Wish to build a LAN and more 10.5 selection of Mac hardware

Hi all
I wish to do the following and would help and advice from this group to guide our purchases and development of the following;
I wish to set up a company dedicated LAN [with wifi access]. We also need to access the system via ftp and some way remotely connect from several laptops on the road to a main server securely. BUT we will also need to access a few PC programs either jointly on a Mac server AND a PC linked up or just with a Mac. We already have a real mix of systems needing to access the proposed setup. Mac Mini's. ibooks, Ti's Intel Apple's G5's and so on.
Can you guys suggest a low learning curve, reliable setup?

Thank you so much for your reply Shuchi.
I fixed it after reading this disscussion.

  • XML Forms Builder complete Documentation and more

    Hi,
I have several questions to the XML-Forms-Builder (XML-FB):
    1)
I am searching for a really complete documentation of the XML-FB. I know the "how to create xml forms - PDF", the "help.sap.com", this forum,...., but i don't find one complete documentation. For example i miss the description of really all controls AND whose properties.
    2)
Can I await any changing/enhancement between NW 2004 SP16 (my active Release) and NW 2004s SPx - with focus to the XML-FB?
    3)
Is it possible to create forms witch allows <u>the author</u> to choose the placement of controls - for example images in the left, right, middle of the page - maybe via select/assign the corresponding form (-> maybe via using control-selector)? This means more individual flexibility for the author.
I am searching for a solution without programming a proprietary solution, only customizing !
okay, that's all, up to now
    Thanks for your patience
    Hermann

    Hi Herrmann,
1.) There is no. Some features have been added more or less silently within the last year, but a central doc hasn't been published.
2.) All I know is: Not much. Maybe the Forms Builder developer at SAP reads this and could throw a somewhat more detailed answer.
3.) We have developed this as a small part of easyWCM; when creating the XML form, you can define not only 1 ShowForm, but different; the author then can choose which form to use. We provide such pre-defined forms within the BP.
    Hope it helps

  • Can I create a wireless LAN and file sharing between two household Macs?

I've got an iMac G5 running 10.4.11 and an Intel iMac running 10.5 and was wondering if I create a wireless Local Area Network and file sharing between my two household Macs?

I have a network set up for my mom using an old blue iMac with an airport card as the base station. I'm using Tiger on the machine, but you should be able to do this on Leopard, too. She's 700 miles away, and I did it quite a while ago, but it seems I set everything up using the Airport Utility. At one point I think I had Internet Sharing on, too, but I don't remember if that's still on. Haven't needed to use file sharing on the network, but my G4 and her boyfriends MacPro happily use the network via Airport. I'm guessing you could share files that way. If it doesn't work, an Airport Express is a less expensive option for the router, at least cheaper than an Extreme.

  • Doesn't load a certain website I have. My site loads on all other computers, and in different browsers on my Mac???

I'm building a store and for some reason FireFox for Mac seems to not want to load it all the time. Sometimes it just stops loading the site even though the server is up and it loads in all other browsers. It only happens on my computer and it's really frikken annoying. It's coming to the point where I will have to switch browsers if I cannot find a fix. It's impossible to work on a site when FireFox refuses to load it at times, but I have NO idea why!!
Chrome for Mac loads the site INSTANTLY, but I like to use FireFox because of the helpful add-ons it has.
I'm not posting the URL here because it is an adult store and I'm not sure if that is allowed.
I just think it's weird that FireFox ONLY does it on this site, and ONLY does it on my computer. It's been doing it for weeks now, since I started the site. The other weird thing is that when I Quit FF completely and restart it, my site loads fine. I can be working on it for hours and then BOOM, FF decides to be a royal P.I.T.A.
Is there any way to troubleshoot this issue?
    Thank you.

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
    THE FULL STORY
I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Power-Line Adapters - High Cost, Blocks at Least One Wall Outlet and Does Not Solve the Wireless Need
I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • WRT350-N, 1 LAN and 2 Internet connection...

    Hi there,
I'am a lucky owner of a WRT350-N that works pefectly, but i'm trying, without any success to build a LAN with 2 internet connection.
I got 2 kind of internet, 1 through DSL and 1 through CABLE.
    My standard configuration is:
    Cable Modem >>> WRT350-N >>> 2 PC on Gbit wired lan >>> 1 ext. HDD on usb 2.0 >>> 1 Notebook on wireless G >>> PS3 on wireless G
What I'm trying to do is connect the Notebook to the DSL internet with an ethernet cable, but keeping shared the file with the other PC via wireless, the other PCs must remain connected to the internet through the Cable Modem
    What i've done is:
    - Connected the WRT350-N to the internet via Cable modem
    - Connected the Notebook to the WRT350-N via wireless
    - Blocked the access to the Cable internet for the notebook on the WRT350-N
    - Connected the Notebook to the DSL router (Zoom ADSL x5)
    - Blocked the internet sharing on the notebook
    - Selected the rigth Getaway, Cable for PCs and DSL Notebook
With this configuration everything works fine for a couple of hour then the Notebook start to try to connect to internet through the wireless connection obviusly without succes...
Can anyone help me with this?

On the majority of Linksys (Cisco) SOHO routers, the default factory setting is to have one WAN (Inet). In order to have multiple uplink connections, you'll probably need to look into third party firmware (ie DDwrt, OpenWRT, etc). You are looking at configuring multiple Vlans on the router, then loadbalancing (usually round robin) across them. As well, you'll need to configure a secondary firewall script, for the second WAN. Try reading up at: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Dual-WAN_for_simple_round-robin_load_equalization Be aware that Linksys provides no official support for thirdparty firmware, and you're rather on your own as such. (Note to any Linksys moderator: You may want to upchannel to your R&D department that SOHO with multiple WAN connection, DSL & Cable or otherwise, has become more popular. May want to introduce a product line for this target consumer group.) Cheers.

  • Location and building in Training and Event Management

    Hello Dear Friends,
I Have a maybe very simple but confusing question.
I can not distinguish between "Location" and "Building" in Training and Event Management.Does Location contain buldings?
what is the relation between these two? and where do they join and link to each other? please give me an example.
Edited by: AppreciateSAP on Dec 28, 2010 9:54 AM

    HI,
Location means name of the city/town where the training is conducted,
Building means, in one city there may be more then one training institute/different building.
    for an Ex.
    Location - Delhi.
Building-    Where the training is actually conducted. Like building 1 and building 2.

I experienced this problem today, and kind of "solved" it. There may be an underlying bug, though.
My project compiled fine last Thursday, but I opened it up on Monday (unchanged) and this error showed up in several files. I tried quitting and restarting Flash Builder to no avail. I could not replicate the problem in a new project.
For me, each occurence of the error was at a private function definition, so I thought I would try changing "private" to "public" on one of the functions. The error immediately went away in all 3 locations (not just the one I edited). I then changed it back to "private" with no error.
I hope that will help the Adobe team track down the problem.

  • WRT150N (New) Gateway IP stops responding to LAN and wireless clients. Hangs, stops, loss of service

WRT150N Firmware Version: v1.51.3 : From LAN and wireless connected devices, Internet connectivity is lost. I try to ping the LAN side gateway IP address from my laptop and desktop, no response. Web management does not work either. Power re-cycle of the WRT150N fixes the problem. The problem is infrequent, it can happen twice per day or once every 2 days.
    When the problem occurs,
    the DHCP info in my clients looks fine and shows the correct gateway IP address, mask etc. ;
    the desktop and laptop can still ping each other;
The gateway is unreacheable and all out going connectivity is lost
Does anybody have any solution or maybe has had the same experience.
I cannot track the problem happening to any particular event or usage pattern however I am using the Azureus bit torrent client all the time.
I have an incident raised with LinkSys Technical Support but no response so far from them.

or search for the other thread started by (fb2k). But briefly over the 1 year period since this thread started my local store replaced my wrt150n 3 times and then gave me a wrt160n which was replaced and its still having the problem. I am now running Open Source wireless software (DD-WRT) on the WRT160N and it has been up 18 days with no restart. I didnt want to do this but I got fed up taking my unit back to the store. Thanks to fb2k (on the other thread) for taking the plunge and reporting success with the DD-WRT software.

  • Reduce time to build setup project and size of .msi

I have noticed that since we started working with Crystal 2008 (previously we used version 8.5), the merge module added to the Visual Studio 2005 setup project seems to cause the build process to take much longer than before (nearly 10 minutes), and the resulting .msi has ballooned from a few megs into around 54MB.
I think that this is because it is included language support for all languages, even though the only language we need is English.  I might be misunderstanding the cause - this is just my best guess.
Does anyone know if there is a way to reduce the amount of time to build, and reduce the size of the .msi?
Thank you for any help.. shannon

    Thank you for the response..
My Visual Studio 2005 solution is configured to not build the setup project automatically.  I only build it manually when I need to do a test deployment on the development server.  As I am approaching the end of the development cycle, I am having to deploy to the dev server pretty frequently - this is why the long build process is becoming more of a problem for me.  It is making the testing process very cumbersome.
To be honest, the size of the .msi file doesn't cause any problem for me, but I am guessing that if there were a way to reduce the size, it would also reduce the time, since it seems to take a long time to pack everything into that .msi during the setup project build.

    Hy ,
My mac pro (SL 10.6.8) wakes up every minutes when I use wake on lan and I share one of my Hard Drive.
When I unplug the ethernet cable it doesn't wake any more so I suppose that some thing wakes it up on my network ( 1 printer canon MP620, 2 mac books, 2 iPads, 2 IPhones and 2 time capsules !) ...even when all these devices are "sleeping"
    Any idea?

  • ANN: Upgrade Lorem and More for Dreamweaver CS5

My Lorem and More extension, which inserts Lorem ipsum and other filler text into Dreamweaver pages, can cause Dreamweaver CS5 to crash in certain circumstances.
I have updated the extension to make it compatible with CS5. If you use Lorem and More, please download the updated version (1.3.0) from http://foundationphp.com/tools/index.php.
It's a free extension, and the new version is backwards compatible with all versions of Dreamweaver (apart from really ancient ones).

    Works intermittently in:
    DW CS5.5. (Version 11.5 Build 5344. Windows 7. Lorem and More 1.3.0.)
DW CS4 (Version 10.0 Build 4117. Windows XP Pro. Lorem and More 1.3.0.)
    identical behavior in both
    It works fine IF:
    I open a file, go immediately to Insert | Lorem & More | choose any combination of Type, Format and Amount and click OK;
I open a file, click anywhere in the file or move the cursor with the keyboard arrow keys and then choose Insert | Lorem.... (etc)
BUT, if I type any keyboard character, number, Enter, Space or Backspace, then Lorem & More will NOT work.
If I then close the file, reopen it and try Lorem & More again without first typing anything in the file, it will work.
EDIT: just discovered that it will work again if I give the focus to something outside of the Document window (for example, click on a file or folder name in the Files panel, launch Help, click in the CSS Styles panel or Properties panel), then repeat the Insert | Lorem... steps. Also, it works if I click on something outside the Document window, then click again in the Document window. So:
    Type anything in the document
    Insert | Lorem....
    = FAIL
    Type anything in the document
Click somewhere else in Dreamweaver to remove the focus from the Document window
    Insert | Lorem...
    = WIN
    Type anything in the document
Click somewhere else in Dreamweaver to remove the focus from the Document window
Click back in the Document window where you want to insert the lorem ipsum
    Insert | Lorem...
    = WIN

Hey together,we are currently searching for a new Backup Software Solution and I wondered if one of you could help me..Our situation is the following:4 physical Servers
One of them with our productive Data ( 53TB of Files, Videos, Music, InDesign, PSD,...)
Second one with User Profiles and temporary Stuff and Applications
One production Server (just Bare Metal Recovery needed)
Remote-Site Server (Windows DC +2hyper-vmachines)(duetolow budget the DC is also Hyper-V)The Servers are connected via 10Gb/s FC internal Network directly patched to the same Backbone switch.Actually we are using DPM from Microsoft, but it cannot handle all the Data. The Backup Server is a Windows Server with a 80TB Storage connected via FC.
The Storage itself has not really any functions but basically creating a RAID. We are using Infortrends FC-Raid Systems. So there...

  • ITunes Gone Haywire: Playlists, Folders, Settings and more

Hello all. Man...I really need some sage advice in a bad way. I've been trying my best to conquer this major iTunes problem of mine, but ultimately, I have just not been able to find a working solution to fix it. Even my efforts at pinpointing the source of my troubles have been in vain. I've finally become exasperated enough that I decided I be better off trying my luck here. Any help would be very much appreciated.
THE PROBLEM(S): A couple months ago I was working on some music projects within iTunes, when something seemed to go awry, because it promptly started acting strangely, not like it normally did, and that's when I began to experience the problems. It had always run smoothly for me up until then, but it's been giving me major trouble ever since. Here's some of what's been going on:
Playlists gone haywire: My entire stable of folders and playlists has seemingly gone mad, doing all sorts of unfortunate and crazy things. I routinely get new waves of unwanted playlists and folders appearing in my library--some are exact duplicates of playlists and folders that already existed in my library, while others bear the same or similar titles, but are deformed in one way or another. Moreover, I'll often get a bunch of very old playlists reappear--ones that I had long since deleted from my library. Other times I will find that a whole bunch of the lists and folders have suddenly disappeared again, or sometimes their location will change. The worst of all is when, as happened a few times, I just completed a bunch of changes and modifications to the library's folders and playlists, or I was working on a music project in some lists, and then suddenly it all disappears into thin air a short time later (after a reboot of iTunes, for instance).
    B) iTunes Library Files (itl, xml, genius, extras, and sentry): They refuse to nest in the main iTunes folder location they are supposed to reside in. Instead they insist on taking up residence in my Previous iTunes Libraries folder. I tried a few strategies I had come across here in the pages of the community, but none has worked to date.
    C) Unstable Preference Settings: At least a few times I've logged on to iTunes to find that my usual settings and preferences have completely changed, causing problems. Sometimes it will change my iTunes Media folder location in Edit>Preferences>Advanced to another location (like to my Previous iTunes Libraries folder location), thus creating a new hierarchy of media folders therein. Also, my settings in View keep changing back and forth, my sources in Edit>Preferences>General had changed on me one time, and more.
    MY CURRENT SETUP
-My PC: Dell Inc. Inspiron 580, Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Home Premium Edition, Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)
    -iTunes 11.1.3.8
Library Size: 335 GB, 24,734 files, 13,056 folders
    I'm an iTunes Match subscriber.
Current iTunes Media folder location via Edit>Preferences>Advanced tab: C:/Users/Dowgiert/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media. Both "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" are currently checked.
    Current folder path
Titles iTunes has chosen for my library files it uses: iTunes Library 2013-10-25 Extras, iTunes Library 2013-10-25 Genius, iTunes Library 2013-10-25 (.itl), iTunes Library 2013-10-25 (.xml), sentinel *See screen shot below.
Current location that iTunes uses for my library files (database .itl file, genius file, etc.) is: C:/Users/Dowgiert/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries. The folder paths for these same files are: C:/Users/Dowgiert/My Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries.
-I also have an iPad 2, and a couple other iPods (classic and Nano). None of these currently has the iTunes library in the desired state (thus ruling out importing from them).
    WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR
-Backed up my library with SyncToy 2.1 (x64)
-I downloaded iTunes Folder Watch, however it doesn't seem to work until I fix the location of my .xml file.
-I've tried countless other fixes, changes to my software and PC, etc., but I won't list them all here now. Feel free to ask me more.
    WHAT I'VE NOTICED
-It seems like these unpleasant library changes are often more likely (but not always) to coincide with one of the following: an iTunes update; an iTunes Match update; a Genius update; an iTunes shutdown, followed by a later restart of the program.
Again, thank you so much for any help. I'm really stuck. I have all sorts of other information at the ready, so feel free to ask if you have questions.
    Forest

Hello again Mr. TuringTest2! Continued thanks for your help sir! I've long suspected that iTunes Match was partly responsible for my troubles, by the way. Let me update you on what's going on.
    New Steps I've Taken:
-After your last response, I did the readings (thanks!), and then began by turning off my iTunes Match. From reading the post you provided on resetting iTunes Match, I got the impression that my order of operations should go as follows (please correct me if I'm wrong):
    1st) Disable iTunes Match. [Completed]
2nd) Clean up my library [Started, but not completed*]
3rd) Try the Shift+ start iTunes Match technique to try and successfully clear away any harmful entries that might be saved in my Apple iCloud/iMatch database. [Incomplete]
4th) Restart iTunes and turn iTunes Match back on. Determine if the problems continue. [Incomplete]
    *UPDATE: STEP 2 INTERRUPTED
I began clearing, moving, and modifying the playlists and folders that were the unwanted end-products of my recent troubles. I was making good progress cleaning up: Went from 258 playlists (regular) down to 200, and from 67 folders and subfolders down to 27. I hadn't yet deleted any of my 56 smart playlists, but did place them all into one folder (to organize them for later cutting).
Then came the hiccup. I didn't know clicking the button seen below on my account page would automatically turn iTunes Match back on, but it did:
Match ran it's usual 3-step process, and in just a few moments, undid the almost all of the aforementioned progress I had made. Of course, as it seems want to do, it added back a whole bunch of trash playlists and folders.
I ran a couple of your scripts to assess the damage. They showed that just by this accidental restart of iTunes Match alone, my library ballooned from 200 reg playlists/56 smart lists/27 folders, all the way up to new totals of 264/64/47!
When I returned to the problem today, first thing I did was turn iTunes Match off again. This resulted in dropping the totals to 235/63/47. I found that odd, so I did some more testing--turning Match on and off, each time recording the results. Here's all the recorded results in total numbers of regular playlists, smart playlists, and folder counts after each change:
    Off:     200/56/27
    On:     264/64/47
    Off:     235/63/47
    On:     285/64/48
    Off:     256/63/48
    On:     306/64/49
    Off:     277/63/49
I ran your PlaylistToFile script each time after I turned iTunes Match off (it wouldn't run when I had Match on for some reason) and made copies of the results. I wanted to be able to see the specific changes being made each time, and to try and determine which specific playlists and folders were acting up. I you think taking a look at these results would be useful, I've copied them into a shared google document you can access at the following link:
    -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ESzfCpcO14krXp5sTQdMke0CpFDF--gbwVxrGaNmbgw/ edit?usp=sharing
I also noticed that iTunes started creating more backups of my library's database files within the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. Here's an image of the new ones:
Also, it appears iTunes created new .itl and .xml files in my main iTunes folder (see below). Or at least that's what the "Date Created" info column says. What up with that? Also, I still have the Trash folder here that you told me to set up, and a couple new .tmp files have appeared. Here's how it looks:
What do you think I should do tt2? If I had completed the four steps (outlined at top) without accidentally turning on Match before I all four were completed, would that have fixed the problem? Should I do something different, or in a different order? I'm all ears. Thank you so much for all your help!
    Eternally grateful,
    Forest
