With IOS7, How Do I Shutdown Apps I Am Not Using After Double Clicking The Home Key?

Double clicked the Home Key.
Pressing on any Running App but cannot get the apps to show a  hyphen to let me shut them down.
With everything still running in the background, battery life goes down fast.

Double-tap on the Home button. You will see an image of the app above the actual icon. Slide the image up to kill it.
