Wish to rebuild iPhoto library using iphoto library manager
I have an iPhoto library with name 'iPhoto Library LS'. I wish to rebuild it using iPhoto Library Manager. I was just wondering if I can rebuild it and give it new name of 'iPhoto Library' instead?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

Hello Terance/BG,
I wanted to piggyback on this thread. I recently re-built my primary library in iPhoto with the help of iPhoto Library Manager. I noticed that the rebuild created a new library called "Default". I opened with the new re-built library and everything seems to be running fine. Can I now delete the old "iPhoto Library" in order to maintain hard drive space?

Searching iPhoto clips using iPhoto keywords within iMovie ('09)??
Just returned to Apple after a 30 years (yes, 30 years) absence with a lovely refurb iMac.
Main problem now is moving over and categorizing my library of photos and video clips taken with my Canon g9 . iPhoto has got the photo end covered nicely, now that I figured out how to use Bibble to process the raw images.
But videos is another matter. I really do like the way iPhoto uploads and categorizes my videos out of the box, and adding in the same keywords as my pictures makes it a winner for me. BUT, I noticed when looking at the iPhoto clips from within iMovie, the keywords assigned to the clips from within iPhoto are not accessible from within iMovie. Yes, iMovie has its own keywords, but geez must I really go through ALL those clips and re-keyword (new verb ?) them all after already doing it within iPhoto at import ?? AIUI, the keywords are saved in XML files in iPhoto. Isn't there a plugin or something available for iMovie that would allow it to search iPhoto clips using the iPhoto assigned keywords ? it seemed a no-brainer to me, given that these programs are designed to work together at some level, but apparently not. Or am I missing something ?
iMovie has not impressed me as a stand-alone cataloguing program, so I've looked into iDive, Footrack, etc, but those are not accessible from Front Row, whereas there is a little tool that makes clips in iPhoto visible from FR (called Purre).
A compromise might be necessary, but first I want to be sure that what I am suggsting cannot be done.
your collective wisdom will be much appreciated
-bunIt might be worth it to you to keyword in iMovie. It is very different from iPhoto. For example, if you have a 30 minute movie in an Event, and you have 2 minutes of your child as part of the movie, you can keyword those two minutes and go instantly to those frames. In iPhoto, you could put a keyword that your child is in the video, but you would only know that it is somewhere in the 30 minutes and you would have to search for it.
See [this video tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#mark] for how to do simple marking of your video.

IPhoto '08 using iPhoto & Photoship cs5 as editor, choose every time?
I have been using iPhoto '08 for storing all my pictures and am also using it for basic editing. I also use Photoshop CS5 frequently. I know via preferences you can choose your external editor, which will then be your editor by default. I am wondering if there is an option that when you press 'edit' that you are asked to which external editor you want to go? Instead of having to change it under preferences every time...
You don't have to change in Preferences every time. You can right click (or control click) on the image and choose 'Edit in External Editor'.

Can't open iPhoto after using iPhoto library upgrader
I used the iPhoto library upgrader today, hoping that I could then use a newer version of iPhoto. I have iPhoto 6.6 I think. But now iPhoto won't open, so I can't see any of my photos. Where can I download a newer version of iPhoto so I will be able to see my photos again? My iMac is running OS X 10.7.5 and cannot be upgraded to a newer operating system as it is a late 2006 iMac. Please help, I am so upset at losing all my family photos I can barely type this.
1. Make a back up first thing.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
2. If you have iPhoto 6 why are you using the upgrader? -

I can't open photo library using iPhoto v8.0.2
I must have updated the library that was created from v11 and downloaded from the time capsule. Can I load iPhoto v11 on this mac (Powerbook G4), or can I re-create the library to work with v8.0.2?
No and no
older versions of iPhoto can not read new version libraries - you can start over with the original photos anc create a new library in an older version

Now that I have merged multiple iphoto libraries into one -- can I delete the albums that show up with the old library names?
You can do what ever you want - in iPhoto albums are simply pointers to photos so deleting an album has no effect except the album is gone - only when you delete from events or photos view is the photo deleted from the library and disk (after you empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash)

Trying to order iPhoto Book using iPhoto 5 - HELP!
Having spent ages creating an iPhoto Book for my loved one for xmas, I couldn't order/purchase it! I have iPhoto version 5 (5.0.4) and message said I needed to upgrade to iLife (cost £69). Then some technician at local Apple Store told me I would also have to upgrade to Leopard in order to run iLife (cost £129) I currently run my iBook G4 on Mac OS X (10.4.11).
This is turning out to be a very expensive gift! Is this the only way to get my Book? I am worried if I purchase these (can't really afford it anyhow) that I will loose the Book I have created (will it still be there?)..also having problems with my laptop anyhow (wont stay charged - have it permanently plugged into electric socket....and memory seems to be an issue also!)
Any advice would be really welcome...I don't really understand what I should do!
ThanksThanks TD for this prompt response - which is much appreciated. I am a bit of a novice to say the least...so sorry if this is a silly question. Can I download iPhoto 06 or 08 via the internet or do I have to physically purchase a CD and install myself? Can't find Iphoto to buy on ebay and places like Amazon and Play.com seem to sell iLife software?
What do you think? Thanks -
Can't open current photo library using this version of iPhoto 7.1.5
I have recently had to perform a disk repair due to the disk image not mounting. In this process I completed a full backup of my home folder and verify/repair/format of my harddrive. At this time I also added 4G RAM bringing the MacBook up to 5G RAM.
Since the reinstallation of 10.7.5 (Which took about 18hrs) I have none of the iLife package. I have reinstalled from the original disk that I recieved on initial purchase back in 2008. After installation I ran the software update and have updated everything (iTunes, iPhoto etc) I have been able to import all data from my backup via a simple drag & drop. I am now unable to open my iPhoto library (file size 105.43G). I have searched many forums and have been unable to find a solution that is suitable (rebuild library) because as soon as I launch this option it brings up the following message:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
After this I must quit the application. What am I missing? I'm sure it is something quite simple... I'm hoping it is as easy as it was to find the recoveryHD during the reformat of the disk.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Cheers. It sounds like a damaged library. Try the 2 fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
IPhoto crashes on exit and when using iPhoto Library Manager
Hi all,
When attempting to split up my 70,000 iPhoto library using iPhoto Library Manager, the application crashes when attempting to import the photos to a new iPhoto library. This is when it is trying to make iPhoto quit during the import process.
Similarly, iPhoto (under normal use) crashes when attempting to close (or quit) as you normally do. It just freezes and then eventually comes up with an error/crash message showing close, ignore or reopen dialogue box.
Yes I know I have a huge library of 70,000 images and I did do the built-in iPhoto maintenance proceedures (which sped things up when opening the library after startup and general operations I must say) but it still crashes when trying to exit.
I guess it has something to do with the size of the library, but unless I can get software to split into smaller libraries, I don't know what else I can do.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance...Forgot to paste this message I get after it finally shuts down/crashes:

Importing Iphoto 6 library into Iphoto 7
I bought an Imac some months ago. Since then, I've tried to import my IPhoto library (IPhoto 6) to my new Imac Intel (IPhoto7, MacOs 10.5.2), but I have some difficulties with it.
Using an external HD, I copied my IPhoto library to an external HD and then copy it to my new Imac, replacing the old empty IPhoto library. But every times, some events are blank , and every time I open IPhoto7, more and more events are blank.
I have tried to import the library to IPhoto 7, but, then, the date are all mixed up.
I dont know what to do anymore.
Please, I need some help. You do not import - the correct way is what it sounds like you did
Assuming that you have a good, working iPhoto 6 library that works with iPhoto 6, quit iPhoto '08 on your new Mac and drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder to the trash (I'd suggest waiting to empty the trash although it sounds like your current library is not good)
Launch iPhoto and it will convert the library to the new iPhoto '08 format - if some events are blank then try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager
If this does not work trash the latest attempt and copy the iPhoto 6 library over again and rebuild it with iPhoto Library manager before you convert to iPhoto '08
Good Luck

Insufficient disk space when opening Aperture library in iPhoto
I just created a fresh library with 3000 photos (6GB) in Aperture. I then tried to open that library using iPhoto by holding down the Option key on launch but got an alert: "Insufficient Disk Space: There is not enough free space on the disk that contains this library to upgrade it. It is estimated that you need at least 6GB of free space."
OK, I only have 4GB of free space on my HD. But why would iPhoto need to upgrade the library to begin with? I'm using the latest version of both Aperture (3.5.1) and iPhoto (9.5.1) and I thought they use the exact same library. And even if iPhoto needs to upgrade the library, why would it need an extra 6GB when the Aperture library is only 6GB? If opening the library in iPhoto results in increasing the library size from 6GB to 12GB, I'd rather not do it. Am I missing something?OK, I only have 4GB of free space on my HD. But why would iPhoto need to upgrade the library to begin with? I'm using the latest version of both Aperture (3.5.1) and iPhoto (9.5.1) and I thought they use the exact same library. And even if iPhoto needs to upgrade the library, why would it need an extra 6GB when the Aperture library is only 6GB?
iPhoto and Aperture are using the same library, but Aperture has preference settings, that prevent previews or faces from being created. If you open an Aperture library in iPhoto, the library size may increase, since iPhoto may be creating files, that Aperture did not create. Probably iPhoto's estimated was too pessimistic, but opening an Aperture library can increase the library size.
But photograhis is right. You should not be running any applications at all, if you do not have at least 20GBof free disk space. -
Can't access iTunes Library through iPhoto
Hi,
Since I've updated iTunes to 10.5 I can't access it's library using iPhoto. I've created a Slideshow in iPhoto and as I tried do add some music to it iPhoto tells me to run iTunes so it can access its music, yet itunes was actually running and there is no way to access its library through iPhoto.
Futhermore I used to use iTunes albums cover arts as a screen saver. Now I've got a black screen saver with the message that no cover art is present in iTunes though ALL of the present albums have their cover and it perfectly worked before updating to 10.5.
I'm running Lion OSX and also use Beatunes and Tangerine to complete my iTunes library.
Has somebody had the same problem? What can I do to fix this?
Thanks for any help!Sandy
Doesn't play songs purchased on iTunes either,
probably because of the copyright infringement
issues.
It does. You'll need the latest version of iTunes
and the latest version of Quicktime for this
to work.
Regards
TD
Gotcha! It's the QT holding me up them. I have QT Pro and I don't want to update because then I have to PAY again for the Pro part. I learned that the hard way. What a rip off on their part for the users of their Pro version.

iMac G5 20, iBook Mac OS X (10.4.8) Linksys WRT54G Firmware v2.04.4, Comcast Cable -
Hi guys,
My friend recently "lost" all of her photos on her Powerbook G4 and iPhoto wouldn't open. They were still being used for her screensaver but she couldn't find them anywhere in finder using spotlight.
I helped her to re-build the library using iPhoto Library Manager and the files were moved to another hard drive. (hers filled up before the end of the re-build at the first attempt.)
However, even though all of the thumbnails are now back in iPhoto and the albums are happily brimming with photos again, when she tries to browse the rebuilt library in finder, the directry structure has changed. The albums are divided by year as before, but now have random numbers rather than names and not all of the photos are there. Also, they have been moved to random places chronologically. (photos taken in 2008 now in 2003 folder etc.)
Does this need a 'Repair Permissions'? Will this work if the rebuilt library in on an external drive? Any other tips?
Thank you in advance! If you prefix a quote with a > then you'll get that italic effect. Good for clarity.
Thanks.
iPhoto is a database. It's not an image viewer.
I had no idea, as on the surface it look like every other image viewer I've used, but point taken.
The point is simple: do you want to manage and work with the files or the Photos? If you want to work with the Files, use the File Manager - the Finder. If you want to use manage the Photos use iPhoto.
I would say the point is that, for other software I've used, "photo" and "file" are not treated as mutually exclusive. But guess this goes back to the database thing. I would question the amount of extra functionality that this "database" offers over a viewer though.
And this way you have exactly a two ways to find your photos: date taken or Filename.
If you use iPhoto you can search for that photo by date, filename, title, filename, keywords, camera model, lens, aperture and more, plus any compound of them.
I think we're at cross purposes here. You seem to be answering a different point to the one I was making. Mine referred to having to open iPhoto in the first place, so the search options offered within iPhoto are irrelevant.
If you were in email and using Apple's Mail programme then click on the Photo Browser as indicated above. Find the photo and drag it to the message window. Or use the Attach command as indicated in the first illustration above. Or use a media Browser. Or just drag and drop from the iPhoto Window or... or... or...
You mentioned Entourage earlier. Is the same the case for that?
If you have more than 100 photos, if they were taken on more than one date, there is no way the rooting through the iPhoto Library Folder is faster.
With the speed at which iPhoto a) loads and b) scrolls the thumbnails for large albums, I doubt that. (I'm speaking from experience here at least, if nowhere else)
Yes I'm aware what the word means. Here's another way of looking at it: Integrated throughout the OS. There is nothing negative about this. Don't want to use iPhoto? Don't. Don't want to use some of the features? Don't. They're opportunities, that's all.
Freedom to choose is all very well, but when the vast majority of casual or "domestic" users make the migration from PC to Mac, or from whatever photo "management" software they are using to iPhoto, I would wager that they are unaware of how much the integration of iPhoto will affect their ability to work in their chosen way.
(I think that, given the nature and number of similar post on the discussion boards, its a pretty safe bet.)
It certain isn't implicit when iPhoto's dialogue pops up to entice you to import your photos with it.
Depending on which version of iPhoto you use, there are some similar tools to Lightroom, but Lightroom is a pro level application, iPhoto is geared for the domestic point and shoot user primarily. There's a price difference too.
You're right, there is. And I think you get what you pay for. Tons of features and tools, and robust file management.
That said, if you find iPhoto difficult, good luck with Lightroom
I do find iPhoto difficult. However, the difficulty is of its own making.
As a user of Lightroom, I have absolutely no difficulty in using the file management part of the software, which is where the difficulties seem to arise for iPhoto. In fact, its probably more intuitive.
I've certainly not had any of the aforementioned issues regarding permissions, having the wrong font installed, disappearing photos and corrupting libraries by either browsing my file manager, or breathing too hard near the directory structure.
The main issue would now seem to be how to get the photos back safely from iPhoto into a viewer that does essentially as much as iPhoto, but with a lot less fuss.
Is drag and drop from within iPhoto (and having to copy everything from one location to another) the only way to do this?

Importing photos from a PC and creating new library in iPhoto
I recently purchased a MacBook and I would like to transfer all of my photos from my external hard drive to the Mac. I had been using a PC prior to my MacBook purchase, so I am accustomed to organizing all of my pictures on my PC in one "My Pictures" folder with several subfolders within that large folder (e.g. "Landscape Photos," "Portraits," etc.):
1. How should I transfer my photos onto the Mac? Do I copy and paste them into the "Pictures" folder, and then import them into iPhoto? If so, won't that create duplicate copies on my hard drive?
2. I understand that going forward, when I upload pictures from my camera onto the computer (using iPhoto), the pictures will be uploaded into the "Original" folder, all lumped together with every picture that is uploaded. But for instance, if I upload a "landscape" photo, how do I put that in my "Landscape" folder, which is the same folder I was using to classify landscape pictures on my PC? Or does this "folder" classification now go away since iPhoto just organizes it?
3. I use Photoshop to edit certain pictures. If I revise a picture, in which folder am I supposed to save it? Does it become a file "Modified" folder? How would I access this photo to print out at an external photo lab?
I would definitely appreciate any insight from anyone....thanks in advance for your help!!
MacBook 13" 2.16GHz Mac OS X (10.4.9)Hello and welcome to the discussions!
Many of you 'switchers' are having problems with how iPhoto works, and how it differs from other programs you are used to with PCs. Most of you do all of your organizing yourself, but with iPhoto, you can just concentrate on working with your photos and being creative, letting iPhoto worry about what photo is in which folder. Here is an explanation of how iPhoto works: Using iPhoto, from iPhoto Help
iPhoto is designed to let your do all your arranging/naming/organizing into albums from WITHIN iPhoto itself. You should not be tinkering around in any of your iPhotoLibrary Folders outside of iPhoto: Don't Tamper
Another good explanation of iPhoto and how it works is in this thread
And, here is a discussion thread on migrating from Picasa to iPhoto: iPhoto structure
Be sure to read Terence's excellent explanation.
Finally, for your questions:
(1)You should be able to get your photos into iPhoto by opening up iPhoto and dragging your photo folders into the main window of iPhoto. iPhoto will create a film roll for each folder. If the folder has subfolders, film rolls will be created for them also. By naming the folders when you import them, you will be able to keep the same organization in your film rolls. iPhoto automatically stores the photos in iPhotoLibrary folder in Pictures folder. You do not need to put them into Pictures yourself.
You need to learn about iPhoto's album system, where you create albums in the Source pane and selectively put your photos into them. These albums actually contain aliases of the photos, not the photos themselves, so a photo's alias can be placed into many albums, but the photo can be in only one film roll.
(2) If you don't want your photos downloaded from your camera in a lump sum, use ImageCapture (in Applications) to selectively download your photos into separate folders on your desktop, and then import each folder into iPhoto where each folder becomes a separate film roll. You can either keep the original downloaded photos on your computer, or you can delete the downloaded folders after you have imported the photos into iPhoto.
(3) You can set your 'Edit' preferences in iPhoto to open up PhotoShop for all editing, and you save the photo back to iPhoto afterwards. It will be in the same film roll.
Post back if you have more questions.
