WL 5.1 & VisualAge 3.0
hi,
Weblogic claims to have "better support for VisualAge". what do
they mean by it, how do you install it (is it a new integration kit).
how do you work with WL5.1 and VisualAge for Java?
peter.
It's been awhile since this question was posted.
Any idea when this will be available?

Actually, we're working on updating the existing VisualAge Integration Kitto
both VisualAge 3.0 and to WebLogic Server 5.1.0.
The release announcement copied a little bit too literally from the 4.5.1
release information.
I don't have a date for the release of the kit. It's a bit intensivetrying to
find the right set of classes to import into the VAge repository.

VisualAge RPG and crystal report + IBM Websphere Studio Dveloper client
Hi friends
My doubt is with regard to VisualAge RPG an alternative of java for AS400 servers yet iam posting here
I am trying to call Crystal report using VARPG The IDE used is IBM Websphere studio developer for iseries 6.0.
In VARPG GUI based windows application i am able to add Crystal Report Viewer (CRviewer.dll) to the ACtivex control object. I have to set the Report source and activate the Activex. The control has a property named ReportSource which is of numeric type. I tried to set the report source by calling openReport methox of Craxdrt.dll. I get a error as follows
0211 Error occurred while calling program or procedure OpenReport.
Cause . . . . . : The program attempted to call program or
procedure OpenReport, but was unable to access the program or procedure. If
the name is *N, the call was a bound call by procedure pointer.
Recovery . . . : Check the error log file FVDCERRS.LOG for more
information on the cause of the error. If the call was to a local
program, then the program could not be found, or the accumulated
parameters exceeded 1024 bytes in length. If not found, either specify
the full path name or make sure the program resides in a directory
listed in the PATH environment variable. Verify that the file
extension is correct. If no extension is specified, .EXE is assumed.
Is my way of calling crystal report is correct or i have to set the report source by any other way.
Thanks in advance
AshokansVamsi
You ned to specify the location of the reports in the RAS server.
Follow these steps.
1. Go to the crystal configuration manager.
2. Click Crystal Report Application Server and stop the service.
3. Click the properties button.
4. Go to the parameters tab and from the option type select Server.
5. In the report directory text box, specify the director in which the reports are located.
6. Click ok and Start the Crystal Report Application Server
thats about it -
How to run JNI in VisualAge 3.5
hi,
I can run my JNI in command (.java .h .dll .class), but i am failed when i put them in VisualAge 3.5 (professional).
problems:
1. I am not sure where to put the .dll and .h files, i put them in the resouce.
2. i can NOT get the result in the VisualAge, and no error output.
it is very important for me. please help me!!!
thank you very muchVisual Age needs to find the .dll when you do the loadLibrary(.),
so either put it into a path of the PATH variable, or load it with
ist complete path. As long as you get "UnsatisfiedLinkError's", then
the .dll cannot be found or a .dll that is needed by it.
Other than that, all should be working fine.

Seeking help for VisualAge for Java
Hi,
I am using VisualAge 3.5 Professional version to develop Java applications. But I don't know how to build an independent Java application that I can run it outside VisualAge. Can someone give me some tips? THanks!
I can build an application, and I can run within VisualAge, but when I try to export it, I can only choose either ".class" or ".java" file, so is it possible for me to build an independent ".exe" file from VisualAge? Because if I want to submit an software to a customer, I can't require him to install VisualAge, so what I can do?
Thanks a lot!Hi!
- Right click on project
- Select export
- Select Jar flie
- Give Path and Name of Jar file
- Export!
Execute jar File.... :-)
I dont have Visual Age Installed on my machiene at the moment, so there could be a step missing.... :-S
Plus you can also export your whole project out at class files and directly execute your class file, but thats not a good approach for deploying to the client side.
Hope this helps

How does one start the RMI registry in VisualAge?
To start the RMI registry in a DOS session, one can type rmiregistry. How can I do this in VisualAge for Java?
In VAJ 3.5 you do: window (from top menu) -> options... -> RMI Registry -> Restart RMI Registry

Hi!
I have created my first servlet in VisualAge. How I can compile it (I mean to create class file)? You have to export the package or the class. Just find menu item "Export..", then select "File Jar", on the next page select button "refrenced Resources..."
Wait.

Visualage and weblogic !!!
Hi ,
I was wondering if there is someone who has used these two products
namely Visualage and Weblogic together.
Regards
Suchak JaniWe integrate with the Professional version of VAge which doesn't support JSPs.
Their Enterprise version does, but is tightly coupled to WebSphere and an
earlier release of the JSP spec.
You can do debugging of JSPs in VAge but you'll need to convert them to java
servlets first (use weblogic.jspc, see the JSP documentation.

VisualAge 3.02 and WL 5.1sp2
I tried to include the Weblogic 5.1 inside VisualAge 3.02 Early
Adaptor but I got some problems and I think it is because of
a bug in VisualAge:
In VisualAge 3.02 Early Adaptor "private final" primitive Fields
are not serializable (read fails with IllegalAccessException).
I created an example which shows the behaviour, the example runs fine under
JDK1.2. (The example works in VA if you int-field is not final).
The problems I got have been in trying out the "stateless-EJB-Bean-Example"
and the JMS-Examples (VA only as Client). I think it basically stops you
from
using VA with WL5.1.

[test.zip]I know this is an install issue, but you will probably have better luck
with the tools newsgroup.

Deployment of VisualAge EJBs into iAS
I want to deploy EJBs (1.1) developed using IBM VisualAge 3.5.3 into ORACLE iAS (the one you can download from ORACLE's web site at the moment). My experiences in a former project were that due some incompatibilites between IBM's and ORACLE's EJB specifications I had to use JDeveloper when I want to deploy EJBs into ORACLE software. Has anyone out there some experiences with the deployment of EJBs developed with VisualAge 3.5.3 into the newest ORACLE iAS, and can you give some tips on what to do (Stay away from deployment, or: you can do this or that to get around the tricky things etc etc) ???
We actually deployed moost of the samples from IBM websphere/VisualAge to OC4J. We also have customers who smoothly migrated from Websphere/VisualAge to OC4J.
However in some cases you need to change code if are using any custom features.
There are a few issues you need to consider while migrating EJB code developed on VAJ3.5.3 to OC4J:
1. Aceess Beans: If you code is using Visual ages/websphere specific access beans you need to copy ivjejb35.jar file to $OC4J_HOME\j2ee\home\lib directory
2. Client Code changes:
In the client applications if you are using IBM specific JNDI server and RMI over IIOP to look up EJBs you need change you code to use OC4J ORMI and OC4J JNDI contextFactory.
3. Changes to EJB code :
The main thing you have to keep in mind is VAJ3.5.3 is not fully EJB 1.1 compliant and it uses 'finderhelper' classes to define custom finder methods. Most of the cases OC4J generates these finder. In case if you have custom finders defined in finderhelper classes you can easily customzie the OC4J generated deployment descriptors: orion-ejb-jar.xml to define your custom finders.
4.Finally you need to generate ejb-jar.xml and ejb.jar files since WebSphere/Visual age only supports serialized deployment descriptors. You can use Jdeveloper or Ant tool to do that.
Otherwise it is fairly straight forward. If you still till have any specific migration issue you can contact me:[email protected]. Note: We are in the process of releasing websphere 3.5.3 migration guide soon, which will give a step by step migration path from websphere 3.5.x to OC4J.
thanks

The only thing I can think of is to specify another javac compiler as VAJ does not expose its javac. We do not support JSP
development in the VisualAge Integration Kit due to issues such as those pointed out by you.

The messed up thing is that it WORKS on my machine, but not on the other
machines. I've gone as far as reinstalling onto another machine,
mapping the same folders to the same drive letters, and copying the
resource files -- in effect, creating an identical setup -- and still
have problems.

VisualAge Java Connection to Oracle
Does anyone have any suggestions for this problem?
I am trying to connect to an Oracle 8 database from within VisualAge Java Prof. 3.5. I am using a servlet to access this database.
I can connect to this instance using SQL*Plus without a problem.... This SQL*Plus connection is done using the same connection string as I have coded in VA (after the @ sign).
The connection string I am using is:
jdbc:oracle:thin:@(description=(address_list=(address=(protocol=tcp)(port=1521)(host=172.17.1.57)))(connect_data=(sid=iasdev))(source_route=yes))
The oracle.jdbc drivers are found...I imported classes111.zip into VisualAge and set the project in my ClassPath.
The registerDriver or Class.forName methods work fine. The problem is on the DriverManager.getConnection() call. The error message is:
'No more data to read from socket'.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just to confirm for u. U should have
$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip or classess102.zip. There is
also a README there which show how to connect, sample code etc.
If these files already installed, then i don't know what is the
problem. U have to have these files, dirs.

Problem with JRootPane in VisualAge
I imported a java program (that worked fine on its own) to VisualAge. When I try to run, I get the following error:
Uncaught exception (java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.sun.java.swing.JRootPane)
The gui program creates a class that extends JFrame. The error occurs in a function called in the class constructor, in code added by VisualAge that sets the rootPane by creating a new JRootPane. Any help would be very appreciated!Your com.sun.java.swing does not have JOptionPane.
Only jfc version 1.0.3 onwards has it, the versions before it don't have it, that is what i believe.
Right now you seem to be using JFC, You might want to use the latest version of it. -
Using Websphere test env. in VisualAge
I am trying to test a web app using the Websphere test environment in VisualAge. What url do I type into my browser to view the example web apps?
Make sure you have these features added to your workspace (File->Quick Start->Features->Add Feature):
IBM WebSphere Java Libraries
IBM WebSphere Test Environment
IBM XML Parser for Java
Sun Servlet API
I'm not sure if you need all of these or maybe others. But let me know how it goes. Then just make sure you start up your test environment, start the Servlet Engine, and the Persistent Name Server.
All of your files should be located somewhere like this:
C:\Program Files\IBM\VisualAge for Java\ide\project_resources\IBM WebSphere Test Environment\hosts\default_host\default_app
There should be a default_app.webapp file in the servlets directory that may give you some options to change.
If that doesn't work for you and you have VA 3.5.3 take a look at the Tomcat Test Environment. It's very easy to install and run. http://www7.software.ibm.com/vad.nsf/FrameData/Master?OpenDocument&Title=Overview&FSet=1&Doc3=4556&Doc4=4567
Hope this helps!

Saving podcasts as playlists + sync to iPod
Trouble moving podcasts to playlist. My attempts are thwarted by some internal logic I do not understand. Also, I dragged and dropped several podcasts to a custom playlist. These display on my laptop but only 30% sync to the iPod. What's that about?
