With Pulseaudio, no sound with other apps when jack is running

I need to be able to run other sound apps with Jack running (and, ideally, be able to route sound from those apps into Ardour via Jack). So I installed PulseAudio, along with pulseaudio-alsa, and blacklisted the snd_pcm_oss module as per the Arch wiki. At that point I logged out and back in and I still had sound in all my apps. I then set up pulseaudio over jack as per the Arch wiki instructions here:

including the scripts for qjackctl. I now have sound only in my apps that use Jack; Ardour, for instance. Can anyone help? I'm using KDE 4.6 with the Phonon-VLC backend for sound.

Do some debugging first, please. The wiki instructions are really quite hackish (but there's no real good way to automate this as of now).
Kill pulseaudio, start jack (till here you're working fine I see), restart pulseaudio, try and load the jack modules and check qjackctl or pavucontrol to see if they're connected. If not, find the error logs and google them. Then come back here and ask more.

MacBook Pro / Mozilla Firefox / Netflix / Silverlight Update solved - DON'T DWNLOAD FROM NETFLIX
I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better. Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG. However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success. So here's what I did:
1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
5. Go back to the Get Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

With 10.2 I can only use system speaker output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps. How can I set this device in FCP 10.2? (it is set in both system preferences and midi)

How can I set the FF400 to be the sound output device in FCP 10.2? N.B. The FF400 is set as sound output device in both system preferences and audio midi setup.

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
3. Select the Configure Speakers option
4. Select the Multichannel tab
5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

Un-confuse me: sharing images with other apps.

Hi. I've gotten flummoxed (not unheard of) now that I'm using some of my images in other apps. I would like to understand all of the options/behaviors for moving images from Aperture to other apps.
My confusion comes from at least three things
. in Aperture, one has access to both the Master image, and the Version
. the behavior may change based on the availability of the Master (is it on-line?)
. Aperture keeps Previews of images, and uses these (sometimes) to share with other apps
. this behavior changes based on the availability of the Preview (does it exist?)
. the file format may or may not play a role in having the image show in another app.
Is the shared image from the Master or a Version? Is it a Preview or something else? Does it have a file format, and if so, which?
Here is a (partial?) list of how one can share images currently stored in Aperture:
- Export via Export dialog (creates new file, user sets format and other parameters)
- Mail direct from Aperture via "{Option}+e" or equivalent
- Drag to the Finder (or Desktop)
- Drag to another app
- Open from another Apple app via the Media Browser
- Open from another app via the "Media" category is the OS "File Open" dialog sidebar (How does one control what shows there?)
- Open from another app via the OS "File Open" dialog and select a file currently tracked in the Aperture Library
What are the differences?
To cut this down to size -- here is my current need. I am starting to sketch using Autodesk's Sketchbook Pro. I would like to put an Aperture image on one of the layers. All I need is a good web-quality image (and I prefer to avoid large files). What is the best way to do this?
The Media Browser is not available to Sketchbook Pro. The "Media" sidebar category is there, but often doesn't list Aperture, and often lists an Aperture Library other than the one I want (there does not appear to be a way to switch the Library shown).

I am a natural media artist (viscous colored mud, a/k/a oil paint) who recently became passionate about photography, and just discovered drawing with a computer -- and I got baskets of questions about SBP (it is thrilling to use). I ran into SBP about 1-1/2 years ago when I found Painter to be filled with too much legacy code making it slow. I am an avid Illustrator fan and use it professionally, but it is not great for quick sketching. After checking out ArtRage, I decided to try SBP 2010. IMHO, it is the best program for quick sketching around, bar none.
Since many consumers are just starting to become aware of it (outside of professional design circles), it may prompt more online resources to begin.

try running it in either 32 or 64bit mode and see if this changes the experience. Locate the icon in Finder, right click "get-info" on it and see the checkmarks "run in 32bit mode" ..

Sounds like the iPhone is carrier locked with Vodafone and if so, it can't be used with another carrier's SIM card.
If so, only Vodafone can officially unlock the iPhone or send the unlock request to Apple.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Edited clips will not open with other apps

Just saw your post and wanted to leave a just in case note.
From the information that you and John T. Smith just exchanged, it would appear that you attempted to play back the saved project file (project.prel) with your VCL Player and Windows Media Player. You need to export the Timeline content to a file format that is supported by the player of your choice. By now, you have probably been there and done that.
This is the just in case note about projects and their project.prel file....let us say that you have two separate projects and you decide to put the content of one project into another. Cannot do. One cannot import a project.prel into another project.prel. You would have to export the Timeline of one and then import that export in the other project. Alternatively, those with Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1, 9.0/9.0.1, and 10 could use the ClipMate program to copy/paste between programs without issues. However, with Premiere Elements 11 there are some problems in that regard.

ISight not working with other apps

I've currently been having a problem with my Intel iMac (specs in signature) since the iSight works with iChat (the green light turns on and everything), but it doesn't work with other apps such Delicious Library or Photo Booth. I also have a Windows XP partition on here, and it works just fine.
With Photo Booth, I just get a green screen and no message. On Delicious Library I get a white screen and no message either. I've tried deleting the .plist file for Photo Booth, but that hasn't worked. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

If the problem continues, you may have a hardware or software conflict. Some users report that plug-ins installed by Delicious Library cause conflicts with iSight.
If your problem remains after trying all relevant Troubleshooting suggestions, uninstall D/L (or at least remove any QuickTime plug-ins D/L installs) to see if your system has a D/L conflict.

THe built in iSight will actually work with iMovie if you have the version of iMovie which comes with iLife 6. (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929 for a mention)
There is a slightly clumsy "workaround" available for use with earlier versions of iMovie, but you need a dv cam to use it - see http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051217210335199
I gather that "EvoCam" - http://www.evological.com/evocam.html - will also work directly with the built in iSight.
So too, should recent versions of QuicktimePro.
As for other apps, tell us what you wish to do with it. We may be able to come up with some suggestions.

Try these:
1) Double-tap the home button and press an icon at the bottom until the minus sign appears. THen touch the minus sign on all the icons to kill the apps.
2) Then, press and hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds, until the apple appears. Allow the ipad to restart.
If the problem persists, you may need to restore the ipad from within the computer's itunes program.

Bose airplay connection with other apps

Hi everybody... I bought couple of months ago the new bose soundlink airplay speaker, that connects via wifi to my mac pro and I can listen music from itunes library.... its great but I'd like to connect this speaker with other apps, such as spotify or vlc for listening the movie audio... is there something to do?! or speaker is only compatible with itunes?!

Can no longer operate other apps when Google Maps is giving directions

I have an iPhone 4s and just recently upgraded to IOS 8.02. I use Google Maps extensively for traveling, along with FStream (Internet radio app). Up until this update (and a Google Maps update), I was able to reduce Google Maps en route, bring up FStream and choose another station. Now, when Google Maps is directing me somewhere (using Directions), when I pull up FStream, there is a blue banner on top of the app that says "Google Maps is using your location." While this is there, you are unable to operate any of the controls (buttons) on the app (and, I'm guessing, any other app).
Now, having also used both Apple Maps (the ill-fated release) and Waze, I know Apple Maps also restricted usage of other apps while it was providing directions. And, Waze wouldn't allow you to even recite (using the mic) or type in an address while moving (obviously a safety consideration, which I can understand). I think they reversed that decision in a later release. But, Google Maps (up until now) at least let you switch between open apps and (in my case, in FStream) change stations.
My questions are:
1. Is this an IOS 8 "improvement" or a Google Maps "improvement" (i.e. how do I complain to)?
2. And, other than having to temporarily turn off "directions" in Google Maps in order to be able to switch stations, is there another fix to this?

Well, I think I've narrowed it down somewhat. In experimenting with other apps while Google Maps is giving directions, I find that most other apps are working, even with the blue Google Maps banner on top. So, in summation, I believe it is the old, out-dated, FStream app (which was last updated in 2010) that might be the culprit. The search begins for another Internet radio app where you can manually enter the station URL.

I have purchased two Toca applications for children and the sound doesn't work on either. I have correct settings for sound and other apps have sound. Any idea what the problem is?

Do all other apps have sound, or just the Music and Videos apps, and do those apps have sound if you use headphones ? If they do then have you got notifications muted - that would mute notifications (including most app), so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. If that isn't the case then have you tried deleting one of them and then re-downloading it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app to see if it then works ?

I agree, this is a huge let down. I didn't realize I was uploading low quality photos and people commented that my quality has gone down... so much for using this as a business expense for photography. I know people argue (just upload it from your pc) Well, this is a "retina display" High res, yadda yadda... so why isn't the app thats designed specifically for it?
Anyways, seems like an easy fix...
