Wlc 2106 mDns bonjour AirPlay AirTunes apple??? help

Hi guys,
Long time reader, first time poster.. I'm after some advice.
I'm failing dismally trying to configure a 2106 Wlc to allow apple device (iPhone, iPads) to stream AirPlay to an apple tv 2.
Now, I have this working perfectly with a 5508 WLC.
I understand that the apple devices all need to be on the same subnet (they are), that multicast needs to be enabled, and I've tried a variety of multicast addresses as mentioned in many posts.. Also the wired infrastructure is not the problem (as connecting net gear access points into the same wired infrastructure works fine).
I've also read posts where some people say the 2100series doesn't support AirPlay/bonjour/mDns and others saying they have had it work.
But I can't find a definitive answer.
Can anyone confirm or deny which WLC support AirPlay, as if I need to switch I want to make sure they do.
The 5508 works fine.
Anybody able to shed some wisdom?
Thanks Wayne.

  • WLC 7.5 Bonjour/mDNS at multiple sites

    Hi all,
After reviewing the mDNS/Bonjour features of WLC software 7.5 (although most applies for 7.4 as well), I am left somewhat confused.  It seems that once services are discovered, there is no way to filter them to be advertised only to the site they were discovered at.
To simplify our environment, consider the following scenario:
    A single WISM2 controller
A single SSID using dynamic VLANs deployed across diverse locations, with Wi-Fi mDNS discoveryeg. Site A has VLANs 11, 12, 13, Site B has VLANs 21, 22, 23
Wired mDNS discovery at both siteseg. Site A has VLANs 101, 102, 103, Site B has VLANs 201, 202, 203
In the instance, let's say a printer, is discovered on wired VLAN 101, and I only want to advertise it to the Site A Wi-Fi VLANs, it seems that I can't.  All VLANs that are configured to advertise the printer mDNS service records receive it, which means Site B sees the printer at Site A.
Is there any way to achieve what I want here?  It seems a crazy limitation that I can't filter the VLANs to what advertisements they receive, considering the service provider database has the learnt VLAN information in it.

    Scott,
LSS doesn't support mDNS-AP, it only applies over the wireless: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/7.5/config_guide/b_cg75_chapter_01011.html – about halfway down under Configuring Multicast Domain Name System, it states that there is no location awareness for wired service provider devices (Apple TVs). It also states that mDNS-AP devices are considered wired – even though these devices were discovered by the APs, they don’t get filtered by LSS.
If the Service provider is in the same wireless SSID/VLAN, you wouldn't need Bonjour Gateway.  If it's in a different wireless SSID/VLAN, but on the same AP, you'd be hairpinning traffic and doubling up wireless airtime.  LSS doesn't make much sense to me, unless I'm missing something.
Our solution so far is to extend the wireless VLAN out to a single port on the wired network, but the AppleTV can only be plugged into that port.  It limits our user's mobility with the devices.
I've sent this on to our Cisco reps, and they are pushing it up the chain for a feature request.

  • WLC 5508 -7.4.100 mDNS Bonjour snooping

    Hello
Have 7.4 installed and configured for Bonjour Snooping. All is working, but working too well. We have a large campus that house 2 schools and each school is complaining that they can see the other schools AppleTV devices.
I have played around with a few different scenarios to see if I can localize the bonjour traffic.
I guess I am looking to create a logical split for bonjour devices amoung the schools.
Apple came to the school and informed us that the IPAD has a limit of 64 devices that can be seen via the bonjour. At some point we will have over 100 AppleTV added.
so we have 3 wlc 5508's with 7.4.100
we have 2 SSIDs that span the whole campus
using AP groups to segment the floors in buildings
So the schools are logically split with AP groups
Here is what I have tried
I created few mDNS profiles and assigned the services for Apple TV - let's call them school1 and school2
I assign the mDNS profiles to the interfaces dedicated each school
enable snooping on the WLAN with profile of none
The end result is that devices from both schools can be seen.
I tried to create new ssid for apple TVs and a new ssid for 1 schools teachers
I followed the vlan select example
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_tech_note09186a0080bb1d7c.shtml
end result is that devices from both schools can be seen
I have tried the mDNS without multicast enabled just like the video shows to no avail - I assume maybe my AP groups might be more complicated then the example of just 2 vlans

I have tried combinations of things, but I must be missing something
In the webinar, Cisco said it will use filtering to restrict which  clients can see which services (Apple TV's, etc). What will Cisco use to  filter Bonjour requests?
    according to this article
    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/network-wifi/3376119/cisco-answers-user-questions-about-upcoming-apple-bonjour-gateway/#ixzz2SIDqFH49
The filtering options are: · Per WLAN/SSID · Per VLAN or AP  Group · Per Interface Group (which is a group of VLANs pooled together).
A Bonjour service policy can be created and applied on any one of  the above criteria. In the future, we will support per-user Bonjour  service policies which will come as a RADIUS attribute from the AAA server.

  • Where do I download bonjour? Will it help me with my apple tv?

Is it correct that bonjour can help me manage my apple tvs? I am having problems with my itunes library recognizing 2 of my 5 apple tvs.
Where do I get bonjour if this will help?   thank you  I have a Mac

You don't get it.  It is installed when you install iTunes.
And iTunes does not recogize ATV's  It just provides the home sharing service.  The ATV's are what see iTunes, or not.

  • BT HomeHub 5 - mDNS / Bonjour incompatiblity / BUG...

I stringly believe that the BT HomeHub 5 has an incompatibility with Apple's Bonjour service, which is an implementation of mDNS - an industry standard.
When my computer is connected to my home hub using WiFi then bonjour works perfectly. Specifically: I can detect and use my Network attached printer.
When my computer is connected to my home hub using a Cable and WiFi is switched off (on the PC) then I cannot detect and use my Network attached printer.
Here is a wireshark dump of the mDNS packets when connected with WiFi - note the proper query and response:
Now here is the wireshark screen shot when connected with a wire - note the queries being sent, but NO responses.
I believe the home hub is somehow not passing the queries, or blocking the responses, when usng Wired instead of WiFi.

I too have exactly the same problem - it is extremely frustrating - as it is definitely a HH5 problem but BT do not seem to have recognised it as such (When I moved from HH4 to HH5 I started to have problems). On these forums there is lots of red-herring advice about  separating the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks (or switching one off) and things apparently working after. I believe that the essential problem is that the HH5 does not allow the proper broadcast of parts of the nDNS protocol between networks (i.e. between the wired, 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi networks) - so bonjour/airplay will work if the client and the server are on the same physical network, but not if they are on different networks -e.g. one on wired and another on wireless.
I have been playing with wireshark too, and it is is clear that if you switch on a bonjour enabled server then the initial announcement of the device does make it between the networks, but there is some later part of the protocol that is being blocked - It would be really great if there was a BT engineer responsible for HH5 what was reading this that could look into this problem - I have tried all the usual support routes, but to no avail.
It should be noted that mDNS is not just an apple protocol - on my home network a non-apple network printer was able to announce itself on DHCP to windows clients before HH5.

  • WLC-2106 and multiple interfaces on the same network

    Hi there,
I recently created a TAC request to the Cisco support regarding our WLC-2106, but they could not help me. Basically I just learned that you can create new interfaces for the wireless LAN controller and then dedicate them to a given wireless network (SSID). This way I could more effectively utilize network bandwidth also. Problem is that all of the interfaces have to be in a different network segment in order to work, which is not what I want. I specifically want to have several interfaces on the same network segment.
Has anyone tried to accomplish the same?

Basically what I've misunderstood is that all the traffic generated by our wireless clients have been going through the single 100Mbit/s ethernet port on the wireless LAN controller (management interface), and to mitigate this I thought I could create new interfaces (ports) and dedicate those to given WLAN networks.. I see now that this is not supported. Not inside the same network at least.
So, by reading further and consulting my best friend Google I learned about a setting called "AP Mode". Changing that from Local (the default) to H-REAP the APs should not route their traffic anymore through the management interface on the wireless controller, but instead route all the client traffic directly to the local LAN. This way you effectively remove the 100Mbit/s bottle-neck when all the APs were using the management interface both for configuration and client data traffic.
It seems you also have to enable H-REAP Local switching from a given WLAN network in addition to changing the AP Mode of your access points to H-REAP. I'm still in the testing phase here so should anyone have any insight to this, I'd be greatful to hear more.

  • Can't Airplay to Apple TV 2 after updating to iOS 7.1

I have updated my iPhone 5 and my iPad 2 to iOS 7.1, and AirPlay no longer works to my Apple TV 2. I can't mirror, I can't AirPlay from YouTube, and I can't display photos from my phone or iPad to my Apple TV 2. On both devices, the AirPlay icon shows up, and they both 'see' the Apple TV, but when I click 'Apple TV' under the AirPlay menu, it gets immediately deselected and reverts to the device I'm using. A few things: my router and network are fine; everything worked perfectly before updating (and the iOS 7.1 update is the only change since the problem cropped up); all my network / router settings are exactly as outlined on the Apple help page; I have restarted all the network components and all the devices; and I even tried the 'change language' and 'Turn off home sharing' tricks to no avail. This is driving me nuts! Does anyone have any other ideas? Does anyone else have this problem too? Has anyone had this problem and fixed it?? My wife's going to kill me if I don't fix this soon as everything worked fine before and my kids AirPlay kid videos every day... thanks in advance!

I just tested it from my wife's phone that's still running iOS 6. I can AirPlay videos just fine. This makes me positive it's not the network and that it's an iOS 7.1 issue. We had 3 devices on iOS 6 for over a year, and AirPlay worked. Then I updated my phone to iOS 7 and everything was still fine. Then I updated my phone to iOS 7.1 and I could no longer AirPlay, but the iPad and my wife's phone still worked. I updated the iPad a couple days ago to 7.1 and it stopped working, but my wife's phone still works. It's a perfect correlation between iOS 7.1 and AirPlay breaking on three devices... I'll try ethernet anyway. Thanks!

  • An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Apple TV". An unknown error occurred (-15000).

    Hi ,
I acquired an Apple TV (Gen3) a couple of days ago.
The Apple TV seems to be connected properly to WIFI (Good signal)
I watched streaming videos on Youtube and film trailers – the speed is ok.
I followed the protocol but, still, I cannot connect Itunes to the Apple tv.
    These are the error messages:
On the TV : apple tv could not connect to library
In Itunes: An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Apple TV”. An unknown error occurred (-15000).
Please note that Apple TV doesn’t appear in the list of devices in Itune’s preferences menu.
The Home Share is enabled on both devices and I connected with the Same Apple ID on each device.
    Airplay is on.
    Ref Apple TV :
    Apple tv: Model MD199HC/A
    Serial number DY******RHN
    apple tv software : 5.3(6105)
    Imac: OS X version 10.8.4
    I already tried to :
    Unplug/plug modem and router
    Test connectivity
    Disable the Firewall
Re-enable the firewall with Itunes in the list of ‘allowed’ devices
Re-set Apple TV (3 times) + Up to date
Re-start Apple TV and computer several time
    Itunes is up to date
    Could you please help?
    Many Thanks
    Sylvie

    Hi all,
    Thanks for your comments.
In my knowledge, there isn't any security software active on my computer.
After re-setting my routeur several times, I finally swapped it against an Airport Time Capsule.
It solved the problem, however, I would be interested to know if a (less expensive) solution exists.

  • Airplay/Airtunes menus not showing up on iphone 4 v4.3.3

I upgraded my windows iphone to v 4.3.3 so I could utilize airplay/airtunes.  It worked at first, albeit intermittently, the first day.  Now I can't see the menu anymore.
For what it's worth, airtunes works just fine streaming from my laptop through my Airport Express, and my girlfriend's iphone 4 (mac) works as well.  I've tried tapping on the music menu of my phone (to make sure it wasn't hidden), and restarted/reset my iphone with zero luck.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Rob

The AirPlay icon is sometimes missing on my iPhone too. I have iOS 4.3.3, but I've experienced it with previous software versions as well.
I think AirPlay still has issues working with multiple devices and AirPlay is unavailable on one device if the other device is still connected (even when not playing). It's up to Apple to fix this as there is not much a user can do. You just have to be connected to the same wi-fi network and optionally use your Apple ID for security.

  • Can't AirPlay to Apple TVs

Been having this problem often more and more recently: my apple devices will airplay to Apple TVs, but my apple TVs won't home share with my iTunes on my PC. All devices are on network, reset all, reinstalled iTunes, even changed IPv6 to "linked-local" which worked for a bit. Now I can't get anything. All TVs say must turn on home sharing when try connecting to "computer."
Any help is appreciated, as I'm ready to trash all apple products.

I have tried everything!  I have a MBP that works just fine.  It sees the apple tv and vice versa.  My windows 8 machine does not.  I have disabled the firewall and everything else.  The fact that my MBP sees the apple tv means my network configuration is correct.  Both machines on itunes 11.1.1.  Someone help me please!!!!!

  • ITunes Airtunes Apple TV dropout

    Hi
    I use:
    MacBook Pro running 10.8.1
    Apple TV 3rd gen
    Airport Express (n)
    5GHz Belkin Router
I can play music from iTunes to my airport express without any issues at all, no dropouts at all, fabulous. But if I do the same but select Apple TV from iTunes instead, the music drops out, say the lyric of the song is "HELLO" id only hear "H L O" etc on every song. If I use Apple TV itself and choose my iTunes library from there it plays music fine. Sending music, video via Airplay to Apple TV from my iPhone 4 and my girlfriends iPhone 4S works fine too.
Oddly if I send video (SD and HD) from iTunes to Apple TV via Airplay it plays without dropouts. Its only music files it drops out on!
Can someone shed any light on this odd problem? Ive turned off iPv6 in OS X, didnt fix the Airplay problem, just made iTunes connect to my Airport Express faster on first use.
    Thanks

    Anyone can help?

  • An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Apple TV".

LOADS OF PROBLEMS WITH AIPORT EXPRESS
An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Apple TV”.

I had the same issue, started getting the error after my Airport Express had been working perfectly for over two years.
On another post in this site, someone advised disabling IPv6.
    System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPv6 to OFF
This instantly fixed the streaming for me. Not sure why or if it will work for AppleTV.
    Hope this helps.
