Wireless Troubleshooting Questions

We have a Cisco 4400 WLC with about 70 Cisco AIR-1131AG-A-K9 access points.  The controller runs and the access points run 4.1.171.0 code.
We work in a hospital enviroment and nurses from one of our floors (3N) are complaining about poor/low signal when they enter a patient room with a mobile/nursing cart.  They say that the low signal strength really slows them/their medical applications (Meditech POM) and they are forced to move to a computer with an Ethernet connection to work.  They are then forced to basically communicate with the patient by yelling or move back in forth between the wired computer and the patient room.  The mobile/nursing carts are just specialized mobile workstations with a dell laptop and a battery backup.
The native Windows XP wireless management bit says that in one particular problem area we get about two bars and are connected at 11 mpbs.  I can set my dell laptop ontop of the mobile cart and while I more-or-less get the same signal strength my connection speed is faster.  We found that we were both connected to the same AP, but the slower device connected over the 802.11g and the faster device connected over 802.11a.
I also know that each 802.11a radio only had between 1-3 clients associated with them, while our 802.11g radios each had between 3-8 clients associated with them.  We do not allow 802.11b, so I am not sure how to explain the difference in speed.  My guess is that it is due to the number of clients associated with the 802.11a radio vs the 802.11g radio, or am I am totally off?
I think our biggest problem is the low signal strength in the patient rooms.  I unfortnately, did not document the RSSI in that room or even conduct any type of performance tests.  I think we spent too much time trying to blame the issue on some type of interference or rouge AP, but that didn't return anything.  We did have two of the three access points show that they failed the interference profile, but that seemed to have been transient.  What types of things should I do to determine if the signal strength is at fault or it is just the scape goat, futher more the only means of addressing the poort/low signal that I know of is by increasing the power level on the access points.  they are currently set to 1.  How much would you increase the signal to begin with?
I added a AP placement map.  I indicated the location from which we tested with a blue dot.  Please let me know if I need to add or clarify anything.  Thank you all for any assistance or suggestions you can offer.

  • HP Officejet 6310 all-in-one wireless option questions

I have a HP Officejet 6300 All-in-One printer and I was using it with my wire network connection. I just moved to a new home, which I rent, and I do not want to make new wholes to past the cables then this is my question:
"I have a Cisco Linksys AE1000 high performance wireless-N usb adpater (dual band)" and I saw this product Female USB A to Male Ethernet RJ45 Plug Adapter (on Amazon that I think will be great if I can use it). Can I connect them to make my printer wireless?"
    Please help.
    Thanks.
    BAK

Unfortunately that will not work for this printer. Wireless printing is set up through the printers software that you install on your computer. Since this printer is not a wireless printer, there will be no option to set it up wirelessly in the software, the only options will be ethernet or USB.

  • Wireless connection questions

Hi everyone, I'm considering going wireless soon, but I don't know a whole lot about it.
I have a few questions that maybe you could clear up for me.
First of all, it seems to me that the Airport Extreme Base Station isn't as fast as a lot of wireless routers I'm seeing sold these days. I've noticed some up to 108mbps, yet airport is only 54mbps.
    So what I'm wondering is,
    1) does the airport extreme card only work to connect to the airport base stations and not other wireless routers?
    2) If the airport extreme cards do work with other wireless routers, is it a good idea to go with a faster wireless router than an airport extreme base?
    3) What is the best wireless networking setup I should consider buying?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Merc

As mentioned the AEBS is 802.11G, just like many routers out there right now, so it is every bit as good as they are. The Airport card will connect to any 802.11G - or B - router out there, regardless of who makes it.
Keep in mind that those higher speeds that you see with a SuperG router are only going to be realized in your local network - that means between your computers - and not on the internet. Your typical broadband connection here in the States is about 4-6mbps, and even the slowest 802.11G connection is much faster than that at 54mbps.
Getting a faster router will only allow you to transfer files between computers faster. It will have no effect on your internet download speeds.

  • Hp 4580 wireless connection question

Can I connect this printer by usb To one pc, and ALSO connect it wirelessly to other computers on the wireless network in The house ?

There should be any issues with that kind of setup, I've had to do that in the past myself with a non-wireless PC.    If you have any other questions, please let me know which exact model of 4580 you have, seems there are at least three different varieties.
    Cheers,

  • Somewhat off topic, wedding lighting and wireless lav. question

Hello everyone! This question is slightly off topic, but I'm desperate for an answer. I've been doing wedding videos for some time now and it's time to upgrade my setup. I'm currently in the market for a good, reliable wireless lavaliere mic, and a good quality on camera light. I use a panasonic DVX100b for all of my footage. For the light I'd like to spend about $400.00 ish or less, but I will spend more if the price jump dramatically increases the performance. I also have about $600 to spend on a wireless lav. system, again I will pay more if the jump in price brings a considerable jump in quality. Can anyone make any recommendations?
    Thanks

Gotta go with the Sennheiser Evolution series as well. Although I can't say that the actual mics they ships with are the best, they're not bad and I've had very few issues with the range and reception.
And if you're shooting solo, aside from the mics, make sure you pick up a 2 or 3 foot XLR cable so that you have enough hose to allow you to hook the receiver on to your belt. Beats clipping it to the handle strap.
You can also get a little adapter for the DVX that will allow you to mount the mics on the camera hot shoe on the top of the handle. I'm sure you can get these for just about and wireless you buy.

  • Wireless speed question

Our laptop connects to the HH with its built in wireless , connection is solid and the speeds are good , BUT im getting a max of 42mb/s and wired i get 69-72.
I realise this is due to the limitations of the built in wireless. I realise 42 mb isnt a shabby speed but we do do a fair bit of downloading on the lappy so.......
If i get belkin 150mbps dongle (play have one on offer for a tenner) will i get the full fat 70 meg down i get with wired?
I realise that on paper this looks like a daft question as to me it looks like the answer is yes ha ha but im not sure about the limitations of wireless etc.

if you want (nearly) full speed, make sure the dongle is wireless N and MIMO compatible and rated up to 300mb speeds.it may be slightly more expensive, but worth it in the long term
    free your computer, use opensource

  • Cb54g Wireless NIC Questions

I've got a few questions about the CB54g Wireless Cardbus NIC:
    1) I frequently loose my wireless connection in Windows XP (Pro, SP1 and SP2beta) for no apparent reason.  I've transfered control over the connection to the software that comes on the CD and disabled the Wireless Zero service, and this seems to solve the problem, but as a side-effect it takes at least a minute from the time my I can first see my wallpaper on startup until I can actually do *anything* on my system (even open the Start Menu).  Is there another workaround for this problem?
    2) I'm also getting in to the FreeBSD scene, but I've yet to find any drivers for this NIC for that OS.  Does anyone know if there are/will be any drivers developed for this NIC on FreeBSD, or if there are any compatible drivers?

I have the exact same problem with my CB54G  . I also frequently loose my wireless connection. I have a fujitsu-siemens amilo m-6500 with windows XP and SP1. I dont understand what can be the problem...I also have the last update for the card drivers. If anyone in msi (or not) could help i would be very happy.
    Thankx for all anyway,
    Leba
ps: i'm using a vpn to connect and its the vpn that simply disconnects...

  • Initial Wireless Troubleshooting

    Hi Folks
How we start initial Troubleshooting Wireless related  issues,we have WCS/WLC 4400 along with LWAPP?
    thanks
    Ibrahim

do you want to troubleshoot connectin between WLC to AP (i.e. AP join problem) or
    client connectivity issue?
In general, you should use debug mac addr to limit the debug. Then, run debug capwap packet or debug client to troubleshoot AP join or client association problem.

  • Cisco Aironet 3502i and Virtual Wireless Controller- Question

    Hello everyone,
As soon, I purchased two Cisco 3502i and Cisco 1142 however, two issue are that I don't have controller and smartnet. As my purpose, it using for Home Use but house with 2,500 Sq ft with two floor and new 24x24ft garage with two floor. I put two Cisco 3502i for garage and one cisco 1142 in house on second floor. Separated for multi media, gaming, streaming high resolution video, parts, and downloads programmings online. It will run with Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports (4 POE) and two gigabit ports. In house, it have Dell Poweredge 2850, Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports POE and 2 ports gigabit.
I thought to make my own developing with my first time using Wireless Controller. I wanted to try out with Virtual WLC on Dell Poweredge 2850 running ESXi 4.1.
    Specs for Dell Poweredge 2850:
    - 2x Intel Xeon Dual Core 3.8 GHz
    - 4GB RAM (Will upgrade to 12GB soon)
    - 2x 146GB and 2x 36GB SCSI
    - 2x 1 Gbps built in and 4x 1 Gbps PCI-X
Developing with Untangle and pfSense to make it support with LADP and VLAN to both Cisco Express 500 using 4 gbps PCI-X. I have read the requipment list to use Virtual WLC but it seem met the requipment for my 2850. If someone offer me to get Virtual WLC and IOS from their, I accept to "borrow" it. I do go college which is Rochester Institute of Technology at New York and my major is Applied Computer Technology. I live here at Hampton Road, Virginia. Just in case if you might know about RIT. I just start to learning myself with Cisco books.
    I have a question:
    - Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
    - Is there possible to get Lightweight or Autonomous IOS for Cisco 1142 and 3502i?
    -  Does it supported Dell PowerEdge 2850?
    - Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
    Thanks

    I have a question:
    - Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
No.  You will need a SmartNet contract (or a freshly purchased device) to obtain software from cisco.  Nobody will provide this to you.

Cisco doesn't go in to great detail regarding the actual Hardware requirements of the vWLC (as far as ESX Host requirements).  Primarily, making sure you are running ESX 4.x/5.x is necessary.  The vWLC provisions 2Gb of RAM and 8GB of thick provisioned storage, so if your host can accomodate I don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
    - Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
Yes, with the latest versions of IOS 15.2(2)JB, full functionality in autonomous can be achieved on the 1550, 3500, and 3600 series APs

  • Wireless Deployment question

    Good Morning,
I am in need of some help. We are looking to deploy wireless to one of our retail locations. The site is currently under remodel so the time is now to put in a better solution.
We currently have Cisco Small Business AP541n deployed and we lose connectivity on our iDevices when they go into the kitchen area. The kitchen area is surrounded by refrigerators and we have stainless steel between the serving area and the kitchen. We ASLO have a Planar video wall (Cat 6 shielded is powering the video panels). Well this stuff seems to be causing interference but i dont have any numbers around that.
I dont have any tools to perform a WLAN survey prior to redeploying wireless. Well my question is:
The area is rougly 800 - 900 square feet and i was thinking of installing two 3602 clean air AP's to combat what i can only assume is heavy interference and noise. Would it cause issues with 2 AP's that close together?
Is this a recommended deployment or should I have a single AP with clean air trying to work best in that environment. Oh the environment is in a major (like the largest) metropolitan area in the world.

If your going to go with 3 you might want to look at going with four.  Only reason being if your using RRM the TPC Alogrithm uses the 3rd highest neighbor to set levels.  So a total of 4 AP's needed. Odd justification to put up yet another AP but figured I'd throw it out there for you to think about.
    Transmit Power Control Algorithm
The TPC algorithm, run at a fixed ten minute interval by default, is used by the RF Group Leader to determine the APs’ RF proximities and adjust each band’s transmit power level lower to limit excessive cell overlap and co-channel interference.
Note: The TPC algorithm is only responsible for turning power levels down. The increase of transmission power is a part of the Coverage Hole Detection and Correction algorithm’s function, which is explained in the subsequent section.
Each AP reports an RSSI-ordered list of all neighboring APs and, provided an AP has three or more neighboring APs (for TPC to work, you must have a minimum of 4 APs), the RF Group Leader will apply the TPC algorithm on a per-band, per-AP basis to adjust AP power transmit levels downward such that the third loudest neighbor AP will then be heard at a signal level of -70dBm (default value or what the configured value is) or lower and the TCP hysteresis condition is satisfied. Therefore, the TCP goes through these stages which decide if a transmit power change is necessary:
Determine if there is a third neighbor, and if that third neighbor is above the transmit power control threshold.
Determine the transmit power using this equation: Tx_Max for given AP + (Tx power control thresh – RSSI of 3rd highest neighbor above the threshold).
Compare the calculation from step two with the current Tx power level and verify if it exceeds the TPC hysteresis.
If Tx power needs to be turned down: TPC hysteresis of at least 6dBm must be met. OR
If Tx power needs to be increased: TPC hysteresis of 3dBm must be met.
An example of the logic used in the TPC algorithm can be found in the Transmit Power Control Algorithm Workflow Examplesection.

  • Wireless/ Wired Question

    Hey Guys,
I have a simple question, If my wireless is turned on, on the imac, does it bypass my wired connection?
The reason why i ask is.... I picked up a Western Digital Live media player, i also picked up a TP-Link usb wireless adapter so i can stream videos over wireless network. But the only way i can get it to work is to have the Mac's wireless on.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the site ..
This is my set up. I'am using a D-Link wireless router, i'am hardwired to to the imac. this is my preferred connection to the main computer Also Hardwired the Xbox 360. Im Using the wireless just for the Macbook,Iphone,Wife's Laptop, and now the TP-Link Usb Wireless adapter for the WD Live Media Player.
But as long as the wired connection will be the Default connection and the wireless will not "take over" and potentially slow my connection(makes for an un-happy wife... LOL). to me it does not matter because i always use my macbook. i would just like to know thats all....
    thanks again,
    Bill

  • Wireless Controllers Question

    Hello Guys -
I am fairly new to wireless and need some clarification on the different wireless controller options avilable from Cisco.
If I need to support 25 LWAPP AP's, then what specific controller series (4000 or 2000) should I go with?
4000 is much more expensive, but I haven't been able to spot too may differences between the two series.
I know 4000 is Gigabit Ethernet and 2000 is Fast Ethernet, 4000 offers redundant power supply, and 2000 does not. But other than this, are there any other big glaring diffferences between the two?
Also, from what I have read, you only need WCS when using multiple WLC's. But if I have only 1 WLC, then I wouldn't need WCS. Is that correct?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

If I need to support 25 LWAPP AP's, then what specific controller series (4000 or 2000) should I go with?
You have a number of choices:
    1.  WLC 2100;
    2.  WLC 4400;
    3.  WLC 5508;
    4.  3750G (standard PoE) with integrated WLC (25 and 50 AP); and
    5.  Cisco ISR with WLC network module
In my personal opinion, if you need to support up to 25 APs, you should be aiming for  the 50 AP support (for growth).  Which means that the 2100, 4402-50, the 3750G and the 5508 is a prime candidate.  (Note:  I'm not familiar with option #5 so I'm not going to get myself run-over by people who know more than I do.  )
Next question:  DO you need specific features like OfficeExtend and Wireless Plus?  These are a few specific functions that are specialized by the 5508 only.  If you don't need this then you have the 2100, 4402-50, and 3750G.
Next, as you mentioned earlier, the price of the 4402 doesn't persuade you.  So this narrows your choice down to either the 2100 and the 3750G.  I'm no big fan of the 2100 so I'll leave the decision up to you.
With only one WLC to contend with, you don't need WSC unless you want reporting and schedules.  One of the benefits of WSC in a SME is the function of shutting off the radios outside business hours.
    Hope this helps.

  • Simple wireless connection question-one laptop hookup

Can one get a "wireless modem" from a cable company and buy a laptop (mac)and connect wirelessly to this modem, without having to plug the modem directly into the laptop? I've heard of "networking" where the cable modem plugs directly into a desktop, then a laptop can find connection wirelessly, but what if there's ONE computer and you don't want it wired to modem, but want to move around the house. Sorry for dumb question, but I can't seem to think thru this! Thanks ahead for help!

What you mean is a wireless router. Very different from a wireless modem of which there are several (e.g. ethernet, USB and CardBus). Yes, you set up a wireless network via that modem/router. However, you situation is totally dependent on what your ISP provides/recommends. Check with your ISP. If they provide you with just a modem, you would pick up something like the AirPort Express to create a wireless network for your notebook to access wirelessly.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.
