With airport card inserted, Mac G4 won't start.

I just inserted an Airport Extreme Card into my PowerMac G4 (MDD+Firewire 800).
Now, when I go to start up my computer, the fans just blow really loud and it doesn't start up. Nothing on the monitor, no apple start up sound. Nothing.
I did an experiment and took out the card, and then restarted it, and it worked just fine. So I know that its the airport card.
But why would it do this?

Hi-
Did you install it correctly?

Mac mini won't start up. just get a grey screen with the apple and it freezes.  Please help.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Airport Card Freezing Mac

    Hi,
My airport card in my mac has been working fine up until the other day. Now I cannot connect to my Airport Express, or any other wireless network for that matter
At first I thought it was my Airport Express, but now im not so sure. When I boot up and turn on my Airport Card its gives me the colored pinwheel and freezes completely.
I can connect to internet via the lan port (wired) to my modem however when i try to connect via wireless it freezes.
Is my airport card faulty? is there anyway you can test it?
Why would it stop working all of a sudden? I have removed the card and reinserted it (powered down of course) and the arial is connected firmly.
I dont have another card to check it.
    Help!

I am also having the EXACT same problem with one of my Macs.
I have a PowerMac Quicksilver 867mhz G4 and a 12" PowerBook G4. About a year ago my PowerMac froze with the color wheel spinning. I had a lot of graphics programs open at the time and I figured I was trying to do too much...so I restarted. When I rebooted the computer would freeze as soon as it got through the start up screen. Through the troubleshooting process I tried unplugging the airport card in my PowerMac and it started like a charm.
I can’t figure out for the life of me what’s wrong. With the airport card plugged in, the computer freezes and will eventually (after 10-20min) stop trying to find a signal on the airport and finish the start-up process. When I use the pull down menu from the icon from the icon in the menu bar, it doesn’t find my base station or any of my neighbors. My laptop on the other hand finds my base station and 3 of my neighbors’ - full strength. My work laptop (a PC) finds my base station as well and has no problems connecting.
It shows up in the system profiler and in the network configuration box, but says it isn't in range of any networks. I have moved the computer and the airport into the same room within inches of each other, and still no luck.
I took the PowerMac into the Apple store w/ my airport express and magically everything worked perfectly. The apple “genius” said it must have been his magic touch. Unconvinced, I get it home and set everything back up. Like I expected, I have the same problem as before. No signal. So I take it to work, to a friend's house, etc and it WORKED! Everywhere except my apartment. So I figured it must be interference of some sort. I don't have a cordless phone, so I thought it must be one of my neighbors. I have tried deleting plists for the airport, making sure the computer is properly grounded, you name it. The only thing I haven't tried is replacing the card or using an antenna booster. I've pretty much given up on it until I buy a new computer.
Right now I am running the internet over airport to my poor ol’ PowerBook with internet sharing enabled and then running that connection through the ethernet cable to my PowerMac. Talk about a crazy contraption, but it works.
    Please help!

  • Airport Card, Power Mac G4- Mac Pro

I am purchasing a Mac Pro in the very near future and would like to know if I will be able to swap out the Airport card from my Power Mac to the Mac Pro. I didn't find anything in the DIY section of the Apple Support which leads me to believe that Apple doens't want consumers to touch this.

Unlikely, the PMG4 probably used an original 802.11b Airport card.
Mac Pro will at least require an AirPort Extreme card, and may even have AirPort installed as a built-in if you buy it BTO.

and, what is even more strange...
I actually bought 2 Billy Joel songs NY State of Mind from Essential Billly Joel and Italian Restaurant from Greatist Hits vol 1.  Neither song would play.
I went back the Apple store and tried to re-download NYSOM.  It let me do it for free.  Before I checked I tried to re-dowload IR but inadvertantly selected same song but from The Stranger.  I had to pay for this one.  The re-downloaded NYSOM still didn't work but IR I bought from Stranger worked.  So, I bought NYSOM from Greatest Hits vol 1. Didn't work!!!  Tried again and bought from another album, Turnstiles, and that one worked.  So, I bought 5 songs, only 2 of which will work.
So, now I ask - is there any way to get my money back?

  • My Mac Mini won't start. The Power light blinks continusly (not pulses)

My New Mac Mini won't start up. I bought it online from J&R a week ago. My monitor says "no input detected" and the power light blinks. I recently fed it the gray mac os x install disk one, which it won't give back. Holding the mouse button when it turns on doesn't have any effect. So now i can't put a disk in or start it up.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
No video with the power light blinking once per second means either bad or no memory. See this Apple note: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303083 . Specifically, below is from that note:
If the computer detects no SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory, also referred to as RAM) or the RAM installed does not meet the appropriate specifications, the screen will remain black but the power LED on the front of the computer will blink once per second to signal the error. This error condition may be due to physically damaged RAM, installing the incorrect type of RAM, or not having RAM installed.
Has it ever worked since you got it? If not, you should call J&R and tell them they sent a dead on arrival system, and ask for a replacement (ask them to send a will call tag or prepaid label to send the non-working machine back).

  • Mac Mini won't start and constantly makes disc ejecting noise

My Mac Mini won't start. It was working fine, then just locked up and won't start again. When I push the start button it just makes this repeated disc ejecting noise from the DVD drive. It doesn't make the chime noise or display anything on the monitor. I've disconnected the optical drive, but it didn't help. Then it just doesn't start at all. I thought that if I would disconnect the optical drive, that it would ignore it and just boot off the hard drive, but nothing happened. The power light comes on. Then, if I hold down the power button for 10 seconds it shuts down. The fan operates. It just never attempts to boot up. I can't put in a system DVD because the optical drive is just in eternal eject mode.
If you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

    I have the same situation.
I think the drive thinks it has a disc to eject or part of the mechanism is stuck and can't return to it's resting position. I was going to disconnect as you tried but now I think I'll try to disassemble the drive to see if there might be some debris jamming things up.
Please let me know if you solve the problem.

  • Mac Mini won't start after installing OS X 10.6.3

My Mac Mini won't start after installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. When I turn it on, the Apple logo appears and the initialization line starts to fill, but it suddenly stops. It does that again and stops at the same point, but this time it shuts down. What should I do?

If you are coming from 10.5.8, hopefully you backed up your important data first. Your mini will need at minimum, 1 GB of RAM to install Snow Leopard and at least 5 GB of storage remaining on your boot drive.
I treat 10.6.3 as a fresh, full install over a 10.5.8 system. That means I choose Disk Utility from the Installer's menu and repartition the boot drive as a single partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format, and use the GUID partition scheme from the options button. At this point, while still in Disk Utility, I would verify the drive under First Aid.
Then I turn the installer loose, and reboot into a working 10.6.3 system, ready for the software updates that take the machine to 10.6.8.
So, following the above guidelines, reinstall 10.6.3.

  • My mac mini won't start up!

My mac mini won't start up but it will turn on, staying at the gray apple logo screen and nothing else.
I came home yesterday and it wouldn't 'wake up' from 'sleep' mode so I turned it off and tried to turn it back on. There's a netflix cd in there that I also can't get out. My friend suggested i slip a piece of paper in there and that it will eject, but this isn't working (maybe I'm doing this wrong?)
    help! thanks.

I have the same problem. In addition, the same happens when attempting to boot from a DVD. I was able to boot it up in Target Disc Mode, and even erase the internal HD entirely, but I still cannot boot from DVD to reinstall the OS. I have tried the SMC reset, but to no avail. Also, while I can reset the PRAM, I cannot reset the Open Firmware. Any suggestions?

  • Ipad won't connect to itunes with sim card inserted

    I have an interesting situation.
I bought a second hand Ipad 32GB WiFi + 3G from a user who was upgrading to the iPad 2. They kept their SIM card and we purchased a replacement SIM card from AT&T's website. (The original SIM card was also from AT&T)
Without the SIM card inserted, the Ipad works perfectly, the same as my other WiFi-only Ipads do. When I insert the SIM card, however, even with the 3G service turned off in settings, Windows & ITunes will no longer even recognize that the Ipad is connected (that's to say powering off the Ipad, installing SIM card, powering Ipad back up and then connecting it w/ the same known working USB Sync cable).
Anyone have any ideas? Right now I'm not even worried about using the 3G, I'd just like to have the SIM card installed so that the 3G can be setup & activated if / when it's needed and we're out and about. Besides not being recognized by the PC, the Ipad w/ SIM card installed works perfectly well on it's own, but (obviously) I'm unable to sync anything to / from it, or back it up in iTunes.
Hoping someone can point me in the direction of something obvious that I've missed.

The only idea/suggestion I have is that you do a reset of your iPad, with the SIM card installed: Press Home + sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until the white Apple logo appears.

  • No internet access in public unsecured WLAN environment with Airport card

    Dear community
I do face the following problem:
I am not able to open any internet pages in a particular unsecured public WLAN Hot Spot, although my iBook (over an Airport Card) has been successfully assigned a TCP / IP address. Other public Hot Spots work fine, but not this one.
With my Windows Pocket PC there exists no problem. After starting my browser, I immediately get redirected to the login screen.
This does not work with my iBook. There is no automatic redirect. Then I tried to directly address the router TCP / IP address. This worked and the login screen appeared. But then, after clicking the login button, an error appeared: "Can't read cookie" - but cookies are enabled (no success with Safari, Firefox and Opera).
    The router is a D-Link.
Another guest with an iBook had no problems, we compared setups - the only difference which we found was, that he was using a new Airport Extreme card, I do only have an old Airport card.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you very much
    Gary
iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Airport Card

D-Link Wireless Access point. PC works great..Mac is SLOW on internet.
Posted: Apr 5, 2006 8:16 PM Reply Email
This has really got me frustrated. I own a hotel and am working to get it set up with a wireless internet connection. I've got a qwest dsl modem going into a D-Link router, and then today added another D-Link access point (actually, the computer tech added the new access point). I needed this additional access point because there were too many dead spots in the hotel with only one D-link.
The new D-link seems to be working perfectly, for PC users that is. People using a PC laptop can connect to the wireless network and browse the internet at fast speeds. However with my G4 1.33gh Powerbook with Airport Extreme is having problems. I get a very strong airport signal, but internet browsing is crawling along. Some pages work for minutes to load, and some won't load at all.
The settings for the wireless connection is the same on my mac as they are on the PC. Is there something else I need to change?
    Thanks for any help,
    lw

  • Problems with Airport Card

I move back and forth from school to home, and I've never had a problem with my card before. I recently restored my compuer back to its factory settings, and it was running great with my Airport Express. I came home after moving, and my computer won't read the WPA hooked up in my house. It says I am connected, but won't let me access the internet. I'm not sure why. We tried rebooting the connection, I've looked on my computer, used system preferences and everything. I did notice when I tried to use the Network Setup Assistant, it said the password I used to connect was wrong, but when my computer uses the airport icon at the corner of the screen, it accepts the password. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An additional distressing note -- I went back to aforementioned building with the 10.4.5 Powerbook last night. Did a cold boot...and the Airport Express picked up the correct network DHCP info immediately. Roamed between a couple of WAPs, surfed a couple of sites, then sat down and tried to duplicate this feat...by re-booting at least 6 more times. Nada. I once again got factory default IP addresses on each attempted reboot. I changed nothing from the network settings I'd tried last week with this machine nor were any changes made to the network or WAPs. DHCP didn't work last week on several attempts (and reboots), worked ONCE yesterday on the first boot, then nothing again on the subsequent reboots.
Again, I'm stressing that there don't "seem" to be problems with the network or WAPs because Windows clients consistently obtain DHCP and authenticate without issue.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
