Wireless wlan ndiswrapper and Firestarter.
Hello, I was able to get my wireless working with the ndiswrapper... but the only way I can connect to an address, is to shut my Firestarter firewall off.
I'm sure there is a way to set my Firestarter, but when I go to preferences, and tick the boxes for "Internet connection sharing" and "DHCP" just lick in this picture from the Firestarter page: http://www.fs-security.com/docs/preferences.php
...it then gives me an error and tells me that I have failed to start my Firestarter firewall....but then my wireless connection finally works. Where as if I don't tick the box for "Internet connection sharing", it will say it's connected to a wifi stream, but then I can't get my web browser to load any pages...
So, I have my Firestarter set to work with my eth0 wired connection... and the only way I can activate my wireless when using someone else's random wifi stream, is to tick the box for "Internet connection sharing"... and then it allows my wireless to connect, but it is not protected by a firewall.
Are there any experts out there that can help me with the settings or configuration files?
Thanks,
-c.

Yeah the snapshot isn't versioned, so I had no choice. I'm hoping 1.5 (or 1.4.X) is released soon, as I don't like running the snapshot like that.

Ndiswrapper and the 2.6.13 kernel
The current ndiswrapper package 1.4-1 (Last Updated: Sat, 08 Oct 2005 00:32:51 -0400) does not work with the new 2.6.13 stock kernel. You should use the 1.4@051015 found here:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/snap … per.tar.gz
if you wish ndiswrapper to work with the new 2.6.13 arch stock kernel. I just upgraded everything on my laptop and the current stable version does not work, as it makes the kernel crash. Until the package is updated, just compile this version.
log in as root (su)
first uninstall the one you have
pacman -R ndiswrapper ndiswrapper-bin
the remove the config files
rm -R /ect/ndiswrapper
untar the archive and compile
tar xzvf ndiswrapper.tar.gz
cd ndiswrapper
make distclean
make
make install
reinstall your wireless drivers
ndiswrapper -i driver_file.inf
and check if they're installed
ndiswrapper -l
update the module dependencies
depmod -a
finally modprobe it
modprobe ndiswrapper
if the kernel does not crash, dance around and be merry.tyler wrote:wow, the package is updated, and its even more bleeding edge than the version I installed. thanks, i'll pacman it.

I am trying to get one of my old computers running with Arch, and have been having some issues.
I have been trying to use ndiswrapper to use my Trendnet TEW423PI wireless card. There should be no problems with that, as I have used it in the past with other computers and ndiswrapper and it worked perfect.
I installed all the packages on the core CD (base, base-devel), which I downloaded yesterday. Then I downloaded the ndiswrapper package and moved it to the computer, but when I tried to install it, it complained that it requires kernel 2.6-36 or newer, whereas the CD installed 2.6.33. I tried installing it with the --nodeps option and it still doesnt work. It installs, but with a "line 4: ndiswrapper command not found" error before it finishes. There is no ndiswrapper in /bin or /usr/bin or anywhere else it ought to be.
I downloaded the source files and compiled it myself with makepkg, and it gives the exact same error when I try to install.
I want to avoid, if at all possible, upgrading the kernel because the computer has no internet, and moving all the required files there manually would be a headache. I just need to get this installed once, so I can get the wireless connection running and upgrade, then I should have no issues whatsoever.
What should I do now?
-- I think this would be the right forum for this, if it isnt and someone wants to move it to installation or networking or wherever, feel free. But it seemed more like an upgrade issue than anything else.
ThanksUse a cable and -Syu, or download the packages on another box and move them over using a usb stick or similar? Or install from archboot which has .36?

Sometimes it is even enough to go outside to the waste bin to let my smartphone forget the settings for the wireless lan. When I return I have to enter the - not so short - code from my wlan router again. After that the internet connection is running as it should.
Additionally the alarm clock does not work, I can set alarms as I like, setting the volume to the max and activate also the vibration alarm but nothing happens when the preset time is arrived, even when the alarm clock is shown on the screen the whole time. Is my phone broken? Or is it a bug in my Firefox OS installation?
Where does Firefox OS store these values for wlan connection and alarm times? Is there an internal database that is maybe corrupted?Hi Markus,

How to Prevent or Block Rogue APs from Joining Your Wired or Wireless WLANs
Hi all, I deployed a WLAN with 1 WLC 4400 and 5 1252AP. I do not see the way to Block Rogue APs from Joining the Wired or Wireless WLANs
PART 1
There are three parts to this:
1. detect - automatic
2. classify - by default APs are untrusted/unknown, various methods can be configured to classify them as trusted and threat (connected to wired network).
3. over the air contain (aka mitigate) - in 4.x this is manual, in 5.x you can configure auto-containment
First you need to detect. WLC does this automatically out of the box. It listens the air for unknown APs, clients and ad-hocs. Are you seeing Rogue APs under Monitor > Rogues > Rogue APs?
Next, you can manually classify rogue APs as "known" (internal or external). Starting with 5.0 you can also build rogue rules based on RSSI, SSID, Clients, etc. If an AP is classified as "known" (internal or external), WCS stops alerting you.
Another key classification piece is to detect whether or not the rogue AP is physically connected to your network which is a high security risk. There are three ways WLC can detect it and neither of them is automatic. You must configure these methods manually.
1. Rogue AP Detector, aka ARP sniffing. You have to dedicate one AP as "Rogue Detector" (change AP mode from local to rogue detector). Configure the port the AP is connected to as switchport mode trunk (normally it's switchport mode access). Rogue Detector AP turns off and doesn't use its radios. When WLC detects rogue APs it can also detect the MAC addresses of any clients associated to that rogue APs, and the rogue detector AP simply watches each hardwire trunked VLAN for ARP requests coming from those rogue AP clients. If it sees one, WLC automatically classifies the rogue AP as "threat" indicating that the rogue AP is physically connected to your network. It doesn't actually do anything with the rogue AP, it simply classifies it and alerts you. Also, keep in mind that this method doesn't work if the rogue AP is a Wireless Router, because Wireless Routers NAT and ARP requests don't propagate to the wire.
2. RLDP. Rogue Location Discovery Protocol. This feature is by default turned off and can be enabled under Security > Wireless Protection Policies > Rogue Polices. This feature works only when the rogue SSID is open, meaning that it's not using WEP/WPA/802.1x. When you enable RLDP, your WLC will pick some AP (you can't pick manually) which hears Rogue AP traffic, it will temporarily shut off its radio, turn it into a client, and instruct it to associate to the Rogue AP as client (this is where the requirement comes in for the Rogue SSID to be open authentication). Once associated, AP gets a DHCP IP through Rogue AP, it then sends a special small UDP port 6352 RLDP packet to every possible WLC's IP address (mgmt ip, ap manager ip, dynamic int IPs). If WLC gets one of those packets, it means that rogue AP is physically connected to your network. This method will work when Rogue AP is a Wireless Router. But this method is not recommended. It has an adverse effect on your wireless clients because RLDP AP goes offline for a period of time disconnecting your clients and forcing them to associate to another AP. Also, keep in mind, that WLC runs this RLDP process *once* per detected rogue AP. It doesn't periodically do this, it only does it once. In some later WLC versions, you can configure RLDP to run only on "monitor mode" APs, eliminating impact on your clients. Also, you can manually trigger RLDP for a rogue AP from CLI "config rogue ap rldp initiate ". You can "debug dot11 rldp" to see the process.
3. Switchport Tracing (need WCS, and WLC 5.1). This is a later feature that requires WCS. You can add your Catalyst switches to WCS, and WCS will look at CDP information and MAC tables on your switches to detect whether or not Rogue AP is connected to your network. This works with secured and NAT rogues. You can also *manually* instruct WCS to shut down the switchport that Rogue AP is connected to. -
Problems with broadcom wlan adapter and wlan-button.
I've got a laptop (HP Compaq 6715S), which has an integrated wlan adapter (broadcom 4311/4312?). A couple of weeks ago the adapter was working ok with ndiswrapper and bcmwl5.inf driver, but it stopped working recently probably after ndiswrapper and/or kernel upgrade. Loading the ndiswrapper module from rc.conf made the whole system kernel panic (IRQ problem?) until I added:
acpi=noirq
to the kernel boot parameters. Now this error doesn't occur every time I load ndiswrapper, but the problem still exists. BCM43xx driver doesn't work either. I'm using the 64-bit arch.
in my rc.conf I have:

The other problem that I have is the wlan-button: The wlan adapter isn't always turned on at boot and I have found no way to turn it on from linux. It can be turned on by booting to windows or resetting the bios to defaults, but it is not very nice. I've noticed that pressing the wlan button adds one usb device:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard
Is there a way to fix these problems?lenni wrote:
When I used to use ndiswrapper, just downloading one of the generic INF files didn't do the trick for me. I had to go to my manufacturer's homepage and download it there extract the drivers from the exe and use them in order to get my card work reliably.
Also, have you used a 64 bit driver? This guy reckons you need it:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ost2952703
I guess I solved it. I have been using the 64-bit driver, but have tried the 32-bit driver from hp diver site too. For some reason ndiswrapper seems to install a driver named "ndiswrapper" with this 32-bit driver, which is why it didn't work. So my solution was:
1) Get the 32-bit driver from hp.com
2) rmmod ndiswrapper
3) remove all installed ndiswrapper drivers: ndiswrapper -r <drivername>
4) installed the 32-bit driver: ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf
5) ndiswrapper -l gave me:
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4312) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)
ndiswrapper : invalid driver!
6) Got rid of the weird ndiswrapper driver inside ndiswrapper: ndiswrapper -r ndiswrapper
7) modprobe ndiswrapper
Rebooted a couple of times and it seems to work ok.
How about the wlan-button problem? -
Continuous Wireless Client Associations and De-authentications
I have a remote site whose wlan consist of a 2112-WLC and twelve 1142N's. The issue I am seeing is that several clients will associate continuously throughout the day. This does not occur for any specific client or ap. These multiple associations appear to take place every 5-10 minutes most of the time. I have 4 other sites using the same wireless network equipment and I do not see this problem. I have verified the ap signal strengths and verified that the noise and interference levels are ok. Any assistance provided will be very appreciated.

Wireless w/ ndiswrapper; fails to get ip from dhcp
I've got a DWL-G510 and I recently used ndiswrapper to install the win2k drivers. It confirms 'driver installed, hardware present', iwlist can scan and pick up my access point, put in the WEP key, and associate the access point successfully (It comes up with the MAC Address of the router). However, then I go the old
ifconfig wlan0 up
dhcpcd wlan0
and it fails to receive an IP; it just sits there for a few minutes, does nothing, and downs the interface in ifconfig. And yes, DHCP is set up, as ethernet connections work fine. The wireless also works in windows, so it's not with that either. Is there any step that I've missed? (Yes, I've read the ndiswrapper installation wiki page)I boot:

I have a MAC desktop and RCN cable that I have internet through now. I tried to set up a linksys wireless router today and could not get the network settings right, or figure out how to create the network, or get connected. I was successfull for only a few minutes because my phone and laptop had picked up the signal. However my desktop still would not connect to the internet. I had to restart my cable modem after because even after returning to directly inserting the desktop to the modem I could not get on the internet. I am able to get on now but would like to have wireless for my laptop and phone. Do I have to have an Apple router? Are there any easy steps I can take to set up a network without doing any damage to my desktop? I am so lost and have been getting pop ups and even my time changed.
Please help a new person to Apple!why dont you go to linksys.com/downloads and get the quick install for your adpter

hi!!
i have arch with all the newst updates i use ndiswrapper and when i boot my arch i write this in the root tty1 console iwconfig wlan0 essid osv and connect to my network with dhcpcd but wen i write startx the kde is startting very slowly no i mean it wont start but wen i write dhcpcd -k wlan0 and turn of the network then it starts good
i dont know if this is in use to know but i cannot ping 127.0.0.1 or myhost localhost osv.glad: You can make this much easier on yourself by using the 'network' daemon on the DAEMONS array in rc.conf. The comments in that file describe exactly how to properly configure it.
I use the folowing settings:

Wireless remote control and FM transmitter in one?
Hello.
Does anbody know if there is a wireless remote control and FM transmitter in one product out yet for the iPod? I am wanting to keep my iPod in the trunk of my GoldWing and control it while I ride transmitting through the FM tuner.
Other ideas or a combination of products to accomplish this much appreciated!
thanks
iPod 80 GB Windows XPI spent some time (2 hrs) again with the vendor, trying to solve the issue.
The only result we got is that, when the PC is in suspended status, it can be resumed by pressing "ON" button of the IR Remote Control. That's all.
My suspect is therefore confirmed: it isn't a hardware issue. It lokks like the IR Remote Controller and the PC can talk eachother, but they speak different languages.
It is quite a surprise that I couldn't find any information on the use (Settings? Activation?) of the remote control, nor in the topics of this forum. Really I'm the only one trying to watch TV on the PC? Are there any users of a C540 who can tell me their experience?
Thank you -
HP Printer can no longer be found wirelessly by Mac and iOS devices?
I have an HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw printer which has been successfully connected wirelessly for quite some time. I recently replaced an older Time Capsule (flat square) with one of the new tower-looking Time Capsules, and the same replacement for an Airport Express I use as an access point. Again this is all the same setup as previously.
The issue is none of the devices can find the printer wirelessly anymore, despite the fact that the printer reports it's on the network and operating fine, and I can see the printer in the Printers & Scanners/Add window. I have attempted downloading and reinstalling the software from HP, deleting old printers in the Preferences panel and reinstalling from there, and nothing has worked. If I try to re-add the printer using the Bonjour Multifunction entry and AirPrint as the driver, it gets as far as the "Setting up the device" progress dialog and then fails with an error that reads: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device. Unable to communicate with the printer at this time."
I have tried setting up an IP reservation for the printer and using the IP setup in the Add window (instead of the default); with and without the HP Jetdirect protocol; using the AirPrint driver and the selected HP series driver -- no success with any choice.
So far my only workaround is connecting it by USB to the nearest Mac and sharing it on the network using Printer Sharing. This is not the ideal solution, of course, since it means my iOS devices still can't find it and the Mac needs to be turned on 24/7 to share out the printer. I bought this printer originally specifically for its AirPrint capability so I could print to it from iPads and iPhones as well as my Macs. Currently I can't print from any iOS devices so it's rather painful.
Any suggestions to get this fixed will be much appreciatedReset the TC to factory and start again..
New names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TCgen5 base station name.
I also strongly recommend using different names for the bands when things go wrong. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
Use WPA2 personal security with a short pure alphanumeric password.. (short meaning 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers)
Redo the setup of the Express based on the new setup.
Redo the connection of the printer to the wireless network.
Test the printer by pinging it from the computer.
Delete all drivers in the computer for the printer.. and start over.
That generally will get it running.
If not use the old TC as a wireless AP for printer connection .. by doing extend wireless with it and placing it near the printer. -
My Ipad did work on my wireless at home and works on other wireless but no longer at home. My IPhone works at home and others can use the wireless> Confused that it did work and now does not?
Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

Linksys Wireless Print server and my Mac G4
I just set up my linksys wireless print server and it's printing from my PC just fine - not so on my G4. My printer is a Canon Pixma ip5200, and the appropriate drivers etc are installed.
I know the IP address and have tried setting up the printer via IPP (and pinged it from the mac successfully). Just no success printing. The printer utility looks like it is printing to the printer but nothing comes out.
Any ideas? You won't be able to get this to work.
The Canon printer drivers won't allow you to connect to and print to a Canon printer attached to a wireless print server.
There is no solution, there is no way that this can work
You have three solutions.
Replace the Canon printer with another printer for which the drivers will work.
Replace the Canon printer with a networked Canon printer such as the iP4000r (or any other network printer) in which case you won't need the print server
Connect the Canon printer directly via USB to the computer to print.

I have a new Epson wireless printer connected and the iPad recognizes it but it still won't print. What is AirPrint & how do I connect to it?

Is your Epson printer on Apple's list of AirPrint capable printers? See <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356>.
If it is an AirPrint printer, then your WiFi router may not correctly handle Bonjour data required by AirPrint. Contact the router's manufacturer to see if there is a change to its setup or a firmware update, that will make it work.
One other possibility is that there could be a print job stuck in the iPad's print queue. Double click the iPad's Home button and a row of recent Apps will appear along the bottom of the screen. Scroll across and see if the Print Center is there.

UI Defaults in column properties
Hi ! At column level, there are UI Defaults properties (label, display as,...). Apart from the fact that they exist, does DM uses these properties? if so, in which feature ? Thanks regards Fabrice.
