WLAN Controller module and LAP connection

Hi,
I'm new to setting up WLC and LAP. My question is, do the WLC and LAP require a wired connection between them? Can't they be set up with wireless connection?
Thanks!

Hi,
The Wireless runs on top of Wired network.. so to get the wireless network up and running, the wired network should be up.
Now regardyour question..
WLC will be connected to the switch or the router.... the LAP will get connected to the switch or the router..
So the WLC and the LAP are connected indirectly to wired... however the wirless comes into picture when we have a client to connect.. instead of holding a LAN cable plugged into the laptop we can move around using wireless.
I request you to let me know if the above answered your question.
Regards
Surendra

    Hello,
I recently purchased a 2112 Wlan controller an a number of LAP1042n Ap's.  The AP's will not associate to the controller and the message I receive in the console of the AP is that the firmware AIR-WLC2100-K9-6-0-199-4.aes  does not support this model?  Can someone please verify this is the case?
Will firmware AIR-WLC2100-K9-7-0-98-0.aes  overcome this issue?

  • (IMP)Application module and database connection

    Hi,
How application module pooling and database connection pooling is working ?
Currently i m facing a problem like if i am creating 10 browser session then it doesn't mean that i'll have only 10 db sessions. While closing the browser session of application module time out respective db session is not removed.
In this case, invalid db session are created in bulk which is crashing database sometime. We have writter script to kill those session periodically but in this case if application module is accessing such dbconnection then we are getting session killed error or not logged in error.
To over come we need to bounce the server (middle tier).
Is there any proper way to solve this or am i doing something wrong ?
Please let me know if you need any more details.

  • (IMP)application module and DB connection issue

    Hi,
In my BC4J application, Application module is not releasing DB connection after the execution of the JSP page. It usually takes approx 3500-4000sec. to release it. On what parameters this time is dependent??
I am using data-source to connect to DB. Application Module configurations parameters are set with default values.
If i select "Disconnect Application Module Upon Release" from the configuration of Application module, it releases DBconnection at the end of http Request. Is it a proper solution to the issue ? any performance related issues with it?
My JSP code's basic structure is
    try
    <jbo:ApplicationModule id="<AM ID>" definition="<Fully qualified AM classname>" releasemode="Stateless/stateFul" />
    // application code
    catch(Exception e)
// Code to take necessary action if exception occurs
    finally
    <jbo:ReleasePageResources appid="<AM ID>" releasemode="Stateless/StateFul"/>
    Please guide me on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Devang

    Hi john,
Thanks for your reply... in other way can i restrict the number of connections created for the application module By selecting the Disconnect Application Module Upon Release in application module configuration.
If i select that check box in Appmodule-->configurations->Edit->Pooling and Scalability means, while loading my screen number of connections are increased after completion of loading a screen immediatly connections also got reduced. if i select this check box whether it will give any other problems.
Here am using the uishell dynamic tab after opening more number of tabs am getting connection pool error.not allways.. thats why am trying to restrict the no.of connections opening.
please can you provide some info regarding this

  • ACE Module and Limiting Connections

We currently use the ACE module to Load-balancing IPSEC connection into SPA's.  Since the SPA's only support 60 new connections per second.  I was looking for a way to limit the amount of connecitons from the ACE to the SPA's.

    Hello,
Have a look at the Configuring Real Server Rate Limiting section of the ACE documentation.  I think this will meet your needs.
    Hope this helps,

    Yes.

  • Communication between : AP and WLAN controller

    Hi,
The communication between AP and WLAN Controller is ( Data and Control ) UDP.
Source port 1024 and destination port 12222 and 12223. Actually which device listen to which port or both should listen as control and data can be generated from both the devices.
How does the user ( wireless client) traffic is switched - if user traffic is a TCP traffic. It will be sent to WLANC and then WLANC forwards it to respective VLAN or default gateway ( depending upon the destination in the packet ).
Please explain / share the experience.
    any link on cisco.com
    Thanka in advance
    Subodh

"the LWAPP Control and Data messages are encapsulated in UDP packets that are carried over the IP network. The only requirement is established IP connectivity between the access points and the WLC. The LWAPP tunnel uses the access point's IP address and the WLC's AP Manager interface IP address as endpoints. The AP Manager interface is explained in further detail in the
implementation section. On the access point side, both LWAPP Control and Data messages use an ephemeral port that is derived from a hash of the access point MAC address as the UDP port. On the WLC side, LWAPP Data messages always use UDP port 12222. On the WLC side, LWAPP Control messages always use UDP port 12223.
The mechanics and sequencing of Layer 3 LWAPP are similar to Layer 2 LWAPP except that the packets are carried in UDP packets instead of being encapsulated in Ethernet frames."

  • Wlan controller connections

I have two options when connecting wlan controller 4404:
    1) to a 2600 router (outside internal lan)
    2) to a 2900 catalyst (inside lan)
Which one should I take as the best one ?

By default, controllers block Telnet sessions. You must use a local connection to the serial port to enable Telnet sessions.
direct ASCII serial connection to the controller console port
A remote console session over Ethernet through the pre-configured Service Port or through Distribution System Ports
Before you log into the CLI, configure your connectivity and environment variables based on the type of connection you use

  • WLAN Controller at HQ and AP's at Branch offices

I have a WLAN controller at HQ and want to put APs at my branch offices, but connected and managed by my controller at HQ. I know that if the WAN goes down, I will lose wireless, etc.
    my question is:
Is there anything I should watch out for with this type of setup? I will have separate vlans' for the wireless and data.. will this matter when it hits the MPLS from the branch back to the HQ WLAN controller? I thought maybe the vlan tagging had to stay consistant between AP and WLAN controller?

Hybrid Remote Edge Access Point (HREAP) is a mode supportede by 1130 and 1240 series AP's. In the upcoming release of version 4.2, HREAP will also have full support for voice roaming as well. With HREAP, wireless users already authenticated will remain connected in the event of a WAN outage. In addition, v4.2 will support local site authentication for HREAP deployments. If you have an ACS server at the remote site, you can even authenticate new users during a WAN outage. I wouldn't recommend anything in the 1000 series AP family. It's already been announced that it's going end of sale. Keep in mind the latency between AP and controller must be less than 100ms.

  • Extremely poor bandwidth and instable connection on Mac Pro to Airport WLAN

    Hi folks!
Following Problem: My Mac Pro delivers terrible WLAN performance while my wifes iBook runs the WLAN absolutely stable and up to 5 times faster!!
Been experimenting a lot, but nothing worked so far. It seems with every "update" in the recent months it got worse and worse.
    Here are the DETAILS:
    Mac Pro (2006)
    Dual 3 GHz Dual-Core Xeon
    Mac OS X 10.6.3
connected via 802.11n/ 2.4 GHz - signal full (connecting to 5 GHz network fails or delivers no bandwith)
    average of 0,5 MB/s download
    average of 0,1 MB/s upload
    Signal / Noise: -79 dBm / -89 dBm
    Send rate: 5
    System Settings > Network
    Airport DNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    All Ethernet MTUs: 1452
STRANGE: the data stream shown in network activity monitor keeps jumping from 30kB/s to 1.5 MB/s looks like like a very pointed saw. sometimes its continously high at 1.3 MB/s for 5 Sec then dead then saw again and whatever. sometimes it looks like a chart from the stock exchange.
Tried external System 10.5.5: a little bit of the saw-effect but much more stable. still only about 0.9 MB/s download in average.
    ON THE OPPOSITE...
    iBook G4
    1.33 GHz
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
connected via 802.11g/ 2.4 GHz - signal full while sitting right next to the Mac Pro
    average of 2.3 MB/s download
    average of 1,6 MB/s upload
NICE: continous data stream shown in network activity monitor
    RUNNING on:
    Airport Utility Version 5.5.1
Airport Extreme Base Station (Simul. Dual-Band II)
    Firmware Version 7.5.1
    Date bought: Feb 2010
    All setting on automatic
    WPA2 Key
Name for 5 GHz netzwork aktivated
    Multicast: high
    Sending Power: 100%
    Timeout WPA: 1hr
    further 3 checkboxes unchecked
My assumption: System 10.6.3 ***** for older Mac Pro OR Mac Pro's Airport Card is corrupted OR I need an external antenna (if there is such a thing) OR I need some sort of update or sophisticated settings.
Is there ANYTHING I can do? I am pretty close to drill a few holes into the walls of our appartment and get me a long ethernet cable!!
    THANX for help!

Ok, now I did the following: Bought a Edimax EW-7711USn WiFi USB Adapter and hooked it up to the USB Port in the back of the Cinema Display. Airport is deaktivated. Installed the Ralink WLAN Utility that is provided with to USB device.
Upside: Getting continous data stream at 1.3 MB/s to 2.1 MB/s = ok
Downside: USB-Adapter stays off after Mac restart. So prior using it, I need to pull it out and stick it in again. Then it connects within 5 Secs.
For only 25 € this is an ok solution. If anybody figures out how to crank up the connectivity of the internal Airport Extreme Card, please let me know.

  • WLAN Controller and Location appliance graceful shutdown?

Does anyone know if there is a supported graceful shutdown method/command for the
4400 series WLAN Controller and 2700 Location Appliances?
This weekend our server room will be undergoing maintenance and will experience a total power outage for a 4 hour period.  It is our intent to manually bring all equipment down (hopefully in a graceful manner) and then back up once the maintenance is completed.  As a result does anyone know if special precaution is needed to shutdown these 2 appliances, or can we simply bring down these devices hard which is the case with most other Cisco equipment?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Mark,
Channel 1, 6, and 11 are just about as non-overlapping as 1, 7, and 13. There's an insignificant amount of overlap, so it's just as plausible of a solution, even in Europe. I honestly don't know why you wouldn't use the extra channels to eliminate the minor overlap - every bit helps.
The "channel blanket" or "virtual cell" WLAN design philosophy is rapidly spreading. Cisco maintains that it's a standards violation and I've heard no talk of them purchasing the not-to-be-named company or of them adopting the same design philosophy. I sincerely hope that they do one of the two soon, however, because it's very good design that's difficult for Cisco to compete against.

  • Wlan controller and branch office AP (vlan config)

    Hi,
Our wlan controller is located in HQ office and we have APs in branch office. Is it possible to implement two different SSIDs and they should be in two different vlans? So should we configure the AP trunk?
REAP does not support IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging. As such, it does not support multiple VLANs. Traffic from all the service set identifiers (SSID) terminates on the same subnet, but H-REAP supports IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging. Traffic from each SSID can be segmented to a unique VLAN.
    Thanks

    Hello,
As per your query i can suggest you the following solution-
Yes, it possible to implement two different SSIDs and they can be in two different vlans.

  • Wlan Controller Hotspot Solution

    Hi,
We are using cisco wlan controller for our wireless network. By the way we need guest internet access for our guests. Can we make a hotspot solution with only our controller? I mean the user will join the guest network and then a web page opens then user enters the credentials. Then he can use the internet.
    Thanks.

Its better to use different Vlans:
The LAP is registered to the WLC. The WLC is connected to the Layer 2 switch. The router that connects the users to the WAN also connects to the Layer 2 switch. You need to create two WLANs, one for the guest users and the other for the internal LAN users. You also need a DHCP server to provide IP addresses for the guest and internal wireless clients. The guest users use web authentication in order to access the network. The internal users use EAP authentication. The 2811 router also acts as the DHCP server for the wireless clients.
Note: This document assumes that the WLC is configured with the basic parameters and the LAP is registered to the WLC. Refer to Lightweight AP (LAP) Registration to a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) for information on how to configure the basic parameters on a WLC and how to register the LAP to WLC.
When configured as a DHCP server, some of the firewalls do not support DHCP requests from a relay agent. The WLC is a relay agent for the client. The firewall configured as a DHCP server ignores these requests. Clients must be directly connected to the firewall and cannot send requests through another relay agent or router. The firewall can work as a simple DHCP server for internal hosts that are directly connected to it. This allows the firewall to maintain its table based on the MAC addresses that are directly connected and that it can see. This is why an attempt to assign addresses from a DHCP relay are not available and the packets are discarded. PIX Firewall has this limitation.
