  • Mac Compatible Wireless USB Dongle

Recently, I purchased a used iBook G4 (Mid 2005). The price was right, but the seller informed me that there was an issue with the Airport card. That issue being that the computer would kernel panic whenever airport was turned on.
I have been running the computer smoothly with airport turned off and a direct connection to the internet. However, the lack of portability is becoming frustrating, and rather than pay to have the computer serviced, or replace the card myself (Airport Card is not a DIY on the mid 2005 iBook like I initially thought), I decided to buy a USB dongle to connect to my wireless network.
However, after several frustrating searches, I have been unable to find a USB dongle that is Mac compatible. I imagine that many are compatible with OS X 10.4.11 even if it isn't explicitly mentioned, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a good USB dongle that I would be able to use with little to no problems.
Ooops! Should have marked this topic as a question. My apologies ...

http://www.macwireless.com/ may have a solution for you, but it won't be USB. You can attach an ethernet wireless router to the ethernet port of the machine and share a wireless network with another wireless router. I don't recommend using USB wireless dongles as they tend to be slower than you may want, and frequently they only have non-standard drivers, which can get very picky if the machine falls asleep.

    Hi,
The USB must not be plugged prior prompted to plug it by the installation.
Make sure to unplug the USB first.
Enter Devices and Printers and remove any existing instance of the printer and reboot the PC.
Launch the software installation once again or look for any option to Add a Device or REconfigure the Wireless Connection under All Programs > HP.
Only once the installation prompt you to connect the device, plug the USB abd the software should proceed.

  • Can not connect with wireless USB

    Hi,
I have installed a wireless USB dongle onto an iMac 333, system profile shows that the iMac can see the it, but the wireless software shows no device.
I tried it on a G4 iMac which found it and it all worked. Does anyone have any idea?

    CNet wireless-g usb dongle
have also tried a berklin usb dongle and had the same problem?
    Thanks

Wireless USB adapters are the worst way to get your iMac wireless capability. Many/most people find them extremely problematic and unreliable. They require drivers that must be installed. Those drivers often must match the exact version of Mac OS that you have installed.
It is much more reliable to get an Ethernet wireless adapter (like the Linksys WET11 or WET54G). These devices require no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet devices regardless of OS.

  • BT Wireless ac usb dongle 900 wifi protected setup...

Hi, I've just installed my new USB dongle for my hub5, the BT ac usb dongle 900.
After installing the software I plugged it in and clicked finish as instructed. I then connected to my hub5 by typing in the password as normal, and it's all connected fine.
But then a box popped up saying 'WiFi Protected Setup, In progress please wait'. If I cancel or leave it, it says 'error please try again' and then retries.
If I go and press my WPS button, it says 'success, connected to the router' and then when I click OK it still retries and pops up again!
I've tried rebooting and even uninstalling and reinstalling the software! What is going on this is rediculous! I've used loads of wifi dongles in the past, who even tests this software?
How can I stop it continually popping this box up?
    thanks for your time.
    Solved!

It could be a drivers problem.

  • Any ideas on a cheap 100% airport compatible wireless usb device?

I need to upgrade my wireless to n, and wish to do so with a USB wireless dongle. I tried using one but it was incompatible with airport and resultingly was slow and inefficient, not to mention i couldnt actually connect system wide to my LAN, and cant use ssh and ftp with my other computers D:. I also cant port forward my server :'( because my stupid adapter doesnt have a recognisable static IP . But it gets worse, because when i go online searching for an adapter, every one of them costs around £50 (~$90?) Does anyone know of a suitable good g/n wireless usb adapter that works with airport and doesnt cost a bomb? It really lets the OS down if i cant use the internet.

Please check out this wireless USB adapter offered by Other World Computing.

  • G4 Cube + USB Dongle - not connected to internet

    Hi all
    I'd like some help please...
    I've just inherited a G4 Cube
    PowerMac 5.1
    CPU Power PC G4(29) 450MhZ
    L2 Cache 1mb
    RAM 576mb
    Bus speed 100mHz
    No Airport card
I'd like to be able to use it online. Having done a little research I purchased a SparkLAN Wireless 802.11g USB Dongle and kept my fingers crossed. I've loaded the software from the supplied disc and entered all required information. The wireless utility displays the wireless router and tells me that I am connected - however when I launch a browser (I've tried Safari and IE 5.2) I just get the message that I'm not connected to the internet. I have tried connecting to the Router using it's IP address but get a similar result.
Would anyone have any clues as to why it only partly seems to work?

Download & install the freeware utility MacStumbler http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8035/macstumbler MacStumbler will detect wireless networks. It will at least verify that your USB dongle is working.
I don't think it's the cause of your problem, but recommend you update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

  • Wireless USB mice no longer work

First, I'm left-handed and use my mouse on the left side of my laptop, so let's dispose of that suggestion right off the bat.
When I got my MBP, I bought a nice Microsoft cordless mice, the kind that has a USB dongle that snaps in to the base. It worked great for a long time. At some point, one of my co-workers bent the dongle, damaging it slightly. Time passed, I didn't need the mouse very much, and it stopped working (yes, batteries were replaced). Didn't matter if I plugged it in to the left or right USB port.
I found an unopened Logitech USB cordless mouse and decided to give it a try. It also doesn't work.
I tend to doubt that both mice failed, I'm more inclined to think that my laptop is, for whatever reason, not seeing them. I know the USB ports are good as I plug in my iPod, Time Machine drive, and printer in to either of them.
Any suggestions for diagnosing this? Yes, my laptop has been rebooted. I'm running OS 10.6.6, but this problem probably goes back at least one or two versions down.
I just wish I could find a good BlueTooth mouse. I've tried the Apple mice and the Microsoft BT mouse that was "Mac Compatible" (it didn't work), and I just haven't found one that I like. I really like the feel of the MS USB wireless mice.
Oh, well! And thanks for any suggestions.

The Microsoft Mouse did not require a driver, OS-X recognized it right off the bat.
It's kind of moot, I bought a Magic Trackpad last week so I no longer need a mouse.  Thanks anyway.

  • Bluetooth USB Dongle stops working after reboot of 10.5.3

    Hi,
I have been using my Mac Pro 2.66 with a USB Bluetooth dongle "Sitecom CN-521" and Apple's wireless keyboard (white one) and Mighty Mouse wireless.
    All worked very fine together.
Then suddenly after rebooting 10.5.3, bluetooth is not available.
I first thought that the dongle was dead.
To find out, I tried the dongle on a PowerMac G4 733: it worked perfectly.
Then I thought it might be a hardware problem with the Mac Pro. To be sure, I installed the Vista drivers of the USB dongle on my Mac Pro (through VMware Fusion). It was recognized by Vista. I could even use my wireless keyboard in Vista, thanks to the dongle. But on 10.5.3, bluetooth was still dead and I could not use the keyboard.
It was a strange feeling to use my wireless keyboard on my Mac Pro, only in Vista and not in Leopard!!!!
So it is not a hardware problem (either dongle or Mac Pro). It is a software problem with 10.5.3.
I tried to reboot while unplugging all usb devices and then replugging them after startup is over: no improvement.
So basically, I think of 2 options:
    1. either it is a 10.5.3 software problem.
    2. either a clean install on my HD could clear this problem.
Does anyone of you has the same problem?
    Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance.

I answered this question on my own. I was able to utilize Pacifist and reinstalling the video card drivers and display profiles. Now everything works as it should.

  • Will any BT USB Dongle work?

BT n00b here. I'm finding a bunch of BT 2.0 USB dongle's out there, and have no idea whether any of them will work with my G5 tower and an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse.
Will any of these work -- or only certain brands and specs?

  • USB Dongle internet - brand new imac

When I try to use my usb internet dongle on my brand new imac it says I need java runtime which I can't just download beause it won't access the iternet.  When I try to install it from a download on another computer it doesn't work. Can someone please direct me to te correct java runtime link or tell me if there is another way Ic an get it to use my usb dongle to access the internet.
It is an optus dongle. Thanks!

If you're iMac is new it has wireless (Wi-Fi) connectiivy built in.
You could try gping to system preferences, network and then trying to see if you're Wi_fi is turned off.
You should not need to use a USB dongle unless the dongle is a 3G dongle for connecting to a phone provider e.g. Orange, O2, Vodaphone etc....  if it is then I suggest you look a the providers website to see if they have a help page for getting the dongle working with an iMac.

  • Setting up wireless usb adapter

I have now purchased 2 Wireless USB Adapters in an attempt to wireless enable my old imac. The first product called the Etec Mac Compatible Wireless 802.11G USB dongle would not work. After being sent a CD with Windows only software I was told by the supplier to go to Etec's website and download the mac driver. I tried installing the driver but there seems to be a problem with the ZD WLAN software and I get no drop down items in the menu to configure the adapter.
The supplier has now sent me a Zyxel G202 802.11g adapter and again - the disc with this product has no mac softare only windows. So I've found the Zyxel website and downloaded the mac driver only to find it is exactly the same driver I was told to use with the Etec product. I've uninstalled the Etec download and installed the Zyxel download but get exactly the same problem. The version I've downloaded is ZD1211MacPkginstall_4_5_7_0_OSX103
Does anyone know how to setup either the Etec of the Zyxel adapter for my imac which is OSX 10.3?
iMac Duo and iMac DVD SE   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Many thanks for your reply. I've just tried linking directly to the hub with an ethernet cable and that works fine. I don't know what security the hub has - not sure how to find out. The friend who lent me the netgear wireless ethernet bridge is a network consultant and could not get connected to the hub. We can connect to my neighbour's wireless network which is not a BT Homehub network so the problem lies with the BT Homehub but BT could not advise me.
I would prefer not to use a cable to connect as it is difficult to get this under the floor etc and the whole reason for getting the homehub was to create a wireless network. So I'm still searching for a wireless solution.

  • Recommend wireless receiver/dongle for 0s 9.1 on PPC7200

    Hi
I've been dusting off my 7200/120 running OS 9.1 and have installed a Dolphin USB 2.0 pci card and Targus powered hub. I'm wanting to connect the 7200 via wireless to my physical LAN in the other side of the house and have installed a NetComm Super-G Wireless Gateway NB600W. The NetComm works perfectly with a PBG4/OS X 10.4.10 running Airport.
The 7200's USB is working well and have a number of peripherals running OK including a Logitech LX5 cordless optical mouse (running Logitech's MouseWare software) and Iomega USB Zip drive etc and all work OK. Last thing I need is a wireless receiver either as USB dongle or some sort of device. I've tried a D-Link DWL-G122 dongle but struck out finding any OS 9 drivers.
    can anybody recommend anything? TIA

The DWL-G122 (there are a number of similar devices on the market) mentioned by Claudio Pompili connects to a USB port. This can be useful for computers without built-in wireless capabilities or without a PC Card slot. Since USB is not primarily intended for networking (and since the Mac drivers may be difficult to find), an Ethernet wireless bridge (sometimes called a gaming adapter) is often a better solution.

  • W701 Won't boot with USB dongle attached

W701 with current BIOS (6KET46WW v1.12) will hang if there is a USB dongle for a Microsoft Explorer Mouse USB dongle in the upper left USB (2.0) socket on boot. Works fine if you put the USB dongle in the lower USB/eSata socket. Note that the upper socket on this 2541-W1Z is NOT a USB 3.0 port (silver, not blue). Course I don't want to put it in that socket since I like to use that for eSata... Apparently the same problem exists in the W5XX laptops as well, but I don't see a post discussing the issue on the W701.

    Have you seen the thread

Yours may be a similar problem.
I'm about to get a W701 in a day or 2 and will be in the same situation. I'll check it out and report back when I can.

  • WUSB (wireless usb) devices

Can anybody suggest a source for WUSB (wireless USB) accessories? My X300 has WUSB support, but I haven't been able to find any hardware accessories  that work with it.
I did purchase a WUSB hub from Belkin only to find out it runs on a different frequency than the X300 internal WUSB antenna. So it worked only with the big belkin USB dongle. I thought the whole point of WUSB is that you just move within range of the WUSB hub and your USB devices all work over the air without the need for a dongle. Anybody have a setup like this?
    thanks!

I wouldn't rely on wireless USB for anything just now.
The only company making the chips shut down, and there is some debate about whether it is dead. The situation is murky. I'm not surprised you can't find much hardware!
