Wireless won't work in 10.4.6 - 10.4.10...MacBook about to be Windows only

Hi. A while ago, month or so, I started having the wireless problems runnning rampant in the 10.4.10 release. It started with dropped connections to my linksys router, then spotty connections to University WPA. This drove me nuts and I tried every possible way to fix it. The fix on this board (using pacifist and reninstalling the appleairport.kext files) worked for a while, then it quit working again. I reinstalled back to 10.4.9 and that again worked for a while, and again it quit working. I finally decided I was fed up and reinstalled OSX, completely wiping my hard drive at the same time. This sent me back to 10.4.6. I stepwise updated from 10.4.6 to 10.4.9 installing whatever Airport updates it allowed, up to Extreme 2007-3. After any and every iteration, I get the same results:
Connection to Linksys router running DDWRT and WPA Personal, WPA2, WEP, No Security.
It connects for about 15-30 seconds. Internet works great. Internet stops working. Internet may or may not start working again in the next 15 minutes. If it does, it will last about 30 seconds to a minute. Eventually the Airport symbol goes gray. Attempted reconnects result in "Failed to connect to ___" from airport. This has happened constantly since 10.4.10, even after a complete reformatting of my harddrive. I am very upset.
Connection to University WPA Enterprise-----
I open 802.1X to connect. While watching the proceedings in "Internet Connect", status goes from Idle, to connecting, to authenticating....after 2 mins, 15, 30 it might say connected. It doesn't matter, the internet doesn't work. On rare occasion, it will ask me to "Verify the Certificate", when I select yes, it will say "Connected to ______ via TTLS" then the internet will work. It will work fine until I disconnect or close my mac. Upon reopening I have roughly a 1 in 30 chance of it working. I am very upset.
I don't understand why I would have these issues. My MacBook worked great wirelessly all through 2006 and through august of 2007. Reinstalling from my original disks should have made the software exactly the same as it was in 2006 when it worked. There is nothing on this machine that was not on it originally. Does this mean it's a hardware issue? If so, shouldn't my MacBook not work when I use windows? In any case, this is really upsetting me. Also, I have not contacted Apple, my last trip to the 'Genius Bar" resulted in broken speakers in exchange for repairing my headphone jack. Could one of the fine people on this board please help me out...any suggestions before this becomes a Windows machine?
Edit: I am currently leaving my Mac with 10.4.9 installed and Airport Extreme Update 2007-3.

Well, if there is anyone out there having the same problems I've been having, you might want to take a look at my blog. I wrote up my findings on two commercial packages there:
http://weblog.bosslogic.com/2006/05/betterfaxsupp.html
The bottom line on fax and efax: I was never able to get these command-line utilities to work. I suspect it's a misconfiguration in OS/X 10.4.6 or perhaps just some poor documentation... but, for the price, the commercial products solved what I needed quickly, easily and cheaply.
One thing I didn't mention in my blog: For higher-end, demanding fax services you might want to look at 4-Sight Fax. This is a server-based solution that starts at about $500 and can scale upwards. Far more than what I needed so I didn't look into it too closely.

  • 10.4.8- dimmed screen & wireless won't work

I downloaded the latest Mac update 10.4.8 and ever since my screen looks dim or darker. Not as bright and vibrant as it used to. I have read other posts of it looking blueish. I bet this is the same thing others are describing.
In addition, my wireless mouse and keyboard quit working. Anyone heard of any easy way to fix this or do should I wait for an update? (I am new to Macs.)
I have an iMac. Thanks for any suggestions.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.8GHzPowerPC G5 512MB DDR SDRAM

sorry your going through this as a new mac user. I've been using mac's now for about 20 years and 10.4.8 is the first really bad and IMHO defective update they've ever released. Just sit tight as Apple is great at addressing these issues and with all the posts here I'm sure they're working to resolve the problems.
As for the wireless, my problem was fixed by clicking on "Use Interference Robustness" in the drag down window, upper right hand corner where the 5 bars are to show airport signal strength.
Also search for info on 'preferred networks' here. That modification in network preferences helps as well.
As for the darker screen. Can't help you with that one.

  • Wireless won't work on my laptop

I have the N Ultra range wireless broadband Router. it has successfully worked on my desktop. But it won't pick up on my laptop.. I have a Lenovo laptop. I call Linksys all the time regarding this. And it works for a few days, then it goes down.. it's really annoying. Anyone can help me on this? Something that I can do on my own and not have to wait for 2 hours on the phone. Thanks!

If you keep loosing the wireless signals, then you should download and upgdate the drivers for your wireless adapter...

  • Updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.7, now wireless won't work?

Today I installed the new Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.7 on my MacBook Pro, and now I cannot connect to wireless networks.  I've searched everywhere for answers all night to no avail.  Other macbooks and pc's can connect to the network just fine, so it's definitely the software.
When I open the network settings, the Airport appears in yellow instead of green and says "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.26.111 and will not be able to connect to the internet".
I've tried turning the airport on and off, I've tried rebooting the router, rebooting the computer, rebooting the computer in safe mode, moving the System Configuration folder onto my desktop.  Nothing that I found anywhere on this forum has worked.
Now I understand that self assigned IP addresses starting with 169 will not be able to connect to the internet.  My question is what in the world can I do to get an IP address that will allow me to connect to the internet?

Hi! I have the same issue but mine doesn't  assign any ip address, just blank.  I have a brand new macbook.

  • ITunes through AX via Ethernet (not wireless) won't work

I cannot seem to play music through my AirPort Express (from an iMac G5) unless I join it's wireless network. The AX and the iMac are wired to the same Ethernet network, but I the AX is accessible through iTunes only if I select the AX's wireless network. Shouldn't I be able to play music from iTunes through the AX over Ethernet?

    Yes you can.
If your "wired network" already has a router on it, the best solution is to disable the router built into the Airport Express (which is currently blocking Airtunes access to the Express via its ethernet port).
To do this - run the Airport Admin Utility, select to view the configuration of the Express, and click on the Network tab. Uncheck the box next to "Distribute IP addreses". Update settings to the Airport Express. Finally (very important) restart any computers that were previously connected wirelessly to the Airport Express.
    That's it!

  • Hotspot won't work until reboot

I have an LG G2 on android 4.4.2.... and my hotspot won't work until I reboot the phone.  This is extremely annoying, as the only time I need the hotspot, I need it NOW, not in a few minutes.   How to fix this?

        Snn5,
Gotcha! Having a software update failure is definitely not normal. We need to get that software installed, and we need it to go smoothly for you. This may require a Factory Reset. Please back up your phone's information first as a factory reset will erase the entire phone and then follow these steps -> http://vz.to/1lGsddB  Let us know if the hotspot is still misbehaving after the reset is done.

  • My keyboard lighting won't work. I can't turn the light up on the keyboard?

The keyboard light control (F6 key) won't work...someone help please?

The MacBook uses it's camera to detect the light level in a room and ajust the screen/keyboard brightness appropriately. If you are outside or in a well-lit place, your Mac will sense this and give you a circle and slash sort of symbol when you press F6 to tell you that you are unable to turn the keyboard lights on.
You can disable this feature by going into System Preferences>Keyboard>Uncheck Ajust Keyboard Brightness in Low Light.

  • Wireless password won't work

trying to connect to wireless at work, but the password won't work.... i try'd the same password on ipod... works fine... also i can use wireless at home... no prob....
    any ideas?

Powerbook G4, you may have a wireless card that is too old and doesn't support newer encryptions schemes like WPA or WPA2. What are you using as your wireless encryption algorithm at home?
Per my profile, you can see that I have a computer designed and manufactured eight years ago. It uses an old 802.11 "Airport" card; not "Airport Extreme" as does my Mac Pro. It doesn't do WPA or WPA2. If the wireless access point (WAP) at work is using those, you'll be prompted for a WEP password because your computer doesn't know any better. But it won't work.
So first thing you need to do is find out what does the WAP use. Next thing you need to do is go into your System profiler and see what kind of Airport card your Powerbook has.
If it's not an "Extreme" or "Express" or whatever, just a plain ol' "Airport" card, then you are SOL trying to use that to connect to your work's WAP if they are using WPA or WPA2. There are some USB wireless thingies that you can plug in to an available USB port and you can use that to access the work (and home) networks. I know that BDAqua has previously posted a URL or three that point to some inexpensive USB 802.11 transceivers that you could use on your Powerbook.
As a side note, if this is indeed the case for your situation, this would also imply that you are probably using an inferior (as in hacked/cracked) wireless encryption protocol at home. Once you get a WPA2-capable USB thingy, get in to your router's wireless setup and change it to WPA2-PSK-AES.

  • My wireless keyboard won't work for one of the users

All of a sudden the wireless keyboard stopped working for me, but it works when my wife logs in.  I had to create a new account for myself and the keyboard now works.  However, the keyboard won't work for my original account. Any thoughts?

Does it shows up as a device in your BT menu under the problematic user? Does it connect? If you delete it from your admin account and re-pair it, does it work?
There is a command called ioreg, which can help as well.
Here is sample output from ioreg -lw0 | grep -i keyboard

  • Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu OS

I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and upgraded my BT broadband to Infinity on 28.12.11, using the same HomeHub3 that worked perfectly well with the old Total service.
It doesn't work, wirelessly. I can get an apparently strong connection, but its agonisingly slow. At the same time, an ethernet connection works well, When I switch from one to the other and test the speed, I can watch the bandwidth fall away (i.e.: it isn't immediately disconnected.)
Nobody at BT can or will help, telling me that Ubuntu is 'unsupported' (i.e.: it's my problem). I reported this problem to BT - ref: xxxxxx-xxxxxx - via its complaints form on 28.12.11, but have had no response.
I've spent much time this past week on internet help forums. It transpies that BT has known about this issue with Ununtu for six months, but has apparently done nothing about it and cannot suggest a solution.
Suggested workarounds from other Ubuntu users involve manually reconfiguring one's connection, but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings from N to G tech., but that only worked temporarily for me and, besides, my netbook is only a couple of year old.
When I was sold Infinity, nobody mentioned that it doesn't work with Ubuntu. Frankly, I feel it was mis-sold as I intended to increase the bandwidth of my Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price. Not from where I sit, it isn't.
The only solution I can see is to get BT to switch me back to their Total service, which suited me fine. I'm going to get their engineer to come back and uninstall Infinity. I will also complain to Offcom, as this situation could easily have been avoided had the BT sales person told me that Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu.

Firstly your negotiating skills with BT are far better than mine....
"....Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price"
I was on BT Total BB and had to pay an extra £2 pm for Infinity and then an extra £4.75pm uplift of the calls package to give me the same anytime calls I had previously.... And had to re-start another 18month contract!!! Ohhh well.
Right onto the problem... Webby's suggestion of making sure your on a clear or least used wireless channel is good advice.
Here is the link to the free software http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
    Have a look at a demo,- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf2kZCfYTxI
To be honest I would move your HH3 from the Automatic setting to a fixed wireless channel as they seem to work better like that.
If your Operating System won't work with Inssider I would then just try a different channel starting at 1 and work up... seeing how things go.
Regarding setting your HH3 to wireless g, that is a very backward step as the most you'll get over that would be around 20Mbps depending on your distance from hub etc.
Couple of pics comparing my speed test over wireless g and n in THIS POST.
Another thing I would try is a wireless n USB adapter... just in case your m/c is only g
Links of how to identify what yours is and pictures of the difference in the "Network Sharing Centre".. 54Mbps being g and anything above is wireless n....
Wireless n gives the best speed assuming your Infinity download IP is more than 20Mbps. Also wireless n signal is more robust penetrating walls etc.
There are links to the type of wireless n adapters I use... Picture of one HERE, (Don't need the extender cable shown in that picture).
    wwwebber's post was very useful.-
"I use Ubuntu on my laptop with BT Infinity & HH3 with no problems at all. BT is not at fault here - they do not support Ubuntu."
Confirming Infinity and Unbunto do work...
You say ".....but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings .... but that only worked temporarily for me......"
As changing settings worked temporarily you must have been able to log into your HH3.
If you really can't log in can you borrow a friends netbook running windows to get logged in perhaps?
Log in,- http://bthomehub.home/html/home/home.html go to Advanced settings, wireless. and change Channel settings from Automatic to a channel number then click on Apply.
I would place your laptop near to the HH3 and move the HH3 wireless channel to a clear channel or start at channel 1.
Try to get a good wireless n speed..... example of mine 37Mbps  over http://www.speedtest.net/
Then when you have a reasonable speed move your laptop away... you will notice a drop over distance that's normal.
I am 20' away from my HH3 and get 37Mbps through a plasterboard wall.
Regarding other routers people have used http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/List-of-Routers-to-replace-Home-Hub-3/td-p/298203
And see Ady's msg #21 and #25 in THIS THREAD.
"'ll try the netbook in different locations over the w/e and hope from a solution from Ubuntu before remonstrating further with BT".

  • Keys ±, 3, e, d and c won't work on wireless keyboard so I cannot log in to  my iMac

Keys ±, 3, e, d and c won't work on my wireless keyboard. I cannot log in to my iMac because my password includes a 3. I've tried logging in as a guest user and tested the keyboard with Safari. The problem keys do't work there either so it looks like a keyboard issue rather than a software one. Does anyone have any ideas about fixing it please?
(I'm sending this plea from my trusty MacBook Pro!)

Try resetting the PRAM. It may also be that that key has failed......
