WLC 2106 Disable 802.11b
Hello,
I am trying to enable more channels in the DCA channel list for 802.11/b/g/n. However, when i hit apply i get this message:
"802.11b network needs to be disabled to apply changes to DCA."
I do not see a spot to disable B. Would this be something i need to do from the CLI?
THanks!
Seth
Hi,
You ned to disable Radios before doing the above config.. here is the was we do it..
WLC GUI >> Wireless >> 802.11 B/G/N >> Network >> Disable 802.11B/G network setup
Now do the required setup and go back to the same place and enable it.. this will do it for you!!
Lemme know if this answered ur question and please dont forget to rate the usefull posts!!

Disabling 802.11b, what issues to coverage?
Hi All
I want to soon disable 802.11b support on our AP 1231 with B/G cards. I want this because I don't like to have 802.11b clients connecting and taking down the speed.
The question now is, how would our signal coverage change if I put 'power local cck 1' on the device?
Or I would only allow theese rates:
6.0 9.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0 which are only supported by 802.11g cards.
Would that change the signal range a lot? Or do you have better ideas to disable 802.11b support?
Thanks,
PatrickHi Patrick,
Here is some info related to disabling 802.11b;
Q. How can I set the AP so that only IEEE 802.11g clients can connect? I do not want the IEEE 802.11b clients to connect and slow down the wireless network. There is a second, parallel 802.11b network for unsecured clients.
A. In order for the AP to receive only 802.11g clients, complete these steps in the GUI:
Go to the Network Interfaces section and click Radio 0-802.11G.
Click the Settings tab at the top of the Radio 0-802.11G window.
Choose Disable for these data rates:
1.0
2.0
5.5
11.0
Choose Require for all the other data rates. These other data rates are:
6.0
9.0
12.0
18.0
24.0
36.0
48.0
54.0
Click Apply at the bottom of the window.
From this good doc;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item09186a008009483e.shtml
As for coverage; A fundamental rule is that as data rates increase, range decreases. 802.11b uses DSSS to support data rates of 11, 5.5, 2, and 1 Mbps each, with correspondingly longer ranges as the data rates decrease. 802.11g uses OFDM to support data rates of 54, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9, and 6 Mbps each, with correspondingly longer ranges as the data rates decrease. The higher data rates supported by 802.11g result in shorter range than the range supported by the maximum 802.11b data rate. Still, OFDM is a more efficient means of transmission than is DSSS, meaning that at a given range, higher OFDM-based data rates will be supported than DSSS-based data rates (all other things being held constant). That being said your range difference should not be too drastic
From this superior Cisco doc (Have a look at Table 4 for some good Range approximations);
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_white_paper09186a00801d61a3.shtml
Hope this helps!

Can i disable 802.11b/g in my new Time Capsule that supports 802.11ac? Ultimaltely I want to disable all standards under 802.11ac (when iPhone/iPad finally supports it)
I have read old wifi standards slows downs routers/acess points etc.Can i disable 802.11b/g in my new Time Capsule that supports 802.11ac?
Sorry, but no.
Whlle you could customize and maximize previous versions of the Time Capsule, Apple has "upgraded" things by removing the settings that would allow this in the "new" Time Capsule. -
WRT300n: disable 802.11b wireless
Is it possible to administratively disable 802.11b radio on WRT300N?
The reason is to do not allow 802.11b clients to connect to my router, while 802.11g and 802.11n clients should get access to network.
Solved!
Go to Solution. You cannot disable just 802.11b wireless...When you open the set up page of your router and click on Wireless see the Network Mode...You can disable all or when it is set to mixed it will enable all...When you select Wireless N Only it will disable Wireless B and Wireless G both...Same when you select Wireless G only(it will disable Wireless B and Wireless N both)...This means that you can have two of the modes disabled but not just one...

Client got not connection to wlan over wlc 2504 on 802.11b/g
Hi everybody,
We are using a wlc 2504 with 7.6.100.0 and AP 1532e.
I have the strange observacion that only clients with 802.11n (2.4GHz) can connect to the WLAN. Clients thats works only with 802.11b/g, they can't connect to the WLAN. Affected are all machines which want to connect with 802.11b/g.
This is a MESH WLAN with 5GHz backhaul and 2.4GHz for the user.

Thanks for any adviceIn some of the big name brands of wireless, there is "no such thing" as 802.11n on a 2.4 Ghz. No such thing because Cisco won't allow you (any more) to do channel bonding of 2.4 Ghz. It doesn't make any sense to bond an already restricted 2.4 Ghz non-overlapping channel (three) and squeeze this number down to two.
Can you check to ensure that the data rates for 802.11b are enabled? Maybe someone disabled data rates from 1 Mbps to 11 Mbps. -
Does the 2106 support 802.1q trunks. If so what do you have to do to enable a trunk port?
The 2106 does support 802.1q trunking only. You don't have to do anything on the wlc side, Just configure the trunk port on the switch to 802.1q. Also the management and ap manager should be configured as the native vlan on the switch.

How to find out how many 802.11b clients are connecting
Hello
We got around 70 Cisco AP1231 here in autonomous function.
They're all equiped with 802.11b/g modules.
I'd like to soon disable 802.11b here (school), but I should somehow find out how many people are still using 802.11b.
Any ideas how I could automatically do this?
I also have a WLSE working here.
Thanks,
PatrickWhether it is IOS software or vx works software you could view the number of clients by clicking on home tab:summary status page.It would listed in the top of the page.If you are using CLI use the command show dot11 associations statistics in the Prev EXec mode. Disabling 802.11 b clients on a 5508 WLC version 7.0.116.0
Hi,
We have a rquirment to disable WLAN access to B clients. I believe the best way to do this is to change data rates in -
Wireless >802.11b/g/n > network > Data Rates
diable 1,2,5.5 and 11.
Mandatory 6
Supported 9,12,18,24,36,48,54
A suggestion made to me was to untick the box in -
Wireless >802.11b/g/n > network > 802.11b/g Network Status
But I believe doing this from my testing disables the 2.4 B/G radio globally all together. Is there any other method for diabling B clients while leaving G clients ont he 2.4 radio intact? You could set 12Mb to Mandatory, I think that would prevent B clients from associating globally.
But if it is only a specific WLAN that you never want to support B Clients, you could always set that WLAN Radio policy to 802.11G/A only.... (I think that is still an option). It should allow G/N and A/N clients, but disallow B clients. I read somewhere that band select wont work if the radio policy is not ALL, so maybe not viable for you if you use band select (or perhaps this has been fixed).
Either way I think you have several options at your disposal, not just disabling all B rates..... (this this is the easiest approach if you want all B clients gone, and you have coverage to support non 1,2,5.5,11 rates.

How to enable 802.11n in WLC 2106???
Hi,
I had already posted for help with this issue but I could not find that topic in the forums.
So what I need is to eable the 802.11n service in my WLC sice 802.11g is the one working.
Regards!Hi Nico,
(Cisco Controller) >show country
Configured Country............................. MX - Mexico
Configured Country Codes
MX - Mexico.................................... 802.11a / 802.11b / 802.11g
AP Model
1- AIR-AP1141N-A-K9
(I am trying to convert it to LWAPP but cannot add it to the WLC yet, I have annother opened discussion for this case)
But also I want to enable 802.11a in the rest of APs which are 1131 that were converted from Stand Alone to LWAPP. -
Hello,
I have problem with new one WLC 2106 controller. I make this basic configuration (after reset):
(Cisco Controller) >show interface summary
Interface Name Port Vlan Id IP Address Type Ap Mgr Guest
ap-manager 1 10 10.10.10.21 Static Yes No
management 1 10 10.10.10.20 Static No No
virtual N/A N/A 1.1.1.1 Static No No
At this point, everything works OK. Controller is accesible via HTTPS, AP (one 1130) is connected too. But next I need create new WLAN and another interface VLAN - named ak-lan
config interface create ak-lan
config interface port ak-lan 1
HTTPS acces is still working, but when I configure IP adress:

HTTPS acces stops. In fact, it seem like HTTPS starts on new interface - it's accesible via 10.10.11.10, but (after certificate warning) shows only empty page (Page is not accesible..)
I dont have an idea why. I tray downgrade software (originaly comes with 7.0.98.0) to 6.0.196.0, whitch I use on another same controller, but the behavior is the same. Now I use software 6.0.199.4. Again the same behavior.
"show interface summary" says:

Photosmart C7250 wireless 802.11b fails
My new C7250 works well with USB and wired ethernet, but fails miserably (prints slowly, if at all) on my wireless 802.11b network. All other devices work well on my wireless network. I've spent many hours with HP and exhausted their first line support. They supposedly have opened a case but I have heard nothing in a week. Meanwhile, I took a network trace using WireShark and it shows a large number of retransmissions. (I'm expert with application/network performance profiling.) All you have to do is browse to http://192.168.1.xxx/ to test transmission -- don't even need to install drivers or printers to see the errors. This problem appears to be with wireless support on the C7250.
Has anyone experienced problems or success with 802.11b on this device? How about 802.11g? I would be willing to upgrade my wireless if I knew that it would resolve the problem.
What does it take to escalate a probem with HP for resolution? All 2004 and newer wireless HP Inkjet printers are compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks (otherwise we couldn't get 802.11g Wi-Fi certification). Besides testing for interoperability, we test for a minimum wireless throughput at the TCP layer.
I'd like to see the internal connectivity report that you can generate by pressing the <setup> and <#> buttons simultaneously. Scan the report to a memory card, copy it to your PC and post the image here.
It will tell me information about your wireless network and other networks in the area.
I have a couple of other questions:
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the printer and then does it return later?
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the wireless-router and then does it return later?
Are you seeing retransmissions of TCP, 802.3 (ethernet) frames or 802.11 frames? I wasn't sure at what layer you are sniffing the data at?
What make and model 802.11b wireless-router are you using?
Do you have encryption enabled? Does disabling encryption change the speed of printing?
How many wireless PC's (Macs?) to you have on your network? Do they all exhibit slow printing?
Have you changed the default fragmentation settings of your wireless-router?
At home, I routinely get 1.5 Mbytes/sec transfer rates between my 802.11g wireless-routers and my HP printers and about 700 Kbytes/sec in 802.11b mode.
One other thing you can try is to go to the printers internal web page, browse over to the Networking, Wireless, Advanced page and enable the configuration "In an infrastructure network use 802.11b behavior".

Does someone know if WLC 2106 support AP 1140 ? I read that AP 1140 is CAPWAP only and I don't know if WLC 2106 supports CAPWAP.
ThanksYes it does, you may have to upgrade your controller software to get 802.11n and CAPWAP, use the latest code 6.0.182.
CAPWAP was supported from code 5.2.157
The max throughput on the 2106 though is only 100mbps so yo wont see the highest speeds -
Help Enabling 802.11b Support
Can anyone help? All I want to do is enable 802.11b support on my Cisco 877W. My 802.11g clients can see and attach to it no problems. My 802.11b clients cannot see it at all. I have tried all sorts but nothing has helped. My config looks like this:
interface Dot11Radio0
no ip address
encryption key 1 size 128bit 7 BC48CE99C4E9B683819990D3C1A5 transmit-key
encryption mode wep mandatory
ssid *****
authentication open
speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0
48.0 54.0
station-role root
no dot11 extension aironet
bridge-group 1
bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
What do I need to add to make it visible and available to 802.11b clients?
Many Thanks,
MattI'd start by defaulting the AP back to factory default, no WEP, no authentication.
Check to see if the 802.11b clients can connect.
If all the 802.11b clients are running the same software, check to see that they are up-to-date drivers & client software. If you're using the MS client software (Zero Wireless Config) try a client using the vendor's client software instead.
If the clients are not eve associating, look at the basic parameters: things like preamble length (legacy default is "long" which is a one meg data rate)
If you can get the 802.11b client to connect whith all open parameters, then add WEP. Be advised that some clients need the WEP entered as HEX, not ASCII.
For example ASCII "ABCD" would be "41 42 43 44" in hex ... make sure you're using the same system. IF youre using something like "12345abcde" that can be a valid (but incorrect) hex string when ou really intend for it to be ASCII.
Also note that leading or training spaces (ASCII 20) are valid characters. Make sure you do not have leading or training spaces in your WEP (unless you really want them there, in whch case, make sure they're there)
Make sure the Ethernet format is correct: use the Web GUI to set up. Check the parameters on the "Interfaces" page and do not (at least initially) use the "Best throughput" or "Best Range" settings, leave it at "Default Settings"
If your 802.11b clients are PDAs, bar-code scanners, or other hand-held devices, check that they are at default settings for the standard 802.11b protocols; some use proprietary protocols for better performance or security.
That's about it for me ... let us know if any of that changes (works / doesn't work, but acting differently / doesn't work, looks the same).
Good Luck

Hi,
I have a Cisco Aironet AIR-AP1120B-A-K9 802.11b Wireless Access Point. Can I integrate this AP with AIR-WLC2106-K9.
Thankx and regards
SatishHi Satish,
Just to add a note to the good info from Jerome (+5 points for this Jerome :)
Sadly, the 1120 with "B" Radio is not supported :(
Support for the 1121 was added in WLC version 4.0.155.0 Have a look at these related docs;
Software release 4.0.155.0 New Features
LWAPP for Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Points (802.11g radio only) Allows the Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Point to be upgraded from autonomous access point mode to lightweight mode using the autonomous to lightweight mode upgrade tool.
Note You must install software release 4.0.155.0 on the controller before connecting 1100 series access points to the controller.

LWAPP Upgrade Tool Troubleshoot Tips
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a008072d9a1.shtml
Access points must run Cisco IOS Release 12.3(7)JA or later before you use the upgrade tool.
System Requirements
You can use the Autonomous to Lightweight Mode upgrade tool to install Cisco IOS Release 12.3(11)JX on these access points:
**All 1100 series access points containing MP21G (802.11g) radios
All 1130, 1230, and 1240 series access points
All modular 1200 series access points running Cisco IOS software and containing these supported radios:
802.11g: MP21G, MP31G
802.11a: AIR-RM21A-x-K9, AIR-RM22A-x-K9
All 1300 series access points in access point mode
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/ios/release/notes/b311jx1.html
Cisco has released a free tool called the "Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool" that allows selected Cisco Aironet autonomous access point models to be configured for lightweight mode operation.
The Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool supports the following models:
Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series access points
Cisco Aironet 1230AG Series access points
Cisco Aironet 1200 Series access points that contain 802.11g (AIR-MP21G-x-K9) and/or second-generation 802.11a radios (AIR-RM21A-x-K9 or AIR-RM22A-x-K9)
Cisco Aironet 1130AG Series access points
**Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Points that contain 802.11g radios (AIR-AP1121G-x-K9)
Cisco Aironet 1300 Series Access Points/Bridges (AIR-BR1310G-x-K9 or AIR-BR1310G-x-K9-R). A Cisco Aironet 1300 Series operating in Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP) mode only operates as an access point. This series does not support LWAPP bridging mode.
The Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool supports a process to migrate an autonomous access point from autonomous mode to lightweight mode. Unlike a VxWorks to Cisco IOS Software upgrade, this process is a Cisco IOS Software upgrade to the existing Cisco IOS Software image-not an operating system "swapout". In converted access points operating in lightweight mode, Cisco IOS Software continues to run on the access point, while LWAPP is used to communicate with a wireless LAN controller. Since LWAPP supports automatic access point configuration, there is no need to retain or convert the original autonomous Cisco IOS Software access point configuration.

Hello,
What is the recomended way to connect 5 APs 1242 to a wlc 2106?
Connect directly the 5 APs to the wlc and use one port for the management interface and connection to the switch or to connect the APs to a switch and use one connection for the wlc?
Thanks in advance.Depends on the AP.
One FastEthernet connection to the switch doens't "really" create a bottleneck. Your AP might. If you, say, you have 1130 or older then I'd say no significant bottleneck because the APs are also FastEthernet.
If you use the newer ones, like the 1250 and newer, which has GigEthernet and/or higher throughput (if you enable 802.11n) the yes. The switch AND the WLC 2100 are both the bottleneck.
