Wireless vs Ethernet Speeds

We've got 3 wireless access points. All three are Cisco Aironet 1240AG's. I know these are EOL as of two years ago, but we inherited them when we bought the warehouse we're in now (previous tenants went bankrupt and left a ton of equipment, infrastructure, and other crap behind). My bosses being thrifty, decided to use them (one of the bosses' siblings has his CCNA and took care of configuration, I only started here back in November.. after initial setup). We've been in this building for a little over a year. Now, it looks like these AP's should support up to 54Mbps, we're paying for 100Mbps from our ISP. I've done speed tests of every kind imaginable. Wireless in the main office, where I do most of my work, I get 10Mbps/Down 11Mbps/Up. Directly under any of the AP's I get 20Mbps/Down 11Mbps/Up. When I do a speed test directly wired in...

Assuming you verify your speed using "Thomas A Reed" suggestion, after that start looking at what may be interfering with your WiFi.
First what speeds are you getting from ethernet and what speeds are you getting from WiFi.
What make and model is your WiFi base station?
Are you using 802.11b (slowest), 802.11g, or 802.11n (fastest)
Do you have neighbors that have WiFi equipment using the same channel you are using. Get a utility such as iStumbler, AP Grapher, Airport Radar, etc... and see what channel you are using and what channel your neighbors are using.
What is the WiFi base station Multi-Cast rate set at?
What is the WiFi base station transmit power set at?
Does the WiFi base station have Interference robustness set?
NOTE: These are terms from my Airport Extreme base station, the terminology your vendor uses may be different.
If you place your Mac next to your base station do you get better performance?
You list your Mac as a Powerbook G4. The Titanium and Aluminum Powerbooks often times had problems with the antenna because of the metal enclosure, so being very close to the base station sometimes improves things.
There were also situations where the antenna wire that plugs into the Airport Extreme card inside the Powerbook (just under the keyboard if I remember correctly) would not always be seated correctly and that affected WiFi performance. But it also tended to limit the range of the Powerbook to just a few feet from the base station, so if you can roam around your house, this is unlikely an issue for you.

  • E3000 has slow Ethernet speed but ok wireless Internet speed

My Cisco E3000 has slowed it's Ethernet speed so slow that it times out when going to Facebook, YouTube or any site that is complex. It worked fine until one day it just gave up. It's connected to DSL Modem with Ethernet To a Apple Mac G5 power PC There are two other older macs connected via Ethernet, same problem. When I took the router out of the chain, and connected G5 directly to modem, normal internet speed. My firmware is up to date. Both wireless bands work great. When I look at Cisco Connect, everything looks normal. factory settings. I worked great then something changed. help me, my kids are revolting.

Yup, check the firewall settings. Since you said firmware is updated, then you may need to reset and reconfigure the router.

  • Wireless and Ethernet Network Do Not Work Other Than SpeedTest

I have been having major problems with my Mac's Internet.  Whenever I connect to my Wireless or Ethernet Connection, the signal start out strong and dies down to almost nothing (around .4 kbps) immediatly.  I have been having this problem for a couple of weeks now.  However, when I run SpeedTest.net, I get the connection speeds which I should be getting.  My Network Application thingy (iStat Menus) shows a major increase from .4kbps to 6MBps when the speedtest in running.  Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

It's a router all right. The next question is what is the "downstairs" device? Router or...?
The Aliant is configured through a browser interface and its IP address ought to be 192.168.2.1. Put those numbers in Safari's URL field and see if its webpage loads. If it does, you might be able to find a setting called "bridge mode".
Beware that I'm way out in the weeds with this suggestion - changing things in that unit may cause you even more problems. Since you said it is connected to a "wall Ethernet plug" I'm concluding that it should not be acting as a router, but that depends on what is upstream of that wall plug, and what functions the downstairs device is performing.
If the "wall Ethernet plug" is in fact a phone line and not an Ethernet LAN port then it is your router and you won't want to change that.

  • Time Capsule: wireless or ethernet?

I've got a Time Capsule on my desk, backing up from my MBP wirelessly. It occurred to me that although I like having one less wire, I could connect the two with an ethernet cable.
My question is: will there be an appreciable difference in speed? My MBP does slow not noticeably sometimes during Time Machine backups, so if an ethernet cable sped that up a lot, it might be worth it. Any advice?

There is nothing slower than wireless.
Ethernet would be a great improvement.

  • Sync times - wireless vs ethernet

I clocked sync times for moving a movie from iTunes on my computer to the Apple TV with three different connections:
    Airport Express 25:50
    Airport Extreme 12:56
    Ethernet 3:47
Wired Ethernet connection was 7x faster than Airport Express & 3.4x faster than Airport Extreme.

but the port on the AppleTV is not a GigE port so that should mean that it can only do 100base Ethernet speed at best... weakest link and all that...

  • Not getting full Gigabit Ethernet Speed on iMac Core Duo

I am using Airport to connect to a Linksys Wireless Access Point connected to my DSL modem. I am using ethernet to connect to a 3Com OfficeConnect 8-port Gigabit switch. I have 2x 500 GB LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini's (with Gigabit interface) connected to the switch.
The lights on the switch tell me that the drives and iMac are connected at full speed, however I can transfer a 650MB .dmg file to a firewire 400 drive in 1/4 of the time it takes to transfer the same file to one of the gigabit ethernet drives.
    running ifocnfig en0 returns:

I have no idea what that all means, but i do know that I am not getting gigabit ethernet speed.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

If you are transferring data via wireless then you cannot approach Gigabit Ethernet speed. 802.11g has a maximum transfer speed of 54 Mbps while 802.11n is about 130 Mbps. This is much slower than a FW400 port. Your router and switch must both be Gigabit capable and your drive must be connected to Ethernet to even hope to achieve Gigabit speeds - no wireless.

  • Ethernet speed slow since security update 2014-001

    Dear community
I'm running a Mac Pro early 2009. OSX 10.7.5. Internet through Ethernet cable connected to a dlink router dsl-g624t. This has been my setup for years. All worked fine.
As of last few days (corresponds with my updating the system with apples security update 2014-001) that my Internet download speed is 0.01 Mbps it used to be 5.0 Mbps. I can't connect to anything. Sometimes it's ok for a few seconds then dies down completely. Connecting to the routers own IP address is slow as well.
I've plugged the Ethernet cable into another mac (laptop) and all runs at approx 5.0 Mbps as it should. I've connected the Ethernet cable between the Mac Pro and the mac laptop and transferred a 1Gb file both ways with out any noticeable speed issues. I've connected my ipad wirelessly to the router and I can achieve good speeds, again about 5.0 Mbps. Same with my iPhone.
In system pref/network it states the Ethernet 1 is connected, with an IP address etc. as if there was no problem.
What is going on. The Ethernet cable works, the router works, a connection over Ethernet between my two macs works.
What doesn't work anymore is my Mac Pro connecting to the router via Ethernet. It's so slow it can't load a simple web page in either safari or Firefox, other web connecting apps time out as well.
    Someone please help
    With much thanks in anticipation

Going to reply to my own question here.
I've never let a mac get the best of me in 15years of working with them but this problem had me stumped. Anyway I did figure it out. Not being very experienced with network issues I had to tincer about a bit. Anyway the fix for this should someone else have it can be found here in... system preferences/network/ethernet (1or2)/advanced.../Hardware/ once in this option window I had to change 'configure' to 'manual' and 'speed' to '10baseT/UTP' and 'Duplex' to 'full-duplex' and 'MTU' to 'Standard 1500'. I then had my full ethernet speed back. I believe it had all been changed by the recent security update.
I hope that helps someone sometime.

  • TC slow ethernet speed w/ mac mini, not anti-virus

new TC 1tb, running wireless to one macbook pro, one sony laptop, and ethernet to mac mini. update done to TC, including airport utility. no anti virus.
using it as the primary wireless source, with cable modem.
first backup was awfully slow, both by wireless, then do-over by ethernet.
speed on local network streaming mp4s through ethernet cable is bad to awful. copying files from TC to usb (in mac mini) is awful. searching for songs through itunes is slow (though library is 500gb).
the heat explanation is of course, just laughable. you give me a beautiful flat piece of equipment and you don't expect me to put my mac mini on top? terrible design flaw if true.
also, tried the re-boot and the shortened DCHP time.
no other good explanations that i could find.
So unless there are some great ideas out there, i guess
i should understand from all the threads that this thing just doesn't work as a primary file server. and its not so good at backup either.
its just too slow. please help if anyone has another suggestion, but i think that regardless i have to take it back.
glad i didn't erase my library from the WD My Book.
what a waste of my time this has been.

just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store "genius" called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

  • Can I use more than one blue-tooth device at the same time on IPhone 4S? Like a wireless headsets and speed and cadence sensor for cycling computer, receive the data and listen music simultaneously

Can I use more than one blue-tooth device at the same time on IPhone 4S? Like a wireless headsets and speed and cadence sensor for cycling computer, receive the data and listen music simultaneously

As long as the profiles are different (ex. HID vs AD2P) you will not have any issues. But say if you try to use 2 keyboards at once, it won't work. Or 2 headsets at once. Your scenario seems fine.

  • Disappointing WRT610N Gigabit Ethernet speed

I'm very disappointed with the wired Gigabit speed on this WRT610N router. I've got three high end Gigabit capable computers connected to the router via the wired interfaces and the best speed I can get is from any system to another is 38% of Gigabit maximum (~46 MBytes/s). I've tried numerous protocols (SMB, FTP, SSH) all with about the same results. This must be some hardware limit of the router.  Is there any way to increase this speed? I really don't want to buy another router just to get good quality ethernet speeds.
PS: All cables are quality CAT6.

the ethernet switch BCM53115 is used on the wrt610N
this same switch is also used on the wrt320N router.
The hardware does support jumbo frames, however linksys did not enabled this in the firmware's.

to bad we have to complane that jumbo frames is not enabled.

  • IMac i5 27" - gigabit ethernet speed slooooooow

I know there are other (older) threads about this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2236017?tstart=0) but I thought I'd start a new one.
I have just purchased an iMac i5 27", and find that plugging it into my Netgear GS605 gigabit ethernet switch doesnt work as expected. My older 24" iMac works as espected, just fine.
I am able to get a gigabit connection (green light on switch) and if I try to copy large files form another Mac or my Lacie 2Big Network 2 NAS it works fine. BUT, if I then try to surf the web, my download speeds are ridiculously low (should be 30MB/s, getting 0.4)??
If I manually downgrade the ethernet controller settings to 100B/T, the internet speed works just fine, but obviously local transfers are then crippled to fast ethernet speed, which on a 200GB Time Machine backlup isn't much fun!
I have had many conversations with Apple Support, and returned one of these iMac's already, to find the next one does the same thing - all very frustrating.
So is there a fix? Can the Broadcom chipset be to blame? Is it to do with Jumbo frame support (whatever that is) - the Netgear switch supports it, but not sure about the iMac, and why does the internet speed drop so dramatically, when the file transfer speed works as expected over gigabit ethernet?
Grrrrr. Really frustrating I can't have high speeds on both types of transfer.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Unacceptable.
btw, i've already tried creating another user, and while things are ok in the beginning, slowly but surely the same symptoms begin to appear and then become chronic.
Have you tried Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
PS: i am sitting here proofreading this, and i can hear the machine every 5 seconds or so, going >"chunk-chunk" - ***!!??
That actually sounds like a bad hard drive. Run Apple Hardware Test

  • File transfer extremely slow in wireless or ethernet.

Does any anyone know how to improve??

How is the TC connected to the main router? Is it the main router?
Descirbe the whole network and how the TC fits in.
Do not test with both wireless and ethernet at the same time.
    Test from up close.
Test using 5ghz for wireless within the same room.
Give us numbers.. we cannot work with slow.. sorry but the issue can be your expections as much as the network.
Is it slow copying files to the TC pick a single large file and try. Or to another computer on the network??
    Is it just internet?

  • Web streaming: wireless or ethernet?

i'm considering getting an apple tv and i have a question for you experts. when you stream content from the web, such as internet radio or netflix, does the apple tv stream directly from its wired ethernet connection or is your computer doing the streaming wirelessly to the apple tv?
i wouldn't want to have to have the computer turned on. also, i get so many drop-outs with air-tunes on my airport express that i would rather stream internet radio without anything being wireless.
this may be a simple question but i don't see an answer anywhere and, not having an apple tv now, i can't figure it out.
    thanks.

When you stream content from the web, it goes straight to the web without your PC's involvement. You can go wireless or ethernet to netflix etc. You only need your system for iTunes store and iTunes library content.
    Regards.
