Wireless speed faster than direct hookup E4200

Have high speed cable and find that the wireless speeds using Speedtest.net are faster than when hooking directly into the E4200.  Do I have something set incorrectly?

Have you tried checking the cables or the specs of your LAN card?
You see, the e4200 router is a gigabit router.  This means, your LAN card must also be a gigabit adapter to have a better wired connection.

Playback speed in Sample Editor window many, many times faster than track (at correct speed) in arrange area. How do I sync Sample Editor playback speed to correct speed/tempo in arrange area? Track is spoken word. Sample Editor playback sounds like Alvin on a meth binge. Spoken phrase is generated from Textspeech. Textspeech can export files as WAV files or MP3 files. Perhaps a clue?:   When exported Textspeech WAV file is dragged and dropped into track in arrange area of new project, it exhibits same supersonic speed. When Textspeech file is exported as MP3 file and dragged and dropped in arrange area track, it plays at correct speed.

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • Re:  Is ethernet cable to AEBS (b/g) faster than wireless connection?

Just wondering if an ethernet cable from my AEBS (b/g) to my older iMac G5 (2.0 GHz) is faster than having it connected wirelessly?

What ethernet would I likely have? Fast ethernet?
Your AEBS comes with a combination 10/100 Mbps "fast" Ethernet switch built-in.
When would one encounter a gigabit ethernet?
The newer 802.11n (2nd generation) AEBSn and Time Capsule have Gigabit Ethernet capability. To take advantage of this technology all devices would need to be Gigabit Ethernet enabled.
The short of it is that if my AEBS is b/g, the max would be 54 mbps and a fast ethernet would almost double this. yes?
    Correct.

  • How can I get tracks to play faster than normal speed in itunes?

I have lectures, audio books, and other recordings that I would like to play at faster than normal speed (like 1.5X or 2X normal speed).   I've set all of these recordings as audio books because I read that they have the option to play faster, but, I can't find how to actually make them play faster.  I also read that it's possible to open them in quicktime, but that is very much less than ideal and a waste of time.  Surely there is a way to do this in itunes, but I can't figure it out.
    Thanks for any help.

I will show you how I played my audio or mp3 files at any particular speed. This method will allow you to simply enter in your desired speed.(ex. 1.5 or 1.33)
In my case Im using an audio book [Lord of the flies] I download off youtube as a MP3 file using this program:
    http://download.cnet.com/MediaHuman-YouTube-to-MP3-Converter/3000-2140_4-7544580 3.html
First off,  you will need to make sure your audio file is open in QuickTime player rather then iTunes. First you need to locate the audio file. If your audio file is in itunes then right click the file and select "Show in Finder"
The file should open in a finder window, highlighted. Right click the file, go to "Open With.." And click Quicktime Player. (If quickTime Player is not an option, you need to go to "Other..." and select QuickTime Player from your Applications folder)
Now that your mp3 file is open in a QuickTime window you may proceed to step 1.
    1) Open Finder
    2) Click Applications
    3) Click Utilities
    4) Open AppleScript Editor
    5) In the program copy and paste the script below.
    6) Click "Compile"
    7) Now to test this script, click "Run" A window should pop up prompting you to enter your desired speed (default is 1.5)
    8) press "OK" and quick time should start playing your audio at the speed you entered in.
    9) If you would like to use this script again, go to File > Save... >Name your AppleScript and save it Anywhere (I saved mine in the Music Folder for easy access)
    tell application "iTunes"
    pause
set myTrack to location of current track
    # the player’s position within the currently playing track in seconds
    set mySeconds to player position
    end tell
    # show a Dialog
    set SpeedFactor to 1.5
display dialog "Enter speed factor:" default answer SpeedFactor
set SpeedFactor to text returned of the result
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
    activate
    # pause all previously opened documents
    set open_docs to documents
    repeat with doc in open_docs
    pause doc
    end repeat
    # open the track just played in iTunes
    open myTrack
    # get the 'QuickTime' document, MyTrack should be equivalent but it isn't
    set MyMovie to first document
    # rewind by 10 seconds
    if mySeconds > 10 then
set mySeconds to mySeconds - 10
    end if
    # set current time
set current time of MyMovie to mySeconds
    # set Speed Factor and start playing
set rate of MyMovie to SpeedFactor
    end tell

  • Slow wireless speeds on Mac Pro, but only downloads???

I have an "early 2009" quad-core Mac Pro. I also have a Macbook Pro that's a couple of years old. I'm running speedtest.net, with the laptop sitting on top of the Pro. My wireless setup is a several-year-old Airport Extreme base station hard-wired to the Verizon router.
My FiOS speed is 25/15, and that is generally what the laptop gets. When I first started this saga, the Mac Pro was getting about 4/12 on wireless (it is just as fast as the laptop if I hard-wire it). The laptop is also able to see about twice as many wireless networks as the Pro.
I have had the Pro in to the Genius Bar 3 times over the last couple of weeks. I give them credit for trying really hard; they say it actually has better wireless speeds in their store than one of their own Mac Pros, so they are chasing a problem they can't reproduce. The main thing they have done so far is replace the Airport card, which improved my results to about 9/17, but here we seem to be stuck. At this point the store has done everything they can think of, and all they can offer is to give me the names of some Apple certified techs who can come out to my home office (for a fee, of course) and try to trouble-shoot it here.
What I find most perplexing about this is that it's only download speed. I would think if there was some sort of interference, which is what they are thinking, it would affect both. And it would affect the laptop too.
I have a brand-new Airport base station that I will try setting up, but I don't have high hopes. I can also try upgrading to Snow Leopard, but that is a big time sink that I'm not quite ready for yet (I like to do a full install when I upgrade).
Does anyone have any other suggestions or tips on where else to research this?
    Thanks in advance!

I saw this at a site where they were using DFS with Server 2003. When the few Mac's they had connected to the actual server and uploaded the file it was okay. But when it was sending the file via the \\DFS_node\share_name the Mac took heaps longer for the same file. Watching the Activity Monitor > Network monitor you could see gaps with the data transfer, as if there was some pausing between packets. A pcap showed that there was constant DNS requests coming from the Mac, even after the connection to the share was made. The same wasn't happening when the connection via SMB was directly to the actual file server. As there was only a few Mac on site they left it with the direct connection but were getting an MS specialist in to look at it. Never heard what happened with that one but you may want to try monitoring the packet transfer to see if the data movement is contstant or breaking. I'd also recommend getting Wireshark to monitor the transfer. You can compare upload to download and maybe even the transfer from the Mac to an MS workgroup share.

  • Very slow network performance - with uploads faster than downloads

I just got new ISP - 100 mbps through a Cat5 line. It checks out when I run ethernet directly to a computer. However, I want a totally wireless network.
I have a Time Capsule attached by ethernet and that is my main network device. I also have two airport Xpress' to extend the network.
I am getting, on average, 16 mbps! And, upload speed is generally higher.
The Time Capsule is about 2 yrs old, but it is an "n" device.
Anybody have any idea what the problem might be? I was considering getting a new extreme and using the Time Capsule as an extender instead of the expresses because, as I understand it, the express has one band only. Would that be better? Mainly, I want to get the speed up to what it should be.
Is there some way to trouble shoot the Time Capsule?
Others in my building with D Link or Linksys routers are getting over 80 mbps wirelessly, so I know it is possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to stay with Apple products, but if not possible I will get another brand of router.
    Thanks,
    Deanna

So, William, I got an Airport Extreme. Within 20 or so feet of it I am now getting 85 to 95 Mbps!
    Great!
However, in the far reaches of the house, signal is low and I have not been able to extent network with either the Time Capsule or an Airport Express. They just won't connect.
Based on the earlier numbers you gave me, you won't be able to establish a reliable connection "in the far reaches of the house", as it's too far away from the base router. You'll either have to (1) run Ethernet to that remote unit, (2) use PowerLine units as an Ethernet extender, or (3) put the remote unit closer to the base unit.
I reset the Time Capsule a couple of times. I noticed that both devices are automatically set to channel 157.
That's a 5 GHz channel. That band can give faster throughput, but the signal strength falls off faster than in the 2.4 GHz band.
The Extreme has 2 channels - 2 and 157. I do not have the option of changing the channel on either of the other devices.
That makes sense, if they're configured to extend an existing network. They must communicate on the same channel as the base station they're extending.

  • Why is my 2.4 GHz network 2.5X faster than my 5 GHz one?

When I got my dual band AEBS last year, i was thrilled to be able to take advantage of the 802.11n 5 GHz band. I'd read about folks getting ethernet thruput, and with my CAT5E connection, I can sustain around 9.5 MBps. That speed for wireless? I drooled uncontrollably.
I figured I'd get the old devices off the AEBS, so I set it up as 'N' only; the "G" band is serviced by my wireless FIOS router. I even went so far as create a 5 GHz SSID so I would be sure that I would connect to my new 5 GHz speed demon.
Well, after months and months of tinkering with my AEBS and throwing an AX into the mix, I've resigned myself to the fact that my 5 GHz network will always be maxed out at around 2 MBps, where my 2.4 GHz network's topping out at around 5 MBps, about 2.5X faster.
I must say, I'm disappointed. I've tried every channel in the 5 GHz band. Some - like channel 44 - give me 3 strength bars, which seems pretty good, since my AEBS is 2 rooms away. The 2.4 GHz band usually is 4 strength bars, so if I don't have separate band SSID's, my iMac will normally pick the 2.4 GHz band. But once in while, on channel 44, my iMac will pick 5 GHz. Of course, I know it immediately...stuttering video playback, iTunes taking forever to retrieve album info, copies between my iMac and ReadyNAS NV+ waiting an eternity even to start copying. I do the Opt-click on the Airport icon, and yes, I'm logged into my speedy 5 GHz network. Needless to say, I didn't leave 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands combined very long. I've assigned separate SSID's to each frequency, and always make sure that I'm on the fast 2.4 GHz band.
Now, I don't think I'm stupid, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why my 5 GHz band seems to be maxed out at around 2 MBps. At least it seems that way, since I've never seen anything sustainable over that (maybe a peak at 2.1 MBps). The 2.4 GHz band easily stays consistently around 4.8-5.0 MBps. This speed difference is very noticeable, and can easily be seen from my iStat Menu's Network display.
I've even tried extending the 5 GHz band with my AE, and although the Transmit Rate gets to around 200-300, the real life speed is still slow as molasses. So I gave up on extending the network, and just use the AX for AirTunes.
Here's a look at my 2.4 GHz stats:
Notice that there's also a DigitalBirdie (5 GHz) network. That one's 3 strength bars, not too bad. Now for the stats on that one:
The Transmit Rate is low at 41, half the 2.4 GHz band. But I've had Transmit Rates in the 200's and it's not made much difference in thruput, if any.
Changing to the 5 GHz channel always leads to thruput slowdowns, but some are far worse than others (like file copies taking many seconds to start). But at their best, they never get better than around 2 MBps, even if the signal is fairly strong. I'm thinking I must have some configuration problem somewhere, but I can't figure it out. I've been banging my head trying all possible combinations to see if I can get over this 2 MBps hump, but I can't do it. I'm stumped.
Does anyone have an idea what else I can try? I'll do anything at this point, other than running 75 feet of CAT5E and ditching Airport
    Thanks.

    Hi Bob,
That's the strange thing. When I had both GHz channels working on one SSID, once in a while my iMAC would pick the 5 GHz channel (44 seems the best for me). I always use channel 1 for 2.4 GHz because I get the fastest speeds with it.
When the iMac would pick 5 GHz, the slowdown was very obvious. As I explained in my (long) first post, I immediately felt the difference. Now the $50K question - since the 5 GHz channel at that point was stronger than the 2.4 GHz one, why wasn't the speed faster? Why was it so slow compared to 2.4 GHz? That's what rattling my brain. If the 5 GHz signal's strong enough to get picked by my iMac, then why isn't there a commensurate speed increase? There must be something else going on here besides signal strength. If the 5 GHz spec says that I must have full strength to get 5 GHz speeds, then that makes sense. But I think it doesn't, that's why I believe I have a configuration problem somewhere, or a faulty AEBS.
I might add that my firmware's up-to-date in the AEBS and AX, and Airport Utility too.
I think heading to 4Runner's camp - even with high signal strength (and I would consider 3 of 4 bars high), the 5 GHz speeds aren't showing themselves.
    Here's some snap's of my AEBX's setup:
I think my configuration's fine, although I've tried so many different options, I'm a little confused, but I know that changing the Multicast Rate doesn't have any noticeable effect on the speed. I also have "Use Wide Channels" checked, but as I said, the 5 GHz band is awfully slow for using both channels. I have set "N" only, so no "G" clients to slow it down.
    Mind boggling!

  • SRP527W wireless speeds--repeat submission from Dec.

Bought the 527W in December, haven't been able to get a connection faster than 54Mbps even once.  Andy Hickman saw to it I had access to the 1.01.19 Firmware release which appears to have solved the random 'no connection to my WAN' issue which so many others had also noted (thanks, Andy!), but absolutely no help with wireless speeds.
Scenario details available (I'll spare you the detail repeats), but suffice it so say that, even with a new 300Mbps-rated device in the same room as the router, less than 6 ft away with line-of-sight between the 2 devices, best speed is 54Mbps.  Standard channel, wide channel, pick your frequency or advanced settings, I've been through the range.  And gotten nowhere.  If there's a trick to getting this thing working as the documents lay out, I haven't found it.
If others haven't had difficulties running in Multimode with 802.11b/g/n devices and it all works, then I'd guess I'm looking at a replacement.  And since I originally identified the problem shortly after starting it up in the first place, it'd be a Cisco warranty job, no?
    Any inputs/guidance/prayers gratefully accepted.

I have 3 PCs in the house:  2 tower units and 1 laptop.  The 'main' PC (mine) uses ethernet cabling to the router, and the 2nd PC and laptop both use wireless.  There are other devices as well, all cabled, but there are no issues with them.  The laptop's internal wireless adapter is limited to 54Mbps by design, where the 2nd PC's internal PCI wireless NIC is 'N' capable (Netgear model WG311T).  I know that it is functional at that speed and in it's present location because I was using it to connect to my previous router, a Netgear model, for over 3 years.  There were issues with DHCP and 'whois?' reporting with that router, so I replaced it.  I bought the Cisco because I wanted something a bit more advanced, to allow for service expansion to my home network in the future, as I progressed in my Cisco certification.  I hold CCENT now, I'm well progressed in my ICND2 studies, and I am the sole network admin in a classified UK miltary program (aspects of CCNP or above in the design I inherited.)  The Cisco router sits in the same location as the previous Netgear device did.
Since I have 1 device which cannot connect at 'N' speeds, I have to run in Mixed Mode.  But for troubleshooting I ignored that, and have attempted to force the 2nd PC to connect at 'N' speeds by limiting to only that connection type, but no joy.  I have made adjustments to thresholds, frequencies, etc., under the Advanced Settings for the wireless, and all with the same effect:  if I try to force 'N' settings to other than defaults, in Mixed Mode or 'N' only, nothing connects at all.
The PCI card was in an XP machine when I bought the Cisco router, but is now in a Win7 machine (replaced the PC for his 16th birthday.)  New OS, new drivers, same problem.  So, assuming there's some compatibility issue between the NIC and the router, I bought a new 300Mbps-capable USB wireless adapter.  For testing, I tried it with the laptop.  Sitting in the same room as the router with no obstacles but air between them, this new adapter can't connect any faster than 54Mbps either (but it sees other networks in my neighborhood than I knew were there to begin with, I must say!!)
So: 2 different adapters, 2 different OS versions, 3 different PCs in multiple locations around the house, and 1 constant--the router.  Any advice?  I'm going to reset the router to factory default today to see if that does any good, but I'm not confident.
    Thoughts?

  • New iMac faster than my MacPro?

I've recently purchased a new 24" iMac for a 2nd home I have out west. After a few days tinkering with it I'm pretty positive that this new machine is quicker than my 2 year old MacPro that I have at home. I was hoping after looking at the specs below if people could confirm that this should be the case.
The reason I'm wondering is that I even though the iMac is brand new, the Mac Pro was and still is far more expensive than the iMac. The main reason I would like to know for sure is that since I work from home and have fairly advanced needs (two VMWare Fusion vms running on top of OSX 60+ hours a week working with important financial software), if the iMac is indeed faster I may be looking for an upgrade. Before I essentially toss my $2700 MacPro to the side though I want to make sure the lag that I notice that I don't yet see on the iMac couldn't be simply cured with an OS reinstall, which hasn't been done in over 2 years.
I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors, as well as how important the 1067mhz vs the 667mhz ram is to my needs. I basically run two Fusion VMs with 1gb dedicated to each one in Unity, Safari, iTunes, Mail, Adium, and Skype occasionally.
    Specs for each machine..
    24" iMac - 2.93ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram 1067mhz, 600gb ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    MacPro w 30" Cinema - 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 5GB Ram 667mhz, 250GB ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    All advice greatly appreciated.

I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors
No Intel Mac has ever had a "Pentium" inside.
The Mac Pro would be faster for applications that are designed to use multiple processors. It has 4 cores versus 2 in the iMac.
VMware Fusion has a option (in the virtual machine's settings) to use more than one +virtual processor+, but it is not as efficient booting the OS directly. Also, it probable that things like the financial software you are running on the virtual machine is itself not designed to take advantage of multiple cores. Therefore, CPU clock speed becomes the overriding factor for performance in your case. Since the new iMac runs at 2.93 GHz versus 2.66 GHz for the Mac Pro, it is certainly possible that your iMac is faster than the Mac Pro, in your situation. If you were running Final Cut Studio or Logic Studio (or other app that takes advantage of all the cores), the Mac Pro would be faster.
Also, Snow Leopard has a new technology called Grand Central Dispatch
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/#grandcentral
which is supposed to make use of multiple cores more efficient under Mac OS X. I don't think it will have too much impact on existing third-party software, but it will be interesting to see what the developers at VMware and other third-parties software firms can do with it. So your Mac Pro with four cores may become more efficient (faster) under Snow Leopard.

  • Gigabit wire speed and wireless speed

I'd like to hardwire the gigabit ethernet ports on my Extreme to my TV and game console. Assuming the TV and game console support gigabit, will speeds on the gigabit wired network be inhibited by connecting older (802.11g) laptops to the 802.11n wireless network? I know that speeds are limited by the slowest device connected to the network, but don't know if that extends to wireless devices as well.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Ian

    Ian,
The whole thing is pretty much a moot point if you are connecting your network to the Internet. Even "g" wireless speeds are 54 Mbps. That's probably quite a bit faster than your Internet connection speed with your provider, correct?
The Internet connection is almost always a severe "choke" point on any home network. 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps connections won't matter much if the devices have an Internet connection, as is likely with your TV, Game Console, Computers, etc.

  • Edge faster than 3G!!!!

I bought my iphone so i could waste time when i was bored, going on facebook and the likes at work etc where theres a blocked wifi.
    However!
I find that 3g is unbearably slow for me, i mean slow. So slow that I stop bothering with it and actually start working again. a test on the speedtest.net app usually gets me an overall speed of 150Kbps with 3g, and about 7 kbps with Edge.
But whenever i try and use 3g for anything other than speedtest app, edge trumps it in all areas. When im using the edge network i get faster speeds buffering youtube videos (approx 15 secs for a 1 min video to buffer a bit then start playing) about 20 secs for a webpage to load, and faster loading of directions and maps images in the google maps app.
Does anyone have any idea what on earth is going on?!

    BennyboyOxtoby wrote:
true, but the point still remains that it should be faster when using 3g,
Not necessarily. If you're getting 3G speeds that are twice EDGE speeds, for example, but the YouTube stream for EDGE is 1/3 the bandwidth of the YouTube stream for 3G, then the download on EDGE would be faster. Just a hypothetical scenario.
Either way, though, the problem is most likely with the network and not with the phone. Download speeds are dependent on network traffic. During business hours in a downtown region, 3G speeds are significantly slower than during off-peak hours. Early on, I was getting 3G speeds slower than EDGE speeds too - AT&T (the US iPhone carrier) upgraded their 3G network in the Boston area, and now I get good speeds on 3G (as reported by SpeedTest, but also in actual use) - noticeably faster than on EDGE (the phone drops to EDGE in the middle of my building, since the EDGE frequencies have better structural penetration than the 3G frequencies).

  • New customer, v.low speeds. faster to connect to m...

    Hi all.
As mentioned we are new customers to BT.
We only have one telephone socket in the house (the master). Which is connected direct to the incoming phone line.
We don't have a house phone.
The HomeHub 4 is connected into the test socket.
The hubs downspeed is 2mb and i am receiving 1.8mb over wireless (i know wireless is slower than wired).
If i connect to my nextdoor neighbours BtFon i can get about 3.6. We are far away from the exchange but is there anything i can do? We are unable to use iPlayer at such bad speeds. We keep checking when BT infinity is going to arrive but for the past 4 months it just says end of June.... end of July.... end of August.... end of Sept etc.
Any help is very very much appreciated.

  • Infinity HH3 wireless performance - worse than HH1...

Back in May we signed up for the 6 month free Infinity trial.
Whilst wireless speeds in the room in which the hub is placed are OK (approx 30-35mbps), speeds throughout the rest of the house are much lower.
We have a TV with wireless connection on which we want to watch using iPlayer.  We have also tried the Wii and PS3.  iPlayer worked fine (on standard resolution - no chance on HD!) when we had the HH1, but with the HH3 we get buffering and interruptions even on low resolution.  Speedtest on a tablet next to the TV shows speeds of less than 1 up to about 8, yet even when the higher speeds are shown we still get occational buffering on low res.
The HH3 is in the same room that the HH1 used to be (albeit not identical positions due to cabling restrictions) - and unfortunately this is at the opposite end of the house to the living room and TV.
Is there anything that we can do to improve the wireless reception?  I'm thinking of channel settings or something to boost the signal.  I can't easily move the HH3 without having a lot of trailing wires, and am not willing to pay out for new devices.  I'm fairly technically competent, but am a novice in terms of WiFi.
We have a couple of months left on the free trial.  If we can't sort out something, then I think we'll be going back to the old service at a third of the price of Infinity.  At least we can then watch iPlayer again.
    Thanks.
