My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

I have a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.4. The DVD player does not have a feature to store film clips. Why? This is useful for my work and I had it on my older computer? Why the loss of capacity?

I cannot recall the DVD player ever being a place to "store" videos - it is simply an app to play videos.
If your machine is new, then iMovie should be included as the "shrunk" version of iLife is included with Lion (iMovie, Garageband, and iPhoto). However, iMovie is not a place to store videos either - it is a video editor. You import your clips and edit them in order to then burn to a DVD or share via a social media site.
Have you considered simply dragging the clips to your folder "Movies"? That would be a great place to just store them (please be aware that videos are usually large files, so keep your hard drive space in mind so you keep a minimum free and available for the OS to operate properly):

  • Hello, Trying to run Bootcamp on my 15" Macbook Pro (Maverick).60 gig available on my computer's hard drive and 250 gig on a separate hard drive that I have attached which is single partitioned. Keeps saying "The startup disk does not have enough space"

    Hello,
I'm trying to run Bootcamp on my 15" Macbook Pro (Maverick). I have 60 gig available on my computer's hard drive and have 250 gig on a separate hard drive that I have attached, which is single partitioned (MS-DOS FAT). It keeps saying "The startup disk does not have enough space, you must have 28 gig of free space available" Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice Bob The Fisherman. I'm just reading what turbostar has kindly written and it appears that perhaps, if I take advice from you both, I need to free more space up on the computer's hard drive?
With the external hard drive; would it be advisable to defragment? Know of any defrag freeware for Mac OSX?
    Many thanks to you both.

  • I'm getting this error with bootcamp "The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned"

    Here's the story...
I had a dual boot configuration on my mac with Mac OS X Lion and Windows XP (made with bootcamp).
    I decided to reinstall windows.
I deleted the windows partition using BootCamp.
Tried to recreate the Windows partition with Boot Camp and got: "The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned  You must have at least 10 GB of free space available"
After reading several posts on this forum I decided to defrag the hard drive and try again.
The defrag did not work and I'm still getting the error, I have 22 gb of free space on my drive.
    Any suggestions?
Also, I tried repair disk and repair permissions
Hmm, my external harddrive says on the box "OS X 10.5.8 or higher (32-bit kernel only)"  Could the 32-bit requirement be an issue? Is lion 64-bit?

Boot Camp must be able to allocate a contiguous block of space on the drive. If it cannot find 10 GBs of contiguous space, then you cannot create the Windows partition.
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive.
Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
Boot from the external hard drive.
    Erase the internal hard drive.
Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.

  • Warning that the GPU accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer does not have enough free memory to operate

[UPDATE: Memory handling for the ray-traced 3D renderer is greatly improved by installing the After Effects CC (12.2) or After Effects CS6 (11.0.4) update.]
You may see a warning message when using After Effects CC (12.1) that the GPU accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer does not have enough free memory to operate.
When the GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer is disabled, the CPU version of the ray-traced 3D renderer will operate.
The message about the GPU-accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer not having enough free memory to operate is because of a change in After Effects CC (12.1) to actually warn you when your computer was in a dangerously low VRAM state. In After Effects CC (12.0) and After Effects CS6 (11.0), a computer with very little VRAM could still try to use the GPU accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer, but it would very, very, very often crash. So, now, After Effects CC (12.1) is just detecting the condition that would lead to a crash, telling you about it, and disabling the GPU acceleration until you have dealt with the problem.
So, how do you deal with this low-memory condition? You free up VRAM. This means closing all applicaitons that use GPU memory, which includes web browsers (yes, web browsers these days use the GPU). It also means disconnecting additional monitors, each of which uses a lot of VRAM. In some cases, restarting the computer is necessary.
This is primarily a problem on Mac OS with cards with 1GB of VRAM, such as the GT 650M in the MacBook Pro. These cards on this OS have just barely enough GPU memory (VRAM) to make use of the GPU-accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer under even the best of circumstances. If you want to use the GPU-accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer, you should really be using a more powerful GPU, one with more VRAM.
Note that this has nothing to do with the OpenGL GPU features in After Effects. Details of the GPU features are here: http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2012/05/gpu-cuda-opengl-features-in-after-effects-cs6. html

    hey Todd
i have the exact same problem but with my new macpro with renderay no matter what i do even a simple 3d extraction the renderay crashes! My cuda is full up to date and everything not sure why! if you have any way to resolve this issue would be awesome and help us out since i am on a deadline! at the moment!
I have attached a few screen shots and my computer specs! as you can see the GPU Should not be running low on memory xD since its pretty much nearly full speced!
    The error!
This is what was there! and all i added was a extractor after this and the error above appears!
and this is my computer specs as you can see there is no lack of Power, Ram or VRAM here! so not sure why this error is occurring even after updating CUDA
if you have anything else i could try please let me know! Thanks!

  • Quota deduction when EE has been inactive for more than 180 days / Advance quota days when employee does not have enough balance

    Dear experts,
We have two requirements regarding to the "Anual leave" quota.
    1. Quota reduction when employee is inactive for more than 180 days
    2. Advance quota days when employeee does not have enough balance
We have in place an "Anual Leave" quota related to a calendar year period, that gets generated dialy in time evaluation. This quota gets the employee entitlement from a set of rules that stored the corresponding balance in a period time type, that is the one that we defined in the customizing. This is working fine. The problems start when we try to incorporate the other two requirements.
Regarding the first requirement, if the employee has been inactive for more than 180 days in a calendar year due to unpaid leave, we need to start quota reduction as follow,
First, we need to clear the balance that was calculated above in the schema.
Then, we need to calculate one leave day for every 20 days worked till the end of the year, considering as such, everyday the employee is expected to work, except days on which the employee has been absent on unpaid leave.
For the second requirement we created a manual quota call "Advance Anual Leave". So, if the employee, wishes to take 20 working days holiday, but in his/her Anual Leave quota has only 10 days available, we have to create an "Advance Anual Leave" quota manualy for 10 days. When the quota for next year gets generated, we need to deduct these advanced 10 days from it. This deduction should stop the year after.
The problem we are finding with these two requirements is that, due to the Anual Leave quota gets generated dialy, we can't get the balance right.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Alex

  • "The Finder does not have enough memory available"

"The Finder does not have enough memory available"
Situation: G4 (AGP Graphics), OS 9.0 with tons of memory.
Problem: Only with any browser viz Explorer, Communicator, iCab or Opera (all versions). Starts off fine. I have broadband. Then steadily goes slower and slower till virtually stops even with just the one browser and one window and no other programs in use. Try to do anything else and above message appears. The problem seems to involves the operating system and the way it interacts with the code of certain sites eg Ebay. It has nothing to do with PRAM, or allocation of memory to the browser or deleting various Preferences. The deletion of Finder, Memory etc Preferences, quitting, restarting all deal with the symptoms and are not a permanent cure. The primary symptom is a massive loss of available memory, not even enough to run a single browser and one window! Any simple solutions? I realise I can upgrade to OS 9.2. Will this work? Apart from this browser problem I am happy with my present set so is there a simpler solution apart from upgrading?

Thankyou to all for the welcome and your responses to my query.
I have 640mb of RAM. The problem is intermitent and is determined to a great extent by the sites which I visit. Yahoo for example is great - no problems. In another window visiting eg Ebay will eventually (variable) cause a slowdown. I have switched Virtual Memory on and off, changed cache, program allocations of memory, regularly used Norton Utilies to inspect, repair, defrag etc and looked all over the place for advice. Things run great for a while but it is only a question of time , months or even days, before the problem re-appears. I was surprised to find so little about it on the Web. Perhaps everyone else has upgraded or is on OS X! If I could have done something without upgrading I may have gone for that option as everything else is running like a dream and I want to keep it that way! I use programs such as Paperport (sadly not made for OS X) which I find a marvellous scanning and paperwork management program. To get it to work with OS 9.0 I had to determine with Cassidy & Green's marvellous extension conflict identifier Conflict Catcher that the Control Strip needed disabling. If I upgrade, I could, for Paperport et al, upset the Apple cart! I have also read about a program called Reaper which was used to deal, I believe, with Finder memory problems with OS 7 and OS 8. It is still available on at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/3783 Apart from this I know nothing more at present about it.
However, the following was one item which I found of great interest which goes along with your advice of upgrading.
    From http://www.icab.de/faq.html#q36
"Mac OS 8/9: Why does iCab 3.0 complain that it is running out of memory all the time?
This is not a bug of iCab, it's a bug of the "classic" MacOS 8.5/8.6 (and maybe OS 9.0 as well). The problem occurs when a web page has web forms with text input fields. The Unicode text input fields (MLTE) of these old MacOS releases do still have some serious bugs. One of theses bugs causes the MacOS to reserve almost all available memory for these text edit fields so there's no memory left for iCab. Apple has fixed this bug in MacOS 9.2.x (maybe in 9.1 as well), so the best solution for this problem would be to upgrade the MacOS. If this is not possible, you can disable the Unicode text input fields in the preferences dialog of iCab in the panel "Operation > Browser, Tabs". Switch off the option "Use Unicode TextEdit" to configure iCab so that it will use the "ancient" text edit fields, which do work OK, but which do not support Unicode".
Here is someone with a similar problem back in 2000:
    "From TacitRF
    Date: Thurs, Jun 8 2000 12:00am
    Email: [email protected] (TacitR)
    Groups: comp.sys.mac.system
This is ridiculous! I have hardly touched this machine today. Does RAM get eaten up while the computer is sitting there idle (and sleeping every now and then after I've checked email or looked at a couple newsgroup posts)?
Yes, it can, under certain circumstances.
Open your TCP/IP control panel. Click the Options button. (If there is no Options button, select Edit->User Mode, and click "Advanced.") Is "Load Only When Needed" turned on? If it is, you may severly fragment the memory in your computer every time you start a program that uses the Internet. Let's say, for example, you launch Netscape. Netscape tries to access the Internet. This causes TCP/IP to load, on top of Netscape. Now, when you quit Netscape, the memory it was using may not get freed up. Launch Outlook. It loads TCP/IP. Now, when you quit Outlook, you may not get its memory back either". Try turning off Load Only When Needed in the TCP/IP Options, see if that solves
    the problem. Hope that helps!"
I find that whatever I do one way or another the slowdown will eventually reappear. A bit like weeding gardens and washing dishes! Well unless there is a way of dealing with OS 9.0 memory behaviour with browsers it looks like an upgrade will have to do!

  • The disc inserted does not have enough free space

I created a disk image about 451 MB, it an Audio Disk. When I try to write the image to a blank Memorex CD-R 700 MB I get the message: "The disc inserted does not have enough free space".
When I created the image I used the disk utility and followed the help file instructions. When I open File> New> I can only select "disk image from folder", the other option is grayed out.

wow, this is my first real disappointment with my MacBook. I can't burn images, technical support didn't get me any further than I already was. I spent half a day trying everything in the world to burn an image with no success.(followed all the help instructions) Now I have to go into the Apple store to have them go through all the same stuff I went through today. Two days of working on this computer to burn a CD with no success.
My guess is that at the end of the day tomorrow I will walk away from the store with no computer because of a malfunction. What a wasted weekend.

  • Hard Drive does not have enough space/error message

Hello: I am new to Mac but have been having trouble with my iMac for a while. I can no longer download my software updates. I have an error message that states "Your hard drive does not have enough space" - 5.7 GB is required.
I only have a 1 GB machine. What am I doing wrong?
When I go to my Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, it says at the bottom of that window that I have 495.9 MB available.
The error message tells me to go to the Startup file to delete items. I go there, but there's only two files. I do have music/photos/but I do not understand what's going on with my computer.
In addition, it turns itself off often, for no apparent reason. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    J.Renee

The error refers to space on your hard drive, not memory. Unless you've mis-typed, if you have only 495.9 MBs free on your hard drive then you are definitely out of space. If you continue operating with so little free space you are risking a catastrophic loss of data.
To free up space you will either need to delete unneeded personal files or copy some of your bigger files off to an external hard drive then delete them from your internal drive. Alternatively you can replace the internal drive with a larger drive.
You should maintain no less than 15 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater.
If you meant to type 495.9 GBs then you may have a corrupted disk directory. Try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • "Disc inserted does not have enough free space"

I am ready to burn my slideshow on a DVD. The info window in the project indicates that I am well within the parameters to fit on a DVD (4.7 GB). All the gauges are green. However, when I go to burn the disk I get the error message: "Disc inserted does not have enough free space". Looking at the info palette from the Finder window regarding the disk image, I find that it requires 5.8 GB, which, of course, won't fit. How come the iDVD project says I am good to go when I am not?
    I have OSX 10.4.11 and work on a G5. I have 53 GB available.

Perhaps you may wish to use Dual Layer DVD-R Media (Verbatim / Maxell) in the event your mac supports this newer media. If not, you can add an ext. FW Burner preconfigured from Lacie or do what I did and build your own:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5826029&#5826029
and here's how I select Dual layer via the ext. FW Burner as opposed to the stock S-drive:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5566746&#5566746
The only other option that comes to mind for SL as well as DL medias is burning said image with Roxio Toast (fit to disc option).
