WLAN Security, Is Apple OSX Safer at public sites?

Hi, I am opening this up for a technical discussion for people that actually know the answers, Apple Techs please!
In the article
http://www.lanarchitect.net/Articles/Wireless/SecurityRating/
It leads you to believe only WEP enabled WLAN connections should be used, but in reality I am not that concerened about a neighbor piggy backing my home WLAN as I am concerned about some AH hacker stealing my personnal internet passwords and such, either at home but more of concern at hotel WLAN, public hot spots and now the fake mirror hot spots that are being used for cyber mining for credit card and other financial info.
My Question is this, is Apple OSX protected enough so that if by some accident you did connect it to a fake but working WLAN for internet use, can it be hacked without me knowing it? And part two, are passwords easy to get when using a 128 bit encrypted browser at https web sites like yahoo mail login, or a cradit card login site? In other words how much info can be stolen through the WLAN "airport on" state of the Mac and when is internet info at most risk? Are https login sites safe for passwords? I assume once you are in, and the site goes to http that all interent data is now easy to see? Or is the web browser still protecting it via 128 bit encryptiion? Thanks for any tech support only anwsers to this.

Any time you use a public wireless access node that provides no security then your computer is vulnerable. The likelihood of being hacked, however, is probably extremely low, but you can take some precaution by enabling the built-in firewall (Sharing preference pane.) You can also avoid sending anything that contains sensitive information you may not wish compromised when accessing a public WiFi node.
Many hotels that offer wireless access are usually behind routers and/or require local access authorization for guests only. But not all do.
As for protected networks Apple recommends using WPA2 rather than WEP because the latter is less compatible with Macs and is also an older technology.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Is it possible to move content between private and public sites after publishing the latter?

Hi. Is anyone else in this position? My institution kept its original iTunes U site after migrating our public content to the new public site last year. We now have separate public and private (university log-in only) sites and must maintain both. The Public Site Administrator allowed the copying of existing content from the original iTunes U site to the new public site, but ONLY prior to publication of the public site. I have two related questions for the community:
    1) How is it possible to maintain a workflow in which faculty create a course for the private iTunes U site (wanting to keep the content restricted to our students while the course is live), but then move the content over to the public site once the semester ends?
    2) With the new app for Courses and the Course Manager on the public site, what do we do with the courses already created by faculty as Collections (either in the public or private sites)?
I hope there are folks out there that can help.
    Thanks!
    Kevin

I'd like to see a discussion on this exact topic as well. Have you determined yet how to move a private course (apple hosted) to the public site? Can you use an RSS feed from the private?

  • Major Security Fail since OSX Update - Password Request from Screensaver & Sleep Mode

Like me, I'm sure you walk away from your Mac with the knowledge that your computer is safe from prying eyes once the screensaver or sleep mode activates.
    Not anymore..!
Since the recent 10.10.3 OSX update to fix a hidden backdoor API security issue, Apple have unknowingly left users wide open with an error in System Preferences' Security & Privacy.
It is recommended that users shut down their machine and not rely on screensaver and sleep mode security.
The password request does NOT work...
    Well done, Apple.

My Macs all ask for passwords still, however none of them will automatically start the screensaver anymore.  I have to manually start the screensaver using hot corners.
I would have believed it to be an issue with a 3rd party application or a specific configuration, except all FOUR of my Macs started doing this the moment I loaded 10.10.3.
The other oddity is, if I sit and watch my macs with the screensaver running, periodically the password prompt / login window appears like someone moved the mouse or pressed a key (except no one did).
I have tried resetting to different screensavers, resetting the timeout for the screensaver to something different....and of course, turning it off and on again.
Sure hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • Is there a recent security update for OSX version 10.6.8?

Is there a recent security update for OSX version 10.6.8?

I am getting more confused. I have Lion 10.7.5 and thought this would not be susceptible to SSL problem.
I also took Lanny's advice and went to "gotofail.com" and it said I was SAFE.
Can I assume I am OK?
Also,i have an ipod 4g and went to the same gotofail, and it also said I am safe. I have not udated the security patch as do not have sufficient space (need 2.7gig) but someone suggested a  go around which I have not tried yet.
I am accessing the net via a Veiizon jet pak, and not using open networks.

What is the best app for storing all passwords in a secure area? osx snow leopard

Keychain is nice, but I prefer to use 1Password. It's got a nice user interface, and does what I need. It stores passwords, notes, identitiy info, credit card info, application registration numbers, saves hardware information such as your router settings, and more. It also has a secure password generator. There's an extension that keeps a button in the browser toolbar for Safari, etc., so you can submit your info (password, credit card) with the click of a button, and without having to type the information in through the website you are visiting. It also pays attention when you are signing in to a website, and asks you if you want to save the login to 1Password. Once you get them all entered, it's a big timesaver.

The link above says it is for OS X 10.7 and up, but if you go to the developer's website (link below), it says it works with OS X 10.6 as well. You can also download a 30-day demo from the link below.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 on the page that you posted from should let you reset them : go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account, then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

It works, but there are two problems. One is that the Map module doesn't work for some people: Lightroom: Issue with Map module in OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and there is a color management problem in the Develop module that was already present in Mavericks that Adobe has finally acknowledged and is fixing now : Lightroom 5: ICC profiles clipped shadows under OSX

  • Will CS6 Design Standard (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) (also CS5 Photoshop Ext.) work in Apple OSX Yosemite?

Will CS6 Design Standard (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) (also CS5 Photoshop Ext.) work in Apple OSX Yosemite?

What is wrong with Adobe that they do not address this situation. I work in a town that has a major design school and the students (who can't afford CC) are all out of luck running CS6 on the recent (Feb 1) update to Yosemite.
The whole Adobe community should be pressing them on this situation...as well as Apple. Don't these companies converse!

I'm looking to secure an Apple TV in my office. What's the best way to lock it down to, say, a table or a wall?

Some type of locking cabinet or drawer to put the unit in that leaves sufficient room for the cables to come out the back.
Then use the Remote app on an iOS device to control the unit.
