With CS5 upgrade installed, do I need to keep CS4 installed as well?

I upgraded from CS4 to CS5 by purchasing the "upgrade" package.
In my applications I now have CS4 and CS5 installed and they show as two separate applications.
What I would like to know is
1. Do I need to keep CS4 installed for CS5 to work, as it is only an "upgrade"?
2. When I buy a new computer, do I have to install CS4 on it before installing the "upgrade" version of CS5?
Many thanks for your help.

I must admit that comes as a bit of a surprise.
I had presumed that the "upgrade" version of CS5, being so much cheaper to buy than the full original, would check your hard drive to make sure you actually had bought a legal copy of CS4.
Does that mean there is no difference between the "upgrade" and the full price installation discs?
By the way, I know I'm old sometimes can't find something even when it's right under my nose, but is there a "LOG OUT" button anywhere on this forum?

I,m under the impression that CS4 must be installed on the machine for a 'upgrade to' version of CS6 to be successfully installed.
    Is this assumption wrong?
No, but it's not essential since upgrades include the full program code. The serial number differentiates a full version from an upgrade.
If the CS6 ugrade installer cannot find an earlier qualifying version already installed, it will ask you to enter the serial number for an earlier qualifying version instead. You then enter an earlier version qualifying serial and the CS6 installer will continue.
When I'm installing (or reinstalling) Creative Suites where the latest version is an upgrade version, I only ever install the latest version - even if no Adobe software was previously installed on that particular computer.

  • I have CS4 but am installing CS6 rather than upgrading.  Do I need to uninstall CS4?

I am still using CS4 at prepsent but am installing the complete CS6 rather than upgrading.  Do I need to uninstall CS4 or is that taken care of when installing CS6?

There should be no problem, having two versions of PS installed. For nearly every program, and for decades, Adobe installers do NOT overwrite existing versions of any program - the installation is complete, and separate.
While I have not tested with PS CS 6, going back, I had PS 4.0.1, PS 7.0.1 and PS CS installed on the same computer. The first, was to do something, that was changed in PS 5.0, and that I used about twice per year. The latter two, were because I knew PS 7.0.1, and had just upgraded to CS, and was learning the differences (significant). I kept PS 7 around, in case a client called at 5:00PM with a revision, and the courier was enroute. I did not want to fumble with a new interface, when under deadline. Never had one issue.

  • First-time upgrading, what do I need to keep?

    Hey all:
I bought FCS1 when it first came out, and just bought the upgrade to FCS2 for it. When I installed the upgrade version, it asked for the Serial number, I put in the one that came with the FCS2 upgrade disks. Everything installed wonderfully and still works. Cool.
Thing is, I'll be buying a new computer eventually - a Mac Pro in January. I'm curious as to what I need to keep for installing FCS2 on the new computer (I'll be formatting and selling the old one). As I understand it, the FCS2 upgrade disks have the full versions of the software on them, and when I put them in to install, the serial number I should enter is from my FCS1 set. Is this true? Things that give me pause:
    1) When I did the upgrade, I used the new Serial numbers that came with the upgrade disks;
    2) My FCS1 disks aren't Universal.
Is the upgrade serial number only used if I have FCS1 already installed on a computer and I then try to upgrade? If so, then, upon getting my new computer in January, I'll never have to use that number again. Also: what do I do with my old disks? Can they be tossed?
Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry if anything is unclear.
    Michael

I have a general rule that I never toss software discs. Especially when I paid over a grand for them.
Are they really taking up that much room, that you need to get rid of them?
Keep them. Keep your paperwork, too.

  • Help with CS5 upgrade

I have a copy of CS3 I bought over a year ago. I don't even remember where I bought it but paid like $500 for it. It was a computer store. I tried to do an upgrade to CS5. I bought the standard CS5 upgrade from Adobe store for $199. I just don't need or use the extended stuff. Nedless to say
when I try to put in my prior serial number it says it's not valid. I tried the Indian guy at support on chat and he's basicly saying I'm screwed. I have a box here it looks VERY real. All the manuals, everything. I'll even send it to them. Am I basicly just screwed? I work in IT and I know supsicious software when I see it but this looks 100% legit. I think it was bought at that place that became com USA a while ago.
I'm just an advanced hobyist photographer and I'm am physicly ill a tthe idea I am out the $500 I spent to purchase my CS3 copy. The little chat guy was saying I'd have to pay like $another $500 to get a legit copy. I mean I thought you could trust software actually bought in a store. I would have bought it at adobe online had I known this was going to happen. HELP ADOBE!

Yeah I installed it. And I had to fill int eh registration form. Although the weird thing come to think of it was periodicly it aske dme to register again
a few times. Maybe that should have been a tip off? I mean it updated OK as well.
Yeah the adobe robochat guy said it was invalid. I will call tommorrow and hope and beg and pray they can do something for me. I am getting very ill thinking I paid for a full version that was a fake. Considering I had to save a while and use my tax return a few years ago to buy that one. Been trying to find a receipt to at least prove I paid for it but so far no luck. Come to think of it I think I paid cash. Uggg I'm nausiated!

  • I had to buy a new computer and now can't get my CS3 with CS5 upgrade to work on windows 8.1. What can I do to get them to load and work?

I can load CS3, but it won't let me register it and I can load CS5 upgrade, but when I open CS5 it shows fault and closes. What can I do to get these programs to work on my new computer?

Registration has always been optional, so there is no point in trying. Those pages on the Adobe site are long gone. CS5 crashing is another matter, but without some crash logs and more detailed system information nobody can realyl know. This could be a mundane permissions issue on some files, could be a crash with the hardware acceleration stuff but just the same could be the activation system failing. Impossible to tell based on your limited information.

  • I have both CS6 regular and 64 bit installed, do I need to keep both of these?

Have recently installed PS CS6 on a Windows 7 machine. Works fine, but has installed CS6 and CS6 64-bit. Do I need to keep both of these ??

    Hi Dougie59,
No , you are not required to do so. it just happened coz you have selected both the options 32 BIT and 64 BIT (default), for correct installation if you have 64 bit compatible OS follow these steps..
    First do a clean uninstall.
    Run the Photoshop CS6 installer.
Enter your serial number. Click Acccept.
On the right side of the Options panel under the 64-bit heading, uncheck the box for Photoshop CS6. Leave the "Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64-bit)" option checked.
    Finish the installation.
But keeping both the files does not do any harm excep the storage issues (it increases).
Its all my assumption and experience both but hope you will get the answer.

Hi. I'm having trouble opening a file. I keep getting an error saying the plugins need to be updated (see image).
The file was created before I came to this job, but I'm pretty sure it was created in CS5, which is the version I'm trying to open it in.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

thank you and I will take a look at those logs
I was thinking it was because of permissions using the system account sccm uses to install the software? could that be the case? it works for some but not all. and there is a known issue from Aruba, the vendor, but of course they have not given us any fix.
the issue they had was when you install the 6.3.3 version through SCCM, which we orginally pushed out, the upgrade through the clearpass server or the push of the new 6.3.5 version through sccm does not work on all, but I would say maybe 25% at best do
    from what i am seeing.

  • After CS5 upgrade from PSElements9 and reason to keep 9?

I'm updating my MAC from PS Elements 9 to the full CS5 Photoshop Standard.  Is there any reason to keep the Elements installed?
I mean is there anything it can do CS5 can't?  Otherwise it seems redundant.  What do you think?

I mean is there anything it can do CS5 can't?
I guess one could argue about that …
One item that (former) PSE-users have occasionally brought up were frames.
One can create frames in Photoshop, but PSE seems to offer a default selection that Photoshop does not.

  • Studio 11 install directory change needed to keep previous studio version

Is there a way to maintain different studio # versions? Studio 11 wants to install under /opt/* & we already have Studio 9 in that directory. Please advise how we can maintain several version installations. Thanks.

As explained in the installation instructions, you can install multiple versions of Sun Studio on the same machine, but they must go into different base directories. The default base directory is /opt. If you have one version of Sun Studio already in /opt, you can install another one in a different base directory.
It's best if you can plan ahead. For example, suppose your first planned installation is Sun Studio 8. You could install it in /opt/ss8, then Sun Studio 8 in /opt/ss9, and Sun Studio 10 in /opt/ss10. Or you could create a top-level directory ss, and install successive versions in /ss/n, where "n" is the version numer.
At installation time, the installer asks you what base directory to use. That's where you enter the base directory if you don't want it to be the default /opt.
