Wirelss networking macbook to a wired PC?

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times before (kindly point me to the correct place, please!). I did do a quick search but was fruitless (didnt really understand much)
I am a bit of newb at this and not even sure if it is possible with my setup. I want to create a home network. Currently I have a cable modem connected to a Netgear Range Max MIMO WPN824 router (802.11g), which is in turn wired into my desktop XP-based machine.
Now I was thinking that it must be possible to create a home network which allows my macbook core due to "speak" to my pc over via the wireless connection. I think I have all the necessary options on my macbook switched off preventing this from happening.
All I really want is an idiots guide telling me how to get this network up and running. Does anyone know of any useful sites/guides dealing with this kind of enquiry?
Did I mention that I was a newb? I'm not 100% sure how to set up a home network so any advice you can give/point me too will be gratefully received.

Well, since you only actually have one other system currently on the same connecttion which you want your "network" to be, and the one you wish to add is a Mac to a Windows Network, it gets a bit more complicated. I have found 2 different ways to connect my macs to my windows home network (which is already set up fully and working), though I have not actually taken the time to attempt using these procedures to do so (I have many other things I have been doing lately).
I have sucessfully connected my windows machines (tested with using just one PC desktop in one case and 1 laptop in the other case). I got my Dell Windows XP MCE 2005 to connect to my Mac iBook G3 this way, and then when trying to add my new MacBook to my home network, got it to connect to my Win XP Home Desktop. Each time this was done and I "explored the files" on the other system, it was with me using the Windows PC and exploring the Mac.
It just seems a bit more difficult to do from the Mac side of things, and like I said, I have found how to add them to my home network using a different method which should have them visable and active as soon as they (the Macs) are turned on, just like a PC becomes "visable" once turned on.
Others have tried to explain to many people over this forum of how to do this (which all seems strange and not as simple and easy as doing so through windows), but it also seems like there are fewer questions about this networking a Mac at all (even when not adding PCs into the mix) and it just always seems like it is people like me (windows pc users recently turned to mac and wanting to connect them to the same network) and I can't say I have seen one post describing how to connect or create a Mac network with 2+ Macs together, and only a handfull of useful replies on how to add Mac to Windows networks.
I can get back to you more with the different ways (in a few days, need to find where I put the instructions) if others don't respond to your post first with them.
As for the quick, simple connection (which you can "mount" onto your Windows PC just like any other Network location or Disk Drive), I will try and go through it again right now and then respond to my own post here with what steps I took.
The first thing you will want to do is setup on your windows pc, a "home network" giving it a certain name (it usually defaults as "MS HOME" and I would always change it to "HOME", but anything you want to name it is fine). Normally, if you had other Win PCs that you wanted to add, you would just do the same thing with the Create network Wizard (naming the network the same for all PCs you want to be connected), you could probably have multiple "networks" actually, the only pcs that can connect to a certain one are ones that have had this "named" network created on their system. Actually, I think Home (and maybe MCE 2005) users can only have one Network (if you go to add another I think it just changes the previous one to the new network, or maybe it just takes that new network as your "default connect to" network... gets kinda fuzzy unless you know more about multiple networks running at the same time). Windows XP Pro (Professional) is the one that most likely has the best chance at doing this multiple networks thing as it was made for businesses and different "work" networks with more networking options built-in to the OS.
After you have your Windows Home Network setup, then you will want to have both PC and Mac turned on and connected (to your router, they should both be able to access the internet). If you know the individual IP Addresses for each computer system, this could help, and should be found under the Details area of you LAN or WiFI connection (you most likely know how to see both of these in Windows and on your Mac, if not follow the way to your Internet ISP settings and you should stumble upon them).
Will update with more soon...

But it's on the PC right ? So it's a shared network printer with a Spooler (this is how it should be configured using Prnter Setup Utility ...)

Once Disc Utility is launched, select your local hard drive then the [Repair Permissions] button bottom left will light up.

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • Fax Setup Problem: Networked MacBook can't find HP 2160 Fax

I have a recent MacBook Intel Duo OS X (10.4.10) that I have connected to base station via Airport. (Airport Extreme Base station, works fine for everything else) Base station is connected to cable modem (WAN) and Intel iMac is connected to base station via Ethernet cable. Network works fine.
I have an HP 2160 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner connected to base station via USB. I just installed HP's bloated driver package on my Airport networked MacBook.
I can print fine via Airport networked MacBook, but I can't get the MacBook to find the fax (on printer setup) to allow me to send a fax via the HP 2160. The HP 2160 works fine as stand-alone fax (it's hooked up to phone line, has it's own internal fax modem).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Two issues going on at once:
Drivers - OS X has two kinds of drivers; Carbon and CUPS. HP provides Carbon, USB-only drivers with printers that only have a USB connection (Yes, this is different from Windows, where a driver is a driver). Yet the standard comm protocols are provided by CUPS. You need CUPS drivers to use the CUPS network protocols. Search here to see if there's an open source CUPS driver for your model (you may need to find a "similar" model driver):

  • Network drivers no internet wired or wireless

I have a T60 type 2007 and model BE6. I recently have been unable to use my wired or wireless internet on my laptop. I thought it might be a problem with my drivers then. I tried uninstalling them and rolling them back but whenever I click uninstall or rollback driver the window freezes then.
I tried updating my driver then to the latest ones which I got from the website for my wireless and network, and when I updated the drivers it would just keep on going in that window and eventually freeze, and then after I close it, the driver details showed it to be the new driver even though it froze. With the new drivers installed the local area connection would be disabled, and when I try to enable it, it would say connection failed.
When I tried to rollback the drivers it would freeze, but after I opened it up again it would show my old driver information. With the old drivers, my local area connection would be enabled, but still when I try to connect to internet, it says the specified destination is not reachable. Also when I try disabling the wireless or local area connection it doesnt do anything, and when i do repair it freezes.
Also for the drivers when i try to go into the resource tab, that window just freezes.
I do not know if my drivers are updating correctly or not, because it freezes and such. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi mishink7,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum
Because you are having networking problems with both wired and wireless, it seems likely that the problems are caused not by the network device drivers, but by something higher in the network "stack". Did you install or update a firewall, Access Connections, or any other software just before you started having network problems?
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will - Help

Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will without problems.
iphone will connect to base station no problems, I've restored settings and started again but still the same, the iphone picked up the network for the last couple of months, but not now ?

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?

  • Wired/Wirelss network

OK, I have a WRT54G with two XP Desktops connected to the Ethernet ports. I have a Win2000 Pro Laptop connected via wireless. Currently my printer is connected to one of the PC,s but will soon be connected by an Ethernet print server. My question is how do I enable file sharing between the wireless laptop and the wired PC's? I can ping the laptop from the PC's, but cannot access it from "My Network Places". Any help on how to set this up would be appreciated.
    Phil

Yes it is true.  the WRT54G (or any of the wireless routers) have 4 ports on the back for wired PC's or other devices.  If you need more ports you can attach a switch and you can still use the wireless option for what ever wireless devices you have.

  • No longer able to print from wireless MacBook Pro to wired C7280

I originally piggy-backed this onto an existing thread thinking that it was the same issue.  It looks like it was something else now, so I figured I probably ought to spin this off onto its own thread.
    Details:
Printer:  Photosmart C7280 All-in-One, connected to network via Ethernet, IP address 192.168.1.5 (confirmed with Network Menu > View Network Settings > Display Wired Summary)
Router:  Verizon/Actiontec MI424-WR (Verizon FiOS) with
    * Ethernet ports
    * 802.11b and 11g with WPA encryption
Desktop:  iMac with Mac OS 10.5.8, Ethernet connection.  I originally installed the HP software from the CD when we got the 7280 a few years ago, but we've probably upgraded it since then.
My Laptop:  MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.5.8, wireless connection.  I think the HP software was originally downloaded from hp.com (as opposed to the original CD).
Wife's Laptop:  MacBook with Mac OS 10.6.3, wireless connection.  HP software downloaded from hp.com.
We've been able to print from the laptops to the 7280 until several days ago.  After that, anything sent from the laptops stayed on the printer queue without any reaction from the printer, even after the usual tricks (cycling power on printers, holding and unholding jobs, pausing and unpausing printers, etc.)
Our laptops seem to lose the wireless connection a bit more frequently than normal, and at first I thought that was the problem.  Lately, however, I can't get anything to print even when the wireless connection stays solid.  I can print from the iMac, though.
As noted above, my wife's MacBook has 10.6.3, so I'll try the instructions on other threads for uninstalling the HP software and using the built-in 10.6 drivers.  If I can pry the MacBook away from my wife long enough :-)
Meanwhile, I've been trying to troubleshoot my own MacBook Pro.  I can ping 192.168.1.5, and I can pull up the printer's web page by entering "192.168.1.5" in my web browser.
So I followed the instructions here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam e=c01893662&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&c...
(title:  Mac OS X:  Print Jobs are Stuck in the Print Queue and Will Not Print on a Networked Product)
I followed Solution 1 (Delete and readd printer) until I got to steps 7 and 8.  The printer wasn't automatically added to the Printers list, so I clicked the Add button, but wasn't able to select my printer from the list.  Some of the information in Solution 2 seemed to hint that I had a connectivity problem, and suggested that I look for network connectivity solutions.  Unfortunately, all of the network connectivity FAQs referred to Windows-specific utilities, so I decided to uninstall the HP software (using HP Uninstaller).  I downloaded HP_Installer_PSC7200_v9.7.1.dmg from hp.com and ran it, but here's what happened:
At the Select Device step, no devices appeared even though the printer was powered up and on the network.  (As noted earlier, I can ping it.)  I checked "My device is not listed" and clicked Continue; when "Photosmart C7200 series" appeared, I selected it.
At the "Select the Device Connection" subset, I selected "Network." (The "device" in this question is the printer--right?)
I went through the Install step.
No device was listed at the Setup step.  I handled this the same way as the Select Device step ("My device is not listed", Continue, click "Photosmart C7200 series", Continue, select "Network", Continue.
This time, I got this dialog:  "If your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer.  Please visit www.hp.com/support to download an installer, if one is available" even though this was the correct installer for C7200 and Mac 10.5.
Am I overlooking something?  What should I try next?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It appears that the printer is OK and is on the network.  Eventually you may want to set a static IP address for it, but let's get things working first.
The first thing I would try would be to reset the printing system on all the problem Macs:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
If this does not do it there may be something going on with the router.  I have a few ideas if this is required.  Let me know.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Connecting to a wirelss network

I am a newbie to Apple and have the following question:
I am in the process of setting up my Macbook Pro and going through the steps with Set up Assistant. I get to a point where it asks me what wirelss connection I want to use and gives 3 options: 1. Tardis; 2. Weeder; 3. Other.
I am not sure what I should be doing here - at present I have no broadband connection etc.
    What should I be doing?

If you have no broadband connection nor your own wireless network you are probably picking up your neighbours' networks. Just skip to the next page by not setting up any wireless network.

  • How do I configure Guest network to access ethernet wired printer?

I have a wired/wireless network with a new dual band AEBS. The AEBS is connected to a Cisco router, which in turn sends it's connections to various wall-plates in our home. One HP 4110 printer is wired via it's ethernet port, one Mac Mini (OS 10.6.2) is hard wired also. The dual band AEBS 5 GHz network is used for our newer laptops, and the 2.4 GHz network is used for a G3 Firewire PowerBook (now don't make fun... it was the best there was at one time) running OS 10.4.11.
The PowerBook cannot access the printer that is hard wired via ethernet cable to the network. How do I get the PowerBook on the "Guest" network to access the printer?
I tried searching these discussions, but can't find an answer to my specific issue. Any help is appreciated.

Since you have a simultaneous dual-band AEBS, why not connect your PowerBook G3 to the non-Guest 2.4 GHz network created?
Can I take an AEBS that is a couple of years older (I have a couple of the flying saucers around here somewhere), wire that to an available ethernet port on the LAN, and then connect the older PowerBook G3 to that older AEBS wirelessly?
    Sure
If so, will that arrangement slow down the entire system?
    No
If that won't work, and I connect the PowerBook G3 directly to an ethernet port, will that slow down the other wireless computers?
Yes you can connect your PowerBook G3 via Ethernet. That would have no effect on the wireless computers.

  • Can I use a networked Macbook as a storage device?

I am needing to see if my idea will work and need some ideas.
I have a macbook in which the screen became damaged this summer. Everything else is running fine.
I am teaching Journalism and would like to use the macbook as a storage device for my students photos. I teach in a classroom with 14 Windows XP computers and they go to a switch, which in turn goes out to the network & Internet. I would like to plug the Macbook into the switch and have each one of the computers access it for the hard drive storage.
Is this a possibility? If so, does anyone have a website they can guide me to that would have directions on how to do this? I have done a search and the only thing I can find is making a server for your website. So, I am thinking that I must be searching the wrong terminology.
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give.

Let me just tell you how to set it up. On the Mac, do the following:
Go to the Apple Menu, then System Preferences, and select Sharing. Enter a computer name that doesn't have spaces in it for the sake of simplicity. Check the box for File Sharing, then click File Sharing. Click the Options button. Check the box for Share files and folders using SMB. Check the box for your user account, and enter your password. You can now exit System Preferences.
On the Windows PCs, go to Start, then Run, and type \\computername and hit enter. You should see Randy's Public Folder or something like that. Right click it and say "Map Network Drive." Check the box for Reconnect at Login, pick a drive letter and hit Finish. Tada!
So how do you use this? On the PCs, the drive you picked will be the public folder on your Mac. When students open the drive they'll be able to read (only) all the files in the public folder. They can write (only) to the Drop Box folder by dragging documents on top of it.
Now, if you have a PC you want to access this from yourself, you do the same thing but in the Map Network Drive you click the part for connecting as a different user and enter your Mac login credentials. Now you can read and write to the share on only that computer.
Let me know if you have any questions.

    -Ryan

  • Looking for a way to determine wich Network adapters are truly Wired ethernet.

I'm Working on a little app that is going to validate that the machine is connected to a wired network before we allow it to start a re-installation of the operating system. Our wireless net works great for installed systems (they do have a machine certificate)
but we cannot install on it (since the machine must be domain joined to get that cert)
So far I have not found any method that truly tells if the card is a wired network adapter.
Win32_NetworkAdapter:s AdapterTypeID does not work since many wireless adapters report type=0 wich should be wired adapters.
MSNdis_PhysicalMediumType does not work. It returns undefined for a number of adapters
Many posts on the net talks about detecting the connection state wich doesn't work either since it will return the same value for a connected wired adapter and a connected wireless adapter
Other posts suggests using powershell and looking at tha dapter name. That doesn't work if you
got to support a number of languages and what happends if a user renames the interface?
The only way I can make it sort of work is to pipe the output from netsh LAN show interfaces and then do queries on those adapters but I would prefer a soloution in Code.
Since Netsh can do it, there must be a way to do this

The reason for the C code not running under WinPE was user error ........
    Forgot to link it static.
I have been digging around some more and so far the only API that will give us the correct and complete picture seems to be GetIfEntry2, however I can't find dotnet code for it.
It seems like most other methods uses the older GetIfEntry under the hood and that will not give us the true data since many types will report as NDisPhysicalMediumType 0.
However a combination of Win32_network adapter and MSNdis_PhysicalMediumType actually seems to work.
Win32_network filtered on AdapterType='Ethernet 802.3' gives us everything that claims to be an ethernetadapter. That list will however include wireless, bluetooth and some virtual adapters.
MSNdis_PhysicalMediumType filtered on NDisPhysicalMediumType 0 does not show Wireless or Bluetooth but will instead show isatap interfaces and so on.
The Key was to "join" these two on win32_networkadapter.Name to MSNdis_PhysicalMediumType.Instancename giving us the possibility to filter out the unwanted adapters using both methods.
I have made a demoscript that became embarrassing short

    Set colItems_Win32_NetworkAdapter = GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\cimv2").ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_NetworkAdapter where AdapterType='Ethernet 802.3'",,48)

  • Wireless MacBook Pro to wired C7280: Deleted offline printer queue, can't add printer again

I posted about a year and a half ago about connectivity problems with our C7280 all-in-one, and PrintDoc gave me some great suggestions to get me back on line again--thanks again!
I've had problems off-and-on again, but I've been able to get back again until now, and I can't get the usual tricks to work.
    Here's our set-up:
Printer:  Photosmart C7280 All-in-One, connected to network via Ethernet, static IP address 192.168.1.200 (confirmed via printer's display as well as the printer's web page)
Router:  Verizon/Actiontec MI424-WR (Verizon FiOS) with
    * Ethernet ports
    * 802.11b and 11g with WPA encryption
My Laptop:  MacBook Pro, Mac OS 10.6.8, wireless connection
Every now and then, the printer goes off-line.  (Our cordless phones and our WiFi occasionally hit the same channels, and our printer hiccups seem to happen after WiFi hiccups.  My theory is that a WiFi hiccup somehow screws up the print queues, possibly if it happens in the middle of a print job.  Haven't been able to prove it, though.)  I'm usually able to fix it by cycling power on the printer and/or resetting the print system (by right-clicking the list of printers in the Print & Fax window).
That's not working this time.  I reset the print system, but when I try to add a printer, I don't see my printer in the Add Printer dialog.
    I've tried various combinations of:
Cycling power on the printer (sometimes by cycling the power button off and on, sometimes by unplugging the power cord while powered on, and sometimes by unplugging the power cord while powered off)
Resetting the print system again (sometimes by itself, sometimes followed by log off/on, sometimes followed by reboot)
Powering down the Mac, then the printer, then the router, then powering them back up in reverse order.
But I still can't see my printer in the Add Printer dialog.
Somewhere along the way, I tried following the Mac OS 10.6-10.7 instructions from here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02205477&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3204785#N86...
...but Solution 1 assumes that the printer queue is still there; unfortunately, I'd already reset the print system by then.
Since I'm using OS 10.6 which already has the printer drivers built in, I'm assuming that I can't uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers as in older versions of Mac OS X.  (Er, right?)
The long-term solution (if my theory is right) is to get cordless phones that don't use the WiFi frequencies :-)  In the meantime, are there any tricks I'm missing?

Today I tried to "add printer" again...and lo and behold, there it was!
I wish I could tell you what fixed the problem, but I haven't got a clue.
