Wireshark dependency causing system upgrade problem

:: wireshark: requires heimdal>=1.2.1
I checked to see what version of heimdal is available to install with "pacman -Si", and the current version is 1.2-2, which is lower than what wireshark requires. Do I have to wait until heimdal 1.2.1 is pushed into the repos before I can update my system, or is there another solution?
Xyne wrote:There's no nasty tone to this question, I'm just curious: Why do packages get moved to the official repos before their dependencies are ready? Doesn't that just create problems for upgrades and prevent users who might need to install the package in that little window of dependency hell? What's the reasoning? Is it just for the packager's convenience?
What happened here was that in the testing repo there were packages rebuilt for libpcap and packages rebuilt against heimdal. However, wireshark was rebuilt against both libpcap and heimdal. Because of an oversight, the libpcap rebuild was moved out of testing without realizing that wireshark depended on the heimdal wich was still in testing. We try to avoid these missing dependency problems but sometime mistakes are made.
Xyne wrote:Follow-up question: Would it be possible (read: reasonable) to create some pkg queue system that moves ready packages into the official repos once their dependencies are solved?
I'm not sure if it's possible as packages are moved manually.
When there are library soname bump, we rebuild all packages that needs it to the best of our knowledge but it can happen that we forget a few. Sometime the package that needs to be rebuilt doesn't have the dependency listed, especially when it comes to dependencies on core packages, so we miss it. In this case, a queue system would do nothing. We just need users to report them on the bug tracker

IPad 2 operating system upgrade problems
I have an iPad 2 (version 4.3.3). After problems with facetime I am trying to upgrade my version using iTunes. I've synced with iTunes, clicked on 'device', selected 'summary' tab. Next to 'update' button it says a newer version of the iPad software is available (version7.1.2) but when I click the Update button I get a message saying 'This version of iTunes (10.6.3) is the current version". How do I get iTunes to update the operating system on my iPad 2 rather than just the version of iTunes?
If you have an older version of iTunes, then you're basically locked out to use it unless you update it first. Then after that, you can update your iPad.

The system upgrade problem: NOW all my apps are gone
The same problem I'm seeing other people discussing, the screen has the iTunes hookup graphic. I hooked it up to my mothership iMac, it forced me through some restore iPad process, which FINALLY worked. And now the iPad has not one of the dozens of apps we've installed in the last 7 months.
AnyI had the same problem. It's really aggravating. I don't know what is going on. Some info was saved after restore, but my apps and music was gone. I did sync-before my restore. What a big headache! The only reason I did a restore in the first place is because none of me apps would open.I had to restore, then one problem became another....I lost my apps and music. Now I have to view my "purchase history" to get my stuff back.

Checked the news and theads on here and not seen anyone with simular problems so I'm really not quite sure how to tackle this one...sorry, i should have added a bit more detail about my setup:
it's an ASUS X51RL-series laptop. It has an ATI radeon xpress 1100 GFX chip.
I'm running KDE4 + compiz-fusion
I'm guessing the problem is related to the xorg upgrade? Beyond that I'm not sure how best to address the dependances. -
I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do? I am on OS X Yosemite.
Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
Step 4
Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
Potential sources of interference
Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC). -
[SOLVED] Boot problems after system upgrade
hi everybody,
first of all i have to say, that the machine where i installed Arch is pretty old (something around 5 years).
I already tried installing Arch two times and every time after i performed a system upgrade, i couldn't boot arch.
Before the upgrade i rebooted several times to ensure that its working with the brand new installation - it worked.
Here i'm the 3rd try. This time i configured packman to ignore the kernel package and voila its working now with kernel 2.6.25.6-1.
So, here is my question: Is there any problem that could appear later on if i never upgrade the kernel?
I'm quite new to linux and really appreciate your support.
Regards
Daniel
Last edited by mrorange (2010-02-25 21:35:32)Well ... the kernel, like any other piece of program, from time to time has to be patched if they find a bug in it.
Never upgrading means that you do not get the benefit of security and improvements patches.
There is also the issue that some programs, a few, may want to have a certain kernel to run but I think that is less common.
I, for instance, have not upgraded the kernel for a few months now because it screws up my wifi.
If you can live with that then you are OK.

[SOLVED] System upgrade broke pm-resume (kernel problem?)
It now seems every other time I suspend to RAM, it fails to come back. I just get a blank screen, no backlight, with a completely unresponsive keyboard. At this point, the only thing I do that has any effect is a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. I had no problems before I upgraded on April 10. I didn't post this immediately because I wanted to see if the new xorg-server and associated updates would fix it, but it didn't.
Here is pm-suspend.log:

Last edited by Lux Perpetua (2009-07-08 04:20:11)Hi there. Me here with the same problem. Well I think it to be so...
I can not suspend/resume for the second time - when I resume the backlight turns on, but the suspend LED is not turned off, HDD works, CPU, fans work. My computer is Thinkpad T43p. And older kernel does solve the problems.
I am considering one more issue about this problem is that the drivers may conflict with the newest kernel (for example my opensource ati drivers). Any suggestions?
By the way, if someone needs older packages, you can use 'Arch Rollback Machine' (ARM - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53665) -
Sony Xperia system upgrade causes BT email issue
My Sony Xperia mobile phone has just had a system upgrade and now my BT emails are coming up corrupted on it. I contacted my phone provider who tells me BT has changed their popbox codes and I need to go on to my account and enable it for mobile devices. I have had a look with no luck. Any suggestions please.
I have had this exact experience with my Sony Xperia M2 Aqua phone after downloading new system software about 2 weeks ago. My husband and I have the same type of phones and share the same email account. Fortunately he did not update his phone with the latest Sony software. He still has the previous version on his phone and he has had no problems at all.
I have had little joy with Sony other than to ask me to send them screenshots of the problem, to take off and reload my btinternet email account, and to use PC Companion to repair/reload the software. I have done all they ask but to no avail as problem is still the same after doing everything they suggest. They are extremely loathe to accept that the problem stemmed from their software update but are now referring it to a technical department to investigate. Sony say that I can't revert to previous version either as a solution as they can't downgrade a phone again after upgrade had been installed.
I would welcome any suggestions or advice to fix the problem if anyone can help. -

System Upgrade /lib Problems on Raspberry Pi
I have downloaded the latest Arch Linux Arm image from Arch Linux Arm and flashed it onto my Raspberry Pi. I'm trying to do a system upgrade, but I'm getting stuck trying to work around the /lib folder move.

(SOLVED) Virtualbox 2.2 pervents system upgrade
There doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall VirtualBox 2.2 PUEL which I installed from the Sun site. Now I can't upgrade my system. I get the following error:
bash-3.2# pacman -Syu --ignore virtualbox-modules
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
:: Replace libxml++2 with extra/libxml++? [Y/n]

warning: xorg-server will be installed before its nvidia-utils dependency
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: virtualbox-modules: requires kernel26<2.6.29
VirtualBox is pretty much a toy to me, I'd rather just get rid of it if it's going to cause problems with maintaining my system.
Last edited by mooreted (2009-04-11 06:13:42)wonder wrote:--ignore virtual-modules will not do a thing because there is no update for that package. you have that error because that packages _HAS_ as dependency kernel 2.6.28.
if is a toy remove it and install virtualbox_bin for aur
pacman -Rns virtualbox-ose virtualbox-modules
I haven't found a way to remove it. I guess I can find everything name "VirtualBox" or "virtualbox" and delete them all. -
GNOME messed up after system upgrade
My Gnome desktop got messed up today after a system upgrade. After login, all the things seems to become square-shaped and misplaced (like this)
I tried to downgrade some package that may be relevant, but none works. After upgrading them back again, I (accidentally) found that everything will become back to normal if I relaunch Gnome Shell (Alt+F2 then r).
Any ideas about what's the problem?

I have the same issue; but it can be fixed by alt+f2 > r (to reload the shell). Unfortunately it is broken again after a reboot. This is not caused by nvidia, I use intel_drv
I found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=178088 and tried that but that didn't fix it for me
That didn't fix it for me, either. Only alt+f2 > r can help. But relaunching shell every time upon startup is somewhat annoying.
The interesting thing here is that the problem happens after the upgrade but I can't find which of the package actually cause it. I tried downgrading nvidia, webkitgtk, even systemd, none of these fixed it and the other packages all seem irrelevant.

[SOLVED] Xorg terminates after system upgrade

I upgraded old installation of Arch yesterday (about one year old) and now Xorg fails to load up. I don't really know where to look for issues... I think its graphic card but I'm not sure...

I am having issues with my Window 7 on boot camp. My hardware is Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model and working on OS X 10.9.5. Recently I went to windows 7 to do a system upgrade but failed and was told to update the bootcamp drivers. I installed boot camp5 but seem to be the wrong version and change to boot camp 4 which was updated okay. However I still cannot do the updates. Can someone advice me please? Thank you!
Please see Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support for the appropriate version of drivers related to the specific version of Windows 7.

Be careful with Windows Updates, especially driver updates. Standard WHQL drivers can cause problems.
