With .img do you still need movie files?

Hey All,
I was wondering if I make a .img of my movie and dvd, can I throw away the iMovie files/project?
This is if I am completely done with the project of course. I am trying to save space on my hard drive but I don't want to lose my movies.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Verbal,
As long as you're not wanting to edit your project anymore you can delete all of the iMovie files (and the iDVD project file too). The iMovie project contains all of the raw footage and edits of course so you MUST be sure you've finished editing first.
The disk .img file is an exact replica of the DVD contents that you would burn. You can burn as many new DVD's as you need from this file. It's the same as the disk version.
I would advise you to create a DVD, watch it to make sure you're happy, make another copy so you have 2 DVD's then you can delete all of the files from your Mac including the .img (because you've now got one master disk and a backup disk).
Hope this helps.
David.

  • Do you still need EJB when you can do it all with JSF/JSC?

I think EJBs make J2EE unnecessarily complex for 80% of small to mid or even some large scale applications. When you can separate the logic and view using JSF and Servlets, and still do transactions (using JSC DataProviders), why do you still need EJBs? I have heard nightmares with EJBs deployment and how its complex to move them over from test to production servers.
Are EJBs getting obsolete and not worth learning? Afterall, in the Microsoft world, there is nothing like EJB and all they got is ASP.NET (similar to JSF) -- along with its associated data classes and .NEt framework. I am sure they also promote separating logic from presentation.
I think JSF is the best thing Java world has got to compete with Microsoft on developer productivity for small to medium size applications.

J2EE EJB's are far from being a holy grial capable of solving any situation. They are complex, difficult to learn and code, but we need to be fair and tell the whole story.
EJB's are part of the J2EE technology and offer infrastructure needed in complex applications. I.E., you mention
"When you can separate the logic and view using JSF and Servlets, and still do transactions (using JSC DataProviders)"
but these are only database level transactions. The J2EE app servers can handle global (and distributed) transactions involving different operations over different databases and transactions ruled by non-database software. Just imagine the complexity of handling a "rollback" of this kind. Put that in .NET pipe and try to smoke it.
J2EE EJB Entity Beans were the black sheep of the family. They were oriented to easily handle fine operations (i.e. update a specific record of information) but on the other hand present a poor performance in operations over large sets of data. You can do some optimizations but..... Now the story is a bit different with JavaEE 5 and the Java Persistence API -inspired on Hibernate-.
The bottom line is (as you mention in your post): J2EE/JavaEE are not needed by most of small or mid sized apps. However, I would strongly encourage you to have a look at the JavaEE 5 technology. The fact that portions of the JavaEE technology do not have a counterpart in .NET does not mean that they are not worth to (at least) have a look at them.
    Best regards

  • Hi everybody, I am trying to create a DVD pal without menu with the program iDVD from a .mov file. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Hi everybody, I am trying to create a DVD pal without menu with the program iDVD from a .mov file. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

Microsoft Exchange is an email server (and a few other things) and is run by your email hosting service (or work or where ever.)  Having access is NOT a requirement for iPhone or iPad (on any version of iOS.)  However, if your email is still being delivered to that particular email server where Exchange is running, then you still need to connect to that server with whatever device you have.  Just like if you have Yahoo mail, you would still need to connect to Yahoo from whatever device you have.
If you don't mind changing your email or moving your calendar and contact from your current Exchange account, then "you do not need Microsoft Exchange."

  • Can you use QT mov. files on ipod

is it possible to use quicktime mov. files on ipod, i have them in my itunes but am wondering if this is possible,
    thankyou

You seem to be confusing the file format (.mov) with its content (compression format). If the .mov file does not contain a format compatible with your iPod, then you must convert it to a compatible format. The specifics for this conversion depend on the specific format present in your source file, what system you are using, and the software you have available, are willing to download, or purchase.
For instance, let's say you have a .mov file which contains a "muxed" MPEG1 movie. If you have a Mac, you could use the free iSquint application to turn it into an iPod compatible movie. On the other hand, Windows users could use the free Videora iPod Converter to do the same thing.
Use your QT Player "Show Movie Info" window to determine in which format your source file is actually enconded and go from there.

While I'm here I thought I would ask this as I am experiencing time lags and wondered if you still need to clear the PRAM as we used to in OS 9.x. I know this is not the motion thread/forum so issues I have will be addressed there. Just wondering.

  • Help me capture stills from mov files of kodak camera created in pal format

I did not know the difference and saved movie files on my kodak digital camera as pal format - it was top of list - i need to capture some stills as single photos from those files. I have switched to NTSC format for future and will want to capture stills from movies in that format also
does anyone know if quicktime pro 7 will di what i want or what i need to reach my goal?

Even the free version of QT Player allows you to "copy" frames. These could be "pasted" into a new blank using any image editing software.
What ever frame is showing when you stop playback will be the one copied. More control by using the right left arrow keys.
The Pro upgrade can export a frame to many image formats. It doesn't matter that the format is PAL. NTSC and PAL are TV playback settings. Your computer doesn't care.

  • With Ap3 do we still need Nik Plug-ins

I bought the Nik plug-ins mainly for noise reduction, viveza and selective sharpening. It seems like with brushes these plug-ins are now unnecessary and still will result in large tiff files once 64-bit compatible.
    Am I missing anything here?

I think they are "less necessary," but I don't think they are unnecessary. Certainly Silver FX and Color FX offer things you can't get directly within Aperture. The Nik sharpening is very good; probably better for output sharpening than what's built in to Aperture but it depends on what you are doing - if you're printing for sales and very critical you may still need it.
I rarely used the Nik noise reduction plug-in because I didn't want to convert my files to TIFF early in the workflow.

  • Using an External HD with USB 1.1 for Media (Movie files) storage?

    Many thanks for your attention.
For a Media Storage (mostly movies) HD, I ordered a Maxtor OneTouch II with Firewire and the company mistakenly sent me one with USB 1.1 instead.
I remember reading that for Media Storage, only the Firwire connection will work (for Macs). Or that there are a lot of problems with USB.
Before sending this HD back to company, just checking to see if this is so.
Also (when I get the correct Drive), I've heard that in order to store a Movie File, (a movie on Final Cut Pro or iMovie, etc.), the External Hard Drive MUST be formatted as a "Mac Extended (Journaled)" Hard Drive.
Posting here for people's thoughts, opinions (hopefully not contradictory).
    - Ross

    Send it back.
Even USB 2.0 isn't good for media. Fast transfer rate, but not a sustained one.
USB 1 won't work AT ALL.
    RETURN!

  • With the new OS do you still need the iprocessors to use multilple displays on AppleTV

I just downloaded the new OS and it seems they made some improvements with the multiple displays. Current I don't have the i processors so I cannot use the mirror feature with Apple TV, does this new OS still require those processors to use multiple displays with Apple TV? I have a Mac Book Pro that was purchase about a month before the new Macs were issues with the i processors.

None of the people I know have needed to use a bumper or other case with any of the iPhone 4s. The reports on the antenna problems have been rather overblown. Anyway, there's been nothing to indicate that the white iPhone 4 has any changes to the hardware other than a minor change to the proximity sensor and perhaps the camera flash.
    Regards.

  • HT1364 How do you convert iTunes movie files so that you can watch them on Windows Media Player?

Hello. For school, I am supposed to make a video mash-up from a movie. I bought the movie I needed, but now I can't open it in Windows Movie Maker to edit it.

Oh well then, thanks anyways! I guess I'll have to find something else to do.
Do you have any idea how people get movie clips for their videos on YouTube?

  • Still need .mix File Format Support from Microsoft PictureIt

My many files in the .MIX format will die unless Adobe can reverse engineer a conversion.  I have a ton I would like to batch convert to .jpg or .dng.  Can you help, I am using a Mac and want to jetison my Windows machine.  Lots of folks grouse on the net forums who are stranded the same way.

Advice for the future: If you intend on archiving images, do not choose a closed format that  only one application can read.
Even with the resources Adobe has, they do not have the legal ability to reverse engineer another's proprietary file format. If this was even remotely possible, I'd suggest that you visit Adobe's feature request web page.
If you want to be forever done with "anti-virus nonsense" then you may not want Mac either. Apple recommends anti-virus software in this document and even includes some very limited antivirus capabilities in Snow Leopard.

  • Can you set a .mov file to loop for ipad?

Spent now hours trying to get clips to loop when viewed on a ipad... it shows fine in explorer or on my Mac but on the ipad it will not autoplay or loop
    Tried this
    <video src="http://linktovideo.mov" width="576" height="576" controls="controls" autoplay="autoplay" loop = "loop" qtnext1="goto0" controller="false" kioskmode="true"></video>
But does not work for me any ideas or is it just not possible?

Warning: To prevent unsolicited downloads over cellular networks at the user’s expense, embedded media cannot be played automatically in Safari on iOS—the user always initiates playback. A controller is automatically supplied on iPhone or iPod touch once playback in initiated, but for iPad you must either set the controls attribute or provide a controller using JavaScript.
