10.4.11, 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 all exhibit this failure. The fault is not evident on my iMac G5 or my new iMac Intel, or on my daughter's XP PC.
Therefore, it is a combination of hardware and software issues. So don't expect a cure just by upgrading!
Does anyone have any ideas for a cure, please?
