Wireless signal from iMac to TV?

I have a new 20" iMac G5 isight on the way and have a question. Has anyone tried to hook up the iMac (or other mac) wireless to your TV. There is products like this www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000068TYR
ref=erra_acc_dp1/026-6032989-4654855 that will send a signal from your antenna to your TV wirelessly. I thought mabye in combination with a TV tuner like EZ there would be a way to get the signal from the mac to the TV. That way I dont have to drill a cabel-hole in my livingroom floor down to my office to enjoy FrontRow on my TV. Or is there any other solutions/suggestions?
(And i dont think there will be an Airport Express A/V launched next week... though I wish!)

You should be able to connect your ATV directly to your iMac using Internet sharing, but you can't use the same NIC that the iMac is using for its connection. If your iMac is connected to your router by wi-fi, you can share the Ethernet port with the ATV. If your iMac is connected to your router by Ethernet cable, you can share your iMac's AirPort with the ATV.

  • Powerbook G4 Can't "See" Wireless Signal from Ubee Modem/Router

I was given a G4 Powerbook while out of town and it found the wireless signal in an apartment complex and a major airport just fine. But upon returning home it can't "see" the signal from my (Time Warner, Road Runner Extreme) Ubee modem/router. My Mac Mini's Airport sees the Ubee wireless signal fine, but the older Powerbook G4 can't. (The Airport signal in the menu bar has "bars" but they are grayed out.
Can an older G4 connect with the newer Ubee modem/router? Are there security settings that will allow this?

    WK

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).

  • I have an HP2055dn printer that isn't receiving a wireless signal from an Mac Airport router.

I moved the printer and it doesn't receive the wireless signal.  Does the printer need to be attached to my computer for it to receive a wireless signal from another computer?

    Hi,
Do you use access point (AP) for your network ? The printer needs to be close to the AP, not computer(s). One option is to have a booster/amplifier but this costs money and time.
    Regards.

  • TM wireless routing from iMac via Ethernet cable

I'm in Spain and have a wireless router from my ISP.  I have my iMac connected over wifi to the router.  I now have a 4th gen Time Machine that I am connecting directly to my iMac via an ethernet cable.
What I'm trying to do is to use the Time Machine to create a new wifi network while connected to my iMac by the ethernet cable.  Main reason is, I'm Spain and connect to a VPN so it appears as if I'm in the US for US television and a few other services (US citizen residing abroad).  I want to be able to sign into the VPN on my iMac and have this signal (and IP) broadcast over the wifi network I create.
I was able to finally setup a new wireless network with the Time Machine, but as soon as I login to the VPN, the Time Machine signal drops.  Is there a way to use the Time Machine as a throughput wifi device for the signal sent over the ethernet cable between the iMac and Time Machine?  It appears that the change in IP address when signing into the VPN is what may be causing the problem.  Is there a way to fix this or circumvent it?
    Thanks!

The box is a Time Capsule. Time Machine is the backup software on a Mac and only on a Mac.
Is the vpn a software version on the iMac?
Generally using a vpn and linking it via the computer to another router is particularly messy.
You are much better buying a cheap router that will do vpn with 3rd party firmware. Most vpn services recommend this kind of setup. I think you will do much better following their recommendations. Simply connect the iMac behind the vpn router when you want access to material from US.
TC do not have built in vpn and are difficult to setup for anything more than most basic functions.
I am not sure you can do ICS (internet connection sharing) from a vpn connection to the TC.. without a lot of manual routing rules.
Do a google.. there are several sites with info. Search for mac internet connection sharing vpn
In the end.. get a cheap router and use openvpn.

  • NEED HELP TO SET UP SMALL NETWORK - WIRELESS SIGNAL FROM NOVATEL U760 USB

    Hello -
I need help setting up a small network in my new home in Florida, which has no wired broadband capability - not cable, not dsl. My options are satellite (which I'd like to avoid) or wireless broadband via Millenicom (or now Virgin Mobile) using their Novatel U760 USB stick.
Here are the network components - someone please tell me how to set this up:
PC #1 (has wireless card, but I've connected it by ethernet to the router)
PC #2 (no wireless card; connected via ethernet to router)
MACBOOK, 1 1/2 years old (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs RAM), running OS 10.58, connected wirelessly to router.
AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION, Model A1143.
I'm not thrilled about using a wireless 3G signal as my primary one, (sprint network, claims 600 - 1400 kbps speed), but it costs 1/2 to 1/3 of what a slightly faster satellite signal would.
I have not ordered this service yet. Before I do, I'd like a clear understanding that I can, in fact, set up my simple network, which I'd probably do the same as it's now configured with cable broadband - both PC's plug via
ethernet into the Airport Extreme router, the MacBook connects wirelessly - AND,
    my question is this:
Can I plug the wireless card - a Novatel U760 USB-stick device - straight into that USB slot in the Airport Extreme base station and will it automatically recognize that device?
Or, do I have to plug it into the MacBook and somehow share that wireless signal between the 2 PC's (only 1 of which has a wireless card, so I'd have to get a card for PC #2)?
And help anyone can provide will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Em

    from the Airport FAQ #14:
"Question: Can I connect my Soundsticks or other USB speakers to AirPort Express?
Answer: No. The USB port is for connecting a printer, not for other devices."
Im assuming other devices include USB modems.
So, I would say your cheaper route would be to get a second wireless card and just share your internet connection from one of your PC.

  • Can't get wireless signal from Airport Express

I recently bought an Airport Extreme and Airport Express. The base station is in my office which is separate from my house so I bought an antenna from Macwireless.com. I'm able to play iTunes thru the Express perfectly but there's no wireless signal coming from the Express to connect to the internet. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?
After reading some other posts I found that my old wireless system wasn't acting up at all. It was Mac OS X 10.4.10. causing the disconnections to the internet. Great. Just great.

I'm able to play iTunes thru the Express perfectly but there's no wireless signal coming from the Express to connect to the internet. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?
If you have the Express and Extreme in a single Network there will be only one available network name to join. In that single wireless network the Express can be set up to extend range of network by using WDS, or simply as a wireless client that can print or use iTunes. If you check the Airport Utility help files it will give full documentation on how to set up either type of wireless network.

  • Does a second airport express extend the wireless signal from the first?

After a long search on his forum and not finding an answer, this is my question:
I have a Time Capsule connected to a Speedtouch router/modem. The Time Capsule has its own network. Because of the distances in my house, I use an Airport Express to extend the wireless range for my MBP. This doesn't seem to be enough to cover the whole distance (app. 35 meter) there is poor or no connection. So, my question is: can I use a second AE to extend the range even further? Will it pick up the signal from the first AE or do all the AE's in use need to connect with the Time Capsule?
The first AE is app. 12 meter from the TC.
    many thanks,
    Inge

    Welcome to the discussions!
The answer is yes and no.
No, if you are using the "extend a wireless network" feature because each AirPort Express communicates directly to the Time Capsule, not to another AirPort Express. It's like the hub and spokes on a wheel. The Time Capsule is the hub and the Express devices are at the ends of the spokes. The devices at the ends of the spokes communicate directly to the hub, not to another spoke.
Yes, if you are using the "WDS" feature because this type of setup allows a "main", "relay", and "remote" device to be configured. But, there is a big penalty with this type of system:
o The network will operate at "g" wireless speeds only
o The bandwidth on the network will drop 50% for each "relay" or "remote" device. So, with two devices, the first cuts half of the bandwidth. The second devices cuts half again. So, you are down to only 25% of the original bandwidth.

  • Cannot wirelessly print from iMac 3054a

My HP 3054a will not print wirelessly from my new imac, but it will print with the USB cable pluged in, ( the wireless button on the printer is blinking.)

Did you ever install the printer onto your wireless network?  If not, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.
Install the software making sure that the USB cord is NOT plugged in.  Choose the Network installation type when it asks.

  • Laptop not able to get the wireless signal from the lightweightAP

    Brief idea of the installation.
One WLC 5500 active -> second not yet installed
36 AP active, at the end they will be 45 (9 not installed)
Everything on the configuration look active and the light AP are registred to th

RF Channel definition done by WLC on all AP
Power definition done by WLC on all AP
    Detection of rouge AP
But the laptops can't even detect the RF signal.
I try to detect the signal with 2 laptop which they where working in other sites with wireless in place.
We ara using 3 different application or client: Ippass, Odyssey, wiresquark Any of this application detect the signal.
However, on the WLC and on the light AP are up and running. Status up, channel and power automatic definition.
On the log I can see the detection of some Rouge AP around.

  • Apple TV 2 - Slow wireless streaming from iMac

I recently purchased the Apple TV2 after being very happy with the first Apple TV. The direct wireless streaming form my iMac to my Apple TV2 seems to be extremely slow. Music videos which played fine on my first Apple TV even though the Apple TV Hard Drive was at full capacity take like 2-3min to start and then still freeze up in halfway through. I have not changed anything other that swopping out the old Apple TV for the new one. At this point the Apple TV1 gives me a much better experience than the Apple TV2. My iTunes liabrary is on the external hard drive but this has never been a problem on my iMac or old AppleTV. What could be causing the streaming to be so painfully slow.... surely this could not be the intended Apple experience.

I did have many connection issues when I first got my ATV2- found it was the saturation of wireless networks around my house. I ran iStumbler to check out what channels were available- and found none- all channels had more than 1 network on it. I think the ATV2 can lose a good connection quite easily- causing it to take longer to buffer.
I upgraded to an Airport Extreme and ran the ATV and iMac on the 5Ghz channel- that helped big time (I was the only 5Ghz network broadcasting).
So, check it out with iStumbler for Mac and you may be suprised.

  • LaserJet M1217nfw won't do wireless printing from iMac 10.7.5 after HP firmware update

My LaserJet M1217 worked perfectly until I did the recent firmware update. Now it's a brick. I called tech support, was on hold for nearly an hour, got offshore folks who kept me on even longer with marketing hoo-hah, and finally told me that the mfp was no longer under warranty and they wouldn't help unless I paid. I explained that the problem was caused by HP's own firmware update, but no dice. Tried a tweet to HP - also no luck. Tried again, had a nearly two-hour hold, couldn't understand the guy. Wasn't about to pay when the help was incomprehensible. So now I have a brick. And clients waiting. And a grudge.
I tried the fix suggested earlier in the forum - holding down the x and the right arrow while powering up. The printer showed ready...and made copies, but when I tried to print I still got printer errors saying the printer isn't connected to the computer.
So I went to system preferences and deleted the HP M1217, then went online and downloaded the HP driver again. Opened it up, but now during setup it wants the network address or network name for the desired printer. And I have no idea. I tried going on Safari and entering localhost:631/printers, but since the HP still isn't in the system, it doesn't show up. And maybe this wasn't even the right thing to try, but I'm getting no help from HP, and I'm not very technical. Argh.
Any thoughts? Or should I just chuck what was a wonderful device and never buy anything from HP again.
    Thank you!!!

    Hello SC_W,
The IP address can be fixed by going to Setup > Network Config > TCP/IP Config from the printer front panel.
Then select Manual and set the IP as manual.. I would using an higher value to avoid IP conflicts (e.g. if the current IP is 10.0.0.1, change only the last part to 10.0.0.20 so the address will remain and won't be used by other devices when the printer is powered off.)
Although I personally doubt it will help assigning a fixed IP as Mac OS X uses Bonjour hostname to communicate with the printer (which is fixed) and not athe IP address as Windows uses.
Additionally, as Apple products uses Bonjour, I could see some discussions on this matter for the Home Hub 3.0.
    Below is an example:
    https://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/HomeHub-3-Apple-Bonjour-not-working-for-AirPlay-AirPrin...
If setting a fixed IP does not help, try the folowing to isolate the problem and ensure if Multicast packets transfer may cause the issue:
From your Mac go to System Preferences > Print & Scan, click the Plus sign and then click the IP tab.
Select the HP Jetdirect Socket protocol and type the IP as the address value.
Add the printer, you will see an additional print queue listed as the IP address.
Keep using this queue for printing and let me know if you may se any difference for this print queue..

  • How to restore strength of signal from Airport Expresses on a network

I have a newly developed problem with the signal strength from two Airport Expresses drawing a wireless signal from an Airport Extreme downstairs near the router and an IMac. This network has been functioning well for some time. Recently I noted that the signal strength upstairs (for I Pods etc) was weak where it had previously been strong. The Airport Utility program reports that these AExpresses have been properly set up and report no problems (My Airport utility version was 4.something, in spite of supposedly being automatically upgraded, and when I checked "upgrades" that brought the response that there were none, even though the current version is 5.5.2, and I then went and got that upgrade anyway).
After fiddling with the upgraded Airport Utility, without knowing what I was doing, and possibly making the Airport Extreme reset itself, the strength of one of the Airport Expresses, (the one further away) increased almost to previous (normal?) levels, while the closer one stayed weak (the one Airport Utility calls "Base Station" even though, like the further Airport Express, it is an identical Airport Express wirelessly connected to the Airport Extreme downstairs). Both, incidentally are 8011n, if I have that right.
Please forgive this incoherent post, but I am confused about how to trouble shoot a network like this, when something is not going right. I have read a number of the support articles as well as posts in this discussion group, and have learned a lot in general, but not specifically for this problem.
    Thanks Rick Ward

Ok, thanks for clarifying your network requirements with the AXns.
For both AXns to be successful in extending the AEBSn's wireless network they need to be within a 25+ dB SNR range of that AEBSn. SNR, or Signal to Noise Ratio, is the base station's Signal strength (in dBm) - Noise level (in dBm). Two primary reasons for low SNR values is Wi-Fi interference and obstacles (like walls/ceilings, etc.) that prevent a signal from passing through.
You can easily calculate the SNR value by using a utility like iStumbler. Ideally, you would run iStumbler on a laptop and take signal & noise measurements at both the location of the AEBSn and at the desired locations of the AXns (with the AXns powered-off). If the SNRs are 25+ dB, then you should be get good performance with placing an AXn there to extend the AEBSn's wireless network. If not, then you won't.
Also, remember, with the 802.11n AirPorts, think of the configuration of the extended network with the main router as the hub of a wheel and the extending routers as spokes on that wheel. You cannot extend the network in a serial fashion (main to relay to remote) in this configuration.

  • Powerbook G4 Can't See Wireless Signal

My brother gave me his old Powerbook G4 which has Airport installed (10.4.x). It picked up a neighbor's unprotected wireless signal in his apartment, then picked up the wireless signal in the Atlanta airport -- no problem.
But when I returned home the G4's Airport won't pick up the wireless router's signal in my house (with the router just a few feet away).
I have Time Warner's Wideband service and the cable modem that comes with the service is both a modem and a router with dual antennas. My Mac Mini picks up the wireless signal from that router with no problem.
But the G4 doesn't "see" the signal. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is grayed out when the G4 is running. But the network name shows up in the Airport icon's drop down menu. But when I try to connect to the wireless network -- nothing, in spite of it having connected on two different networks as I mentioned above.
Question: Is this G4 too old to connect to a "newer" wireless router like the one Time Warner installed? Any other ideas what the connection problem could be?
