WISM Controller and 6500 Switch power cycled

Has anyone come across this issue where if the 6500 switch is reloaded or power cycled that 8 out of 10 interfaces on the WISM become administratively down this does not happen if you reload just the wism or power cycle the controller.
the softwear loaded on the switch is as follows.
Supervisor Engine 720 10GE with f/w 8.5(2) and s/w 12.2(33)SXH
WiSM WLAN Service Module with f/w 12.2(14r)S5 and s/w 12.2(33)SXH
any suggestions as to how to sort this so it loads all the interfaces as up from the power cycle or reload of the switch would be welcome have already made sure the config is saved but still happens.

1. I believe a 6509 can handle 5 WiSMs, though I've found 4 more realistic when considering the need for uplinks and service modules.
2. Based on 5 WiSMs, you can have 1500 per chassis. Again, I tend to stick with 4, or 1200 APs per chassis.
3. There is no hard limit that I am aware of. WCS on a VERY high-end server can handle ~2500 APs when running Linux WCS. As with the above, this works well with 1 WCS per 2 chassis if each has 4 WiSMs.

  • Problems between a Wireless Controller and a Switch.

I have a Wireless Controller 4402 connected to one sw2960G.
I configured the controller with LAG and the switch (sw2960G) with etherchanel.
I connected the controller 2 distribution ports to the 2 ports of the switch (configured with etherchanel).
It worked like it should work.
But the problem is like this: if I take one cable that is connected to the switch and unplugged that cable from the switch (if that cable is the one connected to controllers port one) I have connectivity between both machines.
If I plug in the switch the cable connected to controller port one and take the other cable and unplugged that cable from the switch I stop the connectivity between the two machines.
I think that was not supposed to happen… because the LAG in the controller should put every AP in the second controller's port, and the connectivity between the machines should not end.
    Can any one help me?
Can any one tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rui

With LAG enabled in the controller I think I can have only one ap-manager interface.
The LAG will (it is supposed to) do the load balance automatically.
I mean, if one of the interfaces is “down” the other will have to coupe with all the AP's.
I should have always connection between the controller and the switch.
The STP of the controller is configured by default (STP Mode = OFF).
In the case of etherchannel load balance… I saw the Cisco documentation and I did not saw any thing about that. I think that The LAG as to do that for the controller… I'm right about that?
I will see the link that you advised…
    Can you help me?
    Thanks,

  • WRT350N and Cable Modem Power Cycle

I have the cable modem and linksys router plugged into the same power surge. I noticed that I need to power up the cable modem first in order to register ISP info with my broadband service. If I powered up the router and modem at the SAME time(along with the desktop), my router does not configure the DCHP address on time, and my PC will not have Internet Connectivity. Internet Explorer web pages (including the default home page) will load very slow or produce an error after a while, and if you view your router Status page you'll see no Current Time available. At this time, I am forced to Release/Renew IP address and continually hit Refresh on the status page to regain Internet Connectivity and correct data(Time stamp, DNS, Domain name, Default gateway,etc....). It doesn't sound like a big deal, but what if you're not home and another user boots up my PC and sees no Internet connection? Manually renewing IP address info can become a hassle, when the router's DHCP service should automatically do this in the first place.
Now you have to use a specific Power Cycle, and write it down for guest users, when your network devices have been shut down. The cable modem has to be  powered up before the router. This gives the modem some time to receive the proper ready lights on its LED status. Plugging the router in seconds later makes the reconnection occur smoother and automatically. As you can understand, this usually doesn't occur when you leave your network on for days, weeks, at a time.
This could be a specific ISP issue, but if your network starts up otherwise, please respond.

That status page has been configured many times. How many times do you think I've been in and out of that 192.168.1.1 interface? DHCP was enabled and automatic from the start, and the MAC address is cloned.
The time frame it takes for the cable modem to register ISP information and where the router accepts and implements those settings is where the problem lies. The 2 devices are not in sync if they are powered on together.  Letting the cable modem initialize first makes the router authenticate the network settings better. The router obviously loses DNS settings when it is shut down or there is a power outage. I don't want to release and renew IP addresses every time the pc,modem, and router are powered on from a cold start. The other hassle is unplugging the modem for 15 seconds, replugging, then rebooting the pc, while others might constantly reset the router instead. Like I said, other guests/users might not know what to do in this instance. There are times when the network is shutted down periodically and a clean restart is needed unfortunately. Having a UPS back up would probably be a good solution.

  • DHCP not expiring and unit needing power cycling

I've had my AirPort Extreme N gigabit router for about two days now and am having several issues. I upgraded to the 7.2.1 firmware, but that didn't help. I've noticed that DHCP leases, after expiring, aren't releasing and therefor aren't allowing DHCP devices to reconnect. The only work around for this has been to blow out the DHCP lease window exponentially. Secondly, are the activity lights for the lan ports on the back of the Unit supposed to remain on? Mine keep turning off and I have to power cycle the unit to get them to come back on...before they turn off again. I've also had issues where Gigabit Ethernet cards cannot make connections until I reboot the unit. Also, how warm should this device be?

    Thanks for the replies,
I have already tried a full power cycle before posting, should have made that clear in my first post, sorry. Straight after the power cut, I shut everything down for 10 minutes, and then powered all device up one by one.
Also, I just tried changing the beginning address from '192.168' to '10.0' and this made no difference to the issue.
    When trying to get an IP address through DHCP, I receive;
    IP '169.254.117.112'
    subnet mask '255.255.0.0'
    and empty router field
which is extremely strange, as I used to get a subnet mask of '255.255.255.0' and the router's IP has not changed since getting the TC.

  • Video conferencing, voice, VLAN and Catalyst 2950, 3500 and 6500 switches

We have a Cat6500 with MSFC in the COre/Distribution, mix of 2950 and 3524XL in the closets in the HQ. Every closet will be on one VLAN. There are 5 remote sites on a Frame with 768 CIR. There will be one Polycom VC station in the HQ per closet, one Polycom per remote site. Additionally, every PC everywhere will be using desktop NetMeeting for VC. CallManager and IP Phones will be everywhere. My questions are:
    1. should I put the Polycom on the same VLAN as the PC's with COS set to 4 at layer 2 and IP Precedence set to 4 at layer3? IP Phones are already on a seperate voice VLAN .
    2. Should I put Polycom on it's own VLAN and seperate from the PC VLANs? If I do it this way should I set COS and IP precedence for the PC's with NetMeeting?
    3. any sample config. for the Catalyst switches?

    Hi all,
Sorry for not replying earlier. We found a workaround, as quoted below:
Changing How Security Manager Responds to Device Messages
Security Manager has built-in responses to many of the response messages that can be encountered when configuring a device. You might find that messages Security Manager treats as errors are messages that you want to ignore or treat as informational. Although you can configure your deployment jobs to ignore errors, you might instead want to update Security Manager to treat specific messages differently. To change how Security Manager treats a message, you need to update the DCS.properties file in \CSCOpx\MDC\athena\config folder in the installation directory (usually c:\Program Files).
Use a text editor such as NotePad to update the file. It is easiest to determine the message you want to ignore by looking at the transcript of a deployment job that encountered the error using these steps:
Step 1 Select the job with the error message from the Deployment Manager window.
Step 2 Click the Transcript button in the Deployment Details tab to open the transcript.
Step 3 Identify the error text that you want to ignore.
Step 4 Locate the appropriate warning expressions property in the DCS.properties file. For example, for PIX devices the property is called dev.pix.warningExpressions, whereas for IOS devices the property is called dev.ios.warningExpressions.Conversely, you can make device responses that are not tagged with the Error prefix to appear as error messages. To do this, add the message to the Error Expressions list (for example, dev.pix.ErrorExpressions).
Step 5 Add the error text to the warning expressions list. The warning message should be a generic regular expression string. Except for the last expression, you must delimit all expressions with “$\”. For example, if the message you want to ignore is “Enter a public key as a hexadecimal number,” enter the following string: .*Enter a public key as a hexidecimal number .*$
Step 6 Restart the CiscoWorks Daemon Manager
This has resolved the issue successfully

Everything is plugged in correctly as I have been using it succesfully for the last 3 months until now. Would it be safe to say that I need to RMA it?

No offense but you and many others on this board give MSI too much credit. These boards are widely known to have problems and MSI obviously isn't fixing them very well because I am not the only person that has got this power cycling issue.
Also you implying that I was the one that caused my board to fail is ridiculous. The board died, I replaced it and it booted up fine so I obviously did nothing wrong. Don't be a [censored] about it.
    Let's just all cool down.
As for the statement which I have highlighted in Bold, that is a very general statement to make. To begin with, the problem of P67 chipsets lies with Intel and Intel has issued an official notice several months ago on the issues. Though revisions like B3 version had been released to solve the glitches found in the P67 chipsets, no one knows how many other problems are still unannounced thus no one dares to speculate. Do note, that the P67 chipset problem affects all manufacturers worldwide as everyone only gets their P67 from one source, which is obviously, Intel.
As far as I'm concerned about stability, the below quoted is what I have done and have been doing all this while before any tweaking starts.
Quote from: NovJoe on 18-November-11, 10:16:31
You can overclock the system but since you have experienced instability before, that is the reason why you should do everything under stock to make sure it is rock stable before you start to tweak it again.
Trust me, 1 week is a good time frame for monitoring. For all my gaming systems that I build for my clients, I always make sure that I have a 1.5 weeks allowance to do monitoring and testings in stock before I hand over the system to them. Thereafter, anything above stock, it is all in their hands to manage.

I went to the Troubleshooting Help here and performed a power cycle. Now, it won't even boot up. The power is working fine. What do I need to do, and what do you think caused the original problem?

Hi! bec! I don't run W8. You could have picked up a Virus ect. Hard to really tell. There will be better replies during the week. I would restore back to factory. If you were infected, that should cure that problem. You could also make a system repair disk and try to boot with it. It can be made with any computer that is running W8. If you don't have that option, I guess it's back to factory.

  • Same wlan both locally switched and centrally switched

    Scenario:
    1 virtual wireless controller
50 access points, some of them some local to the controller (same site), other on remote sites, all in flexconnect mode.
Is there a way for a wlan to be locally switched for a group of ap's, essentialy those local to the controller, and centrally switched for other groups of ap's, in fact those placed on remote sites?
I've tried configuring flexconnect groups, and ap groups, but no luck, I've found no way to override the globally configured flag "flexconnec local switching".
I've also tried to create two identical wlans, one locally switched and the second globally switched, but the wlc refuses to activate the second one since it has the same ssid of the first one.
    Regards,
    Massimo.

Since you have vWLC all AP needs to be in FlexConnect mode (If you got a normal WLC you can keep HQ AP in local mode & Remote AP in Flex mode to achieve this)
I think in your case you have to either choose "Central Switching" or "local switching" for your APs.

  • WRT54GX2 Power cycles every 75 seconds

I have three wrt54gx2 v.1 wireless routers.  All three in different subnets but basically configured the same way with the exception of the ip addresses.  Two of the routers power cycle about every 75 seconds.  I backed up the configurations (in case a firmware upgrade went bad) and magically the router stopped power cycling.  I upgraded the firmware from v.1.01.14 to v. 1.01.21 not believing that backing up the configurations had anything to do with the problem.  The router rebooted after successfully completing the firmware upgrade and the intermittent power cycling started again at about the same time interval as before the upgrade.  Does this make any sense to anyone?  I've been through the forum and technical support but I can't seem to find anything with exactly the same symptoms.  Any help anyone can be would be appreciated immensely...this thing is driving me crazy.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  DO NOT use the configuration file that you saved.
The router's configuration file contains the router's initialization data, that is, the data that is read in when the router starts up.  If you have an error in this data, it can potentially cause bizarre router behavior.  This is the reason that you must setup the router again from scratch.
Please let me know whether or not this helped.

  • U-verse, Time Capsule, and 2 Switches, OfficeJet 6500

I know just enough about networks to screw them up, so I'm asking for help. I've had U-verse for about a year and no problems. Connection went from U-verse modem then out one port (Let's call this Port 1) to a computer and out another port (Port 2) to a Time Capsule. From the TC one port went to a comp and another to a switch that connected to U-verse DVR, DVD, and XBox. Just got an HP OfficeJet 6500 and tried to hook it up. Added another switch at the end of the Port 1 cable to split between printer and comp. Worked great. Tried to set up printer from 2nd comp (attached to TC) and couldn't find it. AirPort Utility told me I had double Nats since TC was still configred as a router. Went to bridge mode and that was when the problems ensued. Both computers can't find the printer, and my computer told me today that it had the same IP address as another device on the network (This is the one at the end of Port 1). That had NEVER happened before.
So the big question I guess is, do I have my network set up correct? U-verse wireless off, TC creating wireless network in bridge mode. If this looks correct any suggestions on the printer issue?

The TC in Bridge Mode would be the correct setting since you already have a router (the U-verse device) "upstream" from the Time Capsule.
Whenever you make a change in a network component...routers in particular....you always want to perform a complete power cycle on the entire network.
Power everything down....U-verse, TC, computers, switches, printers.....order is not important
Wait a few minutes, then start the U-verse gateway first and let it run a moment by itself
Start the TC the same way
Work out through the network starting devices in sequence one at a time until everything is powered back up
You may need to reconfigure the printers again so that they find the correct "path" on your "new"' network

    Hi
Who is anybody using a WISM with FWSM on CAT 6500 switch ?
    Are there any problem,if use?
And How can I set them to connecting each other ?
I have founded a document relate it on the cisco website that name is Integrating Cisco WiSM and Firewall Service Module.
I have a question concern it.
Why do I have make a VRF to communication each other ?
    Please let me know.

As far as the FWSM is concerned you can have each of the wireless vlans come in to the same context of the FWSM and then just add those vlans to the FWSM as separate vlans.
