Wireless significantly slower with time capsule

I have a 2T apple time capsule running latest firmware 7.6.4.  I have Cox cable and a 150 mb plan.  When I connect my iMac to the modem, I am consistently getting 175mb connections.  When I connect the TC, my speed over wireless drops to a 50mb connection.  I have restarted the TC with no effect at all on the speed.  I have attempted to restore the TC's settings through airport utility, but I just keep getting the "restore" window with the "spinning circle"--i.e. it ill not restore.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.  Also, I should add that the iMac is upstairs while the TC is downstairs.  I get a strong wireless signal.  I would assume download speeds will vary, but I wouldd not expect my speed to be 1/3 of what it should be.  Thanks again.

I would expect exactly what you are getting.
Wireless is not going to transfer real world speeds higher than about link speed divided by 3, maybe even 4.
Find your link speed. Hold down the option key and click the wireless fan in the top menu area.
Take the transmit rate and divide by 3..
You should realise that wireless is limited by Apple to 130Mbps at 2.4ghz although in newer equipment you can achieve 217Mbps.
For 5ghz the speed will be 450Mbps in the same room but drops off quickly.. the above shot is with the TC in the next room.. max link speed dropped from 450 to 162 as drop off at 5ghz is very rapid.

  • Wireless comm problem with time capsule or airport extreme using iMac G5

I did buy a Time Capsule and an iMac 20" G5 January 2009...Installed all the components and created a wireless network...MacBook, iPhone and iPod Touch connected perfectly...iMac connected but started to drop communications with Time Capsule...Safari, iTunes and other internet-access programs had problems to connect 100% with the web...After reviewing all the post here and "testing/trying" several parameters, I found out that you need to define a WPA/WPA2 password protection with more than 13 characters...FYI, Time capsule is configured using 802.11n (b/g compatible)...

    Further to Bob's comments..
A Gen1 TC will be using marvel wireless chip and your 2008 and 2010 Macbook will use atheros and/or broadcom cards.. Just open your system profiler and look for info on the airport. We find the mixture of wireless chipsets especially older draft N and later N products can give very varied results.
The very fact you are linking at 270 and not 300mbps shows some reduction from theoretical max speed.. and really to get over 100mbps with any wireless you need perfect setup.. matched wireless chips etc.
Do a test uploading and downloading a file to the TC to see if the LAN speed is better than internet speed.
In reality I think you are doing especially well.. we see loads of people complaining about slow internet here who are getting less than 10% of the speed they get direct when routed through the TC. And on most occasions the limit in speed is not really going to affect what you do, as the real links to the internet are not that fast.

  • Internet speed significantly slower using Time Capsule

I have a 50MB internet connection and a Time Capsule.  I use the Time Capsule to wirelessly connect my iMac to the internet.  I also have a desktop PC with an ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  Lately the internet speeds have been very slow when I connect via my Time Capsule.  I experience slow speeds from the wireless and wired connection.  On speedtest.net, I can't even get the test page to load.  On my PC, when I unplug my ethernet cable from my Time Capsule, and plug it directly into my modem, I get fast 50MB speeds on speedtest.net.  When I plug the cable back into my Time Capsule, the speed is slow again.
Does anyone know why the Time Capsule is causing my internet speed to be significantly slower than connecting directly to the modem?  And more importantly, how can I fix the issue?
    Thanks, Brian

    Hi Brian,
Every couple of months I also experience the very slow wi-fi connection through Time Capsule (currently on firmware 7.6.1 but the problem has occurred also with older firmwares).
I have been able to fix the slow connection this way:
Test your laptop's wi-fi speed to verify the problem. For example, I'm getting only 2 MBit/s download speed at speedtest.net when the Time Capsule slows down, although my operator provides super-fast 100 MBit/s connection.
Detach the (Internet) Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule.
Connect the same (Internet) Ethernet cable directly from ADSL or Ethernet wall plug to your MacBook (or any other computer that experiences the slow wi-fi connection).
Run the Speedtest.net test again. Now you should obviously get "full" Internet speed without Time Capsule (for me it means about 75 Mbit/s, never quite the same the operators promise ;).
Detach the Ethernet cable from your laptop and connect it back to the Time Capsule (wait until the green light on Time Capsule). Test again with Speedtest.net. (Now I get around 60 Mbits/s over Wi-Fi, that is OK). Interestingly the problem now disappears and stays fixed for several weeks or even a few months, after which I simply repeat this process when needed.
I am currently running Time Capsule firmware 7.6.1 but the issue has happened on later versions also. Perhaps you will experience it after running 7.5.2 after a few weeks or months?
For background information I am running on the same Time Capsule's Wi-Fi network:
A white MacBook with OSX 10.7.3
Samsung laptop PC with Windows XP
Two iPhones (3 and old 4)
    Playstation 3
    Apple TV
    Hope this helps!

  • My Network gets slower with time capsule... why?

I Buy a Time Capsule for only for use it as backup HDD in my work but after i install it and configure it the network gets slower but onli with the machines that have the gateway configured, because the machines that dont have internet connection (no gateway and no DHCP only static ip), they are fast as allways
we use Windows Server enterprise 2008 r2 with ADSL connection and terminal server configured and a network domain on it.
and the machines have windows 7 and xp.
I hope someone know why this happened.
    thanks.

And if you don't have luck on the SL forum then I'd recommend posting on the Airport forum. You can find that at:

  • Watching movies with Apple TV slow with Time Capsule

I recently got rid of my Linksys router and replaced it with a Time Capsule, it acts as my backup storage as well as my router.
Ever since then, my apple TV is extremely slow when downloading movies. It used to take about 30 seconds to be able to watch the movie and now it's 1-4 hours.
My network speeds are fine, I can do speed tests and get 5-10Mbit down, so I'm not entirely sure what is going on.

Hello optize. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I assume that you are using the new Time Capsule (TC) to stream movies to your Apple TV (ATV) ... correct?
If so, to improve streaming performance, you may need to try some of the following to find what will work best for your network configuration.
o If both the TC & ATV are wirelessly connected to each other, switch the radio mode to "802.11n only (5 GHz)."
o If you must operate your wireless network in the 2.4 GHz radio band to support non-"n" clients, try a different radio channel.
o Connect the TC & ATV by Ethernet.
o Temporarily disable Time Machine backups from running when streaming movies.
As you are probably already aware, the iTunes Store offers both standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) video for rental and purchase. MPEG4-compressed 1,080p requires about 10 Mbps of throughput to stream without artifacts. As such, Apple’s SD and HD video would require between 2 and 5 Mbps for decent streaming over a network. A 802.11g network should top 20 Mbps in throughput, but could be lower speeds due to Wi-Fi interference. In contrast, a 802.11n network, with only n devices connected, can hit 90+ Mbps.

  • Macbook low wireless signal strength with Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have a macbook (2,1) 1,83 Ghz connected to my brand new Time Capsule 1 TB in 802.11b/g/n compatible mode. I have also my iPhone hooked up to my Time Capsule through wireless network.
I have issues on the macbook with the wifi, sometimes it drops and sometimes it is really slow.
So I just checked on Time Capsule under the "Wireless Clients" tab in "Logs and statistics" to see the signal strength I get.
I put both iPhone and macbook next to the Time Capsule, here are the results of the signal strength:
I get a signal strength in dBm of :
    -27 for the macbook !!
    66 for the iphone !!
    Here is a screenshot: http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3853/timcacapsulehm6.png
Please help, I think I have a problem either with macbook or Leopard 10.5.2 ??

The Time Capsule will provide more wireless signal coverage if you connect it permanently to the Virgin modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection. Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300 feet or 100 meters with virtually no loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule where it will be needed.
Configure the Time Capsule to create a new network that uses the same wireless network name and password as the Virgin wireless network and you will have, in effect, one "big" network.

  • Trying to Connect Wireless Epson Printer with Time Capsule

Greetings. I am a regular Mac user and using Mac for several years now. However, I am a new to network administration. I have a Linksys wireless router that syncs our 5 Macs (one iPad-1 iMac and three MacBook Pros), plus 4 Windows PC's we have in our network. I recently decided to purchase a Time Machine, and further our use of Apple technology in wireless devices. I want to back up all my computer's files to Time Machine and use the Airport Extreme functions of Time Machine while discontinuing the use of my LinkSys router. However, I can't get my Epson WorkForce 600 to wirelessly connect to Time Capsule in order to use the scanner & fax functions. Connecting the printer by USB enables the printer function, but disables all other functions of the printer (fax-scan, etc.).
I tried downloading new Epson drivers and couldn't get some of them to install. This time My iMac wouldn't install the .dmg files. I tried opening the .dmg file and installing. The pop up box requiring my administrator password, kept flashing when I tried to enter my password. Since I couldn't get the .dmg files to install, my plan to update Epson driver's didn't work. Question #1: I am looking for advice how to install these weird disk image files ?
I turned off my Time Capsule, re-connected the LinkSys to the cable modem and all my wireless functions work again, especially my printer. Sadly, no Time Capsule.
I read another discussion suggestion connecting both wireless devices together. I assume since I want to use Time Capsule that I set it up with the modem and connect the other router to it via one of the four ethernet connections. I didn't want to try this until I received further advice. I am hoping I can connect my LinkSys router to Time Capsule and use the printer through the LinkSys connection with all other computers on my network.
Question #2: How can I get my Time Capsule to find the Epson so I can use it again, or should I just use the LinkSys router connected to the printer?
Thank you in advance for help.

This sounds as if you are trying to use instructions that are more than 2 years old at this point, but you are using a new version of AirPort Utility Utility in Lion or Mountain Lion....which would not track or apply to the older instructions.
Can you confirm what operating system that you are using on the Mac that is being used to configure devices?
The new AirPort Express will connect directly to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, correct?

  • Cannot print to wireless HP 7280 with Time Capsule

I just put up Time Capsule. My windows and mac machines are able to hook into the wireless router portion with no problem. My main problem is that I cannot print to my HP7280 wireless printer. I had a belkin wireless router that I replaced with the TC. The belkin worked fine with the printer but TC does not. I am able to ping the printer and I have deleted and reinstalled the printer on the Mac with no problems. When I go to print it says that it is unable to connect to the printer and will retry in 30 seconds. I can see the items in the queue but they won't print.
One other point. I have a Canon Mp830 hooked in through USB to the TC and it works fine.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Setup a typical HP AirPrint Printer
    1. Insert the CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    2. Accept the installation agreements, and then click Next . It might take several minutes for your computer to install the printer software.
    3. You will be asked to connect printer to computer with USB cable
    4. You will be ask how you want to connect to printer, select Network (Ethernet/Wireless) and then click Next.
    5. Setup will access computer and router for wireless settings.
    6. Setup will ask if you want to use wireless settings (SSID and Password) to setup printer. Select Yes and press Next.
    7. Setup will then send wireless settings to printer.
    8. Once printer is setup, you will be ask to remove USB cable.
    9. The printer is now ready for AirPrint.

  • Wireless music player with Time Capsule :advice sought

    Hi,
All my music files in my iTunes library are stored on my Time Capsule.
I would like to purchase a wireless music player (Squeezebox or similar, not Mac TV) that could directly access and play the music stored on my Time Capsule, without the need for Mac Book to be switched on. From the few wireless music players I have looked at, I get the impression (possibly false) that I would need the music player's client software installed on the Mac Book to serve the music to the player, which implies that the Mac Book needs to be switched on when the music player is in use (correct/false??)
Can any one please give me some advice here? Is my understanding correct? Is there a simple way to configure my wireless network to allow a music player to play files directly from the Time Capsule? Can you recommend a particular music player that would allow me to do this?

I would expect exactly what you are getting.

  • Slowness with Time Capsule

Ive had an Apple TV for about 1.5 years.  I have been using an Airport Extreme as my home router with Comcast High Speed interet, and they have worked great together.. The speed was flawless.. and neve had to wait more than 10 seconds to start playing a movie.
I just replaced my AE with a 2GB Time Capsule because my back up drive had broken.  Ever since my internet speed on Apple TV has gone to crap.  I use Itunes Radio alot, and now I can't get it to continuously stream.  I also use iTunes Match, and it constantly stops and starts while playing music.  As for movies, forget it... It takes forever to get it started, and when it does, it buffers every 3-5 minutes during the movie...
At first I thought it was because I was backing up all the time, so I turned off Auto-backup on my MacBook Pro.  No change..
Is the Time Capsule not as fast as an Airport Extreme?  I haven't changed anything on my ATV3... or my modem.  I leterally switched out the AE for the TC.. got my HD backed up.. and that's it..
Regular interent seems fine (on my computer and ipad).. but Apple TV gets stuck all the time..

    Hi ejs71,
The Airport Extreme and Time Capsule have the same Wi-Fi specifications, see the first link for more details. Also, take a look at the second article which has some great tips that may resolve the issue.
    Apple - Wi-Fi - Compare Wi-Fi base stations
    http://www.apple.com/compare-wifi-models/
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4546
Apple TV unexpectedly disconnects from the Wi-Fi network or signal strength is weak or fluctuates
Check for any obstructions and adjust the location of your router or Apple TV; also check for sources ofpotential interference.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For an AirPort Base Station, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi-Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
If after attempting the above steps, your Apple TV is still unable to connect to your Wi-Fi network:
Restart your Apple TV: Choose Settings > General > Restart.
If you can connect to the Internet using an Ethernet connection, verify that your Apple TV is using the latest software by choosing Settings > General > Software Update. If your Apple TV can be updated, install the update and test again.
    Good luck!

  • Dlink Wireless Range Extender with Time Capsule Setup

Looking to setup a D-Link DAP-1320 on my time capsule to extend my wifi network. The D-link instructions are pretty basic, only two choices. WPS Setup, which the Time capsule does not have. And Web browser setup by going to dlinkap.local which only times out and does not load.
    Any sugestions? thanks

Nope this cannot work.. Apple to Apple .. Dlink is banana.. Apples don't talk to bananas.
If the DAP-1320 has a WAP mode.. then plug it by ethernet into the TC and use like that. Not going to work any other way.

  • Setting up new HP Laserjet CP1525nw wirelessly with Time Capsule

Im having issues setting up my new HP Laser printer via wirelessly with Time Capsule. I have tried with the Wireless Client Setup
Assistant but cannot get it to work. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I tried to get the CP1525nw set up on my computer here at the office and found, much to my chagrin, that the CP1525 is not supported under 10.7 and retroactively not supported under 10.6. The way that I have found to get around the issue is to connect it wirelessly via a static IP address and use a generic postscript driver. I'm hoping that they will release a driver to Apple soon, but until then, generic is the only way to go and I have not found any print quality issues.

  • How to Sync iPhone/iPad with Time Capsule (wirelessly)

Hi - I am wondering if there is way to sync my iPhone or iDevices with Time Capsule wirelessly.  Please let me know if there is and how?
    Thanks in advance..

The iOS devices....iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc.....sync to iTunes on your computer or to iCloud.
    See this Apple support document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
It is not possible to sync iOS devices directly to the Time Capsule.

  • How can i extend a wireless network with time capsule

How can i extend an existing wifi verizon wireless network with time capsule? the router is connected on the bottom floor. want to boost the signal to a home office on the top floor, four flights up. connect time capsule via ethernet cable to iMac on 4th floor? Do I have to start a second wifi network or can I set it to just boost the one I have? thank you

How can i extend an existing wifi verizon wireless network with time capsule?
It all depends on what you mean by "extend".
If you plan to "extend" by connecting the Time Capsule to the Verizon router using a wired Ethernet cable, this can be accomplished.
If you were hoping to connect the Time Capsule to the Verizon router using wireless only, unfortunately the Time Capsule and Verizon products are not compatible for that purpose.
Check with Verizon to see if they offer an "extender" or "repeater" that could be located very close to the Time Capsule.
This would provide both more wireless coverage and also allow you to connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable from the "extender" or "repeater".
