Wireless wrt54gs

LOST CONNECTION CAUSE I HIT RESET BUTTON HAVE GOTTEN THE ETHERNET BACK AND THE WIRELESS SAYS IT HAS FOUND THE WIRELESS BUT WILL NOT CONNECT HELP PLEASE I KNOW IT HAS TO BE A SIMPLE FIX
THANK YOU
ANGLING

I have the same router and experienced the same problem w/laptops on my network. The first thing I did was powered down all devices connected to my network,  then unpluged the router, then unplug cable modem. I waited 10 min, then 1st pluged in cable modem-held down reset button on it for 10 sec. When all the lights were lit up, I pluged in router, waited for all those lights then finally turned back on main computer first followed by remaining devices. Next I logged into the router through easy link advisor. Once in: Set-up tab, advanced- OP Mode should be "Gateway", Interface: LAN & Wireless. Wireless tab, Settings: MIXED(use this if you will have wireless game consoles connecting to network), I reset my channel to "11" because of outside interfernce from cell phones, microwaves and cordless phones. SSID: Enable. Security, I set it to "WPA Personal" because of wireless game systems and older versions of network adapters. When I had it set on WEP Key with a 128-bit passphrase, the wireless devices would keep getting little or no connectivity and would constantly drop signal and could not connect. The Algorithm I have set to "TKIP" only. On Adv Set, Auth Type: AUTO. And make sure DHCP is enabled. Just to add, with these settings I was able to get a very diversified wireless network of devices to finally connect with a strong and constant signal. Going strong for 3 months now. Devices are laptops running XP Home, XP Professional, and Vista Basic, desktop being main, running Vista Basic 64-bit, a PSP 2001 & 2002, X Box 360 and PS3(lots of gamers in the house and neighbors too).
I know this is a lot to do but it worked for me. Hope you have the same results I did. Good luck!

  • Wireless WRT54G problems help please

A few days ago i set up a FTP server with my Wireless WRT54G V.3 wireless router. Then the next day i wasnt able to connect to it. I tried  everything. But couldnt get it to work. So i just went into the router setting and put factory settings. After that, the router wasnt able to give anything that connects to it a 192.168.?.? ip. Everytime i connect to it i get an ip of 169.I tried everything... and then i thought to myself, i messed up my router. So then next day i got another used router from one of my friends... its a wireless WRT54G V. 5 and when i try to set it up.... I get the exact same problem =\..... anybody has any idea... ive tried calling linksys but i was on hold for like 40 minutes and i gave up..... can anybody help?

If you have an extra ethernet cable you may reconfigure the router manually. For step-by-step instructions you may check it out from homesupport.cisco.com. You may also download the setup wizard from this website.

  • Network security - using two wireless WRT54G Routers

I have lots of  ports on my router open for numerous family software applications that are all on one computer and I would like to isolate these risky activities from the rest of my network.
I recently read I could use two routers, plug one router into another,  assign each a different starting IP address (such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1). Then attach my at-risk PCs--to the router that's directly connected to my broadband modem, and all  other computers to the second router.
Internet traffic to and from the unsafe PC area would then not reach my secure subnetwork at all.
I currently use a WRT54G V5...does buying a second one and using it as described make sense? It sounds like a rather inexpensive way to add security to my network.
I assume the second router gets connected from it's internet jack to one of the port jacks on the first router? Is there anything else that would need to be changed or set in either router to make this work?
Can I please ask if u respond to try and keep your response at a level that a non expert could understand.....I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks for everyones advice!

Thanks for the quick response....it is disappointing to see that I would lose the ability to share files......I  assume this is also true for printers as well??? Do you have another solution that you think would do a better job?
Anyway I did get a rather detailed response on how to make it work and it's in a fashion that even I could understand.
I thought I would share it in case anyone else had a interest to isolate a computer.
    Thanks
With regards to your concern, the setup that you suggested does address your concern. With this setup, we are somehow creating two networks on your location. In this manner, the computer that needs the set of ports will not be part of the network of the second router thus, it will not be able to affect the other computers.
With this type of setup, we will just have to leave the current settings of the WRT54G v5 (as long as its working properly this time). All we have to configure is the second router wherein we will have to change its LAN IP Address and also, configure its wireless settings in order for the said router to provide wired and wireless connection to all computers connecting to it. Please allow me to give you the steps.
Once we have the second router available, please connect one of the computers straight to the second router using one of the four ports (Ethernet port). With the configuration, only the second router and the computer will be connected with each other.
Before setting up the second router, I suggest that we do a hard reset on the router to make sure that it is on default settings and that we have a stable connection during the setup.
Here’s how to do a reset:
    1. Locate the reset button of the router at the back panel.
    2. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds using a pen or a paper clip.
    3. Release the reset button.
    Configuring the Second Router:
    1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
    2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type 192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
    3. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
    4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
    5. Go to Wireless Tab.
    6. Change SSID (e.g. Vic or your name or last name).
    7. Change channel to 11.
    8. Hit save Settings.
    9. Click on the sub tab Wireless Security.
    10. Set the Security Mode to WEP.
Using pass phrase Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits):
    1. Type a pass phrase.
    2. Click Generate.
    3. Copy key1 on a piece of paper (10hex character).
    4. Hit Save Settings.
For using manual key entry Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits)
    1. Under Key 1 type a 10 digit character from A-F and 0-9 (e.g.: A0B3F58C9E, 0123456789, ABCDEFABCD).
    2. Hit Save Settings.
    3. Click on the Setup Tab.
    4. Change the Local IP Address to "192.168.2.1".
    5. Click “Save Settings”.
    Finishing the Connection:
    1. Shut down all computers.
    2. Unplug the power from the back of both routers.
    3. Unplug the power from the modem.
    4. Wait for 30 second.
    5. Connect the WRT54G v5 router (using its Internet Port) to the Cable Modem.
    6. Connect the WRT54G v5 (using one of the four Ethernet ports) to the second router (using its Internet/WAN port).
    7. Power up the modem.
    8. Wait for the lights to stop blinking.
    9. Power up the routers.
    10. Start up your computer.

  • Wireless WRT54G is not able to do wireless and setup menu is out of whack

    Ok,
So I got a laptop with my new job and I figured hey I would love to surf the web wireless at home (laptop's wirelss connection works at work). I bought a Linksys WRT54G router Monday and attempted to replace my old trusty linksys 4 port BEFSR41 router that I've had since like 2000. The setup was incredibly easy and my desktop (which is wired) had internet. My laptop however still doesn't.
My laptop will attempt to acquire network address and Send packets but will receive none. I can view the wireless network that I set up but can't connect to it. So I went into the old trusty router menu at 192.168.1.1 and here's what I see. I see this both when using IE and firebox browsers on both my laptop and Desktop.
It appears my router is toasted? I've restarted it and reset it a couple times. Any ideas?

As the computer wired to the router is able to go online, make sure that when connecting wirelessly you are entering the correct encryption key. To verify the encryption key …..on the computer wired to the router …… open Internet explorer ……in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 (default IP address). Leave the username field blank  and in the password type “admin” ( Default Password). When setup page loads fully click on the tab that says…wireless….. Check the wireless network name SSID......it should be the same name as that of your wireless network......just below main tab  wireless click on the sub tab that says wireless security. Verify the security key here. If you are using WEP security….make sure that you are enter the WEP key for connection and not the passphrase.
U can also try changing the network name...wireless channel....security setting and then connecting to the new network from the wireless computer.
     Try upgrading the router firmware.

  • Problem accessing certain pages wirelessly WRT54G v2

    Greetings.
I have a WRT54G v2 router with the most current firmware. I have been having a problem recently (yes, even before updating the firmware) with SOME connections.
I try to log into Sprint's billing manager while in wireless mode, and it simply times out. Also with my insurance provider, same thing, times out, no access seems to work. However, if I connect directly to the router using an ethernet cable, it works just fine. I am at a loss.
Where might I look to solve this. It is not the router itself as far as full config, as it works when I connect directly to it, but only wireless problems it seems. Any ideas?

Ok, found solution that seemed to work.
Went into Setup, and changed to Manual and lowered the MTU from 1500 to 1400 and that seemed to do the trick.

  • Certain sites can't be accessed through Wireless WRT54G through 2nd PC?

Hello, I have 2 PC's and a laptop, the first PC is wired to my brand new Linksys Wireless - G Broadband WRT54G router, my internet connection is through my cable company and I have a DYNAMIC IP address. My second PC is connected to the router via a brand new Linksys Wireless - G PCI Adapter card. My laptop is connected to the router by its wireless card that came in it (I don't know what kind it is). The firmware I have for my router is the version that came with it on my setup disk, Firmware Version: v1.00.6. Both PC's and the laptop run Windows XP Home Edition.
Here is my problem, both PC's and the laptop can access the internet. The first PC can access EVERY site amd SO can the laptop, but the second PC CAN NOT login to ANY email sites or any sites like PAYPAL or anything like that, please tell me how to fix this problem and why can the first PC and the laptop access these type of sites but the second PC can not?
Cookies and Javascript are enabled on both PC's and the laptop. And on the router in Firmware I have under the ADMINISTRATION >MANAGEMENT link I have the "Access Server" HTTP and HTTPS checked and the "Wireless Access Web" Enabled checked. Both PC's were hooked up to different iternet connections before I got the router and PCI card can could access all sites.
Please help me solve this problem?Message Edited by ABR on 07-13-2006 07:11 PM

Try changing your MTU size to 1300 on the router or maybe setting a static IP on it.

  • Going from wired BEFSR41to wireless WRT54G, won't connect

I am trying to install a new wireless router (WRT54G) and removing my existing wired router (BEFSR41).  However, I have followed the connection instructions and it does not recognize the router (not connected).
Also, I have Vonage VOIP router (RTP300-VD) and I tried to connect the network without connecting this router.
What's the proper way of replacing this wired router to wireless?
    Please advise. Thanks.

    HI,
can you post a few more details , such as which is your main router that's hooked direct to the modem ? and also the IP of the VOIP router.

  • Using Two secured wireless WRT54G V 8 & V5 in different locations with one gateway

This should be easy for the diehard tech guys, but it is new for me.   I have set up plenty of wireless routers, but I have been asked to set up a pair of WRT54G's in my church.   One Version 8 is in the church where the internet gateway is located.  This is then broadcast and received by an antenna in another building a short distance away.   It was working fine until an upgrade was done and now the setting for the second router are gone.   Can someone direct me to the screens and settings needed to restore the second router.   Please remember we are using WEP protocol and there are two (2) separate pass phrases so it is likely a set up on the second router needed to recognize the transmission of the first.   Thanks for your help and knowledge in this area.

i'm not sure if i picture this correctly:
internal gateway -> WRT5Gv8 -> wireless signal received by an antenna -> ethernet connected to a port on the 2nd router.
    is this correct?
note: to access the configuration "screen" plug in one computer to the router and put in http://192.168.1.1 on the browser.

  • Wireless WRT54GS speedbooster question

    Hello everyone.
I have a few questions if someone could give me some answers. I'm using Vista Ultimate. I've got to tackle  installing the router again since I have a different computer and then I'll have to set up networks to other computers here (3) actually. But I have had my wireless speedbooster for a year and now got to go through the whole process again. My question is why do they call it wireless when you have to plug in cables? What is the wireless part suppose to consist of? Someone came to my house this past weekend and said something about it and it did make me wonder about that.
And how far can you actually set another computer to your network. Is it only in your household location or can you let someone 10 minutes away to network with you or add them on your network.
I tried to search for the wireless question but I couldn't find it and I did go under general question but for some reason couldn't find a new message so I could ask. It's been very aggravating and I didn't remember it being this aggravating before. Also I've read here that I don't have to install the router through the CD. I have tried to do that on these vista windows which I hate and I'm going to install windows 7 over this when I get the chance but I got to tackle one thing at a time. You'll never know if you don't asking tried to connect the router and computer using the CD it goes through the whole thing but never really configures it but then it was very very slow after that so it must have done something. So  now it's not even plugged  in or connected at all. Ever since I disconnected and connected my DSL back to my computer I have these issues  whenever I cut my computer it telling me these message. When booting up 1-"cannot communicate with DNS 208 104 244 45 network diagnosis pinged the remote host with no response". And this message "windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding at this time this usually means the firewall is running between the two and computers (I have only one connected at all at home for now!) and blocking the domain. Windows have confirmed that the firewall on computer is confirmed correctly to allow this connection but however a firewall is blocking your connection". Can anyone guide me somewhere or give me links to follow because I have a serious cornea infections and hoping that I haven't lost my eyesight in one eye and I'm not suppose to be on the computer to let my eye rest.
Any help would be very much appreciated very much
    Thanks, Harley123

The Router which you have its an 4 Port Ethernet / Wireless Router. Well its not necessary to Hardwired your computer always to the Router. Once your Router is Configured properly, then you don't need to connect your computer, you can use all the computers Wirelessly and they all will be able to go online... Just for an Initial Setup you need to Hardwired your computer to the Router, Once its done then you need to unplug the Ethernet cable from your Computer and your computer should be able to go online wirelessly.
The wireless signals of your Router can go upto 80 to 100fts, Not beyond that. As you have mentioned that you want to share the connection with some who is 10min away from your Place, then its Impossible.
There are 2 different ways to configure your Router, Using the Setup Disk or Configuring all the settings on your Router Manually.
Whenever you connect your Modem to your Computer and if you face that problem just you need to Unplug the power from the Modem wait for 10sec and replug to the power to your Modem and check if you are Online.
Windows Vista has Many issue while connecting to Internet. Sometimes you get all the information on your computer and your computer is properly connected, but the Vista computer doesn't let you go Online.

  • Cannot connect using Wireless WRT54G

I use windows vista and I can connect using an ethernet cable. But whenever I try to connect using wireless, it says "the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network" How can I fix this?

The wireless settings on your Vista computer must match the ones on your router.

  • Set up linksys wireless wrt54g to macbook

I am getting internet directly from the router that my isp sent me. I hooked up the linksys router and still get internet. When I go to the linksys website to set up wireless, it is not letting me save anything, saying it unexpectedly dropped from the server. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Any good websites or instructions I can follow?

Well, there are several options for you.
I believe the Embarq modem is actually a rebranded ZyXel modem/router, and has default private IP address 192.168.2.1. When you connect the Macbook directly to this unit, check your Mac's IP address in Network Preferences and confirm that it is 192.168.2.x (x could be any number from 2 upwards). If it's 192.168.1.x (eg 192.168.1.100) you'll need to reconfigure the Linksys, because 192.168.1.1 is the Linksys' default IP address too. Both units cannot have the same IP address.
As I said above, you have to configure your units so that only one of them acts as the router/DHCP server. It doesn't really matter which one you choose. Here are your options:
    1) First, you can actually have the Linksys router do the DSL login for you. In this case, the modem acts purely as a passive bridge. You would have to attach the modem directly to your Macbook and configure it into bridge mode according to its directions (either through a web interface or through the "telnet" command in Terminal). Once it is in bridge mode, you would set your Linksys router to perform the DSL connection. Contact your internet provider to get the connection values (usually a user name plus password, and you need to know whether your connection uses PPPoE or DHCP).
    2) You can have the modem make your DSL connection, but disable its routing/DHCP functions.
    3) You can have the modem do the DSL connection and routing/DHCP. The Linksys would purely be a bridge and wireless access point, probably using a static IP address on the ZyXel's subnet (eg 192.168.2.200, so that you can easily access its web interface).
You can of course replace the Linksys with another router, but you would still have to make one of the above choices. Your ISP (CenturyLink?) should be able to give you some assistance too.
    Matt

  • Linksys Wireless WRT54G Stuck at 300kbs??

Can someone explain why the download speed is so slow?
Im only getting like 300kbs max and now more
anyone know what is causing this??

    I'll give you an example.
Right now.. I'm downloading a game off of steam, and its showing me my download rate and the % done the download rate will not go above 300kbs it just stays below it around 200-300kbs
And I remember when downloading patches when I used to play world of warcraft, I got the same download rate of 300kbs

  • Wireless WRT54GS error 322 help please.

I followed the instructions and put the disc in first. Followed all the steps, my connection passed and all that but it halts at step 4 for awhile(2-3 mins) then gives me error 322.
In addition, when I try to follow the steps to configure the router manually: I attempt to type the IP into the address bar of my internet explorer page(just the number, no http none of that), it does a google search for xxx number and says page cannot be displayed etc.
Dunno what to do. I've turned all my firewalls off while doing this. I called tech support and got someone so thickly-accented I couldn't understand them at all(no joke and I apologized profusely to them but I honestly couldn't communicate with this person, was a very heavy indian accent). Called again and got someone better, went through a bunch of steps with this individual only to have her attempt to transfer me to a phone service that would cost me $29/hour, I hung up immediately.
On a side not: The router is hooked up now, the connection to my pc is fine(wired). Also, when I attempt to sync it with my Wii as well, the Wii detects the linksys signal but can't get to it for some reason. I believe if I could just get to the IP router config page using my web browser it could be worked out, but as I stated above, it does that google auto search.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Oh yea, running windows vista, quad core 2.2, 3gb ram.

Maybe the IP Address of the router is different then what you are entering in the IE...
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
The Default Gateway Address is the IP Address of your router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type the default gateway address amd see if you are prompted for a Username and Password...

  • WRT54G v6 - Can Connect to wireless network but can't access internet

Ok, this is my last resort for help. I spent two hours yesterday with linksys "chat" support to no avail.
    First the techincal details:
OS for all machines = Windows XP
Laptop w/two adapters - one wired, one wireless
    WRT54G v6 upgraded with 1.00.9 firmware
    SpeedStream modem from DSL provider
I have manually set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, primary and secondary DNS for my wireless adapter (using the Alternate Configuration in the Internet Protocol Properties of the Wireless Network Connection). When I connect to the wireless network I see that the IP, subnet, gateway and DNS server IPs are all correct (via ipconfig /all).  I see that I am connected to my SSID (11.0 MBps, signal strength Excellent) however I can't access web sites (the server not found message appears in the browser) nor can I ping the router IP or any other IP (LAN or WAN).
My wired PC works fine with this router. My laptop works fine with this router when wired.
Anyone face a similar situation and have a solution?  Thanks.

    A new discovery...
When I disable the wireless security on the router, I am able to connect to the wireless network, ping the router and access the internet.  So, there is apparently something wrong with the WEP security (although I am able to connect to the wireless network when WEP is enabled).
I am thouroughly confused. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • WRT54GS and wireless xbox

Maybe stupid question but I'll ask anyway.  Just bought XBox 360.  Have a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router.  Do I need to purchase a wireless adapter for the Xbox 360 or is one built in and all I need to do is set it up?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I am trying to access Xbox live with new Xbox360 via wireless WRT54GS.
I am able to get the Xbox to recognize the wireless network. but when I run test for Xbox live the message comes back that the network doesn't have sufficient MTU setting. Says Xbox live requires minimum MTU of 1364.  When I log in to the router IP address from my PC to check the settings, it says MTU is set at manual and has a value of 1492.  So I don't understand why Xbox sees insufficient MTU.
My daughter has an IPOD and also can't access our wireless home network, so I wonder if there is the same problem affecting that too.
BTW the router firmware version is v2.07.1, Feb. 26, 2004, in case that's a factor. I quickly checked for firmware updates on Linksys.com and encountered the request for hardware version. Says not all firmware versions are supported by all WRT54GS's.  Don't know where to find the hardware version.
Then I see the latest post about enabling UPnP - is that necessary to get the Xbox to communicate with this model router?
    Thanks for any help.
