Wish data allowances could be bigger:

While I'm not a fan of data allowances, I currently live in an area where the only alternative would be Hughes.net satellite or dial-up, so Verizon Homefusion broadband was the best choice.
Hughes.net gave good speeds but was inconsistant and there was considerable lag for the signal to go up to the satellite and back, so online gaming was out of the question. I cancelled the service after a month and found out about Verizon's option. We had to switch to Verizon on our cell phones due to no other reliable coverage in the area, so at least it is all under the same umbrella now.
One thing I would like to see is the data allowance tiers offering more gigs per month. I had to cancel Netflix because I'm sure it would have ate up most of the allowance. I noticed in Texas (I'm in Ohio.), that Comcast offers 300gb a month option for a decent cost! Of course, that is cable and we're talking the 4G celluar network here, but really with the mass amount of data being pushed through, 10, 20, 30gb is not enough.
Every month I get close to my cap without going over, but I don't stream movies or music or anything, so I have no idea where the data is coming from.
Anyway, I hope that Verizon will either get rid of data allowances altogether (which with laws being drafted now, they may have to), or offer a lot bigger options and not charge an arm and a leg for it.

Mobile data bandwidth is extremely limited. If say Verizon had a 300 GB cap and everyone in your area signed up for Verizon you would all complain about slow service since you'd have a lot of people all trying to stream video and the network could not handle that. 30 people trying to watch Netflix would use up all the bandwidth on a tower sector. In addition to other potential Homefusion users Verizon uses the same frequencies for cell phone data. I suppose if Homefusion used it's own frequencies the caps could be higher. I also suspect once Verizon kills off unlimited data or at least get the number of unlimited data users down significantly and has AWS enabled everywhere caps will probably go up.
It sucks that cable and telco refuse to expand internet to you area that's not really Verizon's responsibility to pick up their slack. Maybe you should ask you local government that you pay taxes to why they can't get cable or telco to offer service in your area.
Also there are no laws being drafted to force Verizon to offer higher caps.

When I want to scroll through My pictures  why do I get this Error message (A necessary data reference could not be resolved)

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Iphoto .MOV issue - "a necessary data reference could not be resolved" when opening certain videos

I have recently perchaced a brand new Mac Book Pro. The apple store very kindly tranfered everything from my old Mac Book to my new Mac Book Pro. I keep my iphoto library on and external hardrive, which seems to be working fine since I moved everything. BUT..."some' movies won't play from my iphoto library and a window appears saying "a necessary data reference could not be resolved". I can find these videos when I search for them in finder manually (I backed everything up before I transfered everything into a file called TEMP VIDEOS), but why can't my iphoto application find them, like it used to...it still still should right!? Very frustrating.
    Please help..
    Thanks

Actually this happened to me today and although it would not let me play the file it allowed me to use that same file i had exported from iphotos but could not play and then it allowed me to open it in imovie (you can go to import and then get it from the desktop or wherever) although I made a couple of changes to it the main thing is once you drag it into the space to begin a new project you can then right click and select open in finder and that file actually plays......if its cause i made some changes to it i.e trimmed it slightly then its worth doing so.

  • Unexplained 02 Data Allowance Drain at Midnight

Hi all. I don't think I've ever had reason to post on here before so I'm hoping that, perhaps, some of you knowledgable lot might be able to help me.
I've had an iPhone on 02 (UK) since they first came out and with each year have upgraded to the latest model. I've had the iPhone 4 since July last year.
I know that recently 02 reduced their "Unlimited" data allowance to 500MB. This never really caused me concern because I never really used data apart from when I was at home over Wi-Fi. Recently, however, I've received a text message saying that I was 80% through my 500MB allowance. I thought this a bit strange but paid an extra £5 for 500MB more to cover me for the rest of the month.
Now, tonight, curious about what I had done differently to accrue such a large use of my data allowance, I checked my bill. It seems that every evening, normally around midnight, I have a large data usage. Now, previously, I'd guessed that the data usage accrued throughout the day was submitted to 02 in one large chunk. However, on the 26th April I used 340MB of my 500MB data allowance, and the next day used a further 180MB!
I couldn't understand where this had come from; I do not live-stream TV or radio over 3G. I don't even do that over Wi-Fi! I don't download anything over 3G. Whilst I'm at work and whilst I'm at home I'm under a Wi-Fi connection. The only data allowance I might use is a quick check of Facebook for 5 minutes before I walk into work in a morning.
Now, on the two days that I've accrued these massive data usages, I made several Facetime calls to my partner who was away training for a new job. This is the only thing that I've done differently. I thought that Facetime usage came out of your Wi-Fi and NOT your data allowance.
Anyway, through 02's website, they offer a chat service with their online representatives. I used this service to talk to someone who, I had hoped, might have been able to help. Now through subsequent phone calls to 02 I have actually learnt that much of what this person told me is untrue but here is what i was told.
Facetime calls are chargeable. The person later corrected herself on this.
Facetime calls will start via Wi-Fi but if, for whatever reason, connection is lost, Facetime will be maintained via 3G; "If some time the Wi-Fi get discoonected you connected to 3G for the beter responce" 02's representative explained.I don't think that this is true but it might explain my massive data use; the call was about an hour long. Having said that, how do iPod Touches maintain their connection; I've got a 4G Touch and despite using it for the occasional Facetime call, have never had a problem.
Facetime depletes your data allowanceI thought that the fact that Facetime is done over Wi-Fi means that it would be deducted from the unlimited Wi-Fi allowance and NOT the 3G/data allowance.
The person then seemingly contradicted herself by saying that Facetime calls made over Wi-Fi are completely at Internet Service Provider's costing & discretion. The lady explained: "I'm sorry for this but the Facetime is work on Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi service providers are different"
The person told me to delete Facetime so as to better conserve my data allowance if I needed to make it last!I don't think this is even possible. I explained this and she then said "No, don't delete Facetime".
After that I think I was even more concerned than when I started!!
At this point the lady offered me a £2 credit against my account, which whilst appreciated, doesn't really solve the problem. She gave me 02's iPhone Technical Support line (2302) as it was a "technical issue".
Now, having rung 02 and explained the situation, they explained that whilst Facetime wasn't strictly chargeable, it does still come off your data allowance. However, if you exceed your 500MB data allowance, you do not get charged any more, the level of service is simply a "bit slower". In essence, it was explained, the Facetime calls hadn't cost me anything.
I explained that whilst the calls weren't costing me anything in themselves, I was still having to pay extra to maintain the same service-level that I had previously experienced. The lady agreed with what I was saying and said that she would consult with two different departments to see if she could trace what the large data-usages originated from.
The lady returned and explained that, further to her discussions with other departments, Facetime couldn't possibly be the result of the data usage. She said that it had to be TV/Radio streaming. I know categorically that the only thing that I used my iPhone for that night was the Facetime calls. I don't stream any content at all! For viewing of any content I use a TV or, for iPlayer, my PS3 or iPad, but never my iPhone!
I stressed this to the lady that it could only be the Facetime and she denied that it could be. She went back to her department and checked again. Upon her return she asked what time I had made the Facetime calls (which were around 8pm). Having explained this she said that the data usage occurred at 00:00:00  and that as such it could not have been the Facetime calls. I know that Facetime calls can't be done over 3G so I can see the point that she's making but what else could it be?? And at that time??
I looked at the bill myself and pointed out that at 00:00:00 almost every night I had a data-usage, not just on the nights in question. I said that having already noticed this previously, I assumed that the iPhone simply submitted the total data-usage in one go and not just as-and-when. The lady said that data would be submitted as it was used and that, with neither party able to explain the usage, it must be down to a third-party using my data allowance remotely from the phone overnight.
I don't think that data is shown on the bill as and when it was used because on occasions when I know I've used 3G, no mention is made on the bill.
Now my partner has 02 and we had checked that bill to see whether he had a massive data usage which corresponded to mine, which he didn't. He has data usages at midnight most-nights but for the Facetime calls (some of which were made by him) he has no excessive data usage.
I've searched via Google and found various other people on various other networks who have the same mysterious midnight data-usages.
Still on the phone with the poor lady from 02 I pointed this out, which she couldn't really answer. She said that she was contacting a Security department who could directly check what the content related to and that she would get back to me within 5 days, which, with the current Bank Holidays in the UK, is likely to be a week on Tuesday. She remains adamant that my iPhone is being accessed remotely, or "is being updated by third-party apps" which, with the number of people having similar midnight data issues, I doubt.
I know this has turned out to be a mammoth post, and for that I'm sorry, but has anyone else had similar experiences? How have they been resolved?
Does Facetime get taken off your data allowance? One person from 02 says yes, another says no.
Finally what could the two massive data-usages relate to, if not Facetime? I know that there's likely no way to prove that I wasn't streaming TV/radio content but I can say with absolute certainty that no such feature was used.
We had used the GPS for hiking one day in the month but my usage for that particular day in question was only about 30MB so I've ruled that out.
The icing on the cake was that at the end of the conversation, when it was explained that all that could be done was wait for the Security department to get back in touch, the lady asked me "What are iPhones like then? Mine's been delivered today and is waiting for me at home."
Suffice to say I was shocked almost speechless. Almost anyway...
I've got her line & extension number so in the event that she doesn't bother to call me back, I can call her.
Hope you can offer some insight though!!
    J.

I don't know if anyone reads these but having been in touch with 02, I honestly don't think that they've got a clue. I was told that it was iTunes auto-updating in the background which has caused the massive data-usages, despite the fact that the phone was at home under my Wi-Fi connection.
I was told that I needed to turn off auto-updates. I said that I didn't think that this could be done on iPhones but the 02 representative explained:
Go to iTunes>"Preferences">"General" and slide the toggle which reads"Check for New Updates Automatically"
The representative said that this would solve my problem. However, somewhat dubious of 02's responses so far, I got my partner's iPhone and asked the rep to walk me through the steps. Lo and behold, none of the above options are given under iTunes - nor could I find them in Settings for that matter.
Querying this with the rep, he put me on hold before reporting back that the iPhone 4 'does not support that feature' - only other iPhone models do. Now I don't have a 3GS or other model to hand but I can't ever remember seeing such options bearing in mind that I've owned each iPhone generation - Can anyone else corroborate this?
I was passed onto someone who was presumably more senior but ultimately no less knowledgeable. This person said that my contract was still running (despite what his colleague had previously said) and could not be cancelled. I said that Three offered better tariffs and I would likely go there. He said Three don't offer you free Wi-Fi like 02 do. He praised the benefits of BT Openzone, which, by the way I've never ever been able to access. When I confronted him with this he admitted that he too could seldom get on BT Openzone!
Honestly, it's laughable! Needless to say I shalln't be renewing with 02. And when it came down to what the mysterious data usage was, he said he didn't know, there was no way of knowing (despite the other lady saying that the security department could find out exactly what had been viewed) and it was just "one of those things." I would advise anyone on 02 to check their data bills very carefully from now on!
The icing on the cake was that the senior rep denied that any of the information I'd been given was contradictory!
    Extremely disappointed and frustrated!

  • Transfer data allowance from one phone to another?

Hi Guys, This is my first post (ever). I've just recently switched to a Telstra Plan and I've run into my 1GB data usage limit. Which is fair enough. However one of my collegues has a 20GB data usage limit that he never comes close to fully using. Is there any way currently (or could there be in the future) where he could transfer some of his allowance to my phone? I've seen the thread regarding adding shared data to consumer plans - and I think that's great and definately a step in the right direction. Actually, seeing how people have acted on that has encouraged me to post this (and hopefully I can get a similar result). I know people transfer credit between phones - so why not data allowance? Thanks in Advance!

See that's no help at all - and feels like you're delibertly avoiding my point and misdirecting me (with a smile) down a path I want to avoid. Its actually not very helpful to simply sound helpful and avoid the issue. Personally, I'd prefer a straight "No, thats not possible." with possibly "Here's why its not possible.". That has more honesty and integrity. I do appreciate you taking the time to reply - but an answer like that is wasting both of our time. I suspect you'd agree privately. Now, I'm trying to be helpful and give you feedback (on my own time) about features I would like to have - and given that there's been almost 10k views on the orginal email - I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that your other customers might be interested in this feature too. I don't want a datapack. Between myself and my wife, we're already paying for 7gb of data. I just want to pool that allowance between us. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it? Now you can tell me No (which is fine). Maybe you can tell me why (which would be great). You could tell me you're taking it seriously and working on bringing it to market (which would be fantastic). But please don't tell me to spend more money on a datapack.

  • Is it possible that my Extreme and Expresses are draining monthly data allowance?

I hope someone can answer this, as I'm having a real issue with brand new installations of satellite internet.  We have a 10GB/mo allowance on the accounts, and on one of the accounts that feeds a main house, I have 1 new Extreme and 3 new Expresses to try and grab the signal in bedrooms.  The house is and has been empty since installation of the very first month, yet according to the provider, we have used almost all of the data allowance for the month.
There is no computer equipment in the house that could be "updating" automatically or iClouding or anything like that.  It is a closed large house, that no one goes in but me periodically to check on until it will be occupied in Oct.  The satellite company is trying to look at what is happening but they are not well versed in Apple routers and wanted me to ask if its possible that the Extreme and Expresses are doing something in updating or communicating with each other that would drain the usage by "talking" or "downloading" or accesing the internet.
    Thanks!

I'm certain.  This is a large farm estate and I installed 4 separate accounts in 4 separate locations.  The one that gets 24/7 usage in the office with 1 PC, an airbook and iPhone (and I never shut down the PC at night so its always online) used 7GB in a month.  This uses a Time Capsule but stands alone and doesn't communicate with any other router.  Another system is at the pool house area and also uses and Extreme but doesn't link to anything else (no Express)  This has also been an empty building as no people are in residence until Oct.  It used only .2GB in a month (bear in mind I speed tested and looked at YouTube to check the speed).
This is why it was stunning that the main house with basically the same set up as the Pool House and no people used 8.5GB.  The only thing different is that it is communicating with 3 Expresses in that building.
I'm fast realizing 10GB a month is meager compared to what most people are used to, but this is all that is available.  We have been used to having only landline DSL at a rate of 756k-1MB and no cell service, so people will be thrilled if we have enough speed to see a YouTube video.  Because of our situation no one has ever used the web for gaming or Netflix or anything like that - it was impossible.  People just want to be able to do what I do in the office - email, check the web for news.  My boss does like Skype, but he doesn't hang on it.  His Skype calls last about 1 minute (LOL!) and he may do that once a day to our Europe office when he is in residence, but the majority of the time the place is empty, so I'm hoping this will suffice.
Thanks!  You have basically answered what we needed to know - the Extreme and Express aren't doing anything extraordinary that would cause a massive drain of GB.  Have a wonderful weekend!

    * also i saw this comment on another forum but no comments after it.
(I had the same problem and managed to fix it as follows: I found that I had two Library folders, one in Macintosh HD, one in my User folder. Each Library folder contained a folder for Internet Plug-Ins. I moved the files QuickTime Plugin.plugin and QuickTime Plugin.webplugin from the Macointosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins to User folder/Library/Internet Plug-Ins, and that fixed it.
Not sure why there are two Library folders, but QuickTime installation seems to have put the plug-ins into the wrong one, and that was the problem)
has anyone else encountered this problem or have any ideas on the cause or the fix?
i have done all that can with my limited capabilities and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you

  • Ios5 screwing up text messages and data allowances

    Hi,
using ios5 on my old iphone 4, and when iCloud came out, I pressed "download all", set the phone down and went to sleep. Somehow in the middle of the night, the phone went off the wifi and on the data network and went on it's merry downloading way. there is not an infuriated enough smilie to show what my face looked like when I woke up the next morning to a ''hey. you are 358 MB over your monthly data allowance!'' on the 13th of the month when my phone plan starts on the 5th of the month...
    a) is there any way for the stores/icloud make you confirm you wanna keep downloading if you somehow get off a wifi network, so that BS like this doesn't happen again? I know you can't download anything over 20mb over the data network, but as very few song if any are over 20mb, then apparently no alarm went off and it kept downloading thru the effing night. There has got to be a way for this not to happen without having to look at the phone while it's downloading anything from iCloud/stores?
and b) after that $hit happened, i turned off data so to limit the $$$ on my next bill, but now I`''learned'' on facebook that apparently, with ios5, text messages aren,t really text messages anymore, but are iMessages and go out/in the data plan? Is there any truth to that? If it is so, then what the effing **** again? and how do I turn it back to sms so that it's deducted out of the illimited text messages part of my plan and not out of my already-way-over-used data allowance?
FWIW, I've still been using text messages since the 13th and it's working fine, even tho I have the data turned off, but now I'm really freaked out about opening my next invoice
    Help TIA

To make sure you only use wifi for data, you can turn off the 3G data like you did. I can't explain why it would switch to your 3G data from wifi during the night. It could have been due to the network or the phone. The new iMessage is only between ios5 devices, so sending a text to another ios5 device will use data, but to other phones it will just send a regular sms text. You can turn iMessage off in the settings to make sure no data is ever used when texting. This is what I did since I have unlimited texting, but limited data.

  • Does texting and/or sending photos via text use up my data allowance?

I am just trying to confirm this for a friend---that texting and sending photos via text does not use up my data allowance. Can anyone confirm this for me?

After thinking about this a bit more, we would need to know HOW you text and send photos.
Sending SMS/MMS text/photos DOES NOT use up your data allowance. This is what I assumed when you simply said "texting and sending photos via text".
After thinking further, SMS/MMS is not the only way people "text and send photos via text. For example, iPhones can use iMessage and THOSE messages would use up your data allowance for actual messages sent via iMessage to/from other iPhones.
Other apps have their own texting capabilities which will ALSO use up your data allowance. Examples would be Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Instagram, Tango, etc...
If you are simply sending via SMS/MMS, then no you are not using up your data allowance. If you are utilizing some other method, then the answer could very well be yes.

  • How can I stop music and movies from being automatically deleted from my phone and saved on the cloud? I've just tried to watch a movie on my 2 hour commute, but yet AGAIN it has been removed. I do NOT want to spank all of my data allowance

How can I stop music and movies from being automatically deleted from my phone and saved on the cloud? I've just tried to watch a movie on my 2 hour commute, but yet AGAIN it has been removed. I do NOT want to spank all of my data allowance downloading it again, especially because (believe it or not) I added it to my phone because that's precisely where I wanted it!! Any help much appreciated

FYI I had to put this link into firefox to reply - because **** back safari just wouldn't register my clicks to any of the links on the post... Despite reloadeing and even restarting my computer. Totally annoying and a massive pain in the ***.
But in terms of my initial query; thanks for responding. But no, this is NOT the cause of the problem. I have auto sync and sync over wifi activated, but have also selected manually manage music and videos. Plus, all of my music and videos are on my macbook, absolutely all of it, so if it my phone was syncing with my macbook everything would still be on the phone. Life would be peachy if my phone jsut copied everything that was on my macbook, but unfortuantely it keeps deleting tracks for no apparent reason.
Any thoughts greatly welcomed, because at the moment i can only conclude that my iphone is crap.

  • Data allowance and overages AM I CRAZY?

For the past 3 months, I have gotten the warning that I am approaching my data allowance early in my cycle period. The first month I chalked it up to my son being out of school for the summer and thought, we probably WERE using more data between us.
The second month upon getting the warning again, I upped my plan from 6MB to 8MB to keep from getting charged the 'overage' charge. I also had a long talk scolding my son, sure he had been doing something 'extra' that he shouldn't have been that once again had increased our data usage.
But here we are again- that warning saying I'm approaching my limit even earlier in the month than last time after I had increase it last month for the extra data (and charge!).
We(my son and myself) have been extra careful to turn data off at night to keep from anything running that would make this possible.
We've rarely used the phone except everyday calls and text(which are unlimited) and have even went days without turning data on at all on either phone to try and avoid this- so why am I still approaching this limit every month and so early? I've increased my data plan and am still hitting that mark earlier than I did at 6MB, it just doesn't make sense.
I can't prove anything concrete that this is something that verizon is doing to up my monthly bill, but do feel something just isn't right.
I've talked to CS and you know the drill- nothing is out of the ordinary on their end or ever their fault.
Of course I'm missing my unlimited data plan that I was forced to give up if I upgraded phones last year. It was either stick with the old phone and keep unlimited data plan, or switch to their 'new' data plans and get new phones. I had my previous phone for 4 yrs, it was time to upgrade. So I feel there really wasn't a choice. It was have a phone, or no phone.
And though I love my Galaxy SIII- What's the point of having it if I can't use it to its capacity without having to mortgage my home to do so???
Am I crazy for feeling this? Or are there others out there who feel their data usage has increased without explanation or contribution on your part toward it???

I have had the same issue and in the end of Oct and up until now the data usage has skyrocketed. I have not changed my usage in one year, I do not stream or download music and videos.  I called and they said they will send me a used jet pack, it is not my jet pack my iphone is not working right either. Well the issue is I have a new iphone and it can not connect to 4g even 3g at times, and has the lowest speed I have ever seen, sent text are not received, when I talk to people they tell me I am breaking up, internet pages will not load they time out.
This is not just a mifi jet pack issue it is network. The internet is running very very slow, keeps timing out, dropping internet on my jet pack and iphone.
I have read so many posts about data issues for the last three months, and Verizon is brushing it off. I was told by 3 techs that the data is getting burned up because it keeps pulling while loading a page, stops and starts over and it is burning up all my data. No refund for the whole month is did not work right. I still have very little use of my mifi and iphone accessing the internet. I have Verizon towers all around me and in one the best spots for Verizon, there is no excuse for this.

  • I accidentally turned off wifi and ran some videos overnight on my mobile and used all of my data allowance on day 3 of the month. I screwed up... I acknowledge that... do I bump my plan up 1gb at a time or wait to the end of the month to adjust the bill.

I just need to know my best options to control the amount I pay in overages since I messed up. Been with Verizon for at least 15 years and I haven't really had this come up before. Not sure how I messed up this bad this time

Personally, I would wait until ~5-7 days before the end of your billing cycle to make the adjustment RETROACTIVE to the beginning of your current billing cycle. That way you can add what you need with a bit extra for the last 5 days. Of course you would want to make another adjustment on the last day of your billing cycle to drop your data allowance back to normal, only have that adjustment made effective on the 1st day of your NEXT billing cycle. You don't want to have to pay for the extra data NEXT month.

  • Does the data transfer used in the back up in time capsule included in the data allowance from my service provider?

Is the data transfer used in the backup with airport time capsule included in the data allowance with my service provider?

I am using Ethernet cable to connect TC to the modem. I am only backing up my mac book air within range of the TC. So I guess it will be OK from your reply. As a trial I did interrupt the back up by turning off the TC, disconnecting the Ethernet cable, turning TC back on. The mac would not connect wirelessly with the TC without the Ethernet connection.
It is not using ISP .. absolutely for sure. Well 99.999%.. absolute tends to be only in maths.
But you did the test wrongly.. I said to disconnect the modem.. during the backup.. not turn off the TC.. obviously once interrupted the TC will not work again until everything is plugged in.. but it will work even bridged for a short time.. just unplug the WAN port from the modem.
The test is moot now.. as I can give you a 99.999% promise it is not using ISP.

  • Why can't I change my individual line's data allowance on my desktop computer without switching shared plans?

On my computer, I am not able to navigate to any sort of page that allows me to change my phone line's data allowance without having to change my entire plan to a Share Everything plan. Every time I go up top to the My Verizon tab and select "Change Minutes, Text, or Data," I get redirected to a page that simply shows my current plan, and then suggests that I change to a Share Everything plan. Why are there no options in my 'Current Plan' details that allow me to add or reduce data allowances?
I have found that I can accomplish this via the MyVerizon app on my phone, but I really want to know why I'm not given the option to do this on my computer. Customers should not feel forced to change plans simply because some web site features have been removed or relocated. Please re-establish these plan changing options, or provide a link to their new web site location.

I don't remember exactly what the 'Change Minutes, Text, or Data' page used to look like, but I'm fairly certain that it has been changed since the last time I tried to look at it. I used to visit the page and be able to change data settings on individual lines very easily. Now I have no options to change data or minutes in my current plan. The only way to change my plan at all on the web site is to select a new share plan, which I am not currently committed to do.

I have recently got a new replacement iPhone 4.  Since I got this I have found that my data allowance is getting used up during the night while my phone is charging on the bedside table.  How an I find out what is causing this and stop it happening?  Some nights the usage is 150 meg!

You can not access the backup directly.
Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
What is it you are worried about losing that isn't already on your current device?
