Wish List Item: Adobe Lightroom Catalog Reader (free)

Adobe Acrobat Reader is the reason for Adobe Acrobat (the creator) success.
A Lightroom Catalog Reader would enable me to take a catalog of images stored on an external drive to some other location, plug it into some other computer, and view the images. The reader would apply the fixed held in the catalog database, on the fly, just as Lightroom does. It should allow for thumbnail browsing, single image view, and full screen, plus a very basic slide show. Nothing more; no exporting, no printing, no rating, no developing... just viewing with fixed applied, without a need to export the images. ...Ok, maybe allow for flagging.
Why not just export? Because that takes time, creates another copy, and is inconvenient.
How about this scenario: I've got a catalog of images from a shoot. I want to present them to someone for him/her to choose some picks. My catalog resides on a little USB drive. If I could put Adobe Lightroom Catalog Reader on my USB drive, I could take the drive to this person, review the images, make a few picks, and then bring the drive back home to work on within the full version of LR. I should just haul a laptop right? A little USB drive is a lot more portable.

I'd like to see a reader as in Expressions (formerlly iView). I can give a client a catalog. She can browse & make selections, E-mail those to me in their notepad function. When I get that E-mail, I can load it into my catalog and see those picks as a collection. I can then tweek those originals and get them ready for printing. Great feature for client relations. Lets have it in LightRoom!

BUG FIX
Fix the timecode bug on frame holds. When frame hold is applied to a clip, the timecode displayed (program overlay) continues running. Worse : if this frame hold is trimmed from the beginning or the end, the time code shift... Making a conformation impossible !!
Fix the speed effect on clip. When a 400% speed effect is applied to a clip, it sometimes do 399.xx % speed effects. It's confirmed by precomp to an AE comp. AE is also showing a wrong value...
Lumetri FX is dissapering when a clip is precomp to an AE comp from Pr.
Missing font warning : when a font is missing, Pr does not tell which clip is concerned and simply replace with another font !

Where are my missing wish list items for music?

For some reason I cannot find my entire wish list. I haven't checked all the applications but my music library is missing many wish list items I had saved to my account. I can remember some of them but I was really looking forward to saving all my interests in my account and now many of them are gone. Is there anyway to get them back?

But I'm digging around inside the package and still puzzled -- images inside the folder Aperture Library.aplibrary -> Masters -> 2009 -> 06 -> 14 -> 20090614-214439/ were indeed shot on June 14, 2009. So it appears that those various level folder names reflect image creation date, not the import date.

these various level folder names reflect what Aperture thinks are the import dates.
The "Import Session" is one of the Aperture specific Metadata tags. You can display it in the Info/Metadata pane of the Inspector Panel, if you add it to one of the presets, and then you'll know, where to search, if you absolutely must to sleep well .
You can also use this tag to search or to define a smart album. For example, the image below has been captured in 2003, but was imported in 2010, and will be found in a 2010 folder.

Is there any way to see the items in the app store "wish list" directly on the iPad?

Dang, and here I go adding iPad apps to my wish list while I wait for my 3G to come in. Was hoping I could see that while out and about on the iPad so I didn't have to sync. Flag certain apps for later viewing, check updated reviews, etc. Bah!

AppleTV won't store the wishlist - this is an iTunes store problem.
Things might disappear if they are no longer available in iTunes too.

List of recent Lightroom Catalogs not showing in the dialog at launch

I have a friend using Lightroom 3 on a Windows 7 PC. She uses multiple catalogs. (one for each client) as do I.
Now when she launches LR the list of recent catalogs is empty. Could this be cleared some where? Why do they not show up and will they start showing up again after she opens different catalogs?

If LR uses the Windows recent-files facility, and I’m not saying it does, then clearing recent documents in another area of Windows might have cleared LR’s too. A question back to her would be whether other recent-documents lists have disappeared or only the LR-catalog recent list. The recent-files would be user-profile specific, too, I think, so logging in with a different user would make things look different.
If the LR recent-library-list is something internal to LR and unrelated to the OS, then it could be part of the preferences, and if she reset preferences for any reason, then that might have cleared the catalog list.
If this is on a Mac, then I’m not sure, but I’d expect the OS has a recently-opened-files facility, too, and that such things are tied to the user.
Unless there is some permission problem or corruption that has caused them to disappear, they probably should start showing up, again. It’d be easy enough for her to check, just open LR and open a catalog, then close LR and open LR, again and see if the just-opened catalog shows in the list. If so then there’s probably nothing more to do, except not do whatever cleared the list in the first place, where we can’t really know what she did since we weren’t there.

Real consevative wish list for Adobe...............

As a professional cartographer, the last couple of maps I
published were done with FH8. Great program! i'd take an intel
version of FH8 over AI CS2 or CS3 in a second!!!!! Find and replace
graphics was the absolute best feature to be introduced to a vector
graphics program.... and what really bothers me is that Adobe still
seems to ignore this feature to this dayI Don't you see the value
of this feature guys????? Ughhh!
One last rant and I'm going to bed.... hopefully to wake up
from this Adobe buyout of Macromedia nightmare. You know, I hardly
ever had to even look at the manual to use FH it was so easy!
Recently, I've browsed some AI books and have been appalled with
the confusion and complextity of this program! Sure, some books
show off some halfway decent maps as examples, but the road to get
there is truly a highway to hell! I'd have to order about 3 extra
manuals.... the pages would be falling out so fast from overuse!
Oyyy! Maybe its time to go into GIS....but that'll mean going
over to ArcView in Windows , another step into the abyss of hell.

I agree completely, FH8 must be the best version to this
date. MX is a joke in comparison. To make FH8 compatible with OSX
must be the best investment for Adobe today, much better than
starting the bug battle in MX....

Adobe Lightroom wont read raw files

I have a Nikon D3000 i have been shooting in raw and using lightroom 3 for about 3 or 4 months, it has always worked fine, but today when i tried to upload some pictures it said that it couldnt read the files. I uninstalled and then reinstalled lightroom and downloaded an update, but it still wont work. I dont know what to do to make it work, any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Connect the camera/card reader to your computer and drag the image files into some temporary folder (i.e. on your desktop).
A cable/card reader/port can go bad from one hour to the other, so you have to find out the base of your problem by just using alternate hardware.

2 wish list items

The more I get involved with helping people develop iPhone DPS apps, I wish for 2 capabilities in DPS:
1. It would be really nice to be able to arrange the articles vertically. We have the option now with the "horizontal swipe only" option to arrange the pages of an article horizontally. But I want the pages of each article to remain with a vertical swipe, but place each article below the other so you can just swipe vertically through the entire app. This would simplify navigation for apps where a horizontal and vertical navigation experience is too complex.
2. The ability to disable page-to-page and article-to-article swiping entirely. I have a customer with an app in development where they are providing the entire navigation system with buttons, so they really don't want the user to accidentally swipe from screen to screen. It would be nice if articles and folios could still be created just as they are now, but have an option in App Builder to disable swiping. We probably would want to also disable the browse button in this scenario also, but the rest of the ui could remain as-is.
I thought I'd throw this out there. I would find it really useful.

Nice ideas, though I haven't dealt with iPhone at all up to this point.

WISH LIST ITEM

When Apple next upgrades the software (v7.5?) I would suggest that they include a feature that shows you what songs you already own as your surf. It would be very nice to be surfing the website and see little (O) icons to signify you (O)wn the song.
Beyond that - it would be nice to have easy sub accounts from a master account. They all get paid from the same card, but each person could have their own rules and systems for purchasing including limits.

You can set up an allowance for another account that is billed to the credit card for the primary account.

Constructive wish list item

For me iSync works really well. I just brought a Nokia 7370, and it Sync's without problems to both address book and iCal. The only improvment that I can see is that with address book you can specify which group you want to Sync with the phone, but new contacts added to the phone are placed into the general group 'ALL' but are not included into the group that is set to Sync with the phone.
This would be really useful to me, as I only put around 10% of my numbers on to my phone, as most of them are international numbers and buisiness numbers that I don't need on my personal phone for local use.

PSE wish list - Auto stacking RAW + JPGs

I'm using PSE V10 and have a 'wish list' item for suggested improvements to the program.
A feature that would be extremely valuable to many users would be the ability to auto stack photos where there are the RAW + JPG images present in the Catalog. The JPG would end up on top of the stack.
This can be done manually but is tedious when there are many photos to deal with. Failing an automatic feature a single action shortcut to access the 'Stack | Stack selected photos' command would be useful.

As reported above I THOUGHT I'd found a shortcut suitable for stacking a JPG over a RAW.
However, the stack command in the main menu, which has the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+S will stack the RAW over the JPG whenever the RAW thumbnail is ahead of the JPG in the Catalog. I want the reverse to happen.
I found I can get the JPG to stack over a RAW, if the RAW appears before the JPG, by selecting the RAW first then with the Ctrl button down select the JPG. Then using 'Stack | Stack selected photos' in the mouse right click menu. However, this fails when using Ctrl+Alt+S whenever the RAW is listed before the JPG. Am I missing something?

Finder Questions / Wish List

So far so good on Leopard. "Back to my Mac" and screen sharing for me are worth the cost of admission alone. Here are a few finder related questions, perhaps wish list items:
1. Stacks - I'm not a big fan yet.. In Tiger I had my applications folder in the dock. Right clicking on it would bring up a scrollable column containing all of my apps. Now I have to click on the stack, and then click on the "xx more in finder" icon to get to any app that starts with a letter greater than "s." Is there a way to scroll stacks?
2. Quick view - awesome stuff.. Select your files, hit the space bar, and see what you have. Very nice and a real time saver. However, if I select a batch of files to view I can't trash them individually from the quick view. Is there a keyboard shortcut for this? I could use coverflow but quick view just feels more 'precise'
3. Is there any way to make my dock at the bottom of the screen look like it does on the side? I keep my dock very small at the bottom of the screen and really have a hard time seeing what apps are open (the little dot underneath the app blends in with the white '3D' dock tray.
4. Is anyone else experiencing an odd problem where you can't select anything on your desktop? This has happened twice to me now and is quite annoying. Can access things from the finder when this glitch takes effect but can't on the desktop.

Graphic UI seems a bit over board, simple and understated are easier to work with.
Get ride of the ugly transparent menu bar.
Get ride of the ugly 3D dock.
Get ride of the new window colors, they are too dark.
Get ride of the ugly start up screen (purple/star field). again simple and understated are easier to work with.
Bring back hierarchy menu selection from the dock.

Wanted: Lightroom Catalog Viewer

Am I the only person who would love to see an Adobe Lightroom Catalog Viewer, available for all to use to view the contents of LR catalogs?
Why?
Here's one example: I have a portable USB drive on which I keep several catalogs. I work on these catalogs by plugging into my LR-installed computer. But sometimes I have the drive with me, but without my computer, and I find myself wanting to show a few pictures on a friend's computer. It would be great if I could just plug into his computer, and use a LR Viewer to show him my images.
I know, I could just export a copy of the images to this drive. But that's sort of a waste when all I need is a simple view once in awhile. Plus, Export doesn't seem to retain file/folder hierarchy if I export more than one folder at a time, so exports are sort of painful to search through if you're trying to find one photo to show off... especially when you don't have LR handy.... which brings me back to the need for a LR viewer.
Could this be in the works?

Yes, actually I've used SQLite for some of my database needs within Perl applications (web/cgi, etc.). So I've been able to look over the contents of LR database files that way. But as you surmised, I'm looking for a slightly more elaborate solution.
I know Adobe would never want to erode Lightroom sales with a freebie such as Lightroom Catalog Viewer (my own name for the idea), but I think if the functionality were limited only to viewing thumbnails, screen-full displays, and simple slideshows from a LR catalog, it wouldn't erode sales, and may actually serve to entice people into LR who otherwise might not have the motivation.
I would think that there should be no library editing, no flagging, color coding, none of that. No develop module, no printing, no web page generation, and only a single type of basic slide show.
Why would people use it, being so basic? Because it applies all of the database-stored settings to an image without first exporting the image. I would be able to save an entire catalog to my external drive, take it on the road, and invoke the viewer from any computer to browse through the catalog. No editing, no frills; just let me see my corrected images without having to export them all.
