Without keyword Search Web Part

We are using the search results web part and using REST API to communicate with Search Service Application. One of the requirements is the Advanced Search which has "Without Keyword". So, if we say Without "John Smith", it should give
all results without "John Smith". How can we achieve this using the REST API?
SharePoint Architect

Can you use KQL's NOT operator?
I'm using Search Query Tool to test, but something like:
http://hostname/_api/search/query?querytext='NOT("John+Smith")'

  • Issue in performing search using advanced search web part with any of these keywords.

    Hi,
I am implementing advanced search web part, and i have added few columns [  these columns are doc lib columns and NOT site columns ],property restrictions dropdown.
and when i  try to search for the documents,  contents from the subsites with the applied item from the property restrictions dropdown and with  "contains" keyword , and  filled-in the "any of these keywords"
    textbox,
the search results  are not displayed , though there are multiple documents which has the keywords.
am i missing any steps  here.? i have ensured that managed properties  were created and added in the properties.xml file in the adv.search web part's properties.

    hi Steve,
    thnx for the reply.
here is my xml file details:

am using the managedproperties without spaces. the problem is that, when i give  the word/words
in the "any of these words" textbox and  if i give a value with the "contains" dropdown
its not allwoing me give proper results.
After adding these property restrictions i have done the full crawl again.
@Steven Adnrews: i have done the full crawl, multiple times. Though these columns are NOT created as site columns, it came as managed properties in my Srch Serv.Appln, search schema page.
@Fabian: i am not getting your point. Can you pls tell, where will I see the xsl. i  think, the xsl editor and xsl configuration has been replaced by html display templates in SP 2013 Search.

  • Content Search Web Part - Result Preview Says "Invalid Request"

This behavior seems to be occurring in both our test and production farms.
ULS logs indicate the following entry:
Exception occured in scope Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.SearchExecutor.ExecuteQueries. Exception=Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.InvalidClientQueryException: Invalid request.

at Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ServerStub.InvokeMethodWithMonitoredScope(Object target, String methodName, XmlNodeList args, ProxyContext proxyContext, Boolean& isVoid)
I have used very simple queries, to see if it's KQL error on our part, such as ContentType:"CType Name"
When we use developer dashboard I can see the XML for the search request which the CSOM is dispatching however, I believe this to be completely out of the box.
Do you have any suggestions as to why the request may be considered invalid and what diagnostics could be run to better isolate why this OOB feature is not working?
We are using Enterprise SP2013 On Prem.
    thanks

    Aries,
Here is a description of what I see.
    1) This is the out of the box (non-customized) CSWP
    2) Upon clicking the "Change Query" button on the toolpart the dialog window opens.  The Search Result Preview says "This query returned no results" but as per the JSON response above, it appears that there is "ResultTables" present in the response.
Occasionally, a preview-result does show up but this is not consistent.  The JSON response seems to be identical.
Initial response - shows "Query returned no results" however, I see results in the JSON below. I have replaced our hostname w/ intranet.contoso.com

    This is the  KQL. (above)
Next, we immediately click "Test query" without modifying the KQL. We send an XML request using the web part however, in that case, the XML variables are replaced with the $-syntax, this occurred within the web part through no effort of ours.  The behavior
    shows "Invalid Request"
Can you explain what you mean by "There is customization in the web part"?  We have used the out of the box web part.
Any subsequent query modification in the query-builder dialog-window causes the $-syntax.  When i illustrated the comparisons of the XML-request above the only difference in between the two requests is that the left-side is created by the initial-load
of the QueryBuilder dialog and the right-side is created when we click "Test query" (immediately after) in the Advanced Mode screen.
We do have a custom master page and I will try to revert back as close as possible to vanilla SharePoint and test.  But to address your earlier point, no customization to the Content By Search Web part has been used.
Here is the full initial valid request

  • Content Search Web Part with Hover Panel - Problem with positioning with css

    Hi guys!
I´m having trouble with positioning the hover panel for the Content Search Web Part.
    I used
this article to help me with luck as far as to the positioning. I´ve tried some inline styling but maybe my knowledge in css is no good enough here.
Here´s a screenshot from how this looks like. The hover panel generates a gap between the result items, the same height as the hover panel:

    Hi Victoria!
No the gap comes without any inline css added from me. I´ve tried some inline styling, like z-index and position.
    So, any ideas are welcome.
Here´s how my Display Template looks like:

  • Content Search Web Part Error / Control_list.js not found

    Hello,
I am trying to use the Content Search Web Part but I receive an error:
    Display Error: The display template had an error. You can correct it by fixin the template or by changing the display template used in either the Web Part properties or Result Types;
Template '~sitecollection/_catalog/masterpage/Display Templates/Content Web Parts/Control_List.js not found or has syntax errors. (Load Template;)
I am working on a fresh installation (out of the box) Sharepoint 2013 SP1 on which I have applied the latest CU.
I have checked the folder and I only have one file 'Group_Content.js'. I searched over the web and I found out that I am missing a lot of file in that folder.
Anybody can help me solve this without re-installation of SP?
    Thank you!

Yep you are missing a lot of display templates if you only have the one.
Is this the root site collection or a new site-collection under /sites? If it's the root site collection, then I would suggest creating a new web application and site collection and seeing if the problem exists in that. If it does, then you may need to repair/rebuild
    your SharePoint installation.
If it's a sub-site-collection and the root site doesn't have that problem, try creating a new site-collection and testing in that. Also ensure that you have publishing features enabled in the site collection.

  • Content search web part to display only lists and libraries

    Hi,
I want to configure Content Search Web Part to display only the names of lists and libraries inside my site collection. I tried adding Keyword filter "Only return lists and libraries", however it is also returning list items. Any idea on this issue?

    Hi John,
    Thanks.
Agree with your point. I can't use any code (that is client requirement). Also, still I use, I can't use it in this scenario. I want to display most visited lists and libraries (in last month or lifetime). I can use managed properties such as ViewsLifeTime
and ViewsRecent to sort it If i get the names of lists and libraries. Let me know if this clarifies the question more and you have an idea about it.

  • Advanced search web part issue

    hi,
i am implementing a  advanced search web part , and in that  property restrictions, i have added  2  doument library columns [ not the site columns ]
from my subsite in my site collection.
but when i give some search keywords and perform   search, i am not able to get the search results in terms of documents/content.
any extra settings do i need to do for performing advanced search
    1) Do i really need site columns to be created under the site collection , in order to be  searchable ?
if i create a  simple document library column and cant i get it in the crawled properties section
in the  central admin's search serv appln's  search schema section?
    pls advice

As per my understanding you can crawl DL columns
Can you get that document in search results page? Please check to see if the site which contains the library is included in content source.
Could you please check site settings->Site Administration->Searchable columns, maybe the column is excluded?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/b97a43b1-c727-4daa-a0d9-a18e53e09dd9/list-and-document-library-title-column-crawled-properties?forum=sharepointadminprevious
Go to your Search Service Application in Central Administration.
Click on Metadata Properties in the left navigation.
Click on the Crawled Properties link.
Click on the Categories link then select the SharePoint category
Navigate the pages (next page arrow link) until you see ows_Title. Click on ows_Title.
In the "Mappings to Metadata Properties" area of this page, ensure that the "Include values for this property in the search index" checkbox is checked, then Click OK. This checkbox is not checked by default.
Repeat the same procedure above for your ows_Description crawled property to confirm that it is included in the index - which it should be by default.
        Start a Full Crawl
This will now include these crawled properties in the index and should now be available in the Managed Property which exposes them for Search.
If this helped you resolve your issue, please mark it Answered

  • Override content by search Web Part's limit of 50 results per page

    Hello ,
    Happy New year 2015.
SharePoint 2013 search webPart renders a maximum of 50 search results per page and it
is not possible to change this hardwired limit by configuring the web part.
If i set it to greater than 50, it throws an error.
How to override this limit of 50 so that i  display all result in the same page ( no need to pagination).
I look for a client side solution if possible.
Note : i have applied the solution proposed by Matt
Stark int this work around Blog  and i set the limit to 700 but the webPart still get it limit number 50 in stead
    of 700.
in my display template , i see that  ctx.ClientControl.get_numberOfItems()=700 and in my html i see only 50 items per page.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi PiingPoint,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to show more than 50 results in a page in core search web part.
The "Results Per Page" maximum value 50 is hard-code in OOB Search Core Results Web Part by design, so it could only return maximum 50 items per page, when"Result Per Page" value is larger than 50, it will display default 10 items
    per page.
It's for end user experience and performance. Webpart is mostly used as a portion of a page view which users won't want to scroll too much, its not considered to be a good end user experience. Additionally beyond a point we would need
to consider performance aspects to display thousands of items on web page views, hence a maximum value of 50 items without paging has been made available by design to take care of these aspects.
If you want to show more than 50 results per page, you need to develop a custom core search web part to do it.

  • Control the query of Content By Search web part or a Catalog-Item Reuse web part from JavaScript

Is it possible/supported to intercept and change the query before it gets issued by a Content By Search or Catalog-Item Reuse webpart?
I am writing a multilingual site utilizing cross-site publishing mechanism, and the out-of-box (OOB) web parts would perfectly work if not for the following requirement that I've got: I need to serve location-specific content to the end user. I have several
versions of each content page for each geographical location, and I have tagged the pages accordingly with managed metadata keywords. I also can deduce the user's location from her browser's IP address and store it in a JavaScript variable. It is here
where I am getting stuck: I am trying to change on the fly the queries the web parts issue in order to attach the information about the user's geographical location, unsuccessfully so far.
I cannot rely on server-side code unless it is a cloud-hosted app code. I am about to give up and consider a custom solution alternative instead, which would be relying on Search REST API and custom client-side scripted widgets in place
of the OOB search web parts. This seems like an expensive alternative as the entire site could have been built using the OOB web parts, if not for the location requirement.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ivan.

    hi
    I would check several directions:
    - in query transformation you may add keyword filter "Value of a field on the page". Documentation doesn't clearly says what "field" means here: is it only for site columns, or also may work for UI controls on the page. In second case it would solve your
    problem (it would be possible to add hidden field on the page and set value via javascript). But chances that it works like this are not high;
    - in the query settings of the Content by search web part there is setting "Loading behavior": Choose whether this query is issued on the server while the page is loading, which is better for your main content, or from the browser after the page appears.
    I.e. if you will choose 2nd option there will be a chance to intercept the query on the client side in theory. All of this requires experimenting of course;
    - by default Content by search web part sends query to /_vti_bin/client.svc/ProcessQuery with http post from client side (you may check it in fiddler). You may try to find the exact javascript function which performs the call and override it by adding additional
conditions to the query (fortunately it is not complicated in javascript).

  • How do I add a search web part to search ONLY a subsite?

I'm trying to add a search web part into a subsite that will search ONLY that specific subsite for documents. Not the entire site collection or anything else.   Everything I've looked at doesn't address this specifically.  I want a user
to be able to type in a word like "SharePoint"  and all it displays is the results for any document in that subsite that has "SharePoint" in the title of the document.   I'm assuming that it's not very convoluted to do.

You can use site "search settings" and "search scope" to achieve this , you can use any of these method -
Configure Site settings -> Search settings to default to the contexual scope. This will pass current site  url to search results page to filter current site result only.
Use refinement web part on the search results page to filter results from a specific sub-site.
Create a search scope for the subsite , some example here for Sp2010 and 2013-

  • Does the Target Audiences setting work for Content Search Web Part Snippets?

I am attempting to create a page layout in SharePoint 2013 that contains a Content Search Web Part snippet.
I only want the CS Web Part to appear for certain users in a defined SP Group.
I set the Target Audience property during the generation of the snippet.

It appears all the time, even when the current user is not a member of the named SP group.

  • Office 365 - content search web part

    Hi,
I have an office 365 site, and in one of the page, i had added 4 Content search web parts each of it having its own custom display templates.
Now, the problem is when the page is browsed (intermittent) or edited (always), the CSWP's throwing error as 'Sorry, something went wrong'. And I found that, the corresponding .js files are not getting loaded, including the language script, because of which
    we are getting this error.
    Please assist.
    Thanks
    Senthu

    Hi Senthu,
This error occurs may be due to the display template has not been published as a major version.
Please go to the Master pages and page layouts in site settings > Display Templates > Content Web Parts > find the html file of the display templates used in your content search web part and then click the triangle and select Publish a Major Version.

  • Using Content search web part to retrieve items from another site collection

I have a web application that contains two site collections(team site + enterprise wiki), with the following URLs:-
    -http://applicationname/teamsite
Now I need to display the latest 10 wiki pages from the enterprise wiki site collection(according to the modified date) inside the team site. So I read that using Content search web part allow for cross-site content query. Currently I added a new content
search web part , inside my team site, and I click on “change query” button. But I am not sure how I can reference the enterprise wiki site collection's wiki page library and to specify that I need to get the latest 10 wiki pages , inside the following dialog:-
Basically this setting partially worked for me, I provide the following settings inside the “Build Your Query” dialog:-
From the “Select a Query” I defined the following:- “items matching content type(system).”
Restrict by app : “Do not restrict results by app”
Restrict by content type “Enterprise Wiki Page”.
This showed all the sites, lists and even pages are based on the “Enterprise Wiki Page” content type. But I am facing these three problems:-
    1. The above setting showed only the sites, lists and pages matching the “Enterprise Wiki Page” content type, that exists on another web application, and not that exists inside the current web application.
    2. To test the web part , I got the following results, But I was not able to add additional info for the items such as created by, modified by ,etc.
    3.  Also there is no way to sort the wiki pages by the modified date, as in the Sorting tab inside the “Build Your query” dialog I cannot find the “modified” inside the Soft by list
So can anyone advice how to fix these three problems

    Hi,
    1. In "Build Your Query" dialog, we can select "Specify a URL" in
Restrict by app and enter another site URL.
    2. If you want to add more information for the items, we need customize the display template, the following link for your reference:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sharepoint_quick_reads/archive/2013/08/01/sharepoint-2013-customize-display-template-for-content-by-search-web-part-cswp-part-1.aspx
    3. In the Sorting tab, we can use "LastModifiedTime" to instead of "Modified".
