Wirelessly streaming to Apple TV

Hi all, first time on this forum so I'll make this question brief!
I want to steam content to my Apple TV, obviously this can be handled by my MacBook using iTunes however this seems like a clumsy way of achieving this task as it required my Macbook to be on at all times. Is there anyway of using an Airport Extreme Router to wirelessly stream my content 24-7, or would I have to buy a Mac Mini and use it as a server?

I have a similar question, regarding streaming. My iTunes library is on my desktop, which is always connected to my network. In order to not have to sync the library to my Apple TV and stream to it instead does the network have to be particularly fast? I have both a g & n networks (one is Airport the other is Time Capsule). My reason for asking stems from changing the Apple TV iTunes library a few times (from network problems - had to re-establish the library connection) and iTunes wants to re-sync all the content back to the Apple TV. Which is a VERY time consuming ordeal. If I understand streaming I should tell iTunes not to sync with the Apple TV, correct? Then I can view content from the connected iTunes Library, correct?
One other oddity, the long syncs (I tried doing them at night when the network was not busy) results in my desktop HD having minus marks by the Applications (and I believe Library) folders - which is a permissions issue I believe. What could be happening during the sync to cause that? A reboot fixes that minus thing, but what causes it?
I have wanted to stream for a long time since the Apple TVs HD is limited and with HD content coming more common it will fill up fast.
Any suggestions, pointers to pages with help, would be greatly appreciated.
Tom

  • Apple TV 2 - Slow wireless streaming from iMac

I recently purchased the Apple TV2 after being very happy with the first Apple TV. The direct wireless streaming form my iMac to my Apple TV2 seems to be extremely slow. Music videos which played fine on my first Apple TV even though the Apple TV Hard Drive was at full capacity take like 2-3min to start and then still freeze up in halfway through. I have not changed anything other that swopping out the old Apple TV for the new one. At this point the Apple TV1 gives me a much better experience than the Apple TV2. My iTunes liabrary is on the external hard drive but this has never been a problem on my iMac or old AppleTV. What could be causing the streaming to be so painfully slow.... surely this could not be the intended Apple experience.

I did have many connection issues when I first got my ATV2- found it was the saturation of wireless networks around my house. I ran iStumbler to check out what channels were available- and found none- all channels had more than 1 network on it. I think the ATV2 can lose a good connection quite easily- causing it to take longer to buffer.
I upgraded to an Airport Extreme and ran the ATV and iMac on the 5Ghz channel- that helped big time (I was the only 5Ghz network broadcasting).
So, check it out with iStumbler for Mac and you may be suprised.

  • New Airport Extreme network won't hold stream to Apple TV

(I thought about posting this in the Apple TV forum but I think this is more appropriate here.)
For months I had a network configured in my home that included two Airport Express base stations. My cable modem plugged directly into one of them (in my office) and then both computers (G4 desktop and new laptop) shared internet, etc. via wireless. The other base station was in my living room to extend the network.
Upon getting an Apple TV many months ago, I began streaming my iTunes library that is stored on the G4: tens of thousands of files. I used this means of employing my Apple TV and listening to my music just about *every day*, for months. Streaming was always smooth -- never a hiccup, never an interruption, and I was thrilled by this new way of accessing my collection.
Recently, however, I replaced the office Express station with a new Extreme station, thinking it would possibly make the network faster as I could now connect the station back to the G4 via an Ethernet connection, now at least having one computer on the internet via a lined connection rather than wireless. And the new network works well in that aspect.
However, I can no longer stream any music to my Apple TV. It sees and accesses the library as it always has, but now just about every song gets choked up and drops the stream, no matter how I reconfigure the network (channel, transmit power, multicast rate, etc.).
Does anyone have any advice regarding how to make my network stable again so that I can resume streaming? I'm very disappointed that a major purpose for my Apple TV has been eradicated despite the fact that I thought I was actually upgrading.
Other factors could include the fact that within this time both the Mac OS software (10.4.10) and iTunes (7.3) have been updated by Apple. (I also wonder if the new Extreme station is too sophisticated for my G4, which maybe can't keep up with it, thus the choking?)
    MacBook Pro 15" 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Such as
    1) A network config issue. The G4 is still trying to
    use Airport.
I have Airport shut completely off on the G4.
    2) A software issue. The G4 is running a process
    which is slowing it.
I don't notice any odd processes in Activity Monitor.
    3) A hardware fault. The G4 has a hard drive with
    errors, causing retries.
There are no notable errors on the drive but the whole process of accessing my iTunes library seems plodding and inefficient. The beach ball comes up a lot when accessing new parts of the library in iTunes.
    Do a disk check.
I ran a disk check and defragmented not very long ago, so it should be okay.
Make sure software update is up-to-date. Reboot it.
I really thought today's iTunes 7.3.1 update would nail the problem, but it didn't... After 30 seconds, streaming stopped, Apple TV went back to menu.
Check Activity monitor for network speed, and
    unwanted processes.
Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

  • Wirelessly stream from macbook to tv with only coaxial input

I was hoping for some help. I travel a lot and end up in hotels with TV's that only have a coaxial cable input. Is there a way and what products do I need to wirelessly stream media mostly video from my macbook to a tv with coaxial input only. I have a RF converter so I can stream from an ipod to TV's like this. But I would like to stream items on my laptop. Since this is typically for travel, I dont need advice about using an apple tv, etc. Was just hoping someone would have been in a similar situation and can offer me some inexpensive and easy to travel with advice. Many thanks in advance.

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio. If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug.
The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

  • Streaming Music, Apple TV stopps playing it

While I'm streaming music, Apple TV often stopps to play it after a few minutes. iTunes is still going on with streaming it. The connection to the wireless network is excelent and apple tv is showing all the time in iTunes library. All updates have been done. Anybody knows about this problem?

Thanks for your welcome greatings. I have a airport extreme basestation which is conected to the internet. The conection to the mac is on the best and also showen as well on the atv. I have no problems to download files from the internet. The download rate is stable. What kind uf interference could this be? Atv is shown permanently in the itunes. When I new startup Itunes and I just choose a songlist from my library it works usually for about one hour. If i replay one song or change to a other list, it usualy starts to make troubles after 5-10 minutes. the speaker of my living room are all the time showen in the right corner. When it stops playing the song, itunes is going on to play it - you see this i in the play status of the song - it is still moving and count the time that is left of the song. I can then change the speakers to "computer" and back to atv and it will work for an other 10 minutes. Synchronisation of all Playlists, movies and pictures etc works nice and proper. It is no question about the actually playing song. It's more like apple Tv starts to sleep after a while . I have all playlists which i use also on the atv, but on the reason I have the atv connected to my beamer, i don't like every time to start it and just choose my playlist. I usally don't stream video over the mac. Over the internet (youtube) works fine. I have some podcasts which it automaticly sync with the atv. this also works fine. A lot that works - but not all...

  • Why is local video streaming to Apple TV jerky?

Video streaming to Apple TV (v 3) has always been smooth. No matter what the online source -- from YouTube to Netflix -- the video is consistently good. Video streamed from Macs, though, is jerky to the point of unwatchable. Even when I stream it from a a Mac connected by ethernet with wi-fi off, the result is unwatchable.   I cannot think what the problem could be. My wi-fi signal is strong (from two bridged Apple Extreme units) so when I stream wirelessly network shouldn’t be the problem, and I’m just a few feet from both ATV and AE.

Seems that if it's network related, this is going to be a hard nut to crack.  I assume you can bring your Airport Extreme in to be checked out, but if you are using another brand of wireless router, you won't get much help there.  I know wireless interference can play havoc with signals and one of the things I'd check out with some sniffer software is that possibility.  Just sitting here in my kitchen I can see signals from 15 different wireless routers in my neighborhood.  Using 2.4 GHz channel selection can make all the difference between good and poor performance.  Granted those 15 access points in many cases aren't close enough to interfere, a couple are and I've seen performance on my Macbook Pro suck sometime because a close by wireless router pops onto or close to the same channel I'm on.  That's a lot why I bought an Airport Extreme and use the 5 GHz side as much as possible.  In the case of my Apple TV and all my Apple devices, I run on the 5GHz side.  Signal strength is good and when I get the slow downs when using Airplay, the reboots of the streaming devices usually resolve the issues.

  • Time Capsule needs to be reset every time I print wirelessly or watch Apple TV

    Hello all!
My Time Capsule keeps dropping my wireless printer and Apple TV. Every time I want to stream a movie to my Apple TV it needs to be reset, and everytime I want to print wirelessly it needs to be reset. However, my internet connection remains constant and never has any interuptions.
Please help, it's getting really annoying to run upstairs to reset the time capsule every time I wanna watch a movie.
    Thanks

It is reported here all the time that the TC needs daily reboots.. you are highly fortunate that it is only weekly..
The fact is the old TC using 7.5 firmware was probably hugely more reliable than the current one which is not able to be flashed back beyond 7.6. There is a bug.. and as yet no Apple confession of issues.
But most people can get away without a reboot.. you just need to disconnect all users.. which was an option in the v5 utility.. now left out of v6.
Strongly recommend you install v5 utility.
(Or get electrical timer to restart the TC on a nightly basis).
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Most common message in history of the TC.. something has failed to unmount.. Lion and esp. Mountain Lion are affected.
Simple way.. reboot the TC to lose the connections..
    Might take a network reboot.
But from 5.6 utility you can disconnnect all users.

  • Have to restart iTunes EVERY time I want to stream to Apple TV!

I have the 2012 Apple TV and while Netflix, Youtube, etc. normally work well, I have to restart iTunes EVERY time I want to stream to Apple TV! My iMac is always on and the newest version of iTunes is always running. It doesn't seem to matter if the iMac is in sleep mode or not, and I have a very strong wifi signal coming from my Airport Express. Every time - not sometimes - I want to access music, TV shows or movies in iTunes on Apple TV, it says my library is loading, or cannot connect. Every time. What can I do?

WC, When I use the term Home Sharing it is perhaps a little oversimplified, it is quiet impractical and often overkill to continually restate the complete sequence of events that led me to 'a fix', however, I did not suddenly one day find a problem, switch to wi-fi and find all was well. There was significant investigation done on my part to try to find a solution. if by me saying I moved to wifi and it worked, others can move to wifi and have a fix, great. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here, others much cleverer than me are looking at that...
I had a functioning setup over wired until approx 2 months ago with an ATV2 connecting to Imac library, I was at the time occasionally running some software that restarted itunes once finished which may have masked the problem if it was there, unlikely though. I purchased an ATV3 with a new TV, this upon installation required an ios update much the same time as the itunes update.
I noticed the white light on the atv3 flashing when it was asleep, this was not something i had seen on the atv2, Investigation suggested this was normal behaviour, I remain unconvinced of this.
from that point on 'Home Sharing' did not work until a restart of itunes, it would then work all night (6+ hours)
My mac was set to sleep over night, I tried turning that off-no difference, turned ip6 off-no difference, once it hangs other devices on the network are unable to see the itunes lib, iphone, ipad,MBP etc
Once the thing hangs, Netstat shows a massive quantity of open ports 100/150+ to each on/sleeping atv,  a restart of itunes clears this lot. with wired, these connections start to build again, with wireless not so much.
looking back on here shows folks have had this problem in various guises since early 2011, apple by their own admission state the last update 'fixes some issues with Home Sharing', it seems it introduced some for me...
I am quite sure some peoples problems are down to underlying network problems however this is supposed to be 'Home Sharing' it shouldnt need a degree in computer science to configure, it should just work.
I am not about to pull my network apart to troubleshoot any further, between mac & atv's there are 2 x Giga/switches(netgear) and an Airport Extreme(bridged), the atv cable was plugged into the A.Ex no dice and now connects w/less to the same box and works fine...

  • Why won't some of my MP4s stream to Apple TV (or iPad) via Home Sharing?

Hi all. I've been converting my DVDs, HD-DVDs, and Blu-rays to MP4, using MakeMKV and then Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 64-bit for encoding. I have been intending to play the files on my iPad, both transferring to the device and streaming via Home Sharing. I also want stream these via Apple TV (3rd gen, Model A1427) in the house via Home Sharing.
All the files sourced from HD-DVDs & Blu-rays seem to work fine. However, more than half the DVDs I've converted -- using the same Handbrake preset I've been using for the BRs -- will not play back on the iPad, or streamed to the iPad, or streamed to Apple TV. The files will copy to the iPad, but for both device playback and streaming, I get the error message "The operation could not be completed." On Apple TV, it's "An error occurred loading this content, try again later."
The files will play in iTunes for Windows, and they will play in VLC. (Files bought from the iTunes Store also stream fine.) There is no metadata in these files, but I am manually adding a poster image once I drop them into iTunes.
It seems pretty clear that this is a problem with the file itself, but since the only issues I'm having involve streaming, I reset my router for good measure. I restarted the Apple TV and quit all the apps on my iPad before restarting it, too. I've also made sure the firmware on all devices is up to date. None of that had an effect.
I compared a DVD rip (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adeventure) to a BR rip (Independence Day). Both feature exactly the same bitrates & sample rates for video and audio -- according to the Windows Properties -> Details tab, Data rate is 1499kbps, Total bitrate 1659, 23 frames/second, 2 stereo audio channels at 48KHz. The only difference is the BR frame size is larger (1920x812), and of course the run times & file sizes are different. But the bigger file plays fine, and a lot of these smaller files do not.
MP4s from DVDs that will stream: Toy Story, Dead Again, Clue, School of Rock.
MP4s from DVDs that won't stream: Ocean's Eleven, Escape from New York, Galaxy Quest, Robocop (Criterion). Shaun of the Dead, Team America World Police
Again, these were all converted on the same PC with the same software and same settings. If there's a common thread among the source material of the MP4s that will play and won't play, I don't know what it is, but I figured it would not hurt to list it.
My Handbrake settings are based on Handbrake's AppleTV 2 preset, with the following modifications:
Avg Bitrate 1500, 2-pass, no turbo 1st pass
    Framerate: 30, Peak
    Optimize:
    x264 Preset: Very Slow
    H.264 Profile: High
    H.264 Level: 3.1
Container is MP4, as is the file extension. (Since dragged-and-dropped MKV files default to M4V in Handbrake, I select MKV then re-select MP4 from the Container drop-down before adding to Handbrake's queue.)
Someone suggested I simply change the file extension to M4V, so I tried it, but that did not fool any of the stream devices.
I have been testing the output MP4 files on my PC as I go, and once they played fine in VLC after Handbrake, I have been deleting the MKV files. I can go back and rip them all again if I have to (these are all from DVDs I personally own), but obviously I'd rather not do that! So my questions now are:
    - Could this be related to the audio stream? I've been opting for the DD 3/2.1 stream whenever possible when ripping, and letting Handbrake mix it down.
    - If I run the MP4s through Handbrake a second time with a different setting, will it do a pass-through convert instead of a full re-encode? (I don't want to shrink the video if only the audio needs attention.) If so, which setting should that be?
    - Is there a way to repair these MP4 files without completely starting over with a fresh MKV?
    - If I have to start from scratch, should I go with Constant Quality over Average Bitrate?
Hopefully someone can spot my issue based on this description. I'm happy to send you my Handbrake settings as a .plist file and offer any other info I can, as I'm stumped as to what went wrong. There has to be a logical reason. Thanks!

I've continued tests on different films, and tried my entire collection. I've found about two dozen that will play fine on the PC, but will not cooperate when streamed to either Apple TV or my iPad. I tried several more tests with the audio, and that turned out not to be a factor -- I could not replicate that on another test.
I wonder if something in the header of these files is corrupted or a flag is set incorrectly or something along those lines, as the data appears to be fine -- it's just not "handshaking" with my streaming hardware and/or the Apple Home Sharing code that powers it.
Is there any way for me to "scrub" these files and amend their headers, or get into the file and tinker with that info by hand?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't, but you have a few alternatives.
Best option: If you made the movie on the DVD in iMovie (or even another editing application) and still have the project, go back to the project and export it for Apple TV (using the Apple TV preset)
Next best option: If you still have the original movie that you put on the DVD, open it in QuickTime and export it for Apple TV (using the Apple TV preset)
Worst option: Use something like Mpegstreamclip (Quicktime Mpeg2 playback component required) to convert the DVD to h264.

i don't have any experience with DLNA TV's but i recently moved my iTunes library to a NAS. streaming content to airport express remote speakers and TV2 works great. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (except the airport express) so i'm not sure how well streaming e.g. HD movies to TV over wifi works.
