WiSMs appear to be auto-containing rogues

(This appears to be the converse situation of another relatively recent post. I thought it might be better to have a separate thread rather than muddy up that conversation).
I have a relatively new deployment of 8 WiSMs controllers (4 of which are currently production and 4 are available for failover). The WiSMs are running code v5.2.157.0 and I have about 50 AP1252's split between the 4 production controllers.
We also have WCS v5.2.130.0 in the environment to manage the controllers. I am a little concerned by some messages I am seeing on the WCS which seem to indicate the WiSMs are auto-containing rogues even though I have verified there are no Auto-Contain features enabled on any of the WiSM controllers.
Here is a sample of a WCS log entry which concerns me:
Rogue AP '00:23:75:07:68:b0' with SSID 'qwest5184' and channel number '4' is detected by AP 'xxxx-2-a4' Radio type '802.11b' with RSSI '-92' and SNR '5'. RogueAP contained.
I can dig up more of these but all seem to indicate an action is being taken on Rogue APs even though we specifically have these options unselected (under Security | Wireless Protection Policies | Rogue Policies | General) and their are no Rogue Rules defined either.
Is there anywhere else I should be checking where something like this could be enabled?
I need to make sure I am not being a problem before I can go to my neighbors and expect the same.
Thanks for any ideas.

Did you get a resolution to this?
I have the same issue, but am unsure if my WLC's are auto containing rogues, or whether WCS is just falsely reporting the containment.
I see no auto containment setting anywhere on my WLC (4.2.170.0), so I doubt very much it is auto containing.
Anyone know where I can check/look?
My WCS version is 5.2.130.

  • Auto Disable Rogue Accounts

We have a requirement to automatically disable any accounts within Active Directory (and/or other targets) when OIM cannot match the account to a known user. This could happen during target recon or as a separate scheduled task.
What would be the most efficient way to accomplish this task? Your ideas are appreciated.
    Kerry

    Hi,
Both the scheduled task and Event handler solution will work however in case of task you have the option to schedule in offline hours. May be you already thought but just to mention-
    1. In terms of Event handler you have to put an extra check for real event received which couldn't link to the user for some error as Event Linked/Process Matched will also go via Event Received. Kevin can confirm this!
    2. Are you running the reconciliation for disable users. In that case put a check to filter those events!!

Okay... well at least its not the WLC code or AP tht is an issue.  RLDP whould only be used on monitor mode access points, When used with access points that serve clients, the AP when detecting a rogue, will drop all associated clients.  The AP's will do rogue detection anyways, so no need enable RLDP.

  • APs being contained as rogues by an external system

A rogue containment policy is being initiated against my organization's APs and I do not have the tools/knowledge necessary to track down its point of origin. What tools or steps are required to identify who is containing an AP?
    Thanks

I currently have this weird issue too
I have no idea why. It started yesterday and continued today. I know that some people are in that area playing around with some Zigbee RFID tags, but I don't think that should make a problem?
    Here from the controller logfile:
    wism-1250-2: *Apr 09 14:40:03.582: %LWAPP-1-AP_CONTAINED: spam_lrad.c:25558 AP 1200b-6106-1 is being contained on slot 0
Containment is after around 1 minute over (WCS sends two mails, one with containment and one with CLEAR). I don't know if the users have some issues because of this, so far only one complained, but that could also be because he's using an Apple and not a stadard client.
The controller logfile doesn't show a "resolve" of the containment.
Auto containment of rogues is disabled on the controller.
Any ideas? Or did you ever receive an answer from your tac case?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

  • Items appearing outwith container area

    Hi,
I have a container area within which I am holding everything on my page so that it will be centred on any user's screen.  I've set the horizontal position to 'centre' on the background tab of the css rule definition of my container area to do this.
I then added a marquee and a DIV Tag for an area for my menu.  Both of these things aren't showing within my container area but I don't understand why.  In the line just above the property inspector it is showing as these items being within the <div#ContainerArea>
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks very much
    Nicola

Set the position to "Relative" as I said earlier (this will center the page)
Just to set the record straight, there is no need to set position: relative because all CSS divisions are relative by default.  And relative positioning has nothing to do with page centering.
Page centering is accomplished with CSS like so:
    #container {
         width: 900px /**adjust as needed**/
         margin: 0 auto;
To add other divs within that div, you must put the cursor at the beginning of the "Content goes her for container" wording and then add additional divs that will appear within the first "Container" one. Then you just adjust the size and position of those DIVs as you need them
Sorry, but once again you do not need to position divisions at all if you use margins, padding & floats. Absolute Positioned divisions have their place in certain situations.  I.e. drop menus, sticky text, lightboxes and disjointed rollovers.  But they fail as a primary layout device. Much better to use default CSS instead of positioned.

  • Rogue AP Containment

I tested the capability of containing rogue AP over the air in a lab environment. It works great, but I have the following questions/concerns:
    1. How could I detect if others/hackers do this to our wireless network?
    2. Will the WLCs be able to detect this kind of stuff?
    3. Any links or documents on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Binh

Be very careful when you are using AP Containment.  In some countries, if you contain the wrong AP/WLAN, you and/or your organization can be liable.
The WLC/WCS can conduct AP Containment very well.  I know because I've used this on Rogues AP found WITHIN the premises.

  • DataTips always appear in ViewStack container

I have a Panel container set to a specific width and height.
Inside this is a ViewStack with percentHeight and
    percentWidth set to 100.
Each ViewStack child is a VBox with a specific height and
width set so that it fits in the Panel without scrollbars
    appearing.
Each VBox contains a List control with percentHeight and
percentWidth set to 100 and with showDataTips set to true.
The problem is that the data tips pop up on every item of
every list regardless of whether they extend beyond the width of
    the VBox or not.
If I remove the ViewStack from the chain of children, the
    problem disappears.
It looks to me as though the ViewStack has an unusual way of
sizing itself compared with other containers and that this could be
    the cause of the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas how this problem can be resolved.
    Doug

As you have set a null layout on the content pane, the BorderLayout.CENTER in this code linecontentPane.add(scrollingArea, BorderLayout.CENTER);is ignored.
As you have not set the bounds (or size and location) of scrollingArea, it is not seen. A null layout will not respect the preferredSize you have set for scrollingArea.
It's far better that you learn to use Layout managers. There's a good tutorial here:

  • A BUG in the Genres and Rankings for Auto Playlists

I recently spent too much time ranking each of my many songs on my iTunes hoping to set up auto-playlists that will contain my favorite songs among various genres. However, when i went to create an auto playlist with more than one genre at a ranking, say, greater than 1 star, no songs would appear on my auto playlist.
however, when i tried the converse, and selected genres NOT to be included in the auto list at a ranking greater than 1 star, i was able to create my desired auto playlist. Doing this procedure among 20 or so genres, however, is needlessly tediously.
I would like for Apple to please fix this bug in the software.
    thank you
    dell   Windows XP Pro

    eh, I don't think it's a bug.
    Match ALL of the rules
    Genre=Jazz
    Genre=Alternative
Sure, you'll get an empty playlist.
If you change it to Match ANY of the rules, you'll get songs from both genres.
But I do know what you're saying, other people have wanted the playlists to have an OR function.
You can get what you want in two steps
    Match ANY
    Genre=Jazz
    Genre=Alternative
call this playlist "Favorite Genres" for example.
    Then have another playlist
    Match ALL
    playlist= Favorite Genres
My Rating is greater than 1 star

  • How to Prevent or Block Rogue APs from Joining Your Wired or Wireless WLANs

Hi all, I deployed a WLAN with 1 WLC 4400 and 5 1252AP. I do not see the way to Block Rogue APs from Joining the Wired or Wireless WLANs

    PART 1
There are three parts to this:
    1. detect - automatic
    2. classify - by default APs are untrusted/unknown, various methods can be configured to classify them as trusted and threat (connected to wired network).
    3. over the air contain (aka mitigate) - in 4.x this is manual, in 5.x you can configure auto-containment
First you need to detect. WLC does this automatically out of the box. It listens the air for unknown APs, clients and ad-hocs. Are you seeing Rogue APs under Monitor > Rogues > Rogue APs?
Next, you can manually classify rogue APs as "known" (internal or external). Starting with 5.0 you can also build rogue rules based on RSSI, SSID, Clients, etc. If an AP is classified as "known" (internal or external), WCS stops alerting you.
Another key classification piece is to detect whether or not the rogue AP is physically connected to your network which is a high security risk. There are three ways WLC can detect it and neither of them is automatic. You must configure these methods manually.
    1. Rogue AP Detector, aka ARP sniffing. You have to dedicate one AP as "Rogue Detector" (change AP mode from local to rogue detector). Configure the port the AP is connected to as switchport mode trunk (normally it's switchport mode access). Rogue Detector AP turns off and doesn't use its radios. When WLC detects rogue APs it can also detect the MAC addresses of any clients associated to that rogue APs, and the rogue detector AP simply watches each hardwire trunked VLAN for ARP requests coming from those rogue AP clients. If it sees one, WLC automatically classifies the rogue AP as "threat" indicating that the rogue AP is physically connected to your network. It doesn't actually do anything with the rogue AP, it simply classifies it and alerts you. Also, keep in mind that this method doesn't work if the rogue AP is a Wireless Router, because Wireless Routers NAT and ARP requests don't propagate to the wire.
    2. RLDP. Rogue Location Discovery Protocol. This feature is by default turned off and can be enabled under Security > Wireless Protection Policies > Rogue Polices. This feature works only when the rogue SSID is open, meaning that it's not using WEP/WPA/802.1x. When you enable RLDP, your WLC will pick some AP (you can't pick manually) which hears Rogue AP traffic, it will temporarily shut off its radio, turn it into a client, and instruct it to associate to the Rogue AP as client (this is where the requirement comes in for the Rogue SSID to be open authentication). Once associated, AP gets a DHCP IP through Rogue AP, it then sends a special small UDP port 6352 RLDP packet to every possible WLC's IP address (mgmt ip, ap manager ip, dynamic int IPs). If WLC gets one of those packets, it means that rogue AP is physically connected to your network. This method will work when Rogue AP is a Wireless Router. But this method is not recommended. It has an adverse effect on your wireless clients because RLDP AP goes offline for a period of time disconnecting your clients and forcing them to associate to another AP. Also, keep in mind, that WLC runs this RLDP process *once* per detected rogue AP. It doesn't periodically do this, it only does it once. In some later WLC versions, you can configure RLDP to run only on "monitor mode" APs, eliminating impact on your clients. Also, you can manually trigger RLDP for a rogue AP from CLI "config rogue ap rldp initiate ". You can "debug dot11 rldp" to see the process.
    3. Switchport Tracing (need WCS, and WLC 5.1). This is a later feature that requires WCS. You can add your Catalyst switches to WCS, and WCS will look at CDP information and MAC tables on your switches to detect whether or not Rogue AP is connected to your network. This works with secured and NAT rogues. You can also *manually* instruct WCS to shut down the switchport that Rogue AP is connected to.

  • WCS msg - WLC "containing" valid AP?

    Hi All,
I often see this message from WCS (v6).
AP 'LAP01' is being contained. This is due to rogue device spoofing AP 'LAP01' BSSID or targetting AP 'LAP01' BSSID. - Controller Name: WLC1
Where LAP01 is actaully an AP associated with WLC1. Why would the WLC try and contain one of its own AP's?
Or am i reading the message incorrectly?
Seems to happen on a number of WLC's and seemingly random AP's.
RLDP is disabled and the auto contain options are disabled.
    Any ideas?

Are all of your WLCs in the same Mobility Group?
Sometimes the best way to troubleshoot these cryptic messages is to just open a TAC case and ask.

  • Best container to place caption text field?

In Strobe Media Playback 1.5.1, there are two primary MediaContainers: mediaContainer and mainContainer. Which container should I place a caption element (I'm extending the Widget class for my CaptionElement class)? I would also like the CaptionElement to be "controlBar" aware so it will appear above an auto-hide controlbar and reposition lower when the control bar is hidden. Many thanks in advance!
    -Robert

My solution was to pass a reference to the ControlBarElement to my CaptionElement (which actually is a Widget, not a MediaElement), and then in the layout() method, look to see if controlBar is visible and if it is set to autoHide. The layout() method seems to be called automatically (nice!) whenever the control bar element is added or removed.
You can see a demo of the caption player working here:

we want to know the cause of this log messages and how to solve them quickly.

correct. "use the same format as received" means if the original message was sent as HTML, plain text, or RTF, when you reply or forward, keep the message as HTML, RTF, or plain text.
Some mail programs also have an option to automatically make any forwarded message an attachment instead of allowing your response to be added to the top.
It may not be in options....I just found an article reading:
To forward the message as a message, choose Message > Forward, or click the Forward button in the toolbar. To forward the message as an attachment, choose Message > “Forward as Attachment.”
You can set options for forwarding messages, including whether to quote the text of the original message and increase the quote level, as well as how much of the original text to include. Choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, and then use the options in the Responding section.
So the as attachment or as inline text may lurking under the Compose preference

  • How to delete the existing list and prevent auto-completed web sites?

Hi, As soon as I start to type "www" in the address bar, a list of previously visited web sites appears, as if auto-completed. They seem rather random, and not necessarily the most recent ones. I have tried resetting Safari, deleting the cache, looking these sites up in the various plist folders in the Library, using Safari in Private mode, etc. but it still happens. I find it a nuisance.
How do I delete the existing sites, and how do I prevent more from appearing in the future?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    HI,
    Go to Safari/Preferences - AutoFill
    Click where it says: Edit
You can Remove All or edit which url's you don't want.
