Wlan0 Spontaneously Dies
After 30 - 60 minutes on wifi, my wlan0 mysteriously disappears. If I try to restart it I receive this error,
[root@nikolai karam]# ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
I'm using wicd on an Acer Aspire 3810T (with the iwlwifi-5000-ucode driver) and have seen this issue on two different wireless networks. Does anyone have any ideas?

wow..... all i can say is wow.....
so this is my mistake, but i figured id post here just IN CASE somebody makes the same mistake *I* just did. i took arancedisicilia's advice and used the rfkill package to try to find my problem. i had soft and hard locks on two interfaces...
long story short... make sure to check the actual wifi switch on the side of the laptop... (facepalm for sure!). once i flipped it, both soft and hard locks were removed.
to be honest i didnt even really know it was there... new laptop...
none the less... good luck everybody.

Why does my MacBook spontaneously crash/restart?
My MacBook is suddenly restarting for no apparent reason. What follows is a detailed description of the issue and surrounding circumstances, various elements of which may or may not be relevant.
Several months ago I noticed my trackpad button had stopped clicking reliably. About two months ago I realized that the replacement laptop battery I was using (purchased on Amazon as genuine Apple product, but probably not really made by Apple) had begun to swell just enough to press up from the underside of the trackpad and prevent it from functioning properly. I removed the battery and have been using the machine with AC power so that the trackpad will work right. I intend to replace the battery with a new one directly from Apple, but given the cost I would like to make sure I can resolve my other issues first. I have included the above because it was roughly around the time I began using my MacBook without a battery that the symptoms below began. Using the computer without a battery may or may not be related these issues, but it is the only thing I can think of that changed anywhere near when the problems began.
Around this time, the backlight on the built-in display began to regularly (1-5 times per hour of use) shut itself off. The LCD stays on and can still be seen faintly in ambient light, but the backlight turns itself off as if I had turned the brightness all the way down using the F1 key. The brightness control itself seems to stay up, however, as the temporary fix I was able to find by researching the issue online is to turn the brightness all the way down (using the F1 key) and then back up again (using F2) and display brightness rises with my pressing the F2 display-brighter button. This would last anywhere from 1-1000 minutes (approximate) of use before shutting off (backlight) again and I would have to do the same thing. The length of time until the next shutoff seems to be shorter the brighter I have the display brightness set, but the symptom comes and goes in fits and spurts. Sometimes I can't keep it on more than 15 seconds and I just give up and drag whatever windows I'm working on to my external monitor (which functions fine throughout - I use the external and built-in displays side-by-side with a mini-DVI to DVI adapter), but other times it will go for a week just fine. This may or may not be related to my more serious issue below, but it began just in advance of the below and has continued to the present.
About the same time I stopped using the battery and started experiencing display backlight shutoffs, my computer began spontaneously crashing and restarting itself. The first time it happened I was attempting to play a video (MP4 I think) from the hard drive in QuickTime Player. The video played for a few minutes, and then my computer crashed and began to restart itself. I let it restart and tried playing the video several more times, even using VLC instead of QuickTime as the player, but each time the computer would play a few seconds to a few minutes before dying and restarting. In the hours and days that followed, the machine would randomly restart every 1-100 (approximately) minutes of use. The shutdowns seemed more likely to occur when attempting to play video of any format, local or online, and for a while I couldn't even play a YouTube vid without the computer shutting down. Sometimes the machine would restart to my login screen, but then if I logged in right away it would begin the login process but then die and restart again. If I waited a while before logging in it seemed to "calm down" and would login successfully. The restarts were more likely during video playback, but not exclusive to this task.
I noticed that the restarts seemed to especially come in "clumps," and that allowing the machine a rest seemed to help. I also noticed that the fan frequently (but not always) sounded like it was running at full power at the time of restart. I concluded that the restarts were likely the result of overheating. I disassembled the machine in order to clean out the fan and heat sink. I didn't find much lint / blockage, but I thoroughly cleaned out what was there and did a cursory look around the internals for anything that might appear to be out of order, but I didn't find anything remarkable. The restarts continued, together with high fan speeds just before, so I downloaded iStat Pro to monitor internal temperatures in my status bar. I watched temps pretty closely, especially when I heard the fan, but the highest I ever saw was 80 degrees celsius on the CPU die. I don't know a lot about CPU temperature ranges, but from some cursory research it looks like that is way below the cutoff for an automatic shutdown (and besides, it seems like it should shutdown rather than restart for overheating). I watched to see if the restarts happened at the same temperature every time, but they varied widely, sometimes even occurring below 65 C, with or without high fan noise.
The issue persisted and was becoming a real problem for me, and I already had a HDD I was planning to upgrade to, so I decided to do the HDD swap and follow with a clean install of OSX (via download from Apple) rather than migrate from my old drive because I figured that would take care of any software issues. After I swapped out the HDD and did a clean install it was three days or so until the display backlight cut out as before, and about a week before the first sudden restart, which brings us to the present. Since that first restart, I've seen another 6 or so in the last 4 hours. I have also noticed an occasional failure to get past the grey screen on an intentional shutdown (not the sudden restarts) since replacing the HDD and reinstalling OSX, but that only happens on occasion. The only things I have installed since replacing the HDD other than the OS are MS Office for Mac 2011 (from CD) and then Flash and Silverlight plug-ins for Safari. I've also transferred over some files from my old HDD using a USB caddy and have opened some documents, but I haven't run any applications or installers besides the aforementioned. I haven't been able to transfer everything from the old HDD though, because the old drive (in a USB caddy) drive seems to spontaneously unmount, giving me the "the disk was not ejected properly" message and causing Finder to freeze up with a spinwheel of death and not recover after relaunching finder in the Force Quit dialog. This seems to lead to the manual shutdown stalling on the grey screen as well (when means I have to use the button to force full shutdown). This could just be a problem with my caddy though.
Here is what I have tried, in total:
- Restarted the machine
- Disassembled laptop and cleaned out the fan / heat sink
- Watched temperatures (no apparent correlation)
- Replaced HDD and reinstalled OSX from scratch (by download from Apple)
- Ran Apple Hardware Test (no problems found)
- Software Update ("your software is up to date")
- Checked for System Diagnostic Reports in Console following spontaneous restarts, found none present
- Reset NVRAM / PRAM
- Reset SMC
Those last two resets I did just prior to posting and so far I haven't seen the crash/restart, although I have seen the dead backlight. It hasn't been long though so we'll see. . .

One final note - when the system spontaneously restarts, it doesn't properly shutdown as it would if I initiated a restart, it just suddenly dies, black screen, and then I hear the startup tone and it begins to restart.
Obviously this is an older machine and I've gotten a lot of good use out of it, but I still need it and don't have the budget right now to replace it so any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I'm pretty much stymied.
Please let me know if anything is missing / unclear!

Spontaneous disconnects from a WPA2 Enterprise network with iwlwifi
The wireless network at my work uses WPA2-Enterprise with PEAP authentication and MSCHAPv2 inner authentication. Given this, cacert.org.crt, and the username and password, I am sometimes able to connect. However, I am often spontaneously disconnected. Sometimes this happens seconds after I connect, sometimes, I stay connected for hours. I use network manager to connect within gnome-shell.
The following describes my wireless card.
$ lspci | grep Net
07:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6235 (rev 24)
The NetworkManager log is not much help...
May 09 10:10:24 ocelot NetworkManager[299]: <info> (wlan0): supplicant interface state: scanning -> disconnected
May 09 10:10:24 ocelot NetworkManager[299]: <info> (wlan0): supplicant interface state: disconnected -> scanning
Last edited by astex (2013-05-09 14:27:44)I had the same problems with my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6000 and the WPA2 Enterprise network at university. And now since my last update where the driver seemed to be updated when also netctl replaced netcfg I am completly unable to connect to the network. But with my WPA2-PSK network I don't have any problems and my Notebook connects instantly.
I'm using wicd but also tried NetworkManager, netctl and also manually using wpa_supplicant but it was the same problem.
Also shutting down hardware encrpyption and 11n like mentioned in this topic:
option iwlwifi swcrypto=1
option iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
I guess it must be a driver bug. -
Setup: Powerbook 17" G4 connected to Apple ADC LCD display (various) via DVI-ADC adaptor.
Situation: shortly after boot (specifically, about when the login screen is ready to give me control of the mouse), the Mac spontaneously powers off. Not a clean shutdown, just stops.
This only occurs if the DVI-ADC part is plugged in. If just the USB line is plugged in (but not DVI), then it still works. If the DVI port is plugged in, this happens 100% reliably, whether or not USB is plugged in or what USB devices are plugged into the display.
Over the past few years, I've had it happen on three different ADC-DVI adaptors, ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 years old. Once it happens, it happens every time. Changing Mac or monitor makes no difference. Changing ADC-DVI adaptor makes it go away. I've had this happen on 10.3 and 10.4 OS versions.
It's obviously something odd going on in the ADC box once it gets "old", because the system works completely fine until boot-up is completed. Then it just dies.
Questions:
(1) Why does this happen?
(2) Is there a way to fix it without replacing the DVI-ADC box (not cheap)?Same problem on my G5 1.8. Two 20" Apple Cinema displays. When I hook up the second screen using the adapter, the computer will run for awhile and then shut down. When I try to start up it shuts down immediately after boot. If I let it sit for awhile, than I can book up again. I will try another adapter as the original poster mentioned.

Spontaneous scrolling and mouse clicks
Not sure if this is a hardware problem or an OS or software problem, (or even one problem) but here goes. So far these problems have occurred in Word, Xcel and AOL as well as Finder.
1. When working on a Word or Excel doc., spontaneously my window scrolls to the right so the left margin is obscured. I scroll manually back, but it does immediately back to the left. Sometimes a restart alleviates the problem temporarily. Sometimes I can work fine the entire session with no occurrence of the problem.
2. In Excel, I can be working along fine, when suddenly spontaneous paragraph returns appear in my spreadsheet.
3. In AOL, in the mailbox and AOL-address book windows, I can't stay scrolled vertically to where I want to be. The window bounces back to the top or bottom of the list. My mailbox is often pretty full and deleting old mail helps the problem. But my address book isn't that large and I should be able to scroll up and down.
Also sometimes AOL will open messages from the mailbox without my clicking on them, and sometimes sends messages before I'm ready.
Today, while I was having this problem I force-quit AOL. Without waiting for me to press enter or click the mouse, Finder force quit every application that was open.
I've rebooted, repaired permissions and used TechTool Deluxe, and everything reports OK. But the problems persist.
Powermac G5 dual intel Mac OS X (10.4.8) Apple optical USB MouseTake a look at java.awt.event.MouseAdapter, which implements interfaces MouseListener, MouseMotionListener, MouseWheelListener and EventListener.
For sample codes on how to use these classes, read through the posts on the Swing forum and you'll find plenty.
If you have a more specific question, feel free to post back.

Best Regards,
ThomasHi!
Check that all enviroment variables are complete and still in place?
JAVA_HOME and DBMS_TYPE and so on
Also check that all exe files are of the same version, if not, make sure they are.
You could also try to update disp+work

IMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
I did this;
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK
after replacing the Hard Drive I actually thought I had fixed it and went to bed late but happy,
on waking in the morning, however I was not so happy it fired up and then died after dong -> apple logo -> spinning cog -> dead!!
I would be grateful for any help
Thanks
PeteHi Miriam,
Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
Thanks
Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK. -

Soma de dias em Data do Documento
Boa tarde a todos!
Estou com o seguinte problema:
Possuo um campo definido pelo usuário no qual desejo adicionar a seguinte consulta formatada:
SELECT +10
SELECT $[ODLN.TaxDate.Date]
+
(SELECT TOP 1 CASE WHEN OCTG.InstNum = '0' THEN 0 ELSE
CASE WHEN OCTG.InstNum IS NULL THEN 0 ELSE CTG1.InstDays END END as 'QTDDIASPREST'
FROM OCTG
LEFT JOIN CTG1 ON OCTG.GroupNum = CTG1.CTGCode
WHERE OCTG.GroupNum = $[ODLN.Groupnum])
A segunda parte já estava funcionando, mas eu não estava conseguindo adicionar. Agora está ok!
Obrigado pela ajuda!

New Macbook spontaneous restart
Hi all, I have a month old Macbook pro that has been spontaneously restarting with an error. It doesn't matter what I am doing on it; it will restart at any point in time randomly. I took it to the genius bar and they said the only restart they found was for software updates. In order to diagnose, they would need to keep it for a few days ( My job is all computer based, going to be difficult without a computer for a few days). I took it back home to see if the problem stopped- It stopped for a week, then yesterday I had three restarts. I am wondering if my issue is related to anything I have plugged in. I have a blue tooth mouse, a usb keyboard, and a second screen. I have tried the energy saver default restoration, no luck. Below are two error logs. Any thoughts before I have to leave it at the store?

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

New macbook pro battery for late 2008 macbook pro dies fast.
I have a late 2008 macbook pro 2.4 HGz Intet Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of ram. I've had it since 2009 and just got a new battery, as the old one finally gave up. That being said, the new battery dies quite fast and I'm not sure why. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thank you
Only problem is that maybe the battery you were sold was manufactured around the same time as the Mac. And LiPo batteries die because of old age as well as use. Take it out and carefully examine all markings, especially anything that can date when it was made, like copyrights or such.
With that evidence you can go back and demand a refund. -
ITunes spontaneously closes - no error message
I've just started having recent - but consistent - problems on my WinXP system. iTunes runs, and can see my iPod Touch. I want to add video files to it. So I select File > Add Folder to Library. I navigate to the folder containing my videos. I click OK, and iTunes closes. No error message; it just closes.
I try a similar procedure with File > Add File to Library, and the same thing happens. As soon as I specify the file, iTunes closes, with no error message.
Here's a list of what I've tried so far:
1) Rebooted system
2) Reviewed the Event Manager logs (eventvwr.msc) - no crash was listed
3) Repaired iTunes installation
4) Uninstalled QuickTime and iTunes, reinstalled
5) Deleted:
C:\Documents and Settings\(name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Documents and Settings\(name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info
... and ran iTunes.
No luck so far, and as far as I know, there is no other way for me to get files from my computer to my iPod. Can anyone suggest other solutions?
Many, many thanks.Ok... I called Apple Support. and they were more helpful than I expected. There are several things I don't like about Apple, but let it go on the record that their customer support was excellent.
The gentleman to whom I spoke (Case# 132295246) suggested that I try accessing my OS using an alternate user. My single-user system didn't have any other users, so I quickly created one (Control Panel > User Accounts). Once I was logged in as the new user, not only did the QuickTime player load, but iTunes worked perfectly.
On the tech's suggestion, I agreed to compare the service lists between the two accounts (I didn't make him stay on the phone for this). Unfortunately, they were identical. So I turned my attention to the system tray (in the bottom right-hand corner), and noticed the ATI Tray Tools icon. I exited the app, and suddenly everything worked.
Ok, we have an easy workaround, but we can do better. Any technically-oriented PC user with an ATI card isn't going to want to give up ATI Tray Tools - it's a wonderful piece of software. Fortunately, the program allows one to define exclusions that can be applied to ANY file that conflicts.
So for Apple's benefit, I hope this gets added to the knowledge base:
Problem:
iTunes spontaneously closes during use, no error message.
Diagnosis measure:
The problem is resolved when logging into WinXP as a newly-created user.
The user has an ATI Video Card
The user is running ATI Tray Tools
Resolution 1:
Close the ATI Tray Tools application before running iTunes.
======================
Resolution 2:
Add iTunes to the ATI Tray Tools exclusion list:
1) While ATI Tray Tools is running, right-click the ATI Tray Tools icon in the system tray.
2) Select Hardware
3) Select Auto-Overclocking
4) Click the Exclude tab
5) Add the following programs to the list:
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
6) Click OK
=====================
Additional note: If you have any other programs that will not run (no error messages), locate the executable, and add it to the exclusion list. I was able to solve my Java problems by adding the necessary executables from the C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin folder. -
ITunes spontaneously closes - no error message (related to podcast)
When using podcast>>settings>>check for new episodes>>"anything but manually"
Then, when podcasts start to update, iTunes spontaneously closes and there are no error messages.
I have temporarily set check for new episodes to "manually." So far this is working.
But I was curious whether this problem has been identified or solved? When using podcast>>settings>>check for new episodes>>"anything but manually"

I am experiencing some major problems with my MacBook Pro. I have had some issues with it turning on/off at random times, but today, when starting, I get the grey start-up screen and a recovery bar. After filling in approx 1/4 of the way, the machine dies. After starting it in recovery mode, it will not allow me to download OS X Mavericks- it says the disk is locked. Any ideas? I do not have a back-up and do not want to erase everything before I have explored my options. Help?
try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard) -
My iPhone 5 dies at 20-24% it doesn't go all the way to 0%. Will apple replace my phone or fix my phone for free since its hardware problem and I have no money. This is my second iphone 5 replacement. I have no apple care so I'm worried. My phone has NEVER touched water! I only get 1/5 of battery use. I've also spent 30$ at the apple store on screen protectors for nothing! I really don't have 220$ nor 50$ I am on a strict budget. I believe I have to pay 220 not 50 ford a phone replacement for accidental damage. I don't know what category this falls under. I really need a new phone or battery. HELP! Will I have to pay? Also my screen lighting is all topsy-tervy every I put my screen on highest it won't work I have to wait about a minute? Forgot to mention that my apps exit out by themselves all the time when Im using them.
So, have you tried a reset? Restore from backup? Restore as new? You seem to have a few problems but do not mention any action taken to resolve them. What have screen protectors to do with anything?
