With Lion, Mac no longer recognizes flash drive or Kindle.

I am using a 13-in unibody Macbook (late 2009) running OS X Lion 10.7.1, and I am having trouble using flash drives and my Kindle.  USB-connected printers still work, and my USB-connected tablet also works as normal.  Flash drives and my Kindle show up in Disk Utility, but show to already be mounted even though they do not appear anywhere else.  My only option is to eject them.
This is extremely problematic as I work off of my flash drive for school and need access to the files on it at home.  Immediately after upgrading, both my Kindle and flash drives worked just fine.  This seems to be a recent development, and I can't figure out what happened.  I have not installed any new programs or made any system changes since just after upgrading, and the drives still worked fine then.
What's going on?

Hey lorrainefrommalibu,
Thanks for the question. I understand that your iOS devices are not being recognized by iTunes on OS X. The following article may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/TS1591
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
If you haven't connected your iOS device to this computer before, unlock the device and tap Trust. Learn more about the Trust This Computer alert.
Restart your iOS device.
Restart your Mac.
Make sure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.
Check USB connections. iOS devices need USB 2.0 to work properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, check the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
Try another USB cable.
Thanks,
Matt M.

I have this problem also and my apps are not synced anymore. They show The APP square in grey with an ! next to them. WHen I click on the app box this is the ERROR I get. (The app “ABC Song – All In one educational activity center and interactive sing along HD” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?) If I go onto the iTunes Store site I see all my songs and apps I bought and they all show downloaded. I have synced one phone and ipad before seeing this error do not want to sync either of the two other devices I own till I know what to do.

  • I need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?  i use OS X

i need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
    Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

  • My Pavilion g7 no longer recognizes optical drive.

Over weekend, notebook no longer recognizes DVD drive.  Compuiter lists C: and its two partitions, Drecovery) and EHP Tools), but no DVD drive (I believe it was) H:  When I put in a DVD, the drive spools up a bit, then stops.  Auto-play does not work.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now listed and working.
If it still iit's still missing, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now listed and working.

Thanks for the speedy reply.  I have read so many comments about Flash being incompatible with Lion I was wondering whether to download it or not.  So many sites on the Web still require flash, however, you almost don't have a choice but to download it even if it is incompatible.  I gather a better version of Flash will be available for Lion soon.  Again, thanks for the help.  I will download the latest version of Flash.

  • Hi, I have a late 2008 iMac with a new hard drive. How do I install Mountain Lion from my bootable USB flash drive.

How do I install Mountain Lion to a new hard drive without having the recovery partition on it.
I have the USB flash drive with software on it but when I switch my Mac on all I have is a white screen & a flashing question mark.
    ATB,
    Steve.

Did you use LionDiskMaker or DiskMaker X?
Boot the machine with the option key down until you see your bootable USB stick.  Select the latter, and reboot.
When the installer boots up, you will first need to choose Utilities and Disk Utility. Select the target HD device name and then the partition tab. Select 1 partition, name it Macintosh HD. Format is Mac OS Extended, and option is GUID. Apply. Exit Disk Utility and return to the installer, which will now show your newly partitioned HD as available for install.
When OS X is installed and all updates applied, press shift+command+U and run disk utility again. Verify/repair permissions and verify the boot disk.

  • Is it possible to boot a 7300 with a PCI USB card with OS 8.5 on a flash drive? Thanks

Just wondering if it's possible to run a PowerMac 7300/180 with the operating system installed on a flash drive which fits into a USB PCI card? The old hard drive finally went bad and was just wondering if there was any form of flash storage alternative to purchasing a new SCSI hard drive. I have an original OS 8.5 installation CD, would that install onto a flash drive if the computer is able to recognize it? Thanks!

Unfortunately, USB support in the older "PCI" Power Macs isn't firmware-based, so it won't be found in the 7300's ROM code.  If available, it's through the addition of a USB PCI card and is driver-based.  You can't boot from a device, if the drivers needed for recognition of the bus (on which that device is connected) are loaded after the boot sequence has been initiated.  USB flash drives are very useful for extra data storage in those old Macs, but you really need to be running OS 8.6 and download/install the "USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1" for recognition of the PCI card itself.  If running OS 8.6, I've found that the optimal database of supported USB peripherals is contained in the USB Support files, that are included in the OS 9.1 Update.  The files need to be extracted with "TomeViewer" and placed in the OS 8.6 Extensions Folder.  Again, this will only help with the recognition of a USB device when the computer is up and running.  It cannot make a connected USB flash drive capable of booting the computer.

  • Mac can't recognize hard drive, and size shrunk from 128gb ssd to 1.87gb in disk utility

so my macbook air 2012 got the flashing question mark folder icon and i called apple. they said that it was becuase the mac can not recognize the operating system? or hard drive? Anyways, so i googled stuff and people recommended multiple things like holding option while booting, and others so i tried all of them but none of them worked. so i tried the command + r to go to recovery. i went to recovery and went to disk utility and went on the information tab of my hard drive since disk utility won't let me click any other option and it says that my ssd is only 1.87 gb big. It is originaly 128gb ssd.. so i tried clicking the hard drive and then restore, but none of it is working (it wont even let me click the option, grayed out). I just want to delete the whole storage and reinstall OS X, but it would be better if i can somehow retrieve my files. Can someone help me with this issue? thank you.

The SSD has failed and has to be replaced.

  • Mac doesn't recognize flash

i have a mac pro and every time i plug a flash while i'm working on the mac the mac does nothing and i have to Close and save my work then restart my computer when the computer opens it reads the flash thumbdrive and that' s extremly annoying and inconvienant as i have to plug all my usbs even the mouse before opening the computer. the question is , does mac have a special compatible flash drives (or moises)that it can read instantly or is it kind of a problem with mac .I need any info please .

I'm having exactly the same issue with a Mac Pro in the office. It won't recognise any external USB devices. However if you leave it plugged in and reboot then the drive will appear on the desktop. This seems to only affect the ports on the box itself, bizarrely if I plug anything into the USB ports on the monitor (Apple 24") it works straight away.
I've tried disk utilities from the install disk, opened up a console and ran fsck -fy, I've also done the bog standard verify permissions and checked for new software updates. Still nothing doing. Very odd! It's not a total disaster because we can use the monitor ports but ideally I'd like to have them all working!
My colleague suggests that 'plug and play' isn't working but I can't find any settings to tinker with this.

  • I want to buy some instructional DVD's, the site says it is supported by Mac, but due to flash drive cannot load on an iPad, if loaded on my Mac, can I then transfer to ipad?

I want to buy some instructional DVD's that the site states can be downloaded to PC's or a  Mac, but not iPad's as it uses flash drive.  My question is if I download it to my Mac, can I then transfer it to ipad?  Thanks all

Flash drive? Can you mean that it's flash video?
If it's flash video then you'd need to look in the app store and see if there is a third party flash player or a video converter for your mac that can convert those flash files to the mp4 or m4v that the ipad prefers...and there could be the further complication that the files may/may not have DRM that prohibit their alteration.
I think your best bet would be to communicate with them and see what advice they give on file formats. You can't be the only one wanting to view the videos on an iPad.

  • Disabled NTFS-3G External HD now Mac won't recognize the drive

    Hi,
I recently unmounted my WD External HD from the NTFS-3G preference pane, now my Mac is unable to recognize the drive.  When I open Disk Utility the drive is there but i am unable to do anything with it.
How do I re-mount the drive to NTFS-3G and have the Mac read it again.  I tried uninstalling NTFS-3G, reinstalling it.  Removed files from the system folder. Even uninstalled and re-installed MacFuse.
I am stuck as to how to make the make recognize the drive again like before.
    Any suggestions?
I am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
    Thanks

make sure you have the exact path written correctly. If you can, show what the filename is in itunes, and the filename when you are looking at the song files (i.e. through my comuter). Make sure these are the same, and that they are all usable itunes formats.

  • How to get captions to go with pictures when saving to a flash drive?

I JUST SPENT ABOUT 2 WEEKS GETTING NAMES OF PEOPLE AT MY GRANDDAUGHTERS WEDDING AND ADDING TO THE CAPTIONS ALONG WITH PLACE PICTURE WAS TAKEN AND DATE.
i JUST COPIED  AND PASTED THEM FROM ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 10 TO A FLASH DRIVE.  HOWEVER, NO CAPTIONS.  hOW DO i DO THAT?????

OK, for your family to do that, you don't really want to have the caption written on the picture:  for them to "delete it to print just the picture", that caption would have to be saved as a separate layer, and the image saved in a format that supports layers like PSD or TIF.  Then, your family members would have to mess around with some kind of image editing software that would allow them to hide that layer with the caption before printing it, and so on....
Here's what to try (and you can test the procedure yourself on your computer):
Right-click on a photo in the Organizer and choose "Add Caption".
Write your caption and click "OK".
Use File...Export As New File(s) to export that image to your flash drive.
Use Windows Explorer to look at the image on your flash drive.  At the bottom of the Windows Explorer window, you'll see the various pieces of info about the picture, and your caption will be listed as the "Title".
Although you have to do steps 1 and 2 one-at-a-time for each photo, when you're done with those steps, you can highlight all the images and do step 3 for all of them at once.
Does that accomplish what you're looking for?
