  • I wish to learn Java

I am a C programmer who wishes to learn Java and releated skills.
    1) What books would you recommend.
    2) Where are there any good evening classes (London area).

what kinds of things do you want to learn in Java? If you want applications gui programming, Java 2 Black Book. Games? Java 1.4 Game Programming (not yet published).
There are all kinds of different things you can use java for and different books that cover different things.

  • How long does it take and how should I learn...

Hi. First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
I am new to web-design (as in brand-new xD) and wish to learn Dreamweaver.  With Dreamweaver being such a big application, with so many different tools etc I decided it would be best if I learned the languages I wish to use first, so as I know what Dreamwever is creating and I can 'fine-tune' my websites.
The languages I wish to learn are:
    HTML
    PHP
    Javascript
MySQL (I am aware that this isn't a 'language', but would still like to learn how it works and use it effectively)
    CSS
    My questions are:
In which order should I learn these languages?
Which version of each language should I learn?
For example should I learn HTML5, with it being relatively new and not widely supported, but with the support growing so fast would it be worth just learning HTML5 straight away?
Can you reccomend any books etc for me to learn with?  I am a full time college student, so will be teaching myself after college hours.
How long should I expect it to take to learn each language? (If you want to give the answer in days/months assume I will be spending 2hours per day average learning each language)
I do not want to learn every single detail about each language, but I do want to learn to a high enouhg level that I am comfortable with reading, understanding and editing my own code.
To help me understand your answers more clearly it would be great if you can just copy and paste this below (although feel free not to ):
What order should I learn these in?
    Language:
    Version:
How long (roughly) should it take?:
What resources van you reccomend for me to learn from?:
What experience do you have? (I'm just nosey like that :P):
    Other comments:
Please feel free to copy and paste the second half (with all the questions) as many times as you like for each language you choose to tell me about.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated and please, if you for some reason find this post offensive, think back to when you were learning; everyone has to start somewhere.
    Thanks for your time,
    Ryan

    Hi there

  • Learning to use systemd

I've been a casual/slightly-technical user of linux for well over a decade now. I've always wanted to learn more about system administration, and I've started trying to really understand how systemd works. Unfortunately, as I've searched for help on that, I have not been able to find anything that starts at a simple level. The Arch Wiki is close, but might be one or two steps ahead of me. Most everywhere (including in the wiki) it seems they give a few examples without actually explaining what's happening, and then say "if you want more information, check the man pages". The man pages are... well... man pages. They seem written for people who already know what they're doing.
I'm going to keep studying the wiki pages here, but I thought I'd inquire if anyone knows of a good resource for learning how to use systemd. Preferably something between the "for dummies" level and the wiki level. Does such a thing exist?

Edit:  I see others have more succintly summed up what I was going to say in this post.  Follow ANOKNUSA's advice if you wish to skip my long-winded post.
I'm going to attempt to answer some of these statements by putting into words my experiences of Linux/open source/how-to-learn-this-stuff-but-man-pages-suck.    I'm going to assume, based on what you've posted in this thread, that we think somewhat alike on this subject.  I'll be Canadian and apologise in advance if my assumption is dead wrong.  If that's the case you're free to light me on fire and watch me glow like a Christmas tree.
DrMag wrote:I've been a casual/slightly-technical user of Linux for well over a decade now.
I've been using Linux since Mandrake 8.0 in 2001.  I know I'm dating myself here but I wanted you to know that I'm not some snot-nosed 12 year old who thinks she knows better than an elder Linux user.
DrMag wrote:I've always wanted to learn more about system administration, and I've started trying to really understand how systemd works. Unfortunately ... I have not been able to find anything that starts at a simple level.
And you'll never find something simple enough to explain things in all the detail you are likely to want either.  I learned this lesson the hard way when I began using Linux.  We want something that explains ... well, everything and goes about documenting what each part of whatever it is we wish to learn in discrete segments.  To use your example:
DrMag wrote:It makes that jump to talking about "units" without ever explaining what is meant by that. What other types of units are there?
I remember very clearly saying almost exactly these same words on the Mandrake mailing list.  The response I got was (inevitably) read the man pages.  And then I said (nearly word-for-word) that:
DrMag wrote:The man pages are... well... man pages. They seem written for people who already know what they're doing.
You're right: they aren't meant for newbies and people who want things explained in a lot of detail so we can grasp the fine nuances of what this gear does when this cog goes in that direction.  This should sound familiar, I think.
DrMag wrote:  The Arch Wiki is close, but might be one or two steps ahead of me. Most everywhere (including in the wiki) it seems they give a few examples without actually explaining what's happening, and then say "if you want more information, check the man pages".
I understand this statement very well because I remember saying something very close to this to another member of the mailing list who tried to take me under his wing for a while.  It took me about a year to realise that there really is only one way for people like us to learn these things: Doing it.
Seriously.  Those two words were what helped me to learn-as-I-went-along. For example, I wanted to set up an ftp server and I had no idea how to do it.  I read man pages and newbie-esque websites for explanations.  Some helped and some didn't.  Mostly I learned by setting up what I thought would work but often-times failed.  So I'd go back and read up on what failed, why it failed, and what it is supposed to do that I obviously didn't understand.  Yes this took some reading and cogitating upon the seemingly arcane technical aspects that I wished to learn.  The result was that eventually I got an ftp server set up (after about 3 years of procrastinating, reading and absorbing strange technical concepts) but I did it.
In a way for you, I think, being an Archer will be to your advantage.  When I was looking for information and ideas back in the early 2000's there were no real references you could look at save some man pages, a few nice-to-newbies websites and some well-intentioned would-be Linux mentors.  Arch, on the other hand, has the wiki and a lot of good information on the forums.
What I suggest you do is what I did:  Play with whatever it is you want to understand on a separate machine, figure out what your goal is and then implement what you think is the correct answer.  Don't try to understand everything you want to know about systemd at this point.  Just install it, your server setup you want working and see if it does what you need it to do.  If it does, great.  Poke at it to find out what a component you don't understand is supposed to be.  Find a few newbie-oriented web pages to discern this information.  Read the man page if you dare but don't expect to get all the answers you want to learn.  Instead focus on said component you need/want to learn and work to understand it by itself to your satisfaction.
I also had to learn one more thing:  It's unlikely that you will learning everything about any aspect of Linux and, in your case, systemd itself.  You'll never be a systemd expert but if you're willing to try out these ideas it's likely that you will end up learning enough expertise to satisfy your needs and thirst for knowledge about Linux and systemd.

  • Learning eCommerce function to add to a Muse Site

    Hi,
I'm new to Muse and constructing websites.
I have a Team Membership which give the five WebBasics. If I wish to learn about adding the Business Catalyst functions such as eCommerce. Do I have to upgrade the WebBasics to WebCommerce packages. Or is there a way to learn without actualy publishing a finished site?
    Any help would be great.

Since it comes as part of the eCommerce package your better of creating some securezones and web apps, customise those as products and have a form that takes the information of what they want.
You can still go down quote root with the eCommerce as well but you got options.
Have a go with the Trial Tony but just be wary a few things wont be exposed in Muse or be able to do well in that. If you need help of course people are here and you can hit up a partner like us at Pretty or say Simpleflame, Bosweb, BC Gurus or others if you need help to do the actual implementations.

  • New to FLASH.... I am wanting to learn the how to say, fly a plane over page

    Hi
I am completely new to FLASH, i have managed to create a
basic step by step animation, much like i have done with an
animation tool, painshop pro animation programe.
But it must be easier than this, I have been told to look at
the manual, but i do not even know what i am looking for.
How do i get an image of lets say a plane to fly across the
page or in the window of the flash movie with a few clouds in the
    background say.
what i am hoping to next have is for the plane to have a
banner flying behind it with a name on it.
can someone please help me out here i am going crazy with
frustration it can not be that hard i am sure i just need help in
creating the first and i can hopefully work out how to add the
    banner in time.
just like PHP i worked it out in the end, i wish to learn all
    i can about flash.
or are there any other online tutorials that show a step by
step instruction on how to do basic things, i have looked at the
flash help files that came with the software but have no idea what
they are getting at, and again i do not know what to look for
    either,
cheers in advance for your help.

are you using the timeline and motion tweens? for a plane to
fly across the screen, you would need a movieclip symbol of the
plane. create a layer in the timeline that corresponds to this
symbol and place it on the start position on the stage. create a
new keyframe in the timeline several frames ahead, and with this
keyframe selected, move the plane to the end position. Then click
on one of the frames in between the start keyframe and the end
keyframe, and in the properties palette, select Tween: Motion.
replace the playhead at the beginning of the timeline and hit
return to see the animation in the authoring environment. if you
want to make it last longer, add more frames between the start and
end frames (select a frame in between and hit F5 to add frames or
Shift-F5 to delete frames). this is pretty basic, but it should get
    you started...
    good luck,
    albee

  • Language learning

I wish to learn Vietnamese.  I go to vdict.com and find that some characters show up as small black boxes.  How do I get character recognition in Vietnamese?  Also, the webpage doesn't work all that well on my Blackberry.  What can I do to get it to work better?  For example, the dictionary seems to work sporadically.  And also the page often refreshes into Vietnamese when I thought it was set for English.  Any suggestions?  Oh yes, I did enable java, just not the pop ups.

    hello,
your question is to download a Vietnamese font for Blackberry. There is a partial explanation here :
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8100-series-discussion-pearl/108730-wanted-vietnamese-langua...
there is a Vietnamese website about Blackberry too here :
    http://www.tinhte.com/cong-nghe/blackberry/
The search box on top-right of this page is your true friend, and the public Knowledge Base too:

  • Learning about web design web application design

    hi :
I wish to learn more about making web pages, web sites, web applications ..
Can some forum members recommend books, tutorials url ... or any learning resources.
Any good learning resource for javascript, CSS, ajax, jsp, JSF, ...
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Airguns guy

[w3schools.com|http://w3schools.com/] offer tutorials for html/css/xml/javascript/sql/php etc. Nice introductions and, for casual users of these technologies (like me), good references. More nuts and bolts and less design though.
For Java (the language that this forum is concerned with) try Sun's online Tutorial which has lots of examples. Books and things can be found by googling this site - there are lots of posts like reply 3 [in this thread|http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5306884].

[15-3-2013 01:46:29] Anonymous: one guy even mentioned having these issues lot more when having wifi enabled but that could just be due more trafic

[15-3-2013 01:57:16] Anonymous: but other sites don't have an app or html5 player so disabling flash ain't always a option
[15-3-2013 01:57:53] Anonymous: oh lemme correct that was 2 video's if played total

[15-3-2013 02:00:42] Anonymous: that should give clear idea maybe whats causing this
[15-3-2013 02:00:51] Anonymous: the app with highest data usage likely have issues
[15-3-2013 02:01:08] Anonymous: Or well could be
[15-3-2013 02:01:21] Anonymous: doubt apps with low data usage are causing it
[15-3-2013 02:01:50] Anonymous: Not been playing video's at all lately my data usage is facebook 10 gb lol 2e beam app 4.21gb
[15-3-2013 02:02:17] Peter Tat: how long did you play the video before the issue occurs?
    [15-3-2013 02:02:27] Anonymous: like 2 3 minuts
[15-3-2013 02:02:48] Anonymous: i am on 5GHZ wifi network so video downloads with 40 Mbit per sec
[15-3-2013 02:03:13] Anonymous: so ram fills up lot faster with faster internet causing issue to be more common probably
    [15-3-2013 02:03:31] Peter Tat: s1 should be 2.4
    [15-3-2013 02:03:39] Anonymous: y

    [15-3-2013 02:06:19] Anonymous: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xtralogic.android.logcollector&feature=search_resu...
[15-3-2013 02:06:29] Anonymous: can try that app use tablet like normaly would with heavy usage etc

  • Cannot re-open project after Out of Memory message

    Hi,
    Problem with Encore CS3.
Here is my problem: I have spent about 2 weeks working on a DVD project made of 2h movie (about 100 files and 2h of subtitles) and about 20 slideshows with a few hundred pictures and music for each slideshow. There are about 15 pages of menus and submenus. All in all it was getting longer and longer to save and open but it was okay.
I eventually tried to produce the DVD in a hard drive folder. Then, after about 14h of computation I got the message "Out of memory". I had to quit at that point. Since then I cannot open the project anymore!
When I open the project I get a window telling me how long it will take to open the project (with an incredibly wrong estimate by the way), once reached the 100%, it never gives me control back anymore. I have to kill the process with the task manager. I have tried to let it work for hours but that does not change much.
The hardware configuration is the following:
At the crash time: Windows XP pro SP2, Duo core processor, 2 GB RAM, a couple of 500GB hard drives connected in USB.
I have since added 2 more GB RAM and now have 4GB with 3.4GB detected (as we all know Windows 32 cannot handle the full 4GB). I thought the add of the memory would make a difference. It does not! Encore uses up to 1.5GB of Ram while trying to open the project (the task manager tells me).
I have tried many many times to re-open my project as I spent too much time on it to give-up easily.
I actually managed to reopen the project a couple of times in a kind of degraded mode by removing some files from the "Transcodes" directory. I then get an error message and sometimes manage to get in. I managed twice amd twice immediately saved the project under a new name (over 7GB of files).
The problem is: I have got a couple of error message while trying to re-setup the project as I left it (remember it was a degraded mode with missing files). I never managed to go to the build stage again and I cannot reopen my project consistently. I now have 3 versions of it. None is working. I am back to starting point, unable to open the project.
If anyone has a solution to recover my project, it is much more than welcome! I hate the idea to start from scratch again. If I have to do so, I am seriously thinking to switch to Vegas and DVD architect because Premiere is unable to handle my new HDV files and I start to be fed-up with all the CS3 bugs. Saying that learning these 2 tools was long enough to not wish to learn 2 new ones.
Thanks for taking time to read all my message.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Well, here is the solution to my own problem. I give it to you in case you get the same problem one day.
The solution is as simple as impossible to find on your own: launch Bridge before launching Encore! Yes, that's it. If Bridge is running when you start Encore and open your project, it all works just fine.
In my case, the project was a bit damaged as many files where not located properly. I just hit the "Skip all" button when prompted and got into my project. Then I re-assigned each unfound file (in italic) with the original one. That was quite easy in the end.
I find it incredible that Encore will work only when Bridge is launched. In that case, I can only recommend to have plenty of RAM. In all cases it is a nasty bug.
I hope it will help someone some day.
    Cheers.
