With iOS5 and Cloud - it *appears* the iPad2 is the right choice for me...

Like many people, Ive been hemming and hawing over whether to go with an iPad2 or an Android device.  Ive read the reviews, watched the product demos, and analyzed what each device can and cannot do.  Im not an Apple "guy" per say but Im not a PC-die hard either.  I have a crappy Trac-fone so I dont have any bias for or against other Android or Apple mobile devices.  I just like products that work and I dont get too caught up in any fanboy-ism stuff
I just noticed that the Apple store is listing the iPad2 "now with iOS5 & cloud".  Thats great news, IMO.  If there were any issues I was worried about with the iPad2, it was that pesky iTunes app and the fact that I do NOT want to deal with it.  I know there are some apps to handle file transfers and what not but its good to see Cloud being there in the iPad2.
Of course, I have the usual concerns with the iPad2 that some others have...like:
Lack of flash and not being able to fully enjoy some of my web pages
The proprietary nature of Apples products and file handling(walled garden concept)
Hatred of iTunes(although that can be addressed with some 3rd party apps from what Im reading)
The mono speaker is kind of lame.
Other than that - I dont see many problems!  Our intended uses of the iPad2 will be:
Portable device for multimedia & gaming
Managing photos & media
Magzine subcriptions & delivery
Some e-reading/books
Kids to use for homework, research, and stuff like that.
Verious other tasks we used to try and do with our laptops but they are simply too heavy and have lousy battery performance!
Well, Im just about ready to order.  Looking forward to chatting about the iPad2 with everyone!

Very nice. I hope you enjoy it.  But be aware that this is a technical support forum, not a chatroom.

  • MacBook Air: the right choice for a College student?

    Hello there!
I'm buying my first Apple laptop in the near future (probably tomorrow as I like to buy things in store and not online and I live roughly 75 miles from the nearest Apple store and am heading to the mall it's located in on a shopping trip tomorrow, anyway). I currently have a 3 year old Dell that has no battery life at all (it has to be connected 24/7 to an outlet, the mouse clicky button doesn't work, it overheats, and the hardrive has already been replaced not once but twice) and I don't use it for anything other than school, facebook, watching movies via netflix, skype, and listening to music. I've been doing months of research and all has lead me to Apple.
I want this laptop to last me until I am done with my masters and into the first couple years of my teaching career, so roughly 6 years. Is that too much to ask from this machiene?
I'm inlove with the thiness, lightness and portability of the Macbook Air. I use my laptop a lot, this semester I'm finishing out my core requirements and a lot of them are "bullsh*t" classes where I can do nothing and get an A. I would therefore have my laptop with me, I also bring it to friends rooms to study and relax. My goal is to have a laptop that I can write papers, continue to watch movies and use it as a basic machiene. I barely use a cd drive (my aunt is willing to by the drive that goes with the Air) but when I do it's just for burning music to my itunes. I want a machiene that will have a long lasting battery life - that's my biggest concern.
My roomate has a Macbook Pro and keeps telling me that I'd hate the Air.
I've read that people do not like it as it does not have a backlit keyboard. That doesn't bother me as my keyboard currently isn't backlit.
I've also read that people continue to prefer the pro over the air but I am not a fan of the pro just as it is so much bigger.
I barely ever use my USB drive, when I do its to transfer over files that need to be printed.  So having only two of them means nothing to me really.
I'm just looking for assistance to help me make my decision. I feel like I already made it but I just want to be sure that I'm making the right choice.
    My personal pros/cons:
Pros: lightweight, small, highly portable, amazing webcam, excellent battery life
Cons: it's so thin I feel like I would snap it in two pieces
    Thank you so much!

    Listen to us, Lovekate!
We know you're eager, but hold out just a little longer--maybe a week or two--for the update! Please! It's the smart thing to do because it may give you options you can use. Kate! Look away from the machines. This way! This way! You can do this. If you don't, you'll feel buyers remorse and that's not good. Hold off. You'll be happy you did...also, don't forget, when you do buy, you get a student discount.
From what you say, you've found the computer you love and don't need any encouragement from us. But here's advise for what you can say to your friends:
    (1) To those telling you to get the Pro--you are not going to buy more than you need. With Clouds, and online mail and external hard drives, there is no need for you to haul around anything made heavy with a huge hard drive you'll never fill up. And the Air can do anything a Pro can do excepting update to a bigger hard drive (which you've just explained you don't need--like you don't need the CD drive). And the 13" actually has a longer lasting battery than the 13" Pro.
    (2) Why should you get a computer you don't love, and therefore is no fun or joy for you to work on, rather than a computer you love, which you will love working on? Apple rule, "Always get what you love."
    (3) To your Dad, you are buying something very like a car. And like a car, if you buy one cheap, it will cost you if it breaks down, needs repairs, or needs replacing. Needing to buy a new cheap car every other year can add up to the same cost as buying a new car that will last you ten years. You are buying a computer that will last you, be reliable, and not need repairs thus interfering with your productivity (by the way, get Apple Care--adds two more years warranty for a total of 3 years--trust us on this. If you can't afford it now, you can hold off buying it till the end of the first year, but do get it!). Apple computers also have good resale value.
In short, as much as it costs, it will be worth it.
Hope that helps, and remember...hold out! or if you've already bought it--you have 14 days to return it.

  • Is JAAS the right choice for me?

I'm trying to get my head around what JAAS is and if its the right thing for me to be using for an application I'm writing. Let me describe the situation:
Its a client-server system. The client connects to the server and sends a username and password to authenticate itself. I want the server to check the username and password against the server's local accounts to check that the password is right.
Am I right in saying that JAAS will not do this and will in fact only validate the user that the server process is running as?
I there something better that I could be using?
On a slightly different note I would also like to be able to change the user that one of the threads of the server is running as. Is this possible with any pre-existing technology, or is it possible with a bit of JNI?
    Mossop

Ok, maybe I should give JAAS a try then. Its a linux/unix system so I can just knock up some native code to implement a LoginModule that calls the standard PAM library
The point of changing the user that the thread is running at is to ensure that the thread cannot access any files on the server that that particular user should not have access to. Unless anyone can suggest a platform independant way of doing this, I can only think of 2 ways, both involving native code:
    1. Have some native code that given a username and a filename will return what permissions the user has on the file. This would I imagine be quite a pain to write.
    2. Have some native code that changes the user that the thread runs as. Then we can query files through the File interface, and what's more, bugs in the java code cannot accidentally access files that the user shouldnt be able to access.

  • IWeb the right choice for a newsletter?

I am trying to find the easiest way to create, manage and maintain a newsletter that I will be updating and sending by way of email to a large group of recipients. Is iWeb '06 the best choice for this idea? I want to be able to easily create it and also have it in a format that I can easily send it to a large group of people by email. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

iWeb is for creating websites, not for creating documents sent by e-mail.
As long as members don't need to be able to edit the document or click on links to websites, e-mail addresses, etc., your best bet is probably a program like Pages (or a another word processing program) to create the document, then choose the PDF option from the Print dialog to create a pdf document to e-mail.

  • I have no share tab to share videos and get them in the right format for posting on youtube, is this because i have got the trial version, someone please help.

I cant export my movie, as there is no share tab and when i go file>share it isn't in the right format what should i do?

The trial version of FCP X is the same as the paid version - it just stops working after 30 days, so that's not your problem.
What version of FCP X is it, and what is the spec of the footage you're editing?
(Open it in QuickTime and press Cmd+I to show the spec in the Inspector, then post back with the full details or a screen grab).

  • Question about product variable - is BC the right choice for me?

I have a criteria that must be met for my ecommerce solution for a new business. The customer has a product that has a variable length, and would like the price to reflect the options that are offered. For example: the produced panels are 30" wide, but the customer can choose the length of each panel. Another option may be sq. ft. for material...
How can I achieve this with Business Catalyst? Is there an easy way?
    Thank you for your time!!!
    Matt

    Look into Product Attributes.
You can preset various sizes and change the price based on the size. See this KB Article.
I would recommend creating a trial site, use a template, then try Product Attributes and see if it does all of what you need.
If you believe it would work then you can go from there.

  • SAP ABAP -- Is it the right choice for entering into SAP Technology

    Hi
I have 4 years experience in JAVA/J2EE. But I am planning to switch my career now to SAP. I am planning for doing course in SAP ABAP.
Please anyone suggest me if SAP ABAP would be a right choice. And how is the demand in SAP ABAP at present.
Can I explore myself in SAP ABAP at this point.
    Best Regards
    Ranjan

Just out of curiosity - why switch to SAP in the first place?
Yes, if you are good at programming, then yes ABAP is the way to go. But please remember that while searching for jobs you will still be considered a fresher - in ABAP. You JAVA background has very little - if not zero - significance when it comes to experience.
Of course you can go ahead and explore the ABAP world. You can download the trial version from the site and start pulling a few levers to see if you are comfortable.

  • Is XControl the right choice for...

    Hello
here is what I want to do: implement a PID controller that can be used as a FP element that shows the current setpoint, input and output and has two buttons. One that opens a config-window to input/change the PID values and another one that opens a graph that shows the setpoint, input, and output vs. time. The PID controller takes one input value, compares it to the setpoint and gives one output according to the PID-settings. This would be used inside a while loop where it would be operated continuously.
I already wrote a XControl that does the above, but ran into the following problems:
    1) Since the control is an indicator (it takes the input value as input), it doesn't have an output. So I added a property to access the output. This means I have to first call the XControl and then get the output value via a property node. This somehow doesn't seem right Is there another way to get a heavily customized frontpanel object that has in- and output?
    2) I use a hidden graph and a hidden cluster for the plot and the "config window". This makes it possible to show and hide these by just hitting the corresponding buttons. It would be really nice though, if  I could pin the graph and move it around, something like a dockable window... Is there a way to do this inside an Xcontrol?
    thanks
    Arun

Subpanels is one thing that comes to mind. You could implement your logic in a subVI and use subpanels to display information. Another thing to consider is to separate your processing from your UI altogether. Ben posted a decent write-up covering this. Define an API (most likely using queues or user events) to pass the data from your processing task to the UI for display. Similarly define a mechanism for passing data into the processing task if this is done while it is running. If you only need to pass it in when you start the task you can simply wire it in. By separating the UI and processing you have the flexibility of customizing your display as needed. This also allows you to reuse your processing tasks without worrying about how it is presented to the user.

  • Is SBS 2011 the right choice for replacing Server 2003 Terminal Server?

Reading license options has done my head in so going to ask for recommendations here if SBS is best option, as every option seems to have pros/cons.
Need to upgrade a 2003 Server which has 2 local users and average of 10 remote users (max 15 users).  They use remote desktop to connect with everything on a single server (on its last legs now).  Server acts as DC, runs SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
(need to upgrade from Express to SQL server Std shortly due to size), Microsoft Office, Myob, and a couple of proprietary applications.
I'm thinking SBS 2011 is best option as with premium add-on will include SQL Server licenses, so it's looking the most cost effective?
    So the questions;
In an ideal world what would you suggest as a replacement for the current setup?  (As is, with apps installed on server and remote users using Remote Desktop, or can SBS 2011 offer better solution?)
Can you install Microsoft Office 2003 under SBS 2011 for all users to use with existing licenses?  Cost of upgrading server and O/S will probably rule out upgrading Office as well at the moment (though that's the long term plan).
or.. Best way of running Office and app for SQL Server on local PC's with VPN link?  (may have issues with response times for some locations).  I gather DirectAccess won't be an option as needs multiple servers and clients are Windows 7, but just
    Win 7 Pro, not Enterprise.
Appreciate any advice....  this is for a small business with a few locations that is just getting big enough to require an upgrade, but small enough that funds as always are limited.  Realise what I'm asking about maintaining current setup using
Remote Desktop is probably not best practice, but is it most cost effective given the small size?

    Hi:
There is no easy answer, and a lot depends on what you do with your email.  SBS made email very easy, but without it, the decisions are harder and more costly.  O365 and other hosted email systems are low cost of entry but they add up over time.
Pop3 is cheap, but not very robust or convenient.
SQL introduces another wrinkle.  SQL express is free and is good for databases up to 10 GB.  If you are well within that limit I would do that and not incur the expense of SQL Server.  If you need SQL server, the PAO is the best way to
acquire it, but you will need a physical box to install it, unless you do Hyper V as below.
SBS does not allow for remote access to itself to run programs.  Only for admin purposes.  Full stop.
In an ideal world I would suggest SBS 2011 and Server 2012 running as VM's on one beefy server.  Install Server 2012 in HyperV role only, then install SBS 2011 as VM1 and Server 2012 again as VM2.  The license for Server 2012 allows 3 installs
of the same license, one as host and two guests.  If you need a third server you can install the same copy of Server 2012 again as a second VM.  Not that all three installs must be on the same box.  This third VM could also be the Server 2008
from the PAO, but iirc the SQL version that comes with the PAO only checks that there is a SBS in the domain, not what OS it is being installed on.
So, for the cost of one pretty beefy server, one copy of SBS 2011, one copy of the Server 2012 and, if needed the PAO and RDS CALs and Office CALs you should be covered.
Don't forget a robust firewall to protect all of this.

  • Whether JavaFX is the right choice for my application??

    Hi,
I am interested in creating a graphics application. I have bunch of sensors on a table and I want to create different images on the table through a projector hung on ceiling facing down. I am have some values for a gray scale. Say for example I have 250 values then I want the screen to be divided into equal 250 rectangles and each of them will be given a color based on the gray scale value I have. If I have 800 X 600 values then I will have that much resolution of the gray scale image. after certain time the values change and I have to change the image as well.
I thought of using JavaFX but I am not sure should I go with this or there is some other language or tool which will be very helpful in creating application at pixel level?
    Samip

Pixel level manipulations is not the strong point of JavaFX.
For the application you describe, I recommend instead using Processing, lot of people use it for shows and exhibitions. And it interfaces well to hardware.

  • Help with choosing the right specifications for a Macbook Pro Retina?

    Opinions needed....
So I'm new to Macs, but I know what I want to achieve and I feel this is the right route to choose. I'm looking at delving into the world of music production, using Logic pro 9 and garageband, but I also enjoy watching High definition Movies and televison so I know that the Retina display is definatley the right choice for me. However, I'm unsure on the amount of RAM & Which processer I should choose. I have read a fair bit on forums and online about the new retina macbooks being 'locked' from upgrading, so the 16GB of RAM is an immediate choice for logetivity.
The choice of processor is when I start to become clouded in my choice. As forementioned, I'm looking at running logic pro, as well as high def movies. There is also a possibilty at looking into photo and video editing, Whether that be in final cut pro or photoshop... But I want to leave my options open.
I think the choice of 16GB of RAM, 2.6Ghz processor, with a 256GB hard drive ( as i have 1.5TB external space) would be a good choice. Once I've added on applecare that comes out at around £2350, Which is a significant investment, but one that I think will help me immensely for the future. I am interested in other peoples opinions on my possible choice because, as I said before, I'm new to the world of Macs and making the right choice is essential. As a side note, the choice of upgrades also ensures a reasonable resale value, which is a bonus.
    Regards

Both power adapter I have are different (at the magnet end) from the one in link.
Earlier adapters have T shaped connectors, which Apple later changed to the L shape, presumably to make them more abuse-proof. Either one is fine and the one you are using will not damage your Mac.
Retina MBPs and new MBAs use a completely different MagSafe 2 connector which will not fit (without an adapter).

  • Is it the right choice to make ODI as ETL on OBIEE?

    Hi ,
    I have multiple source (file,xml,progress,express)
    And target is oracle (warehouse)
Can ODI make the dimensional table from the multiple source?
Can ODI do support the OLAP ? which way?
Is it the right choice for DW with OBIEE?
Sorry if this question will shown my foolish about BI.
because I once use ODI on Data Integration part not BI part.
    Thank you

    Cristiano,
My first suggestion is to rename your file. The "%20" in "cSegno%20flash%20page.html" indicates you actually saved it as "cSegno flash page.html." Spaces are not a good thing in file names. Better to use hypens or underscores when yon want to delineate word separation, like this (mixing the two conventions in one example): "cSegno-flash_page.html."
I believe your site can be recreated using Dreamweaver to write the HTML and CSS, and can probably be affected using hot spots or jquery. Check out jquery solutions here. Whether you yourself can do the conversion will depend upon your coding skills. And people here will be happy to help.
