Wiring an ethernet wall socket for BT Broadband co...

I have fitted a double RJ45 socket on either side of the room. (One for HUB to vision box adn one for TV internet) I want to use patch cables to plug one end to vision box and other to Hub5.  I used the 2 pair (orange/orange &white and blue/ Blue&white) long ethernet cables supplied by BT. I used the BT cable instead of cat 5 because it had a low profile to fit under flooring and I had 2 long cables spare.  I've cut RJ45s off and have tried to connect using the colour coding diagrams on back of each socket with no luck. (on A or B scheme)   I am using a propper tool.    Where do I put the four wires on the socket?  Thanks in advance.

Thanks - I have run wo cables but each only has 2 pairs in.  Looking at the rj45 that was connected on either end only 4 pins are used on the long cable BT supply with the hub.  So I intend to use one socket for BT vision box and the other for smart TV.... I dont know which connections to use on the socket though.
The plug at each end of the BT ethernet lead is wired Pin 1 OW pin 2 O pin 3 BW and pin 6 B.

  • Have to use TEST socket for fast broadband but ext...

Hi, this is my first post, would be very grateful for any help as I am getting nowhere fast with BT.
Have had broadband here for several years without too much problem until recent months when the speed seemed to be getting slower and slower. I contacted BT on several occasions about this, and tested the equipment, with the upshot that connection is definitely faster IF the phone etc is plugged into the TEST SOCKET. Hurray for that - BUT it means that my (only) extension line upstairs in my house doesn't work (I've tried plugging two different corded phones in, with filters, and there is no dialling tone).
This is really inconvenient and I have contacted BT yet again this morning to be told the same thing, ie test the equipment and it is probably an internal wiring problem. What they don't seem to take on board is that the extension line was fine for ages until I started using the test socket.
    Help someone please! Thank you.

    Hi ConfusedofSurrey and welcome
Is the extension lead exposed or has it been run under floorboards?
Phone wiring has a Bellwire. This makes the old style phones ring. Modern day phones don't need this wire and it WILL slow your connection down. Have a look at http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/bellwirenutshell.html
Also any extensions WON'T work if you've removed the face plate from the master socket to use the test point as it isolates any other extension wiring.
    Hope this helps.

Yes, it is one of the things AirPort Express was specifically designed for.

Is it normal for someone to have general diffuculty charging an ipad?  I see the "not charging" message even when I am using the charger and cord that came in the original box, plugged into a wall socket directly.  It is normal for me to plug it in overnight and to see no charge whatsoever the next day.  I have never had so much trouble using a friggin charger in my life.  It just seems to be exceedingly finicky.  What am I missing?

Charging your iPad should not be problematic. It should be an easy thing to do using the charger provided with your iPad connected to a known good wall outlet.
The charging problem you are experiencing is most like caused by:
    1. A faulty charger
    2. A faulty cable
    3. A bad wall outlet
    4. A problem in the iPad.
The first three of these are easiest to eliminate. Try a for ends charger and cable. Make absolutely sure your outlet is good. Try other outlets.
If the charger, cable and outlet a proven to be good then the problem lies in the iPad.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

iphone only shows logo for 13 seconds when connected to pc thats all it does however i connected to wall socket, it goes up to connect to itunes but when i unplug it then it switches off.
this is coincidently after an ios update for iphone which i did just approx two days earlier which was suppused to fix battery issues?
also battery shows 100 percent full but as i explained if disconected from socket it switches off altogether.

Hopefully and most likely faulty battery. If you have Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • Iphone 4 just turned itself off, won't turn on again - sleep/wake button hasn't worked for a while - tried charging (even though it was 50% charged when it shut down) and that makes no difference....tried usb to computer and directo to wall socket. help?

phone 4 just turned itself off, won't turn on again - sleep/wake button hasn't worked for a while - tried charging (even though it was 50% charged when it shut down) and that makes no difference....either via usb to computer and direct to wall socket. Any suggestions...other than heading off to the genius bar tomorrow?

Well, the sleep/wake button is also the power button. If you cannot use it to turn on, then you cannot use it to perform a reset by holding it and the home button together until you see the Apple logo. Those are the only two ways to turn the device on. You can try letting the battery go completely dead and then trying to plug it in. After it has charged for 20-30 minutes, the device may come back on. But, without the sleep/wake button, there is no other way to turn the device on or off.

  • I bought a MacBook Air which includes a puzzling cord.  It plugs into a wall socket at one end, but the other end looks like a miniature hair dryer.  Does anyone know what this is for?cord

I bought a MacBook Air which includes a puzzling cord.  It appears to be for charging the Mac.  It has three prongs where it plugs into the wall socket, but at the other end there is something that looks like a miniature old-style hairdryer.  It doesn't fit anywhere on the MacBook Air.  It is approximately 1 cubic inch in size.  Sort of looks like a miniature building with two joined smokestacks.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi, I think you are talking about the extension cord for the MagSafe power adapter.
This you can plug it to the MagSafe adapter in order to get a longer cable, but first you have to slide to disconnect the wall connector from the adapter and get this:
I'm sure you will get it once you slide the socket connector from the adapter. NOTE: you have to slide the  little socket connector from the adapter, DON'T PULL IT OFF. Is easy to slide.
Hope this is the answer for your question. If I'm wrong, please put an image of the "puzzling cord".

  • Cannot find BT master socket to test broadband

House is less than 18months old and had all phone sockets installed prior to moving in as first occupants. BT line connected after 2weeks. Engineer did not enter house. Now have problem with broadband and have been told I need to connect the router to the BT master socket for test purposes but cannot find one! All internal sockets are standard phone sockets.
BT line comes up from ground outside on front wall near door in a BT 'Openreach' box which is a flip-down, secured by a screw. On opening this the BTincoming  connection is sealed, then there is a plug, which if removed disconnects the internal lines. Then there is a connector to which the blue/white/orange leads coming out from through wall from inside the house (white covered cable) are connected. The other side of this wall is underneath the built-in kitchen units and has no master socket anywhere.
Have been banging my head trying to explain to ISP that I cannot connect to a master socket as cant find one. Should I have one or is the outside box all I get? If so, how do I connect the computer to the (6 pin) socket outside?

New build properties are now being fitted with a new Network Terminating Equipment box, the XNTE, instead of the previous NTE5 master socket. This is fitted outside the property and BT responsibility ends at the XNTE. This is the box you referred to with the flip-down cover. It contains all the master socket components. The socket in the XNTE is a BT test point and requires a special plug - it is for BT use only.
In order to eliminate your internal wiring you would need to connect a standard slave socket at the XNTE in place of the white covered cable. Make a note of the way the existing cable is connected. The official connections are pin 2 - Blue, 3 - Brown, 4 - green, 5 - Orange.

  • Trying to connect Sony Blu Ray player to MI424WR router wired through in-wall connection, help!

Maybe someone can help me. My house has some pre-wired cat5e plugs in the walls. I have my MI424WR router upstairs and my Sony blu ray player downstairs. I first connected the router and blu ray player to the wall with cat5e cables, no luck. I then tried using a cat5e crossover cable from the router to the wall, no luck. The Sony blu ray player has everything set to auto, but do I need to configure something? Can someone help me figure out what is not working? Thank you.

    AEConfidential wrote:
Shouldn't the wiring in the wall act like a hub with the router plugged into one wall jack?
No.  cat5 wiring doesn't work that way.  Unlike phone wiring where all the wires are connected together, cat5 wiring connects point-to-point between two Ethernet devices.  You need a continuous cat5 path from the blu-ray player to the router.  The patch panel merely provides a termination point for each cable.
The easiest thing to do to get this working is to take a cat5 patch cord and use it as a jumper from the jack going to the blu-ray player and the jack going to the Actiontec router.  That will give you a continuous connection between the two devices.
Longer term, if you want to add devices in other rooms that have a cat5 cable, you will need to add a switch as viafax999 suggested.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_switch
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=30&Tpk=ethernet%20switch&Order=PRICE
You will need to connect the jack going to the Actiontec router as well as the jack going to each room where you want an Ethernet connection to the switch.  The number of rooms you want active will determine how many ports you need on the switch.

  • My iPod Touch will no longer charge from a wall socket, only my computer. HELP!

My 4th generation iPod Touch will no longer charge from a wall socket, only my computer. I tried buying a new cable and USB charging socket (and I bought one made by Apple), but that did not fix the problem. I restored it from iTunes, hoping that would work as well, but that failed. I am at my wit's end. Can anybody here help me? I've bought new equipment, tried rebooting, restoring, etc. but nothing so far has proven successful. If anyone's got a solution, please help!
    Thanks!

All I can suggest is the standared fixes. It seems very strange
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Bring the cable and Apple wall charger too.

  • How do I use a 2nd Airport Extreme plugged into an Ethernet Wall Plug to join an existing wireless network to give me a better signal upstairs?

I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme giving me a great wireless signal on the 1st floor of my house. However the signal upstairs is weak. So I purchased another 5th generation Airport Extreme that I would like to plug into an ethernet wall plug upstairs. I would then like to have the upstairs Airport Extreme join the same network thus giving me a good wirelss signal upstairs. I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.4. Can somebody give me step-by-step directions to set up the upstairs Airport Extreme?

I assume that the new AirPort Extreme is still in its original factory default settings.
Before you connect the AirPort Extreme, please connect a laptop to the Ethernet cable that will be used for the connection and turn off the wireless on the laptop. Make sure that you can can connect to the Internet before you begin to configure the AirPort Extreme.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the laptop and connect it to the WAN "O" port on the upstairs AirPort Extreme and power it up.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 6.1
Look in the upper left hand corner of the screen for a tab or box that reads "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on that box, then click on the name AirPort Extreme xxxxxx
Wait a moment while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and then displays a message that the AirPort Extreme will be configured to extend your existing wireless network.
Enter a Base Station (device) name for the AirPort Extreme (and a device password if prompted), then click Next.
Wait another minute or two until AirPort Utility notifies you that the AirPort Extreme has been Set Up.
    That's it.

Sounds like the charging cable is OK but the charger itself may have failed. Do you have another you can try - or perhaps borrow one for testing purposes?

  • Ipod wont charge on a wall socket-will only charge a little from USB.

    Dear Apple,
    I have a 160gb ipod model which i bought 3 months ago.
Recently my ipod has stopped charging from a wall socket completely.I ve been using the apple wall charger for a time so i know its not its fault.Further on i have tried another third company's usb wall charger and 2 different cables.Nothing seems to work.Afterwards i tried charging it on a PC and it worked the first time but after that i leave it charging for 2-4 hours and it only shows 1/2 of the battery getting charged which will go down to 1/3,1/4th as soon as i plug it off.I ve tried resetting it multiple times but to no avail. I know that there have been other cases such as mine and i have tried researching it in the forums but with no sure solution. Please advise as to how i should proceed.Thank you in advance

Well ok news flash.I went outside to an internet cafe and put it in normally in a usb and after 2 hours it charged fully and lasted fully for the battery time. This still doesnt explain though why when i used two different cables and two different wall chargers it wouldnt charge when it used to.(P.S.: I am in an army camp thus the reason i cant rely on a PC socket being available)Thanks in advance
