Wireless slowed to a crawl

Hiya there
A few days ago (around midnight) by BT Home Hub restarted a few times, I though nothing of it I was watching a movie at the time and i just assumed it was an update to the firmware.
The next morning I turned on my computer (which is connected via cable) and all was fine and thought no more of the issue, later though my daughter came down saying her wireless connection was not working.  I have taken a look at it the signal is all green bars but the connection keeps going on and off and when on is painfully slow I though perhaps i had better investigate so i turned on my Play station (also wireless connected) and got the same problem, On-line gaming is a no no simply connecting at such a slow painful speed that it isn't worth it, it cant even get on-line half the time.
Has anyone any ideas what the issue might be ?
Andy

Hi ZooBurner,
Thanks for posting. Have you tried changing the wireless channel? I suspect it might have changed when the hub reset so you might need to "tune it in" so to speak. Have a look at this link

Let me know how you get on.

  • E4200v2 has slowed to a crawl

    Folks - help!
Have the E4200v2 router.  Suddenly my wireless devices have slowed to a crawl.  I mean slow.  My Cisco Connect confirms that my wired download speed is 30-32 GB, but my two Android devices have slowed to ~500k.  I might have changed something - just don't know.  I know I'm desperate though.
I do have the latest firmware (2.0.37).  HELP!  How do I maximize speed form this thing?
    Thanks so much in advance!

make sure 5ghz setting is different from 2.4 ghz .. Firmware should be updated . change channel to 9,6,3,1
I believe that I can make it

  • Why does Back to My Mac slow to a crawl under heavy GPU usage?

I run Back to My Mac so that I can access my Mac Mini sitting at home from wherever I am on the road using my Macbook Pro.
I noticed that even with next to nil CPU usage, Back to My Mac runs normally when I have nothing else running, but slows to a crawl when I have GPU-intensive applications such as BOINC or Asteroid running.
What's even more weird is that screen updates seem to be timely and I can see what's happening on the computer in real-time right away.  What becomes completely unresponsive are mouse clicks and keyboard presses, which I would think use a very miniscule amount of bandwidth and CPU.  Most of the heavy lifting for a remote screen sharing session is actually transferring what's showing on the screen over the Internet, right?
Does anyone know if this is a reported bug and if there's an upcoming fix for this?
The Mac Mini I'm using is a Late 2009 with 8GB RAM and an SSD inside.
The MacBook Pro I'm using is a Late 2011 with 16GB RAM and an upgraded hybrid hard drive.
Both are running the latest version of Mavericks with all system updates installed.

Here is how I fixed it, sort of.  I configured the Time Capsule (TC) in Bridge Mode behind the AT&T Gateway. Connected the TC to Gateway with ethernet cable.  Port 3 of Gateway to WAN port on TC (the one with the circle above it). My desktop iMac is wired to a port on the TC.  If the iMac is asleep, it will not be visible to a laptop (in the laptop sidebar) on the WAN side of the Gateway or one using the Gateway wireless network.
I set the iMac, using Energy Saver, so that the CPU never goes to sleep.  Unless I force the iMac into sleep mode, it is now visible to a laptop on the WAN side of the Gateway and using the Gateway wireless network. "Wake for network access" has always been checked. Everything seems to work now with Back to my Mac as advertised.

  • Wireless Slow After Lion

Why did my wireless slow down after Lion.  I have a time capsule with airport express.  After Lion it slowed about 85% on my 13 inch macbook pro.

I have the same issue. From the moment I installed Lion my internetconnection has slowed to a crawl. It affects my (upgraded to Lion)iMac, and my MacBookPro - which is still on Snow Leopard. Both areconnect to a wireless Thompson modem. No problems at all untilupgrading to Lion.
I've tried resetting the modem to factory defaults, and I've tried all 13 modem channels - no joy. It's still crawling.
I'mspitting mad about this becasue it's completely affecting my business, which is mainly done over the internet. Plus my kids are complainingconstantly about no YouTube. In fact anything video/image based is soslow it reminds me of dial up!
Don't get me wrong - I love everything else aboutLion. But slow internet is a massive no no for me. If I don't find asolution in the next few days I'm going back to Snow Leopard.

  • Why has my native windows 7 Pro-64 network to a windows 7 Pro-64 VM has slowed to a crawl and freezes, after the new Arris cable modem was installed?

Please appreciate the details, so the complete situation can be visualized:
    The office network:
New Mac Mini PC running Win 7Pro 64, (in boot camp), networked to an iMac running the same Win 7 Pro 64, VM, UNDER Fusion 7Pro.
To review: My treatment rooms former dell PC/running vista business/ running the server and network versions of my Dental practice mgmt & X-ray capture apps, had no probs WLAN to the front desk iMac running the same PC client dental network apps under the same vista business, & Fusion 4. The dell slowly fried its power supply .
I could not wait to replace it with a Mac mini/ boot camp/ win7 pro 64 bit, as it has to run natively to capture X-rays. The front desk iMac was also upgraded to os10.10.3/ Fusion 7pro/ and its own matching Win7 pro 64bit. The iMac is wired and WLAN connected to a netgear d600 router and a Time Warner Cable  modem. The modem then failed and was replaced by an arris modem. As the Arris was configured out of the box, the network ran much slower slowed, as compared to the original modem. BUT-  The Vonage 2 line phone system stopped working- no incoming or outgoing voices could be heard after it rang. Then twc remote configured it and the phone now works, but the network iMac slowed to a crawl, and now freezes when accessing the Mac Mini PC dental server to edit or enter data. The Mini perfectly accesses the internet via wifi. It accesses the front desk canon  printer by wifi, and can print share they the iMac that is wired to the printer, as well, BUT, the network connection is a spinning pinwheel. The front desk imac easily finds the Mac Mini PC server on the network. It connects easily by entering the servers IPv4 address SHOULD THAT last value change.  But if data isn't entered in slow motion, the window and app freezes, and has to be force quit by Task Manager!
    Cause:
    1. I think TWC switched the cable modem from the default- Non Bridged, to Bridged mode. Could this be the cause?
    2. The network setting in fusion, on the iMac is auto detect, a setting that always worked with vista and with the new Win7 system, before TWC installed the new arris modem. 3. Switching to NAT does not work at all is there a different setting to use?
    3. Does the Netgear Router  have to have a port or pref configured so as not to block the  Server.
    4. might in need an Access Point (I have an extra netgear wdr3400) ).
    5. Do I need an Extender that plugs into the AC LINE?
    I hope this info helps.
    PS:(some addtl info:
    1. File sharing works fine between the minis -Mac and boot camp sides and between the iMacs- Mac and VM sides and between eother side to or from either of the 2 computers! 2. Also  either office computer and all of my my home macs , (& my iPad, & iPhone), can access each other instantly and flawlessly, with splash top streamer and jump desktop remote apps, as controller or as client!  In fact, the front desk iMac can remote control the mini PC AS IF YOU WERE DIRECTLY ENTERING INFO I TO IT!
SO I think it's either a misconfiguration in the TWC cable modem  &/or some additional pref to config in the router? Thanks so much for your help, (been using VM's since VPC1. & Win95 in a iMac, 1999, DV MODEL! (TWC BLAMES VONAGE FOR NOT OPENING SOME PORTS IN THE TELE MODEM. Vonage blames TWC FOR NOTopeningj ITS PORTS IN THE CABLE MODEM, when they meant the ports on the Netgear.  They have passed the buck for 6 weeks with not even a guess at what to do. VERY FRUSTRATING!  Again, thanks to all!

    Okay Saint Steven, I'll bite:
I read your description multiple times, very carefully, and I am still confused. May I suggest the following:
    * Follow basic troubleshooting procedures. Isolate each individual problem. Don't try to get everything working at once. Make one change at a time.
    * If I read your description correctly, the Netgear D600 (??) Router is the office LAN (not WLAN). Connect each piece on the LAN separately one-by-one, and test each piece individually. Get your LAN and its devices working first. Forget about the Vonage and the Arris Cable modem.
    * Next, look at your Internet connection. Again, try each piece separately. Depending on how the original cable modem and the new Arris cable modem are configured, you may also have to adjust the configuration of the Netgear D600 Router.
    * Finally, if you are still having problems, try to organize your thoughts and presentation before you post again. List each element in your network. List how each element is configured. Be systematic.
"Arris cable modem" does not help much - some are simple bridges, others are routers, etc.
    To answer your questions:
    1. I can't tell from your confusing description, but I don't think so. It seems like the problems are associated with the system changes you made (replacing Dell, etc.) and the problems seem to be isolated to the local LAN.
    2. Auto detect should work, but it is easy to change and test, as long as you change one thing at a time.
    3. No. The Netgear router should allow all communications on the local LAN. Could you have put the "server" in the DMZ?
Note: I could not find a Netgear "D600" model in a web search. Do you mean N600?
    4. No. I doubt that you need an additional access point. Based on your description, everything appears to connect to the LAN.
    5. No. See 4.
    To repeat myself:
    * Do careful, systematic troubleshooting.
    * Provide carefully written, detailed description of your network and system configurations when you ask for help.
    Good luck!

  • How can an external drive cause my Internet to slow to a crawl and then fail?

I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 new drives. One I'm using for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I have been trying to use them with my new MacBook Pro retina 13-inch.
For the last few days I've had weird problems trying to connect them via a USB 3 hub. I though the hub was the problem (because things seemed to be fine until I introduced a hub into the equation) and already returned one.
But now I see the same thing happening even without the hub.
It appears that one drive, when connected to a USB 3 port (it doesn't matter which port), even when it's doing nothing (I erased and and removed the CCC task), causes the Internet to slow to a crawl, and then stop. All connectivity ceases.
The instant I unmount and remove the drive the Internet springs back to normal speeds - over wifi about 110 Mbps.
Disk Utility says there are no problems with the disk. So does WD's only diagnostic utility. And the firmware is up-to-date.
The other disk, running Time Machine, seems to have no issues at all.
I guess I will return this drive. It could be subtly defective in some way. But what way? Why would an external USB 3 drive affect the Internet connectivity?
    doug

I came across this post while in search of the answer to the very same question only I am experiencing this problem when connecting to a USB 3.0 hub and nothing else.  The resuling slowdown in my internet speed leaves me hanging intermittently between screens in Safari, sometimes indefinitely.  When I remove the USB cable, normal speeds resume.  Activity Monitor shows no undue load on the CPU.  I did not notice this problem until just recently.  Could this have something to do with the recent OSX patch.
BTW: I am running a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on here?

  • MacBook Pro Slowed to a CRAWL after less then a week....

    Hello All,
I'm new to Mac. I just got a MacBook Pro last week.
Well, for some reason it has slowed to a crawl....
The dock show/hide and magnify isn't working either. Neither is the "active screen corners" feature on the dashboard. In addition to that, the system does not highlight menu items and show the submenus.
Also when starting applications they take forever to load.
It's acting like it has no ram even though it has 2 gigs and a 2.16 processor. The ram is showing up in the "About this MAC" screen though.
I've tried turning off all startup login items. Nothing is being loaded into memory. I've also tried running the disk utility.... still having the same problems.
I'm new to Mac so perhaps I'm missing something completely obvious.
What would you all suggest is going on, and what do I need to do to fix it?
    Thank you
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    James:
I suspect Wizard's problems resulted from too many widgets and possibly some not quite compatible software. Slowdown can result from lack of free physical RAM, so that Virtual Memory swap files on disk have to be frequently accessed. I don't think he mentioned how much RAM is installed. His symptoms go beyond mere slowdown, however, so I would suspect other software problems as well.
Cutting way back on widgets together with restarting can work wonders sometimes.
OS X handles file fragmentation pretty well, for file sizes up to about 20 MB. It's probably not necessary to run defrag on a Mac unless one wants to clean up a large space for video work. I don't have defrag software. I'd rather wipe the drive (maybe once a year) and reload from a backup drive. I do swear by DiskWarrior, however, and hope they release an Intel version soon. DW does a great job of correcting disk and file errors and optimizes the directory.
Apple has been packing a lot of changes into OS incremental upgrades. To interpret that as comparable to Windows Service Packs probably isn't very accurate. Yes, some bugs are fixed but there have been steady upgrades of core features. Security fixes are often included as well. But I've experienced no stability problems whatever.
Some users recommend using Combo updates instead of using Software Update. I've always used Software Update and have never had a problem. The important thing, either way, is to make certain the operating system and disk directory are 'clean' and trouble-free before and after the update.
I've never had to do an OS reinstall except once, when I was tinkering with System files and slipped up. Routine preventive maintenance works.

I migrated all my stuff from my old iMac everything working fine so I was a happy boy. However, about 4 weeks later my internet has slowed to a crawl. Slower than dial up it seems.
I did some speed tests over the network on 3 seperate devices and got the following
    iPad and iPhone
    Upload: 3Mb
    Download: 7Mb
    iMac
    Upload: 0.09Mb
    Download: 0.5Mb
As I mentioned, this was 100% fine before today, I have run no updates so far, as none available. I see lots of people on here have been having problems, but they have upgraded to M Lion from previous OS's. Mine was M Lion straight from the box.
It's not just Safari that's slow, it's the app store, Opera, Firefox and Spotify. Everything is very very very slow. I am connected to the network fine. I need help with this. Please help. I'm doing this from work as home iMac couldn't get here!!
Are you running any Anti-Virus/Security software or similar?

  • IPhoto slowed to a crawl - unusable - help!

    hi
I returned to use iPhoto for the first time in a couple of months - during which I've updated to 10.5.2 and the latest iPhoto updates - now it's slowed to a crawl to a point where it's unusable - simply scrolling brings up the beachball - nothing's changed besides these updates - last photos added were at christmas - used to work smoothly and slickly
the library holds 7200 images - there's 30GB free on my 120GB hard drive
what I did so far was trash the prefs - empty caches - then rebuild the library checking all the option boxes
trashing the prefs and caches seems to help for a moment - on restarting iPhoto is more responsive for a minute or two but then soon gets jammed up again
I'm on the road and can't reinstall until getting home in a couple of weeks - next step I guess
been using macs since 1994, iPhoto since it's release - this has me stumped - anyone got any ideas?

Are you sharing between two or more Macs? If so try turning sharing off - some folks have found that helps a lot
Do you have Web Galleries that allow photos to be uploaded? It appears to me that that can slow things down while iPhoto syncs with the web galleries
You do not have a large library (I have about 22,000 photos and Old Toad has even more) and you have adequate free disk space
check turning sharing off if it is on and galleries syncing (you can see the little wheels spinning to the right of the web gallery name in the source pane) and see if there is anything else you think might contribute to the issue

  • HT1222 My internet speed has slowed to a crawl after installing security update 2015-003.  Any ideas on how to fix?

I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS. I recently installed security update 2015-003 and now my internet connectivity have slowed to a crawl. sometimes if I turn wi-fi off and then back on the speed returns to normal but sometimes it does not.   Any ideas what may be causing the slow internet speed?

Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results.

  • File copying has slowed to a crawl.

When I try to copy from my home directory to an external hard drive, (about 600mb of data in this instance), it starts to copy in the normal way, saying about a minute remaining, then suddenly stops...
... and waits, while "time remaining" increases.
A short while ago it got as far as saying 40 minutes!! For 600mb!!
I tried to launch my browser while this was happening & it was having none of it.
I tried to launch the "force quit applications" window. Again nothing.
Then I stopped it copying & the other things opened.
It's as if "copying" suddenly asks for more power than the computer can supply & everything else takes a back seat. The copying begins, but at an absolute snail's pace.
If I left if for 40 minutes it would probably copy successfully, but why so slow?
I have about 30GB of data I need to remove from my hard drive before I can do a clean install, but at this speed I don't think I'm going to live long enough!
I've run permissions checks & repairs on all drives concerned. I've run TechTools Pro diagnostics on everything & it's checking out fine.
So what could be the problem?

My problem turned out to be much more extensive than I'd originally realised.
My laptop had a faulty hard drive that needed replacing & the external hard drive seems to have developed a fault whereby it works fine for a while & then slows to a crawl, taking the machine with it. (ie Everything "finder" related seems to slow to a crawl.)
The external hard drive seems to behave itself if it's the only thing on the firewire chain.
Alternatively, if I have the dodgy drive on its own on the Firewire 400 socket & my other external hard drives chained off the Firewire 800 socket the dodgy drive behaves itself.
As soon as I try to copy from one external to the dodgy one it starts to play up, but as long as I just read data from it it's fine.
So I'll get the data off it & stop using it.
I hope your problems are not as extensive.

  • Processing time has slowed to a crawl since install of ViewSonic monitor.

All processing functions have slowed to a crawl since I installed a ViewSonic monitor VX2270Smh-LED.  The system recognized the monitor immediately.  It is connected through the Mini-DVI port on the MacBook Pro and through an adapter to the DVI port on the monitor.  I have the displays configured as one very wide monitor so I can move windows back and forth.  It doesn't seem to matter what I am working on, browser, spreadsheet, email, every command results in the spinning wheel.
Have looked for a driver for the ViewSonic but they don't make them.  Is there something available with Apple that will help this?

To isolate whether the monitor is really the culprit I would run a benchmark without the monitor connected and with.
You should rely on the numbers from the benchmark to tell whether there is a difference.  Perception can be a very dicey thing.
    I have used xbench:
