With an older Mac Book running OS X 10.6.8 should I upgrade to Yosemite?
Want to upgrade my OS with my older Mac Book Pro running OS X 10.6.8 should I upgrade to Yosemite or something older like Lion or Maverick. Will my computer handle the newest OS?
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

Hi All,
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) installed, should I upgrade to Yosemite? Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard system requirements
Purchased Installer disc here
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools.
OS X 10.7 Lion system requirements
Purchased emailed download code here.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
To use OS X 10.7 Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended)
7 GB of available disk space
2 GB of RAM
To install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty here.
http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall these apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.
Good Luck! -
SHOULD I UPGRADE FROM 10.6.8?
10.7 or above will not run your PPC based programs, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above will need 4GB or more RAM, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above is slower than 10.6, so that's a cost in performance
If your machine is out of AppleCare, then if 10.7/10.8 hoses your machine somehow (like it did mine), then your screwed and have to buy a new one.
If the machine originally came with 10.4 or 10.5, then you certainly don't want to upgrade past 10.6.8 and slow it down, just run it until the wheels fall off.
I only advise Early 2011 machines and later to upgrade to 10.8, then only under AppleCare.
Apple is issuing security updates for 10.6, installed anti-virus, and it has about 30% version market share, so your safe for now.

I have mac book pro - OSX 10.6.8. Should i upgrade to Mountain Lion?
I've never changed operating systems for my Mac Book. Is it a good idea? Why or why not?
What model of MB do you have? Why do you want to upgrade?
Before upgrading consider:
Don't upgrade if you are in the midst of important work. Wait until you have finished.
If you are having problems with your computer get them sorted out before you upgrade.
Verify that any mission critical software will be compatible with the upgrade.
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS. -
My older mac book pro and iMac are both running 10.6.8 and both have started running safari and email VERY slowly. My new mac book pro running 10.9 is having no issues. Is anyone else experiencing these issues?
No noticeable speed differences running the four latest OSs on my machine.

HT201335 Is there an app that I can use with apple TV to mirror my older Mac Book Pro ?
Is there an app that I can use with apple TV to mirror my older Mac Book Pro mid 2009? If not is there a software patch that will allow me to mirror ?
In my own opinion it didn't work well enough and I don't use it, I have fairly high standards when it comes to stuff like this. But from what I can gather it seems like it's the best of the rest! many here have said they like it.
There used to be a trial period, but I couldn't say whether that's still available. -
iPad 3 and iPhone 4S won't synch with iTunes on Mac book pro. Error message says I need to have version 10.6.3 or later for iTunes. Mac iOS version 10.5.8 and iTunes on Mac is 10.6.1. iPad and iPhone version is 6.0(10A403). When I check for updates on the Mac book pro it says software versions are up to date.
When I check for iTunes version 10.6.3 it looks like it is for snow leopard operating system which I am not on. How to I get my devices to sync with computer. Everything worked prior to iOS 6 upgrade on remote devices.I'm having the same problem.
iPhone 4s won't sync with my Macbook Pro.
I iust updated the iPhone to iOS6 (thought it wasn't syncing before the update either).
Macbook Pro running Mac OS 10.5.8
iTunes 10.6.3 (i.e. latest update - which hasn't had an issues apart from syncing).
I tried 3 different USB sync cables. Still not syncing.
Do I really have to update my Mac OS to 10.6.8 in order to sync my phone ? I thought as long as you have iTunes 10.6.3 you're ok...
Is there a way to update to Mac OS 10.6.8 (or later) without wiping the hard drive and doing a new install?..
thanks -

Jan 1, 2013, 12:52:21 AM Self test - passedYou have at least 4 different mobile phone software installed. Rid the MBP of the ones you do not hjave anymore, especially the Blackberry (assuming you no longer have one). Also rid the MBP of Mackeeper, you do not need it and it is notorious for slowing down a Mac.

Older Mac Book Pro is slow and bogging down
My older Mac Book Pro is getting slow and having issues like a PC (programs freeze and closes, slow to respond, slow to open programs, wifi signal dropps out, etc)
Is there a way to restore the performance, maybe by doing a wipe and a time machine restore?
The hard drive is only 2/3 full and I don'e run a lot of high demand programs.Sarmaticus wrote:
I seem to have read somewhere that the Mac does auto-defragging during late night admin sessions (on certain dates only) if your computer is left switched on overnight. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable would have a little more about this....
Ah, there you go. It's in the MacLife article mentioned by shoulder2thewheel: 3.15am nightly admin sessions. Just need to leave your Mac on.
Not good if you have loads of bad sectors though, as you may find that system files will be written over the bad sectors... and hey presto, you have a fatal disk crash, just like on my computer two nights ago. -
Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?
Hi,
Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro? If so, is it working well and would you do it again? Is it compatible with the Apple dual DVI cable?
Thanks,
AlanI just got a Yamakasi precision 2703. I'm using it with a 13" macbook pro (non retina). I got it working with a thunderbolt / minidisplayport to dual link DVI adapter from monoprice for $~70. At first I didn't think it was going to work, plugged it in, turned on the display, nothing happened. I unplugged, plugged the USB cable back in and the monitor came to life. Working great so far. I bought mine from green-sum on ebay. The recommend not using this monitor with apple computers due to overheating issues... I don't see why that would be the case, though. I've only been running it for a couple days, but so far no issues, and I've been happy with the monitor, no dead pixels, no bleed in the corners.
The monitor stand on the 2703 isn't too bad, a little wobbly but not as bad as the others from what I've read. The monitor does sit a little low, though. I have a much sturdier stand coming from monoprice for $20+shipping, which will provide tons of adjustment, both height and rotation.
Good luck! -
I have a mac book running leopard software, 10.5.8 how can I get my computor up to date as lion requires minimum 10.6.6.
You can upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.5 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. As for programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications. -

I think your Macbook came with a Mini DVI port instead of a Mini Display port.

We have a large family, 5 kids and two adults all with iPads, iPhones, Mac Books, Servers.... How can we combine our purchases to use on all our devices. We have two Apple ID's and sometimes buy multiple copies because of how we are limited...
Hello Halfback71,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Frequently asked questions about Apple ID
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5622
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.
Best of luck,
