Wireless speed inside the house

I have E4200 router. My house has cable connection of 30mbps. That is the speed that data comes to my modem interface. Does the modem waits until it receives all the packets from outside until it starts passing it off to router or it passes it as it receives it.
Also i know that speed on my internal wireless network depends on the distance, interference, walls etc but does it also depends on how many devices at current moment are sharing wireless medium?
If someone can try to explain this or point me to some good reading about these kinds of details would be much appreciated.

Hi! Once the modem receives the data, it will automatically be transferred to the router. Here's an article that you can read for further details and information about wireless connection challenges: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=efc03a44a5bb47bd804cf4d0eb3015c8_Top_Causes_of_Int... Hope this will help you.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, switch channel from auto to maybe 6,channel width to 20mhz? Already changed security settings to WPA2.  Currently router is running in mixed b and g mode.

If you have one computer running on G they will all run on G. All ROUTERS are backward compatible, in otherwords if you have a group of computers and all of them are N compatible and one or two are G They will all work but the N computers will run at N and those that are G will run at G speed not N.
It can get confusing but really it is simple. The newest is 802.11 AC and ic used with the newest Mac Computers made available in November 2013. So if you have the newest Airport Extreme that is 802.11ac and the newest computers that are AC compliant your speed will be 5 times faster than anything on the market right now.

  • I dropped my iphone and when i picked it up it was working but as soon i got inside the house and turned it on, the screens lights up black then it goes completely white

he;lpp!! i dropped my iphone and face down on the screen andwhen i picked it up it was working and everything , when i got inside the house and checked it the screen goes black then it goes white and stays then shuts off and the same thing happens when you push the home button, plus im still able to recieve and get text messages i just cant see cause the screen.... help me like NOW !!!!!!!! haha i really dont wanna take it to a shop and pay money !!

You can try resetting it: Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). If you are able to see the Apple, then the reset is in progress, and the Home screen will display shortly.
If you are not able to see the Apple, then you are going to need to make a trip to the Apple Store.
    Cheers,

  • I have bought a TC to extend the range of the wireless network in the house and would like someone to explain the best way to do this? My combine router/modem is supplied by Movistar(in Spain) model Xavi 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports.

What is the best way to extend my wireless network in the house using a TC? I currently use a combined router/modem supplied by Movistar(live in Spain) model XAVI 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports. What is the best configuration and can you explain what is meant by bridging and which is best to bridge for signal strenght TC or Xavi modem/router? Have ipads, iphones, apple tv...etc and want a connection them all in the whole house which, not just downstairs, to our wireless network.

You cannot wireless bridge Apple to non-apple router.. so that is out.
The only way you can do this is run ethernet or EOP adapters.. and place the TC in a location where the other apple idevices can reach it.
If you want to repeat wireless with apple routers you have to use another apple router next to the modem.. plugged in an running as an AP.
Basically the TC is the wrong piece of equipment unless you want Time Machine backups.. take it back and buy a universal repeater.. not apple. Or buy more apple stuff like an extreme or express.. one apple router is useless to you without running ethernet.

  • IPhone 4s 5.0.1 problem - Signal full but 3G network keeps dissappearing inside the house and showing only 'o'.

I keep having the above problem that annoys me a lot. Although signal is showing at full bar but 3G network is almost always dissappearing inside my house, leaving me with an 'o' symbol. This doesn't happen with the iPhone 3G and my 4 y/o Nokia where the 3G symbol is always there. I've done all, restore firmware to 406, reset network settings, etc. But those don't seem to work.
Any ideas how this happen? Any suggestion is much appreaciated. Thanks.

So I am guesing probably the iPhone signal reception issue came from the iPhone SIM card reader itself not adjusting to the SIM chip.
OK, here is the trimmed micro SIM card comparison:
    Hope this helps!

  • Any Rogers Wireless customers in the house? Teathering and Bridge Browser

are you with Rogers and able to get your Bridge Browser working?
when I try to connect to isp.apn I get a message that I can not connect.  Is this something I need to call Rogers about?  I just assumed that teathering over bridge would be transparent to the carrier.  I guess not.
    8100, 8900, 9800, and Playbook owner

I use rogers wireless and believe what you are trying to do is setup internet tethering which is different then using the bridge browser.  from how I understand it the bridge browser will use the internet via your BES server which creates a secure connection and allows access to corporate web sites if allowed by your BES admin.
Internet tethering allows the apps on the playbook to access the internet using your blackberry data plan.  I have a BES data plan with rogers and this is how I use my playbook with my Torch.
However to get internet tethering to work you need to config a custom profile under
    options - internet tethering
you need to set the APN to internet.com
    username: wapuser
    password: wapuser1
You will now be able to tether your playbook and access the internet on the rogers wireless network.  make sure you have a decent data plan so you dont end up with a large data charge.

  • VERY slow wireless speeds since Infinity 2 upgrade

I don't know whether it is just coincidence or not but ever since BT upgraded my Infinity Unlimited to Infinity 2, the wireless speeds on my home network have been ridiculously slow. With a wired connection I get about 55-65 Mbps download and 10-15Mbps upload typically, while on wireless it's a fraction of that. For instance, the last test I did gave 3.33Mbps download and 0.13Mbps upload! I have tried different routers, tried changing the wireless channels, tried turning off other wireless equipment in the house, all to no avail. The strange thing is, the wireless signal strength is showing good to excellent. The speeds I obtained when Infinity was first installed were typically around 20Mbps download and 7-8Mbps upload.
I have contacted BT India and they said they were going to run some tests today, but I can't imagine how they are going to diagnose this problem remotely. Has anyone any ideas about what could be causing this and how I can go about finding a solution?
    Solved!

I am rather hoping that an engineer will be able to confirm whether or not the wireless signal is being degraded by interference and if so, what might be the cause and/or the general direction it is coming from. I have carried out all the tests I can do on my own, such as changing channels, routers, etc and turning off any other electronic devices in my home that emit radio signals, but nothing has made a jot of difference. All I know is that until a couple of months or so I had a great wireless signal, but now I do not. I can't find the cause without the help of an expert (i.e., BT engineer) coming to check what is going on. If BT are only interested in providing a good signal by ethernet cable, then they shouldn't be adverting on the TV how great their HH3 is at distributing a wireless signal around the home if it only works like that some of the time or for some people.

  • WRT600N slow wireless speeds

I have a WRT600N router.  I have one PC that is connected to the router via a wired connection.  I also have an iPad (3rd generation) that is connected to the router via a wireless connection. On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection.  However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds.  I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4).     I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices.  I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/).  Can anyone please advise me what to do?  The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong.  I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.

This suggestion did not work.  I tried to isolate the problem by optimizing the router's wireless settings. I used the 2.4GHz, set the radio band to standard 20Mhz then set the standard channel to 9. The laptop had the same slow wireless speeds as the iPad did.
This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

  • Frog in the house !!!

My wife, the gardener, is afraid of wildlife... outside, and even more so inside the house
I am the designated "Dragon Killer" when there is anything from the outside that makes it's way to the inside
Tonight, that was a tiny green frog hopping across our bedroom floor... and under the bed
After first threatening to go stay the night at a Hotel, she sent me on a frog hunt
So there we were... me, a bit slow to get down on the floor with a bad knee... against a frog about the size of my thumb
With my wife supplying "conniption fit" sound effects in the background
Using my metal Mag-Lite flashlight to track the progress of the frog from one side of the bed to the other, I lay in wait
It finally made it's way to the opposite side, and hopped behind the night stand
The frog seemed determined to continue in a straight line, right along the wall, so all I had to do was bide my time
A swift pounce of my left hand (holding flashlight in right hand) and I wrapped it up into captivity
I released the frog into the backyard pond from whence it came... while my wife wondered out loud how it got in the house
I had to point out that the locking security screen door on the back was designed to keep LARGE animals out, and our cats in, but a tiny green frog could easily fit through the 1/2" opening between metal door and door frame
She will, of course, continue to have the inside door open... which means I will, of course, be called into Dragon Killer duty again
At least it was a frog and not a snake... then she WOULD have gone to spend the night at a Hotel

Cats that a thing for frogs and lizards, along with birds and snakes too!
Our big tuxedo cat, Tommy, used to hunt anoles (some call them American Cameleons),
and would often come inside, yelling, with 2- 3 hanging off of his lips. Usually, he got them first, but sometimes, I think that he'd tackle a gang of the little buggers. He looked a bit like some of the youth of today, who hang all sorts of things from their lips. We'd just remove them, and turn them lose, much to Tommy's chagrin, as he wanted to punish the little beasts. Normally, he'd nail a few of them, the very next day - one at a time.

  • My wifi continually drops out - it is not a router problem as other laptops and smartphones in the house have no problem. How can i fix this???

Can anyone help with this....I purchased a macbook pro 13" in Sep 2011 and since purchase, have had continual problems with internet dropping out. I have other wireless products in the house eg laptops, smartphones, and ipods and these all operate without issue. Thw wifi on the macbook will work at start up for a few minutes then drop out, I then turn ot back on and after a few more minutes it will drop out again - hugely frustrating.

since purchase, have had continual problems
Why didn't you call Apple tech support?  You are still under warranty.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • 3g signal outside house, no signal inside - old house.

I'm in the Chicago area so obviously have coverage.  However, as soon as I get inside the house the signal is practically non-existant.  It switches between 3G with no bar, and 1x with one bar.  The house is old so there shouldn't be any high-tech insulation blocking the signal.  Anyone have any ideas?

But it could be interference from old wiring, What about others devices and being in your house

  • Problem with the wireless speed on windows with bootcamp

I've got a problem with the following:
the wireless card of my mac pro is very slow when i run windows on my mac pro with bootcamp
When i just run OSX everything works fine, but in windows, when I connect to the wireless my wireless speed
    drops to 11-18mbs.
First I thought that it was a drivers issue, but after the update of bootcamp drivers 1.4 the problem still exist.
First I had a Topcom wireless router now I've bought a Apple Airport Extreme, but the problem isn't solved yet...
The router isn't 2 meters away from my mac.
And the wireless speed is fine when i connect with my dads windows laptop...
Does anyone has a solution? using a cable isnt a solution for me because in September I will move with my mac pro one floor down.

You might want to ask this in the Boot Camp forums. As your wireless work fine under Mac OS X it sounds to be a software issue as opposed to a hardware one which means as Windows users they'll better be able to help.

I am trying to add a wireless printer to my MacBook Pro.  It was working properly until we had to get a new modem.  I have gone through the steps with the printer customer service rep, and it was working properly for one day.  When I booted up the next morning, the printer was no longer "connected".  It will work if I have the printer and computer connected, but I much prefer the wireless capability.  Suggestions? The printer is a Brother MFC7860DW.  The other laptop in the house (Dell) can print wirelessly so I don't think it's an issue with the modem or the printer.

Out of curiosity how much data per month are you using?  Another factor could be if neighbors have all done the same thing as you and the node is being overloaded on home internet use.
