Strangely, Skype cited Windows 10 as a reason for abandoning its touchscreen app, but said nothing about offering a universal app for the upcoming operating system. A universal app would bestow a couple of distinct advantages: First, it would allow Skype to distribute its software through the Windows Store, allowing users to automatically get updates and easily re-download the app onto new PCs. It would also let Skype have a single app that works across phones, tablets, PCs, and the Xbox One. As it stands, Skype offers separate apps for each of these product categories, and distributes its desktop program through Skype.com. That’s not to say Skype won’t go universal after Windows 10's launched July 29. Microsoft is working on tools to convert desktop programs into universal apps, and it’d be downright shocking if Skype didn’t lead by example. Still, some of the details on this program are unclear, which might explain why Skype isn’t talking about it. In any case, it’s interesting that Skype is heading in a different direction than Microsoft Office, whose upcoming touch-friendly apps will be completely separate from the main desktop Office suite. How does the WP (8.1 or Silverlight) scaling system works for different phone sizes (eg 520 vs 1520)?
eg. sip keyboard height 8.1 SL is 339 px in phones below 4.7 inch but a scale factor is applied for larger phones. How to determine the scale factor? Have seen that it depends on the physical display size rather than resolution. How to determine the scale
factor which multiplied by 339 will give the keyboard height in larger phones?

Problem with SQLite in Universal App (Windows Phone part)

Hello,
I am using Universal Apps project because I want to move myself from Silverlight.
In Silverlight type of Windows Phone project, it is very easy to work with SQLite either on 8.0 or 8.1.
But I can't find a way to work with SQLite in Universal project. There is no IsolatedStorage to check if database exist, and if it does not exist, Application will put it in the IsolatedStorage.
I always get message "No such table: kategorije" where "kategorije" is the name of one table in my database.
I guess that Application can't find the database.
Is there any tutorial (I have tried to find it) on how to use SQLite in Universal Apps with custom written querys?

Installing Elements 11 with Windows 8.. app??

I'm trying to download and install Photoshop Elements 11 on my computer with Windows 8. I can download it, but then I need to get an app to open it. What app do I need? I tried one that it suggested and it didn't work. Then I just had to download it all over again. So frustrating! Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

you need both the exe and the 7z. download file 2 of 2 (the exe), put both the 7z and exe in the same directory and double click the exe.

IMAP problems with Windows 8 mail app

Hi Guys...
I am having some trouble setting up an IMAP mail account on a Windows 8 machine.
When i setup the mail on the machine everything is fine and it is possible to receive and send mails.
After a couple of days it stops receiving mails. It is still possible to send mails, and there is no errors when trying
to send/receive. If I go to the webmail everything is fine, and I can see all of the recent mails in the inbox.
If I delete the account on the computer and set it up again, it receives all mails and everything is fine for a couple of days, and
then suddenly it stops receiving mails again.
Anyone else experienced this on a Windows 8 machine?
I am running mail.clients-domain.com on both incoming and outgoing mailserver.
On port 143 and 25.
I've tried setting it up with SSL just to test it. I did this with this mailserver:
mail.clients-domain.com.cust.b.hostedemail.com on both servers and port 143 and 993.
When i use these i get an certificate error in the Windows 8 mail app, and it is not possible for me
to accept the certificate or do anything.
Am i missing something simple on the Windows 8?
- Any hints or pointers is grately appreciated!

I'm not sure of any reason for this happening intermittent. But for your information, If you want to use SSL/TLS when using your email client you need to use mail.b.hostedemail.com as incoming and/or outgoing mail server. This hostname has the SSL certificate installed on it and can be used for transferring the emails in a secured manner.

With neary 100 million Windows 10 users in less than a week, make a Windows 10 universal app

Now that Windows 10 has proven itself, and has almost 100 million users already (if not more, it was 67 million after 2 and a half days), you must develop a universal (ie for PC, tablet, phone and Xbox) app for Windows 10 to be distributed in the store just like with iOS and Android.

Nokia Lumia 1020 - did not come with Windows 8 and app is not available on phone

I was told to install Windows Phone Developer Registration Tool, but I get a Setup Blocked message - This product can only be installed on Windows 8 or later 64-bit Machine...the notebook that I am trying to install it on is Windows 8, etc.
I want to load Windows 8 on my phone so I can get Cortana.

To verify, you're only having this issue with the recorded videos using the Nokia Camera app, is that correct? Since the reset did not work, might as well try using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/mobile/support/faq/?action=singleTopic&topic=FA142987 for us to further isolate this issue. By the way, when's the last time you've updated your phone?

Firefox for Windows universal app

Please create a Firefox version for Windows RT/Windows Phone/Windows10/Xbox etc as a universal app. I read about API restrictions on Windows phone 8/8.1 for Firefox from a different thread. I am hoping that with Windows10 this restriction is removed so a universal app for all the platforms can be created. Firefox has been sorely missing from the Windows RT/8/8.1 tablets and Windows phones 8/8.1.
With a Windows 10 universal app Firefox would potentially be able to reach a far greater audience than Windows phone or Windows RT/8/8.1 alone. Firefox is one of the browsers used by millions on the Windows platform daily (32bit and 64-bit as of recently). Please extend it to the other Windows platforms as well.

Non-Universal Apps won't launch on Intel Macs with Unsanity's App Enhancer

I just got a new Intel MacBook Pro and ran into a problem with lauching non-Universal apps. When I tried to launch them, their icon would bounce once or twice in the dock, and then nothing. After many hours and a call to Apple support without any luck, I started searching tis support forum, and found an old post with something about a problem with Unsanity's products (WindowShade & others). It turns out that their Application Enhancer component was the problem. Unsanity claims it is due to a bug in OS X that Apple hasn't fixed yet. Be that as it may, Unsanity has been very responsible in providing a fix, located in the App Enhancer Preference Pane under System Prefs. Just open the prefs and push on the button labled "Rosetta Troubleshooting". That problem solved.
Unfortunately, App Enhancer still seems to wreak havoc with Palm's HotSync Manager.

You will find that Unsanity's "fix" doesn't always work. If you install FruitMenu you will find many PPC apps fail to launch regardless of the fix. In that case open APE and turn FruitMenu off temporarily. Also click on the Excluded Apps tab and drag the PPC app you want to run into the list box.
Finally, if that doesn't help (although it should) then open the Terminal and at the prompt enter the following command line pressing return at the end:
sudo killall translated
You will be asked to authenticate by entering your admin password. It will not be echoed.

Developing a game as a universal app: where to start?

Hi,
I am a Flash programmer and I'm taking my first steps to learning C#. I've downloaded Visual Studio Community Edition to familiarize myself with this new language. Coming from AS3, C# is quite easy to pick up.
What I would like to do now is create a game that is a universal app that will run on both phones as tablets or laptops. It would be a simple 2D game. What has me confused is where to begin. Do I start with a blank universal app project? Or do I need to
use XNA and if so is it universal?

Right now, I am using this below mentioned event

CurrentWindow_VisibilityChanged;, but it fires even when app relaunches.

How to separate different views and parts of a single line of business(LOB) universal app for windows 8.1 with many users.

Hello am an intermediate Windows Phone/Store Developer. Am currently in the process of implementing a LOB app that will have three different types users, an admin, a student, a teacher . Depending on how a user logs in i would like certain pages to be exposed
to them and the rest to be hidden. The app will also store data temporally on a local db then sync regularly to an azure database(Can the recent entity framework 7 that supports store/phone apps allow code first databases or are there features still not fully
accessible in WinRT apps)...This i believe can handle but also kindly point me out to existing implemented resources/examples i will appreciate very much.
What am finding problematic is how to consume different app data stored by various users logged in for these different views. Will i need an asp web api is it really necessary cause i want to avoid it cause i have about three months to do it. I do not want
to create three different apps and one ASP Web AP, i want one single app and an api if possible, i know windows usually sandboxes apps hence app to app communication will be hard if not impossible. So my question is, is it possible to implement different
user session management with a login (Windows Live ID) which i can abstract various parts of the app from them depending on the users login id in the app. E.g How can an admin logged in the same app as the student have access rights to certain pages in the
app that a student will not see. How do i route different users to certain pages and can isolated storage store these persisting as a setting.
How can i know which login id belongs to which of the three users? How do i then assign different access to different controls of the app with their id,provide custom views routes,access right,session management. I think i can do these without an ASP Web
API is It wise? Building pages in the apps is easy but i want users to see different views of the app instead of one standard app depending on there login id, how can the NAVIGATION URI be used here. How can azure and features like active directory,azure mobile

Known issue: Remote deployment fails when windows 10 C++ apps (Windows Universal) with a reference to a Windows Runtime Component is deployed in a remote machine (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

When you attempt to deploy a windows 10 C++ Universal app that has a reference to a Windows Runtime component, to a Remote Machine (windows 10 machine), you will get an error message instead of successful deployment.

Right click solution, Go to Properties -> Configuration Properties -> Configuration - Uncheck "Deploy" checkbox for the Windows Runtime Component project. Then retry deployment to remote machine.

Universal App: no Application Insights for Windows Phone 8.1 project

I just created an universal app and installed the Application Insights Tools for Visual Studio extension. It was easy to add AI for the Windows 8.1 project. Unfortunately there is no "Add Application Insights Telemetry to project..." command for
the Windows Phone 8.1 project. Am I missing something? What might be wrong?

Officially yes, but you should be able to get it to work:
• Add Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WindowsPhone package to the “Phone” project.
• Add Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WindowsStore package to the “Store” project.
• Add <InstrumentationKey/> element to the ApplicationInsights.config files in both Phone and Store projects with the actual instrumentation key of your app. You need to decide whether you want to use single key for both windows and phone apps or separate
keys.
• Create a new instance of the TelemetryContext class in the App class in the Shared project and store it in a public static variable for use by the rest of the code in the universal project.
